"The Last Rose of Summer" is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. He wrote it in 1805, while staying at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland, where he was said to have been inspired by a specimen of Rosa 'Old Blush'. The poem is set to a traditional tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream", which was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was written by John Andrew Stevenson, several other arrangements followed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Alexander L'Estrange : Danny Boy and Other Classic Irish Melodies The Irish have long been famed for their powerful traditional melodies, and three in this volume are surely amongst the finest. 'Danny Boy' (the melody of which is also known as 'Londonderry Air') was first published, without a title, in 1855. The words most commonly associated with it were written by an Englishman who apparently never set foot in Ireland! 'The lark in the clear air' is an exquisite song celebrating the beauty of nature. The poignant words of 'The last rose of summer' match the song's mournful, drooping melody. Songlist: Danny Boy, The Lark In the Clear Air, The Last Rose of Summer Alexander L'Estrange : Danny Boy and Other Classic Irish Melodies This enchanting collection of traditional Irish melodies showcases three of the finest songs to originate from the 'Emerald Isle' from the classic title song 'Danny Boy' to the poignant 'The Last Rose of Summer' and 'The Lark in Clear Air'. Rubato, mellow blends and dynamic shaping are keys to this Darmon Meader arrangement. It creates the melancholy feelings that are significant in time of war when loved ones are missed and longed for. A beautiful selection for the holidays and the New Year, as well as graduation. "Baby Driver" - Sheer, unbridled fun! For college or adult jazz chorus, this arrangement as sung by the New York Voices is a bit tricky, but well worth the effort. It features incredible harmony and rhythm and some a cappella sections, but the purpose of this piece is not to get technical-just to have fun! Four-part scat singing frames the piece on either end, while your baritone soloist goes to town (with great choral support) on each verse. The poignant words of The Last Rose of Summer, by Thomas Moore, match this song's mournful, drooping melody. After a temporarily uplifting modulation for the third verse, where the men of the choir echo the melody two measures behind, the arrangement ends as it began---in a solitary mood, with an empty, bare fifth. Faber Choral Singles offer a series of beautifully crafted arrangements in a diversity of musical styles for today's choirs. From Broadway, pop and folk to spirituals, gospel and original works, the Faber Choral Singles series guarantees the perfect repertoire for every occasion.

A tender and graceful arrangement by Greg Gilpin of a captivating Irish ballad. This simple, yet deceptively subtle arrangement includes quite a bit of unison and 2-part writing, saving the mixed part writing for powerful effect. The piano accompaniment is a classic and adds much to this arrangement's appeal.
