The redoubtable Keepsake have consistently impressed with their musical fluency and extensive barbershop vocabulary. The richness of the voices melting into and enveloping the notes, shaping them into the perfect creamy consistency-the satisfaction of a fully-realized barbershop chord! "Once Upon A Time" includes many classic tunes such as "Roses of Picardy," "Sweet Georgia Brown," and a dynamite "Ring Out the Bells in Dixieland," making it their most traditional recording to our ears. However, the melody of "Easy Street," with it's flatted non-diatonic "blue" notes, (heralding the fusion of jazz and blues that would become doo-wop) is fresh, and along with "Chances Are" and "I Only Have Eyes For You," gives an added dimension that is of equal enjoyment.

Dubbed "The Prince of Pops" by the Chicago Tribune, Erich Kunzel's Cincinnati Pops Orchestra has been nominated for 5 Grammies under his direction, winning one in 1998, and we have to say that this is some of the best, most spirited big-band swing we've ever heard. Of special interest to us, of course, are the vocals, which are supplied by one of our favorite jazz groups, The Manhattan Transfer, former (and founding) member of the MT, 9-time Grammy winner Janis Siegel, and inventive singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli. There are 14 all accompanied (in fact, 7 of them are completely instrumental) tunes here, and not surprisingly our favorites are "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," "Sugar" (That Sugar Baby of Mine), "Skyliner," and "Clouds" (adapted from "Nuages,") featuring the MT; "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Avalon" with John Pizzarelli; and "I'll Be Seeing You," with Janis Siegel. As we would place the Swing Era at or near the top of all musical eras, we thought "Got Swing" was a treat, and every tune gave us the urge to get up and dance!

Quite possible the best women's barbershop chorus ever and winner of four Gold medals this is another fine recording from this wonderful group. Some of the great American standards such as "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "God Bless the USA" get the Dale Syverson treatment as well as the fabulous "The Rose" and the touching "I'm Alone Because I Love You" A must have for fans of the ladies barbershop sound.

The 61st Annual Sweet Adelines International 2007 Convention and Competition took place in Calgary, Saskatchewan, and this wonderful live CD gives us a generous helping of the colorful chorus competition. One only has to glance at the photos of the top ten finishers in the sparse liner notes to get a taste of the color and excitement of this event. Anaheim, CA's Harborlites Chorus took the gold, Pride of Baltimore 2nd, Lions Gate Chorus from Vancouver, BC, Coastline Show Chorus from Providence, RI 4th, and Kansas City Chorus took 5th place. Harborlites has four winners here, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," "A Bundle of Old Love Letters," "When Day Is Done" and "Sweet Georgia Brown;" the 2nd through 4th place finishers have 3 songs each, and the 6th through 10th place winners, which include the Toast of Tampa Show Chorus, Greater Nassau Chorus, Mountain Jubilee Chorus, Christchurch City Chorus from New Zealand, and the Choral-Aires Chorus, all have 2 tunes each. A powerful, richly harmonic, touching collection of Sweet Adelines' best!

All male sextet Take 6, one of the most innovative and influential Contemporary Christian a cappella groups of all time, was formed at Oakwood College in Alabama in the early 1980s. In 1988 they released "Take 6" nationally, and won Grammies for both best Jazz and best Gospel group. After 9 groundbreaking, critically acclaimed releases, this long-awaited recording, aptly named "the standard," returns to those jazz roots, covering standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Straighten Up and Fly Right" (featuring George Benson), the scattish "Seven Steps to Heaven" (featuring Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau and Till Bronner), the moody a cappella "Windmills of Your Mind," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "A Tisket A Tasket" (featuring a sample of the original recording by Ella Fitzgerald), the whimsical "Bein' Green" (with an unexpected Obama plug at the end), the a cappella "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (featuring Aaron Neville and some great faux horns), and a jazzy a cappella cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (featuring Brian McNight). This year's program was the most diverse and exciting yet. Filled with emerging groups, as well as Sweepstakes favorites such as Chicago Voice Exchange, the competition was intense indeed. Seven, from New York, garnered top honors, with their intricate and multi-textured voicings, heard to best advantage on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; the group's arrangements are expanding the universe of sound. Taking second place were the Standards, five brothers whose onstage appeal and energy charmed everyone. Minimum Wage's outrageous humor, as exemplified by "The Last Cowboy Song," had the audience begging for mercy (or more?) Other musical highlights include the ringing tones of last year's champs, Metropolis (a barbershop quartet), the Euphorics, with "Message In A Bottle" and Pickup 6's medley of Beatles favorites.
