Percy M. Young (editor) : The English Glee In the period between the deaths of Handel and Mendelssohn, the glee was the vehicle by which secular part-singing was carried in England. The form is descended from the madrigal, with texts chosen partly in reaction against the vulgarity of the catch. This new history of the glee begins with an introductory essay detailing the form's historical, musical, and social context. Young has selected twenty-six settings, mainly in four parts but with examples in three and five parts, to show the breadth of the glee in its heyday. A unique feature of the form, and of this collection, is the high literary quality of the text and the high musical quality of the settings. This fine new volume is an essential addition to the choral repertory, and is uniform with the other indispensable Oxford classic choral collections: English Romantic Partsongs, The Oxford Book of English Madrigals, The Oxford Book of French Chansons, The Oxford Book of Italian Madrigals, and The Catch Book. If someone takes a look at the standard works in music literature, there is hardly any American choral music to be found. The American works that can be perceived as approaching the traditions of western music do not appear to interest the specialist world in Europe. The story in concert halls and churches, as well as in recording studios, is quite different, however. Through the founding of many choirs, gospels and spirituals are more popular than ever and, on the programs of classical a cappella choirs, the works of Morten Lauridsen or Samuel Barber have already become classics. The Amadeus Choir is an ensemble of some 50 singers and was founded by Karl-Friedrich Beringer, conductor of the Windsbacher Knabenchor since 1978. Songlist: Agnus Dei, Four Motets, Lux Aurumque, Cloudburst, Water Night, My Song In The Night, Nocturnes, The Rose, Lord God, Thy Sea Is Mighty, Crossing The Bar, The Battle Of Jericho, I'm Gonna Sing, Elijah Rock, Variations On "America" Bemidji Choir : Almost A Cappella From the 5000 students enrolled at Bemidji State University, on 76 acres of wooded campus on the shore of Lake Bemidji, MN, comes one of the best student choirs we've heard, The Bemidji Choir, founded in 1937. "almost Acappella" is a best-of CD, including 22 songs, from Palestrina's "Exultate Deo" and a group of 5 rose-related songs (Wm. Billings' "The Rose of Sharon," Howells' "A Spotless Rose," Leighton's "Of A Rose is All My Song," John Paynter's "The Rose" and the English Carol "TheRose"), Poulenc's 4 "Motets for the Season of Lent," Benjamin Britten's ''Five Flower Songs," the spiritual "Done Made My Vow to the Lord," and finishing with a pair of piano-accompanied tunes by Gioacchino Rossini, "I Gondolieri" and "La Passaggiata." Spirited, wonderful music, from one of the best in the world! Songlist: Exultate Deo, Sing to the Lord, The Rose of Sharon, A Spotless Rose, Of a Rose is All My Song, The Rose, Of A Rose Sing We, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, By the Waters of Babylon, Timor Et Tremor, Vinea Mea Electa, Tenebrae Factae Sunt, Tristis Est Anima Mea, To Daffodils, The Succession of Four Sweet Months, Marsh Flowers, Evening Primrose, Green Broom, Done Made My Vow to the Lord, Precious Lord, Take My Hand, I Gondolieri, La Passaggiata Cantamus : Joy Called by one observer "probably the best girls' choir in the world," Mansfield, Nottinghamshire's (UK) Cantamus Girls Choir consists of approximately 40 girls aged between 13 and 19. Founded in 1968 by Director Pamela Cook, the Choir has consistently won international competitions such as the "Choir of the World" title 1997 Llangollen Eisteddfod, Olympic Champions title at the World Choir Games 2004 and 2006 and many others. There are 20 songs here, mostly lightly accompanied by accompanist and arranger Michael Neaum. Some of our favorites are "Look to this Day," "La Regata," "O Won't You Sit Down?," "Goin' Up-a-Yonder;" "Pretty Little Horses," "And So It Goes," "Miss You Nights" and "The Rose." Wonderful leads, perfect harmonies - "Joy" is exactly that! Songlist: Look to This Day, White Waves on the Water, The Last Spring, La Regata, Sous le Dome Epais, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Sanctus, O Won't You Sit Down?, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Goin' Up a-Yonder, You Raise Me Up, Pretty Little Horses, Harry, Can You Hear Me?, Hallelujah, And So It Goes, Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, Miss You Nights, The Rose Encore! : Without A Song Mixed quintet (two men, three women) Encore! is acclaimed music educator/performer/arranger/director Kirby Shaw's baby, and is all those things for the group, which includes his wife, Markita, singing alto. 16 classic, somewhat incongruous songs: ("Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" segueways into "Sixteen Tons, for instance, and "Java Jive" into "The Rose"). But luckily, each song is a gem, for which Kirby's flawless arranging and directing is largely responsible. Other favorites: "Ain't Misbehavin'," "If Ever I Would Leave You," "Long Ago (And Far Away)," "The Boy From New York City," and "Without a Song." Kirby and company are having big fun here, and so are we! Songlist: A Cappella, Ain't Misbehavin', Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, Sixteen Tons, If I Ever Would Leave You, Java Jive, The Rose, Shoo-fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy, Long Ago (And Far Away), The Boy from New York City, Johnny Has Gone for A Soldier, Rock Me in the Cradle of Love, Star Spangled Banner, Three Little Fishies, A Joyful Noise, Without A Song Just 4 Kicks : Kick In The Pants Put Randy Crenshaw, Kirby Shaw, Kirk Marcy and Vijay Singh in a recording studio, add guest Joe "Beat Box" Finetti on oh-so-funky vocal percussion, and you've got the kind of down-and-dirty jazz recording that bobbed Grandma's hair! This is bluesy, scat-singing, wide-open, fun jazz that does nothing but add to our Summit-gained admiration for this quartet and for the members individually. 12 cuts, some of our favorites: "Tone Whole," "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," "Oo-Shoo-Be-Do-Be," "Wonderlicks," an homage to 10 Stevie Wonder classics, "Failure to Swing," "What's a Guy Supposed To Do?," the very funny Scottish takeoff, "Donald, Where's Your Trousers?" "Indiana" and the spiritual "Deep River." "Pants" is well-named, a powerful, funny, surprising and impressive kick! Songlist: Tone-Whole, Never Make Your Move Too Soon, Oo-Shoo-Be-Doo-Be, Wonderlicks, A Night In Tunisia, I Get the Neck of the Chicken, Failure to Swing, The Rose, What's A Guy Supposed To Do?, Donald, Where Are Your Trousers?, Indiana, Deep River King's Singers : Circle Of Life With the subtitle of "close-harmony arrangements of timeless songs from famous movies," "Circle Of Life" contains orchestrated versions of well-known themes, such as "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Everything I Do, I Do For You" and "I Will Always Love You." Recorded in Holland in 1996 (with the exception of "Kokomo," the Beach Boys song that appeared on "Spirit Voices"), and therefore available only on import, some of the arrangements are innocuous, while others, such as "Live And Let Die" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" are merely unlikely. An a cappella version of "The Rose," from the film of the same name, is the CD's winner by a landslide. Songlist: Circle of Life, Kiss From a Rose, Kokomo, Wind Beneath My WIngs, It Had to Be You, Live and Let Die, The Time of My Life, I Heard IT Through the Grapevine, Everything I Do, I Do It for You, The Rose, I Will Always Love You, Groovy Kind of Love Kinsey Sicks : Dragapella Yes, this CD is everything the group's name implies, and more! Taking on issues as serious as AIDS and as hilarious as the never-ending pursuit of bodies beautiful (their own or someone else's), this quartet is flagrant in its willingness to gore any sacred cow. The only taste they could be accused of having is musical. The arrangements and harmonies, while not innovative, are perfectly respectable and provide a satisfactory backdrop for the lyrical content. "AZT," a parody of the Jackson Five's "ABC," uses the names of HIV medications in a perfect synchronization of words and rhythm. "Impossible Mission" is a paean to Tom Cruise, "Lifesize Jesus" an homage to Karen Carpenter. The "Kinsey Sicks" theme song is an X-rated group mission statement (Dragapella "puts the sin in syncopation"). The Supremes' "Love Child" is fatally lampooned in "Baster Baby Blues." Dragapella's social satire will be a favorite, no matter your orientation! Songlist: Brava!, Gentle Loving People, Kinsey Sicks Theme Song, Take Me Home to Meet Your Mama, Lifesize Jesus, Men Are Pigs (But Why Keep Kosher?), Be Here Next Year, The Rose, Impossible Mission, Begona's Song, Self-Esteem, Keep Your Hands Away, Worry, Proud Marys, AZT, I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free, Baster Baby Blues, Macaroona, Beaver Mediaeval Baebes : The Rose Nine lovely young women, clad in incredible Mediaeval costumes, look up at us from the extensive, beautiful, full-color liner notes of "The Rose," and we may say that they sound every bit as fine as they appear! Most songs are lightly accompanied by period instruments. 17 songs, of which we particularly enjoyed: "Glass Window," the a cappella "Slay Me Suddenly," the powerful "The Snake," "The Circle of the Lustful," the joyful "Laude Novella," the rhythmic "Dringo Bell," the title tune, "The Woods and The Rivers Are Silent," and the strange, but compelling "Spiriti" and "The Sour Grove." The Baebes carry us away to another time and reality, as impermanent as the Rose, and as beautiful! Songlist: I am Eve, Glass Window, Slay Me Suddenly, The Snake, The Circle of the Lustful, Laude Novella, There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu, Lick the Maypole, Razreesh, Byrd one Brere, Dringo Bell, The Rose, L'amour De Moi, The Woods and The Rivers are Silent, Spiriti, The Sour Grove, Blow Northern Wind Ola Gjeilo : Winter Songs Songlist: The Rose, Ecce Novum, The First Nowell, Days of Beauty, Home, Across the Vast, Eternal Sky, Ave Generosa, First Snow, The Holly & the Ivy, Away in a Manger, Dawn, Coventry Carol, Silent Night, Wintertid, The Rose II Rich-Tone Chorus : One Of A Kind Quite possible the best women's barbershop chorus ever and winner of four Gold medals this is another fine recording from this wonderful group. Some of the great American standards such as "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "God Bless the USA" get the Dale Syverson treatment as well as the fabulous "The Rose" and the touching "I'm Alone Because I Love You" A must have for fans of the ladies barbershop sound. Songlist: Sweet Georgia Brown, The Rose, The Music And The Mirror, Broadway / Star Medley, Broken Heart For Every Light On Broadway, Look For The Silver Lining / Great Day Medley, I Never Knew / I Never Loved Anyone, Let's Hear It For The Boy, All That Jazz, The Nearness of You, I'm Alone Because I Love You, God Bless The USA Vasari Singers : Mass in Blue Leading young composer Will Todd performs a unique fusion of sacred choral music and jazz in his Mass in Blue. This central work is complmented by beautiful musical setting of religious texts, infused with a highly individual and melodic style, bringing the composer's life-long love of traditional choral music into the 21st century with spiritual sensitivity and a contemporary edge. Songlist: Mass In Blue, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, Christus Est Stella, The Christ-Child, Ave Verum Corpus, None Other Lamb, The Rose, Lead Me Lord, Lighting The Way, Every Stone Shall Cry |
