Jussi Chydenius and Bob Chilcott : Sun, Moon, Sea, and Stars Drawing together two composers long associated with contemporary vocal music, Sun, Moon, Sea, and Stars presents eight original and exciting pieces by Bob Chilcott and Jussi Chydenius (of Rajaton fame). Setting celebrated American and English poetry, as well as specially-written texts by Chilcott, this collection examines themes of nature, the elements, eternity, and love. The timeless character of the words is explored through a wide range of popular musical styles, including rock grooves, reflective ballads, and exuberant encores. With a cappella and accompanied pieces, optional bass and drum kit parts, and a variety of SATB textures, Sun, Moon, Sea, and Stars provides an array of compelling concert material for today's audiences. Without doubt Acoustix are one of the best barbershop quartets there ever has been and include some of the genre's most talented singers. This is a best of CD that also includes four all new studio recordings namely "Moon River", "You Are So Beautiful", "O Canada" and "The Impossible Dream." One expects to be blown away by these singers and sure enough these new songs deliver the goods. Added bonus is that Aucoustix's previous bass (who now sings with Max Q) Jeff Oxley joins Joel T Rutherford who together take you to bass heaven. If you only own one barbershop CD (and how sad would that be) this would be the one to have! Superb. Songlist: Tonight, That's An Irish Lullaby, I'm Afraid the Masquerade is Over, Irish Blessing, The Stars & Stripes Forever, Blackbird Medley, The Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America, This Is The Moment, Day By Day, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Unforgettable, Simon & Garfunkel Montage, Cool Yule, You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch, The First Noel, O Worship the King, You'll Never Walk Alone, Fear Not My Child, Moon River, You Are So Beautiful, O Canada, The Impossible Dream Alti & Bassi : Medley Alti & Bassi are five debonair-looking, fun-and-Western-music-loving Italian men whose "Medley" is exactly that, a 32-song medley. Or more correctly, a medley comprised of seven medleys, beginning with 8 heavily-accented Disney chestnuts ("Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf," "Heigh Ho," Bibbidi Bobbity Bu" and others); a masterful 4-song Platters medley ("My Prayer," "Sixteen Tons," "Only You" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"); a jazzy "West Side Story" medley ("Maria," "Tonight" and an apropos "America"); an "I Love America" Broadway medley ("Singin' In The Rain," "Cheek To Cheek," "Night and Day" and "New York, New York"); a seven song Beatles medley "A&B Road" ("Abbey Road," get it? It includes "Sgt. Pepper's," "If I Fell," "Norwegian Wood," "Help," "All You Need Is Love" and other favorites); a "Canto Libero" medley of Italian favorites ("Fiori Rosa Fiori Di Pesco," "Il Mio Canto Libero" and "Con Il Nastro Rosa") and finally the "A&B G's" medley (The Bee Gees of course, "(Saturday) Night Fever," "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Stayin' Alive"). These guys have loved and listened to a lot of records, cassette tapes and CDs to sound as much like these groups as they do. We love all this music, too, and Andrea, Alberto, Paolo, Diego and Filippo have the a cappella chops to do it justice. Listen to the yummy bass lead on "Sixteen Tons" (which we seem to remember as a Tennessee Ernie Ford hit, rather than the Platters, but no matter), and to the falsetto lead on "Saturday Night Fever"-these guys may come across as somewhat silly at times (we prefer "fun-loving") but they can really sing, and they give us a sweet taste of 32 wonderful songs here. Which we think you will enjoy, as we did! Songlist: Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, Heigh Ho, A Spoonful of Sugar, The Bare Necessities, One Song, Bibbidi Bobbidi Bu, Everybody Wants To Be a Cat, My Prayer, Sixteen Tons, Only You (And You Alone), Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Maria, Tonight, America, Singin' In The Rain, Cheek to Cheek, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Long and Winding Road, If I Fell, Norwegian Wood, All You Need is Love, Help, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Fiori Rosa Fiori Di Pesco, Il Mio Canto Libero, Night Fever, How Deep is Your Love, Stayin' Alive Ambassadors of Harmony : Applause This is the AOH's third spirited recording, and the fun, excitement and feelings of love and nostalgia that come though it are part of the group's tradition. Included is the "Toy Set" that wowed the audience at the 2001 international competition in Nashville. The centerfold of the liner notes is a full-color shot of the 115-strong group on stage in complete "Toyland" costumes, from clowns and roman soldiers to pandas, cats, sailors, space cadets, Spiderman - you name it. It all says "fun," loud and clear, and that's how the group sings. 12 songs are here: "Applause," "I'm Beginning to See the Light," "Through the Years," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," the Turtles' "Happy Together," "The Music of the Night," "Toy Song," "Toyland," "Short People," "One Alone," "Tonight" and "Friends." That must have been an unforgettable performance at SPEBSQSA Nashville, and this is an unforgettable CD on many levels - most of all the pure, sweet barbershop harmony that flows throughout. Songlist: Applause, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Through The Years, My Honey's Lovin' Arms, Happy Together, The Music Of The Night, Toy Song, Short People, One Alone, Tonight, Friends The Drifters : Save The Last Dance For Me / The Good life Two classic Atlantic albums from '61 and '65, featuring some of the Drifters' biggest hits-including 'Save the Last Dance for Me; Some Kind of Wonderful; I Count the Tears; Sweets for My Sweet; Please Stay; Saturday Night at the Movies; Mexican Divorce; Tonight; Temptation', and more. 24 tracks, over an hour of music! Most of those have been reissued, but their album tracks have been neglected, and Sepia Records decided to feature 26 selections (all accompanied) from films and stage shows that the Aces recorded. Beginning in 1946 when Al Alberts got together with sax player Dave Mahoney. They got together back home in Pennsylvania with drummer Lou Silvestri and trumpeter Rosario "Sod" Vacarro, and evolved into a vocal quartet with Al at lead. Offered a song by local songwriters called "It's No Sin," the foursome recorded and distributed it themselves, which caught the attention of Decca, who signed the Aces, who were on their way! These are all well-known and loved songs: "Standing on the Corner," "Too Close for Comfort," "Get Me to the Church on Time," "Till There Was You," "Tonight," "Small World," "I Love Paris," "Bali Ha'i," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," "Arrivederci Roma," "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," "Whatever Will Be, Will Be," "Tammy, "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" and "Three Coins in the Fountain," all of which feature the bright, upbeat, beautifully harmonic sound of the Four Aces. Sit back and enjoy this sweet blast from the past! This is another of those "2 lps on one CD" that we love so much, and that is such a good value. The fresh, upbeat, jazzy, best-selling sound of the Four Lads (all big-band accompanied) is heaped on our plates like strawberries and whipped cream. 20 hits, the first 8 a live stage show, performed before fans who raved over songs like "Bye and Bye," "God Bless Us All," "My Blue Heaven," "The Wabash Cannonball" and "What Can I Lose;" the next 12 a smorgasbord of romantic winners with miles of violins: "Fly Me to the Moon," "Like Someone In Love," "While We're Young," Leonard Bernstein's "Tonight," Sammy Cahn's "Time After Time" and "I'll Never Stop Loving You," "An Affair To Remember" and "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing." Fresh, jazzy pop, heart-tugging slow-dance music-it's all here, and all wonderful, by four lads whose influential sound defined the 1950s and early 60s. There are 23 songs on Disc 1, which are the remastered lps "Tonight" and "I Had A Dream Dear," and 15 on Disc II, which is the remastered lp, "Grandma's Boys III. These young guys sing prize-winning harmonies with joy and spirit, and they went from an unknown group in college to the pinnacle of Barbershop fame. They're obviously having big fun singing to us, and what we especially love about Barbershop is the fact that it's fun music! Plenty of great Sweet Adeline singing here with particular favorites being the Jay Giallombardo arrangement of Sondheim's "Tonight", the David Wright arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's' "Something's Coming (from West Side Story) and the entertaining opening medley of "Ain't Misbehavin'/Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do." At last, a collection of mostly new tunes from prolific Contemporary a cappella pioneer, and one of our long-time favorites, Rockapella, swathed in sizzling cool James Bondish graphics by group member Jeff Thacher, who also produced "Bang." New member Steven Dorian joins the all male quintet, taking the place of Kevin Wright. 14 cuts: the fast paced title tune has a funny nod to "Shaft" and sets the table for this very hot album, "Hard Time" has a Dylanesque "get lost" attitude and a driving beat, "Nothin' But" is a classic r&b-type tune that features George Baldi making us believe with his killer bass, joined by John K. Brown's smooth tenor, "Tonight" finally includes on a recording this overtly risque song that the group has used to open their live shows, "Shemibos" is a driving, rhythmic dance gem with John doing a smoking lead, "Malibu Grand-Prix" is a fast-moving ode to the Beach Boys, with the patented Rockapella sense of humor and vocal faux motors revving, "Too Much" is another "get up and dance" winner with a husky lead by John, "Babygirl" again features George's sweet chocolaty bass and is so very fine, "The Shortest Path" is a yummy ballad with another great lead by John, "No Pressure" is an awesome audio-manipulated dance tune anchored by George's creamy bass, and bonus track "A-Punk" originally was released by Vampire Weekend and is simply delicious! Three songs that were first recorded on the album "1man1mike," "4u4now4life," "Tell Me What You Want" and "California Sad Eyed Girl"--all are better versions on "Bang," and all are excellent. Bottom line? "Bang" is one of the best of the year by one of a cappella's elite groups who just keep getting more amazing-don't miss this one! Songlist: Bang, Hard Time, 4U4Now4Life, Tell Me What You Want, Nuthin' But, California Sad-Eyed Girl, Tonight, Shemibos, Malibu Grand-Prix, Too Much, Babygirl, The Shortest Path, No Pressure, A-Punk Sweet Adelines : Top Choruses 2007 The 61st Annual Sweet Adelines International 2007 Convention and Competition took place in Calgary, Saskatchewan, and this wonderful live CD gives us a generous helping of the colorful chorus competition. The Vocal Majority holds an unprecedented eleven Gold Medals in International competitions of the Barbershop Harmony Society, making it the most successful musical organization of its kind in the world, and truly deserving of the title, "America's Premier Pops Chorus." The Chorus's repertoire encompasses music from the classics, jazz, patriotic, sacred, standards, barbershop and Broadway pops. "Something's Coming" is a long-awaited, all new recording from the VMC (which also features 2007 BHS Gold-winning Quartet MAX Q) of 11 Broadway pops hits. Our favorites include the title tune (from "West Side Story"), "What Kind of Fool Am I?" from "Stop the World--I Want to Get Off," "Luck Be A Lady" from "Guys and Dolls," "Aquarius" from "Hair," "Memory" from "Cats," "Somewhere," also from "West Side Story," "Ol' Man River" from "Showboat," and "Circle of Life" from "The Lion King." This veteran touring chorus nails every cut, at once powerful and subtle, with four-part harmonies that we can only describe as "magnificent." Treat yourself to some of the world's best entertainment, from the Vocal Majority!
