Vintage material, including several Fats Waller compositions from the era of jump and stride, dominate, recognizing the stylistic contributions of jazz and blues to barbershop. Whether the old-fashioned sentimentality of "No One Loves You Better Than Your M-A-DOUBLE M-Y," "I Never Knew - I Could Love Anyone Like I'm Loving You" and "Handful of Keys" - sung with lightening bolt energy - or the slower ballads, "I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling," and "All By Myself," which are conjugated with laserlike focus, Ambiance combines passion with incredible chops. Songlist: Ain't Misbehavin', Lookin' Good But Feelin' Bad, 'Taint Nobody's Bizness If I Do, It's a Sin To Tell a Lie, I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling, Handful of Keys, (Oh Suzanna) Dust off That Old Pianna, The Joint Is Jumpin', I Never Knew - I Could Love Anyone Like I'm Loving You, You Were Meant For Me, Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans, All by Myself, No One Loves You Better Than Your M-a-double-m-y, Kiss Me One More Time Gem City Chorus : From The Heart Gem City won the Sweet Adelines Internationals in the Chorus Category an unprecedented five times! How did they do it? Great material, enthusiastically performed and dynamically arranged! Makes it sound simple, doesn't it? Directed by Jean Barford, this Dayton Ohio aggregate's sound is as unified as can be, its articulation crisp, timing right on the money. "As Time Goes By" is swung a little faster than average, "How's Every Little Thing In Dixie" exaggerates the phrasing effectively, hurrying through the tune like the March Hare. Other great songs: "Mississippi Medley," "The Joint Is Jumpin'," and "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing Medley." Songlist: This Is The Moment, Showtime, Sentimental Journey, Runnin' Wild, End Of The Road, Billy-A-Dick, As Time Goes By, How's Every Little Thing In Dixie, God Bless America, Battle Hymn Of The Republic, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, The Joint Is Jumpin', Heartaches, Alabama Jubilee Bound Medley, That's What God Made Mothers For, One Of Those Songs, Mississippi Medley, Wild Beneath My Wings, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) Harborlites : Something's Coming Based in Anaheim, California, the Harborlites Chorus was founded in 1960 and since 1993 has been under the direction of Pam Pieson, the 1990 queen of harmony of the highly regarded Panache quartet. The chorus are winners of numerous regional and international medals and this is their first ever CD recording. Plenty of great Sweet Adeline singing here with particular favorites being the Jay Giallombardo arrangement of Sondheim's "Tonight", the David Wright arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's' "Something's Coming (from West Side Story) and the entertaining opening medley of "Ain't Misbehavin'/Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do." Songlist: Ain't Misbehavin / Ani't Nobody's Bizness If I Do, It's Sand Man, When Day Is Done, The Joint Is Jumpin', With One Look, My Honey's Lovin' Arms, Roses Of Yesterday, You Gotta Have Heart, It's Time, Once Upon a Time, Tonight, Something's Coming Masters Of Harmony : Masterpiece A masterpiece is a work which proves beyond doubt the mastery of a certain discipline. This recording is no exception for those of us who weren't fortunate to be present when The Masters of Harmony, under the direction of Dr. Greg Lyne, won the gold medal and were acclaimed International Chorus Champions in both l990 and l993. Masterpiece begins with a long fascinating medley of nine Jerome Kern songs with an announcer giving brief historical notes in between the excerpts. This is a great recording. "Puttin' On The Ritz" and "Ya Got Trouble" are likely to become standards by which other choruses measure their progress, in fact this whole album will! Songlist: Jerome Kern Medley, Puttin' On the Ritz, There Used to Be a Ballpark Right Here, Ya Got Trouble, When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, Deep River, I Had Someone Else Before I Had You/ Who' s Sorry Now?, You Keep Coming Back Like a Song, How to Build a Chorus, The Joint Is Jumpin', Make Our Garden Grow, Soliloquy Sweet Adelines : Top Choruses 2003 Beautiful Phoenix, AZ was graced in 2003 by a gentle invasion of Sweet Adelines Choruses, all intent on capturing the gold. In the end, Northbrook, IL's Melodeers Chorus got to wear those golden necklaces, Pride of Baltimore Chorus placed second and Richardson TX's Rich-Tone Chorus placed third. The CD begins with two songs from 10th place finisher Spirit of Detroit Chorus, and two from Providence, RI's Coastline Show Chorus, and so on until 5th place finisher Toast of Tampa Show Chorus brings us 3 tunes. Finally the Melodeers perform four tunes from their winning set, "How Many Hearts Have You Broken," "If I Give My Heart To You," "My Melancholy Baby" and "Lulu's Back In Town," clearly saving the best for last. All the excitement of the live competition, and the best Sweet Adelines choruses in the world! This year we have North Metro Chorus in 3rd place, the Melodeers in 2nd, and champions this year were the Rich Tone Chorus, of Richardson, Texas. Some of today's, and yesterday's, finest songs were transformed into tight barbershop arrangements and sung with gusto by these choruses, who were all very deserving of their spot in the top 10.
