The song was published in 1942 and has become an often-recorded standard with versions that include the original single release by Glenn Miller, the singers Margaret Whiting, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Mercer himself, and others. Mercer wrote the lyrics with Judy Garland in mind, who was, on occasion, an intimate partner. Garland recorded the song for Decca Records in 1942. Mercer recalled wanting to write a song about magic, and while composing, asking Arlen to write more music so the song could go on longer, but that they still wrote the whole song in about three hours.

This particular effort titled "Sing Sing Sing", the Louis Prima title track, is seasoned with Traditionals of the Jazz, Americana, English and Folk kind. Upon hearing, it is very easy to detect how much fun these guys are having. Sometimes certain music is best seen live, and it is roaringly apparent that this group is an incredible sight to see. These men sing with so much expression, you might feel you are right there in the audience. Songlist: That Old Black Magic, Sing, Sing, Sing, The Heather On The Hill, What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?, Let's Get Away From It All, My Wonderful One, Royal Garden Blues, South Rampart Street Parade, Orange Colored Sky, Mississippi Mud, Hard Times Come Again No More, When I Lift Up My Head, Betelehemu Mel Torme & The Mel-Tones : Live With The Mel-Tones Vol 1 Mel Torme is not only a reknowned pop singer (dubbed the "Velvet Fog") but an equally respected writer and arranger, who began his career as a toddler, singing on radio. Mel had a TV show on NBC in 1948, and the songs on this CD were collected largely from that production, featuring co-stars from the program, such as Barbara Eiler, who duets with Mel on "The French Lesson." Imagine a MGM musical of the sort that was produced after World War II, and that's the mood: romantic and innocent, with a big band sound, as typified by "You're The Cream In My Coffee" and "Red Red Robin." Mel's style is relaxed, while absolutely musical; the Mel Tones jump in with close harmony support and schtick as their roles as musical variety sidekicks require. One of the albums' highlights is surely "Everything Happens To Me," the pathos of which is offset by Mel's deadpan delivery. Songlist: Fairmont College, You're Driving Me Crazy, You're the Top, That Old Black Magic, When The Red, Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along, Everything Happens To Me, It's A Most Unusual Day, Maybe You'll Be There, Geometric Blues, The French Lesson, It's Dark On Observatory Hill, I've Got The Sun In The Morning And The Moon At Night, On A Slow Boat To China, Brahms' Lullaby, You're The Cream In My Coffee, I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues, Mountain Greenery, Here I'll Stay, Wish I May, Wish I Might The Suntones : Masterwork Series Miami, Florida's Suntones, formed in 1957 singing innovative arrangements of "Old Black Magic" and Hi-Lo's songs, finally won SPEBSQSA Quartet Gold in 1961. They went on to record extensively and seek professional bookings outside of barbershop circles, causing them to perfect their act, and helping to create a world of possibilities for top-drawer barbershop groups in the entertainment industry. "Suntones" is a "best-of" collection of 23 songs, certainly tough choices given the large number of excellent recordings by the group. From the first cut, "Bye, Bye Blues," the final tune in their Gold-winning set that became a trademark for them, we see how special this group is. "After You've Gone," which begins straight, introduces a major 7th chord, jazzy 2nd chorus and wild and crazy tag. "If You Can't Tell the World She's A Good Little Girl," "Old Songs Medley" showed that even though they tended toward daring innovations, they never lost their love of the simple, "square" barbershop songs. "Danny Boy," "That Old Black Magic," "West Side Story Medley," "Jezebel," "Where Is Love," "Show Me Where The Good Times Are," "Tennessee Waltz," "Shrimp Boats" and "For All We Know" need to be listened to again and again to appreciate the chances the Suntones took, and how solid the barbershop fundamentals were that formed their base. "Suntones" is an amazing recording on many levels, and certainly mandatory listening for aspiring quartets to expand their horizons. Songlist: Bye Bye Blues, Emaline, After You've Gone, If You Can't Tell The World She's A God Little Girl, Old Songs Medley, Danny Boy, No, No, Nora, Finian's Rainbow Medley, That Old Black Magic, A Little Street Where Old Friends Meet, West Side Story Medley, It's A Most Unusual Day, Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, Jezbel, Where Is Love?, Watch What Happens, As Time Goes By, Two Guy Medley, Show Me Where The Good Times Are, Tennessee Waltz, Shrimp Boats, Armed Forces Medley, For All We Know Ella Fitzgerald : Live at Montreux, 1969 Eagle Eye Media's Live In Montreux series continues with a travel through time to June 22, 1969, featuring a performance from The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. Featuring fully restored Black and White footage and remixed audio in 5.1 and DTS, this program presents a stunning performance from one of the most versatile jazz singers of all time. After making a name for herself as the featured singer for Chick Webb's Orchestra in the late 1930's, she began appearing as part of Norman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic series. She fronted for Duke Ellington, where she learned her bop style and also began adding scat into her performances. Her recordings of standards and contemporary classics helped boost her career from the 1950's until her final recordings in 1992. Joining Fitzgerald in this performance are: Tommy Flanagan (piano), Frank de la Rosa (bass), and Ed Thigpen (drums). Songlist: Give Me the Simple Life, This Girl's in Love With You, I Won't Dance, A Place for Lovers, That Old Black Magic, Useless Landscape, I Love You Madly, Trouble Is a Man, A Man and a Woman, Sunshine of Your Love, Well Alright Okay You Win, Hey Jude, Scat Medley, A House Is Not A Home |
