The Barbershop Harmony Society's International Chorus competition, held in Denver, CO in July of 2007 saw California's Westminster Chorus emerge with the gold, singing gems like "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" and "Strike Up the Band/Everybody Step" medley, followed by Ambassadors of Harmony, here singing "They Didn't Believe Me," local favorites Sound of the Rockies, singing "Colorado, My Home," and the Northern Lights, singing "'Cross the Mason Dixon Line." But listening to top-20 finishers like Voices in Harmony sing "The Sunshine of Your Smile," The Alliance's "When It's Nighttime in Dixieland," Atlanta Vocal Project's "Shakin' The Blues Away," Vocal FX's "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," Cambridge Chord Company's "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," and the Alexandria Harmonizers' "Happy Feet Medley," makes it clear to us what a tough decision the judges had to make!

Bling! began their Sweet Adelines adventure in 2009 as four friends, Dayve, Angie, Deanna and Kim, that love to ring those barbershop chords. They've earned many Regional and International titles including 2011 International 8th place and novice quartet winners, 2012 7th place quartet and finally 2012 2nd place quartet in the world! "Bling! It On!," their glittering debut CD of 12 tunes, has many favorites of ours, but we'll mention the title tune, "I've Got The World on a String," "Some Lucky Day," "Witchcraft," "Gonna Build A Mountain," "Feeling Good," and bonus live tracks from Denver 2012 "If I Give My Heart To You" and "Shanghai." Blue Jupiter : Live In New York   

Edgy pop-funk Blue Jupiter, who won Audience Favorite and Best Arrangement at the Washington DC and NYC Harmony Sweeps Regionals 2 years in a row and recently won Oreo's "Milk's Favorite Jingle" contest, which now is all over the radio, brings us their 3rd CD-the first two the critically acclaimed "Ear Candy" and "Scattered Flurries." "Live" has "no tricks, no tracks, just four mouths and four mics," all 12 cuts arranged, performed and recorded by these 4 talented guys in November 2005 in New York City. Smoky Robinson's "Get Ready," Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time," the Turtles' reborn bubblegum hit "Happy Together," a bluesy, funky cover of "Flip, Flop & Fly," the wonderful "Mr. Pinstripe Suit," Carlos Santana's classic "Smooth" and "Wrapped Up In You" from Ear Candy, the vocal percussion drum solo on "Steal My Kisses" and the driving final cut "All The Small Things" are favorites. Inexplicably, there's guitar accompaniment on "Drive," but the crowd is going nuts throughout, and so are we whenever we see or hear this energetic, dynamic quartet-"Live" is a stone winner!

This is not to discount the quartet's vocal abilities, whether playing it straight ("Roses of Picardy," "There Used To Be A Ballpark," "Turn Around"), or light-hearted ("Mobile," "18 Wheels On A Big Rig"). Flirtations, The : Three   

This is the third and, it turns out, final recording of the Flirtations. Through twists and turns, some tragic, some joyful the remaining two Flirts are Jon Arterton and Jimmy Rutland who are joined by the first female Flirt, Suede who adds a jazz edge to the repertoire. Rather than the rollicking "out there" presentations of the first two albums this one is beautiful, sensitive and introspective. The humor is thoughtful, rather than burlesque. The three voices complement one another marvelously well as they create a sung testimonial to the human spirit.

The Pickets have an excellent ear for pop classics and translate them impeccably in the a cappella style, imparting their own unique spin. While some the arrangements remain on the whole true to the original versions, when the Pickets innovate, as they do on Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," the results are even more impressive. "Southern Man" is transformed into a Jamaican reggae number; the only recognizable part is the refrain. The group has a particular knack for writing interesting countermelodies, that diverge and then resolve in unexpected ways. Their vocal approach is relaxed, never strained; the production, smooth and refined. Few groups handle contemporary material as well.

Northbrook, IL's veteran Melodeers Chorus has been the picture of Sweet Adelines consistency, having captured International Chorus Gold in 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004 and, in the fall of 1998 in Honolulu, 2008! Musical Director Jim Arns has contributed his superb arranging, teaching and direction skills to each of these wins, and the Chorus could not be more proud to call him their own. "Circle of Fifths" is a generous helping of Melodeers, 18 sumptuous cuts, including three live recordings, "Time After Time" and "Love Letters Straight From Your Heart," recorded live on the Internationals stage in Honolulu, and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," recorded live at Las Vegas Arena. Rare in the barbershop world in that it's made up completely of family members (Dad Jack Slamka sings bass with his sons Mike, sing lead, and Mark, baritone, and his nephew tenor Don), Michigan-based Power Play took the 2003 Quartet Gold in Montreal, Canada! Here are 13 of the group's best: "Side by Side," "The Sunshine of Your Smile," "Moonlight Becomes You," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," "Time After Time," "A Sunday Kind of Love," "Play That Barbershop Chord," "My Foolish Heart," "'Till Tomorrow," "Taking A Chance on Love," "Let Me Be Your Wings," the title tune, "When There's Love at Home" and the traditional spiritual, "Rise, Shine, For the Light is A-Comin'." Formed in 1988, the group has appeared in international competition 12 times, medalling the last three years before winning it all in Montreal (5th in 2000, 5th in 2001 and 3rd in 2002). The foursome is built around family, and it was the title tune and "I Learned It from My Dear Old Dad" that won it for them at the Finals. The powerful, ringing chords are some of the best we've heard. We can only recommend this CD and offer congrats to Michigan's Power Play!

"Femkant," Norwegian mixed-voice septet (four women, three men) Pust's debut album, was released in September, 2007, and it immediately attracted a lot of positive attention. The Norwegian press hailed it as a "vocal sensation," and called it "vocal charm and voiceplay from another world." The album was nominated for a 2007 Norwegian Grammy Award, and it was also nominated for a CARA Award for best 2007 a cappella jazz album. These 14 a cappella songs include some excellent covers, a delicate "Time After Time," a whimsical "I Won't Grow Up" from Disney's "Peter Pan," a soaring "Innocent," a playful, jazzy "Dat Dere," a poignant, bluesy "Moon Over Bourbon Street" and a powerful, bluenote "Take a Look in the Mirror." All other songs are in Norwegian, such as the heartbreaking "Vaggviselat," haunting "Turlutte 33," playful "Femkantgeneralen" and teasing, scattish "Helene Harefroken." All arrangements are written by or for the group. A very impressive debut, "Femkant" is a breath of fresh jazzy air from Norway!

Once again, another fine year for the Sweet Adelines International Chorus competition, not to mention the fact that it was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year we have North Metro Chorus in 3rd place, the Melodeers in 2nd, and champions this year were the Rich Tone Chorus, of Richardson, Texas. Some of today's, and yesterday's, finest songs were transformed into tight barbershop arrangements and sung with gusto by these choruses, who were all very deserving of their spot in the top 10.

The competition was tough at the 2010 competition held in Seattle and the ladies were in full voice. The judge's finally decided on the Scottsdale Chorus as winners of the coveted gold medal with the Harborlites taking Silver and North Metro won silver. This is another wonderful collection for all fans of Sweet Adeline singing.

It was still in 1965 that the second Relic Record was produced. The first was selling well in a streetcorner underground around New York City and Philadelphia. Eddie Gries and his partners decided to start producing their own acappella sessions. They began with the popular group, the Chessmen. The Holidays were a young group which auditioned right in the Times Square Record Shop. The Citadels were the first mixed group to record acappella, streetcorner style. The Youngtones were a young Latino group who almost made it big. This second record was rounded out with leased masters by the Delstars of 'Zoop Bop' fame (remember them?) and the Five Jades. None of these songs had been released before Best of Acappella Vol 2. The CD is packaged with the same images which a adorned the original album jacket and includes the original album notes.

Vox One : Say You Love Me   

This Japanese release features seven songs not before released in the U.S.. For fans of Vox One, we are already preaching to the choir, but for the uninitiated, this contemporary jazz quintet has all of the technique of the Real Group, with a compelling edge of intensity and emotion. Therefore, a traditional such as "Shenandoah," using brilliant dynamics, phrasing and an admirable combination of tension and release, is transcendent, whereas classic pop - Carol King's "It's Too Late" - is given a heartbreaking harmonic complexity and richness. The arpeggiated chord accompaniment in the verse, so simple, yet effective, shows why a talented arranger can elevate the ordinary to greatness. When Vox One swings into the standard, "Autumn Leaves," they prove that they do no less than weave straw into gold.

The 14 Whiffenpoofs of 2004, all Senior men, present a strong collection of 20 tunes, including two live cuts: "Aj, Lucka, Lucka, Siroka," and their trademark "Whiffenpoofs Song." We really see and appreciate the group's harmonic power on the jazzy Count Basie tune "Little Pony," "Something Like The Blues," Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain," "On Broadway," "14th Street," "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most," "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Mad World," "Down By the Salley Gardens," Duke Ellington's "Cottontail," Yalie Cole Porter's "Too Darn Hot," and the WWII anthem "I'll Be Seeing You." "Subtly" proves that the oldest collegiate a cappella ensemble in the U.S. is also one of the best!

Whiffenpoofs : Songs of Yale   

Every year since their founding as a Senior Glee Club quintet that met for weekly concerts at Mory's Temple Bar at Yale University, 14 Senior men are selected to be the Whiffenpoofs, oldest collegiate a cappella group in the U.S. "Songs of Yale" is collection of 20 traditional Yale songs like "Wake, Freshmen, Wake," "Aj Lucka, Lucka, Siroka," "We Meet Again Tonight," "Eli Yale," "Full Cup," the haunting "Whiffenpoof Song," (which refers to Mory's), "Time After Time" and "Yale Football Medley." Others are written by written and/or arranged by former Whiffenpoofs, like "When I See All the Lovin' (That They Waste on Babies)," the spiritual "Ride The Chariot," "Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes," the very funny "Daddy is a Yale Man," "A Song for Old Yale," "'Neath The Elms," "Aura Lee," "My Cutie's Due," and "Bright College Years." Great, authentic stuff from these legends of collegiate a cappella!

As one of the nation's oldest and most acclaimed collegiate a cappella groups the Whiffenpoofs have, during their 99 years of existence, sung all over the world. With their 100 year anniversary approaching the group decided that was not quite enough so now "The Whiffs" have taken off to explore the universe where "in space nobody can hear you sing". This recording reflects their long tradition by performing a selection of more traditional male glee club type songs along with a very healthy mix of contemporary a cappella songs. With such a long and proud tradition the Whiffenpoofs have always been one of the creams of the crop and this year's group more than hold their own on this fine recording. An added bonus is the printed insert which turns into a cool poster.

Whiffenpoofs : We Meet Again Tonight   

The Whiffenpoofs, founded at Yale in 1909, are fast approaching their 100th anniversary, and the14 young men who comprise the 2008 version of the group is celebrating by releasing this sumptuous "best of" collection of 21 tunes. The oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group in the US begins with a pair of Whiff standards, the Bohemian marching song "Aj, Lucka, Lucka, Siroka" and the title tune, which refers to a regular Monday night meeting of the group at Mory's Temple Bar, where the guys are the resident muses, going from table to table as the patrons join in the revelry. Other favorites are "Little Pony," "Midnight Train to Georgia," the traditional English tune "Down By the Salley Gardens," the foot-tapping "I've Been Everywhere." "Time after Time," "Steppin' Out With My Baby," "Bye Bye Blackbird," "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," "My Cutie's Due," the heart-tugging "I'll Be Seeing You" and the classic "Whiffenpoof Song." This is all great, legendary stuff, perfectly harmonized by one of the great Collegiate groups of all time. Enjoy!

The Masters of Harmony won gold for the eighth time in Kansas City this year. Silver went to Great Northern Union and bronze to The Northern Lights.
