"Fare Thee Well" (sometimes known as "The Turtle Dove") is an 18th-century English folk ballad, in which a lover bids farewell before setting off on a journey. The lyrics include a dialogue between the lovers. In 1919, the composer and folk-song scholar Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote an arrangement of the song, entitled "The Turtle Dove", for solo baritone (later re-arranged for solo and SATB choir). The song has been recorded, notably by Nic Jones as "Ten Thousand Miles", as well as by Joan Baez on her 1960 debut album, Mary Black, Eliza Carthy, Chad & Jeremy, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Liam Clancy, Marianne Faithfull and Kate Rusby and as "Ten Thousand Miles" by Michael Holliday, Burl Ives, Molina and Roberts, June Tabor and Marcus Mumford.

John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers sing English madrigals and folk songs. As entertainment for public occasions and a relief from boredom, the English madrigal comes in a wide variety of styles from dramatic to silly. This recording includes lighter pieces such as "Now is the Month of Maying" and "My Bonnie Lass She Smileth" by Thomas Morley, the somber "Silver Swan" by Orlando Gibbons and the comical "Fair Phyllis" by John Farmer. In addition, the program includes folk song arrangements by Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams. A classic recording. Songlist: Come Away, Sweet Love, Weep, O Mine Eyes, Fair Phyllis I Saw, Now Is The Month Of Maying, Fairwell, Dear Love, April Is In My Mistress' Face, Draw On, Sweet Night, Sing We At Pleasure, My Bonny Lass She Smileth, The Silver Swan, Mother, I Will Have A Husband, Dainty Fine Bird, As Vesta Was from Latmos Hill Descending, I Love My Love, My Sweetheart's Like Venus, Bushes and Briars, The Turtle Dove, The Three Ravens, Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron, O Waly, Waly, Greensleeves Cantus : Introit The young men of Cantus, an eleven-member ensemble from St. Olaf College, perform choral literature ranging from polyphony and chant to art songs and spirituals. Therefore the Latin "O Sacrum Convivium" (De Victoria) and Tallis' "If Ye Love Me" reside along a 20th century Gustafsson-composed "Kyrie" and "Gloria," the dissonant intervals heralding the epoch of modernism. "Nachtliches Standchen," a romantic lied, a form of which Schubert was master, is included, as is Finzi's "Thou Didst Delight My Eyes." "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" are quietly lambent; the acoustics of the church in Minnesota, where this CD was recorded, a perfect setting. Songlist: Introit for Trinity Sunday: Benedicta sit, O Sacrum Convivium, If Ye Love Me, Thee We Adore, Missa a cappella, Kyrie, Agnus Dei, Our Father, Ave Maria, Nachtlliches Standchen, Thou Didst Delight My Eyes, The Turtle Dove, Danny Boy, Shenandoah, Prayer of the Children, Adoramus te Collegium Regale : Carry Me Home Carry me home is an assortment of folk songs arranged for male voices including "Londonderry Air" and "O Waly Waly". Collegium Regale, which is composed of the choral scholars from the King's College Choir, explores the traditional songs of Britain, America, France and Hungary. Many of these familiar tunes, such as "Molly Malone" and "Shenandoah" were arranged by Keith Roberts who serves as the group's artistic consultant. The spirituals arranged by Robert Rice stray from the traditional style. His versions lean toward the lighter sounds of doo-wop and barbershop, particularly in "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child." Though, all pieces and especially the solos are sung beautifully. Songlist: Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron, Brigg Fair, Botany Bay, Il est ne le divin enfant, Myfanwy, The turtle dove, Londonderry air, Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, Nobody knows the trouble I seen, De gospel train, My sweetheart's like Venus, Ca' the yowes, Molly Malone, O Waly Waly, Ye banks and braes, Song of the Volga Boatmen, Shenandoah, Joshua, Steal Away, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Finzi Singers : Holst / Vaughan Williams Choral As directed by Paul Spicer, this English mixed ensemble has devoted themselves to the promulgation of British choral works. The relatively obscure Gustav Holst composed during the turn of the century, whereas Vaughan Williams began his career slightly later, by collecting English folk songs, ultimately accumulating over eight hundred! Later, Williams wrote various pieces for royal occasions and the like, such as "The Souls Of The Righteous" to dedicate the Battle Of Britain chapel. Sometimes dark and mournful ("Valiant For Truth"), hearty and powerful ("Sing Me The Men"), eerie and captivating ("Full Fathom Five") or gentle and pure ("O Lady, Leave That Silken Thread"), this collection is always uncompromised in excellence. Songlist: The Dark-Eyed Sailor, The Springtime Of The Year, Just As The Tide Was Flowing, The Lover's Ghost, Wassail Song, Ave Maria, Op. 9b, Valiant For Truth, O Vos Omnes, The Evening-Watch, Op.43, No 1, O Taste And See, The Souls Of Righteous, This Have I Done For My True Love, Op. 34, No. 2, Nunc Dimittis, Sing Me The Men, Op. 43, No. 2, Full Fathom Five, The Cloud-Capp'd Towers, Over Hill, Over Dale, O Lady, Leave That Silken Thread, Soft And Gently, The Autumn Is Old, Winter And The Birds, The Turtle Dove Gents : The Gents in Love Dijkstra: it gives me great pleasure to present this CD, which appears in response to repeated requests. At last we have taken the opportunity to record this repertoire. How often we have had to disappoint members of the audience when we tell them that, unfortunately, there are no recordings available for the arrangements of Billy Joels Lullabye or Toni Wines Groovy Kind of Love. Here they are at last! Also included are three beautiful songs from the popular Dutch group BLF. The goal of this CD is to evoke the simple joy of singing. In my opinion, it is this quality which, in addition to or even in spite of our attempts at perfection and flexibility, is the most important to convey to an audience, and it is a quality which The Gents always try to express. Songlist: Michelle, Lullabye, Blackbird, And So It Goes, With A Little Help From My Friends, Misschien niet d e Eeuwigheid, Omarm, Dansen aan zee, Londonderry Air, The Oak and the Ash, Molly Malone, Ca' the Yowes, The Turtle Dove, Hey Jude, If I Fell, A Groovy Kind of Love, And I Love Her King's Singers : Simple Gifts "Simple Gifts" is a very rare and special gift to us, as it represents the first full a cappella studio album by the legendary King's Singers in 10 years. Arguably the most popular a cappella group of all time, whose flawless harmonies grace over 30 finely-crafted CDs and a slew of songbooks in the Primarily A Cappella online catalog, we will assume that you know how good these six British men really are. So let's talk about some of the 16 carefully-selected songs: Billy Joel's classic "She's Always A Woman," James Taylor's sublime "You Can Close Your Eyes," the traditional joyous round "The Gift to Be Simple," Stephen Stills' harmonic CSN&Y gem "Helplessly Hoping," some wonderfully-arranged spirituals, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Deep River," "The Water is Wide" and "Steal Away," all of which feature some sweet deep bass leads. Randy Newman's poignant "When She Loved Me," Sting's "Valparaiso," Paul Simon's "April Come She Will Come" these are some of our picks for the most beautiful songs of all time. They are arranged by group member Phillip Lawson, Bob Chilcott and Peter Knight, and then sung as beautifully as you can imagine by the King's Singers. The King's Singers incredible blend and tuning goes to ensure that this is probably their finest recording in a long time. Enough said! Songlist: She's Always A Woman, You Can Close Your Eyes, Greensleeves, The Gift to be Simple, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Helplessly Hoping, Deep River, Black is the Color, I Love My Love, The Water is Wide, When She Loved Me, Valparaiso, The Turtle Dove, April Come She Will, Steal Away, You are the New Day King's Singers : Live at the BBC Proms The King's Singers celebrated their 40-year anniversary in 2008 with a live BBC Proms performance from the Royal Albert Hall. White. Some very hard to pick favorites among these 19 feel-good, lightly accompanied songs are: George and Ira Gershwin's "Clap Yo' Hands," the early American melody "Amazing Grace," Dave Mallet's lovely round "The Garden Song," Stephen Foster's "The Merry Heart," the German folk song "Marienwurmchen" (Ladybug), Vijay Singh's lively "Song for a Pirate Child," the Traditional Torres Straight Island song "Sesere Eeye" and David L. Brunner's beautiful "Jubilate Deo." The SVCC's bright, clear, spirited sound is as fine as any children's choir in the world, and every song is delightful! Accompanied on piano by assistant director Judy Kerlin Mason, "Homeland" is presented as "a collection of music featuring works of contemporary composers of the Americas." Some of our favorites are David Brunner's "Jubilate Deo" and "The World is Full of Poetry" from Earthsongs, Francisco Nunez' "Gloria" and "Credo" from Misa Pequena, Ron Nelson's "Ask the Moon," and the familiar "Shenandoah," "The Turtle Dove," "Georgia on My Mind," "Amazing Grace" and "May the Road Rise to Meet You," but every track is wonderful. All songs are accompanied by piano, organ and/or a variety of woodwinds, horns and percussion. Let the soaring voices of SHCC lift your spirits and calm your soul. Songlist: Jubilate Deo, The World is Full of Poetry from Earthsongs, Gloria from Misa Pequena, Credo from Misa Pequena, Day Break, Salve Regina, Ask the Moon from Three Settings of the Moon, Shenandoah, Homeland, The Star, Think On These Things, Song for the Mira, The Turtle Dove, Three Ways To Vacuum Your House -II, Over the Rainbow, Life Has Loveliness to Sell, Inscription of Hope, Georgia On My Mind, Amazing Grace from Over the Hills, May the Road Rise to Meet You St Charles Singers : I Know Where I'm Going Rarely heard works by English composer/conductor John Rutter are highlighted on this highly acclaimed disc by the St. Charles Singers. Fancies is a cycle of choral settings with small orchestra which uses texts from the 15th and 16th centuries including Shakespeare and Thomas Campion. This performance is only the second recording of this charming piece. Other Rutter pieces include, "The Keel Row," "Black Sheep," "Down By the Sally Garden" and "I Know Where I'm Goin'." All of the Rutter arrangements are accompanied by soloists from the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra. The remainder of the recording is an assortment of American and British folk song arrangements. "Flower of Beauty," is especially beautiful. This recording includes some great singing from a fine American choir. Songlist: Tell Me Where is Fancy Breed, There Is a Garden in Her Face, The Urchins' Dance, Riddle Song, Midnight's Bell, The Bellman's Song, Flower of Beauty, The Keel Row, The Turtle Dove, Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lamorna, Black Sheep, Down By The Sally Gardens, He's Gone Away, Swansea Town, The Oak and The Ash, Early One Morning, I Know Where I'm Going, Londonderry Air, Shenandoah Tenebrae : Songs of Farewell Following a string of five-star reviews for their previous discs of 20th-century French choral music the professional chamber-choir Tenebrae go from strength to strength with this new recording of British partsongs and choral music - centered on Hubert Parry's Songs of Farewell. Composed towards the end of Parry's life, the Songs of Farewell have taken on something of an epithetical interpretation; they are almost a musical summation of his compositional life, reflecting Parry's love of English renaissance madrigals and partsongs as much as the influence on his work from German composers like Brahms - made more complicated as these works were composed as the country (and its music) fell out of favour at the start of the Great War. This disc also includes works by Tavener, Sullivan and Vaughn Williams. Songlist: The Evening-Watch Op.43 No.1, A Good-Night, Take him, earth, for cherishing, Funeral Ikos, Songs of Farewell, My soul, there is a country, I know my soul hath power to know all things, Never weather-beaten sail, There is an old belief, At the round earth's imagined corners, Lord, let me know mine end, They are at rest, The Turtle Dove, The long day closes, Rest, Bring us, O Lord God King's Singers : Live at the BBC Proms The King's Singers celebrated their 40-year anniversary in 2008 with a live BBC Proms performance from the Royal Albert Hall.
