"Summertime" is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin by ASCAP.[
The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard, described as "without doubt ... one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote ... Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century". Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim has characterized Heyward's lyrics for "Summertime" and "My Man's Gone Now" as "the best lyrics in the musical theater" The song is recognized as among the most covered songs in the history of recorded music, with more than 33,000 covers by groups and solo performers
Release Date: 1935
Unlike the original ballad heard in the opera Porgy and Bess and sung by a high soprano, here is an easy swing rendition and placed in a key that is comfortable for developing voices. The section with a written out scat solo can be easily repeated for those choirs learning to improvise.

David Blackwell / Andrew Carter (Edited by) : In the Mood In the mood is an anthology of choral arrangements of seventeen classic popular songs by great names such as Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Richard Rogers. All the pieces are expertly arranged to suit the needs of amateur SATB groups looking for lighter popular repertoire -- school choirs, youth schoirs, or chamber choirs of any description. There's a mixture of accompanied and unaccompanied numbers, and a variety of styles: smoky blues, up-tempo sat, sentimental swing, exuberant Dixieland, sophisticated close-harmony, plu an opulent show-stopper or two like 'Somewhere over the rainbow'. These five European chaps obviously have a fondness for these particularly American forms; "Climbing Up The Mountain," "Summertime," "Satin Doll," and "Sophisticated Lady" are the mediums for Alti & Bassi's swinging big band style. Vocal orchestrations and scat are vital ingredients, and the group has a great deal of skill and versatility. Their gospel turn on "I'm Rolling Through This Unfriendly World" is warm and convincing. Occasional piano accompaniment. Songlist: Tu vo fa' f'americano, Climbing up the Mountain, Down by the Riverside, Fugue with Satin Doll, Quando canta Rabagliati, Jusus Gave Me Water, Satin Doll, Summertime, I'm Rolling Thorough This Unfriendly World, When the Saints Go Marchin' In, Jazz, Sphisticated Lady, Dueling Voices Alti & Bassi : Favoloso Gershwin "Il Favoloso" is our favorite all-male Italian quartet's singing tribute to legendary American composer George Gershwin. Eight of the 11 covers here are by George, one, a lovely a cappella rendition of "The Man I Love," is by George and his brother Ira. One tune, A.E. Negri's "Charleston Prelude," and Zapponi-Luttazzi's title tune, complete the songlist, most of which are live and accompanied. Favorites include "Scandal Walk," "Naughty Baby," "I Got Rhythm," Medley, including "Preludio No. 2," "An American in Paris" and "Rhapsody in Blue," and the bluesy "Summertime." A fun, entertaining collection from Alti & Bassi! Songlist: Scandal Walk, Naughty Baby, Rose of Madrid, The Man I Love, I Got Rhythm, Rhapsody Medley, Liza, Summertime, Charleston Prelude, I'd Rather Charleston, Il Faboloso Gershwin Barbershop Harmony Society : Top Choruses 2004 Louisville KY also, of course, hosted the 2004 SPEBSQSA International Chorus Competition, which in terms of shear vocal power, is unmatched on this planet! The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile." A powerful, amazing collection! Songlist: I Have Dreamed, Make Them Hear You, medley: Comptown Raves/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals, Summertime, The Sunshine Of Your Smile, When It's Night Time To Dixieland, My Foolish Heart, Medley: I Used To Love You/There'll Be Some Changes Made/Five Foot Two, Eyes, Of Blue/Yes Sir, That's My Baby, So Long, mother, Blues In The Night, You'll Never Know, Medley: how Do I Get Outta This Chicken Outfit/Charleston/Stormy Weather, Auld Lang Syne, Button up Your Overcoat, How Deep Is The Ocean, Medley: Everybody Step/Alexander's Ragtime Band, Girls Medley: Margie/No No Nora/Ma Blushin' Rosie, Medley: Get Out And Get Under The Moon/Shine on Harvest Moon, Nice Work If You Can Get It, On The Sunny Side of the Street, If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby Blue Jupiter : Twisted Broadway 2017 release. Blue Jupiter, a New York City-based contemporary a cappella group, announces the release of Twisted Broadway Volume 1 (An A Cappella Album). Twisted Broadway delivers classic Broadway show tunes, but each has been twisted, boldly re-imagined in Blue Jupiter's high energy a cappella style. Listeners will immediately recognize the hits from classic shows like Wicked, Pippin, Porgy and Bess, The Sound of Music, Chicago, The Wizard of Oz, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and more. But they've never heard them like this before. Where groups like Post Modern Jukebox, deliver modern songs in old fashioned styles, Blue Jupiter prefers time travel in the opposite direction. Twisted Broadway features classic Broadway songs with a wickedly modern, contemporary a cappella sound. Songlist: I Got the Sun in the Mornin', Magic to Do, My Favorite Things, Over the Rainbow, Summertime, Defying Gravity, Close Every Door, All That Jazz, Whatever Lola Wants, Put on a Happy Face, Let It Go, Over the Rainbow (Reprise) Calmus Ensemble : One More Song This release by the Leipzig-based Calmus Ensemble follows on the ensemble's recent tour of the US and features remarkable a cappella arrangements of more than a century of popular songs made popular by artists from the Comedian Harmonists to Queen, plus three original songs composed for the Calmus Ensemble by Fredo Jung, including their signature encore Rondo. Songlist: Wenn ich Vergnugt Bin, Muss Ich Singen, Wohlgefuhl, Bongo Bong, Lullabye / Good Night My Angel, One More Night, Son of a Preacherman, Bring Back that Leroy Brown, Barbara, Wochenend und Sonnenschein, Fragile, Summertime, Kiss from a Rose, Got to Get You Into My Life, Ich Hab Ka Lust, Rondo Cantabile - The London Quartet : Madrigal to McCartney "Madrigal" was recorded at Victoria Memorial Hall in Singapore in February 2001, and features 15 tunes, ranging from sacred early Christian music like Weelkes' "Hark, all ye lovely Saints above," Passereau's "Il est bel et bon," and Wm. Byrd's "Agnus Dei" to a wonderful "Tribute to the Beatles" medley of 18 Fab Four classics and "Yesterday," to Gershwin's "Summertime," Rodgers and Hart's "My Romance" and Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night." Two bonus tracks include Richard Rodney Bennett's "A Good Night," commissioned by Paul McCartney from "A Garland for Linda," and "Brahm's Lullaby." Certainly an odd repertoire mix, but Cantabile's perfectly pitched, fresh, joyous sound works well with just about anything they choose to perform. Songlist: Hark, all ye lovely Saints above, Comment, amour, me veux-tu tourmenter?, Il est bel et bon, Agnus Dei (from the Mass of Four Voices), A Tribute ot the Beatles, The Compleat Works, The Long Day Closes, Summertime, My Romance, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Strangers in the Night, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight, Yesterday, A Good-Night, Brahms' Lullaby Chicago Children's Choir : Do You Hear The People Sing? "Do You Hear The People Sing" was recorded at the CCC's four and a half week tour of South Africa in the summer of 1996. The 44 choir members, of many races, perform spirituals, gospel songs, African, Columbian and Korean songs, "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, and a medley of West Side Story tunes. The excitement of these live performances shines through, as does the spirit and talent of these young voices. Songlist: Deo Dicamus Gratias, Bells, Wanting Memories, Mamelani, Unonkal, Nodle Kangbyon, Prende la Vela, Plink, Plank, Plunk, Stomp Your Foot, Summertime, West Side Story Medley, Do You Hear the People Sing?, Elijah Rock, He Never Failed Me Yet, When the Saints Go Marching In Cuesta Voce : Timepieces Voce is San Luis Obispo, CA's Cuesta College's finest Vocal Jazz 9 mixed-voice ensemble, and "Timepieces" is recorded with a hot five-man student Jazz band. Formed in 1981, Voce has won an Outstanding Performance Award from DownBeat, first place at the 1998 Reno Jazz Festival and performances at Switzerland's prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival. There are 10 cuts on this impressive second album (their first was 2007's excellent "Just One of Those Things"), some favorites among these sometimes accompanied pieces are Michel LeGrand's "I Will Wait for You," Anders Edenroth's a cappella "The Grass Grows Greener," the mellow "Something 'bout Believing," George & Ira Gershwin's classic "Summertime," Thad Jones' moody a cappella "Somna Mitt Barn," a sweet a cappella adaption of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and Imogen Heap's wonderfully harmonic a cappella "Hide and Seek." Voce has a beautiful sound, creative arrangements, and we loved "Timepieces!" Songlist: I Will Wait For You, I've Got No Strings, The Grass Grows Greener, Something 'Bout Believing, Somna Mitt Barn, Jeannine, Summertime, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Turn Your Love Around, Hide and Seek Hi-Lo's : Clap Yo' Hands Comprising two of their records from the 1950's-1954's "I Presume" and 1958's "In Stereo"-"Clap Yo' Hands" captures the close harmony sound of the Hi-Lo's, who defined the vocal jazz of their era. The playground for the talents of the brilliant arranger Gene Puerling, who went on to form the Singers Unlimited, the Hi-Lo's toured with theJudy Garland show and sang with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. These tracks are orchestrated (by Frank Comstock, who backed the group on many early recordings) and include wonderful standards such as "Summertime," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." This is a jubilant recording that is alive with the joy of music. We have it on good authority that "Clap Yo' Hands" includes some of the group's favorite songs. Songlist: Clap Yo' Hands, Long Ave and Far Away, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Shadow Waltz, Chinatown, My Chinatown, Too Young for the Blues, Summertime, You Took Advantage of Me, Birth of the Blues, Surrey With the Fringe on Top, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Jeepers Creepers, I Thought About You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Stars Fell on Alabama, Rockin' Chair Hi-Lo's : Under Glass / I Presume A spate of Hi-Lo's albums have been recently released on CD, but this may be the most auspicious re-emergence yet: the Hi-lo's first two records, paired up for over an hour's worth of great listening. Though some of the cuts can be found on other recordings, the a cappella "Molly Malone" and "Through The Years" aren't available anywhere else, and the remarkable harmonizations that were Gene Puerling's unique artistry are gloriously displayed in a riot of tonal color. Also, "Georgia On My Mind," and "They Don't Believe Me," from their first 1953 recording session for Trend, are included; the latter was on the previously available "Nice Work If You Can Get It" CD, which has since been discontinued. Anyway, suffice it to say, that among the vocal harmony groups of the 1950's, the Hi-lo's were much imitated, but never duplicated, and their appeal is timeless. Mostly accompanied, with orchestrations by frequent music director Frank Comstock. Songlist: Summertime, The Birth Of The Blues, Skylark, Through The Years, Shadow Waltz, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Chinatown, My Chinatown, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, In The Blue Of The Evening, Molly Malone, You're the Top, Long Ago And Far Away, Rockin' Chair, Stars Fell On Alabama, Nice Work If You Can Get It, I Thought About You, This Is The Night, Too Young For The Blues, Jeepers Creepers, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Shoeless Joe From Hannibal Mo, They Didn't Believe Me, Georgia On My Mind Hi-Lo's : A Musical Thrill A musical thrill indeed! Vocal jazz at its best with the arrangements of the genius himself Gene Puerling. Songlist: June In July, Little White Lies, I Don't Want To Cry Anymore, She's Funny That Way, Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets), Island Of Desire, You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me, Fools Rush In, Have You Met Miss Jones, Where Are You, You Can't Hardly Get There Any More, Rockin' Chair, Stars Fell On Alabama, Nice Work If You Can Get It, I Thought About You, This Is The Night, Too Young For The Blues, Jeepers Creepers, Speak Low, Button Up Your Overcoat, Put Your Dreams Away, Shoeless Joe, They Didn't Believe Me, Peg O' My Heart, My Baby Just Cares For Me, Georgia On My Mind, Clap Yo' Hands, Mam'Selle, Lulu's Back In Town, Indian Summer, and more Hi-Lo's : In Stereo! A vintage audiophile vocal pop record originally released in 1959, "The Hi-Lo's In Stereo" features the popular 1950's vocal group The Hi-Lo's backed by Frank Comstock and his orchestra. One of the first LPs to introduce the true sound of stereo to the listening public, the classic album is presented here newly remastered. Songlist: Surry With The Fringe On Top, Birth Of The Blues, You Took Advantage Of Me, Summertime, Too Young For The Blues, Chinatown My Chinatown, Shadow Waltz, You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby, Long Ago And Far Away, Clap Your Hands House Jacks : Get Down Mr President From one of the earliest practitioners of the modern a cappella sound the House Jacks have remained on the cutting edge of contemporary vocal harmony for many years. This latest release was recorded live in Europe where the group tours regularly and has built up a large and loyal following. There are 10 new original songs plus 4 covers and a new arrangement of audience favorite "Bam" on this fine release and the group rocks as always. Founding member Deke Sharon is well known in a cappella circles for his published arrangements and vocal percussionist Wes Caroll is considered to be one of the best mouth drummers around. Songlist: Bam, Believe, Summertime, The Only One I Want Around, This'll Do, Give It Up, The Leavin' Kind, They Won't Cry For You, Great Big USA, No Ride, Use Me, Since U Been Gone, Just Fine, Rock You, What A Wonderful World Hyannis Sound : Aged 10 Years In May of 1994 ten young collegiate men, who had been chosen by founder Townsend Belisle, arrived in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with the noble intention of singing together for a living. Creating jobs for themselves by singing on the street, in parks, on beaches and had regular gigs in places like Thompson's Clam Bar and Richard's Galleries. By late summer they had put together a crowd of regulars, an opening act for the Mamas and the Papas, and a sold-out show in Hyannis, which is captured in this live recording. 21 songs, particularly wonderful are: "Good Ol' A Cappella," "Summertime," the Fairfield Four's arrangement of "Roll, Jordan Roll," "Crazy," "House of Blue Lights," "Wonderful World," the traditional "Drunken Sailor," Manhattan Transfer's arrangement of "How High The Moon," Richard Greene's "Share A Load," "Freeze Frame," a lovely "Shenandoah" and "Everything She Wants." It's very clear from the audience response how much fun these guys are having on stage, reveling in the vocal group they have created in such a short time. An inspiring story, a lively live show with an enthusiastic audience, a repertoire well-chosen and arranged. The Sound Is Coming! Songlist: Good Ol' A Cappella, Sister Goldenhair, Summertime, Spiderman, Roll, Jordan, Crazy, L-Y, House of Blue Lights, Wonderful World, Oh, What a Night, Drunken Sailor, Why Should I Cry for You?, Future Love Paradise, How High the Moon, Share a Load, Captain's Song, Freeze Frame, Shenandoah, World on Fire, Everything She Wants, A Parting Blessing King's Singers : Original Debut Recording (Cherry Ripe) The prototype for what has developed into a twenty-five year career that continues to grow in popularity, this initial 1971 recording hints at the dominion the King's Singers have over an astonishing variety of material. Four tracks are a cappella, the rest accompanied by the Gordon Langford Trio (Langford also arranged five of the songs). Traditionals, such as "Shenandoah, "Cherry Ripe" and "Scarborough Fair" are side-by-side with Gershwin's "Summertime" and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers." Stylistically, the King's Singers combine formal classical knowledge with the immaculate blend of a barbershop chorus and the personality of English music hall performers appearing on the "Old Grey Whistle Test." No wonder they've stood the test of time! Songlist: The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah, Cherry Ripe, Summertime, Time Was, Scarborough Fair, None But The Lonely Heart, Linstead Market, The Oak And The Ash, Wives And Lovers, Blow Away The Morning Dew, The Green Leaves Of Summer, What Kind Of Things Lambert, Hendricks and Ross : Everybody's Boppin' To listen to this trio reveals what a great influence this group has been on so many artists, in terms of choice of material and style. The most sophisticated and hip vocal treatments - Hendricks was a foremost developer of the vocalese technique - they change moods on a dime and are impossible to predict. Ross takes the lead on "Midnight Indigo," a sultry trickle of sweat on the back of the neck. "Moanin'" mixes up roadhouse blues with the sweetest of refrains. "Summertime" is just on the inside of a discordant wail, an eerie lament. Also included: "Cloudburst" and "Centerpiece." Songlist: Charleston Alley, Moanin', Twisted, Bijou, Cloudburst, Centerpiece, Gimme That WIne, Stemonette, Summertime, Everbody's Boppin', Home Cookin', Blue, Come On Home, Cottontail, Midnight Indigo Nexus Quartet : Nexus This Denver-based quartet has roots in the Denver A Cappella Project, and includes tenor George (of 1982 Gold Medal-winners Classic Collection), his son Mike, baritone, bass Mark and lead Ryan. At the 2007 Barbershop Harmony Society contest in Denver, Following the release of this, their debut recording, NeXus moved up from 27th place to 19th place in the elite top 20 in only their 3rd year of competition. We particularly appreciated the songlist in the liner notes, that included some of the group's influences: "Just A Gigolo," inspired by Classic Collection, "The Dock of the Bay" and "Stand By Me," inspired by Rockapella, and "Don't Worry Be Happy," inspired by the Blenders. Other favorites are "Orange Colored Sky," "Gospel Medley," a bluesy "Summertime," "Under the Boardwalk," and "Mean to Me." Great stuff from this popular, fast-rising, veteran quartet! Songlist: Love Is Just Around The Corner, Just a Gigolo, The Dock Of The Bay, Fit As A Fiddle, If I Had You, Orange Colored Sky, These Foolish Things, Stand By Me, Gospel Medley, Summertime, Under the Boardwalk, Mean To Me, Don't Worry Be Happy Regency : Regency Five guys came out of the Somerset Housing Projects in Baltimore who sang anywhere and everywhere-at the Jack in the Box they were known as the Box Boys. That name changed to Regency, and with many collegiate music awards and some personnel changes later, the group tours over 300 universities and colleges a year. At 1 pm on June 27, 1994, Regency went into the recording studio to eat Philly steaks and fries, and to sing and sing some more. At 10 pm they had finished an incredible recording session, 21 songs completed a cappella without overdubs or studio trickery. Some favorites are a pair of Presley covers, "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog," Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," The Righteous Bros' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen," James Brown's "I Got You," The Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," "The Most Beautiful Girl In the World," the Isley Bros' "Shout," and "Day-O" (Banana Boat Song). This is the authentic street corner Doo Wop, with a bunch of guys who know each other as absolutely as they know the songs. This CD is a remarkable achievement and a real treat! Songlist: Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, Johnny B Goode, I'm Ready, Tutti Frutti, Don't Play That Song, You've Last That Lovin' Feeling, Can't Help Falling In Love With You, Higher And Higher, Only Sixteen, Baby Watcha Want Me To Do/ Bright Lights Big City Medley, I Got You (I Feel Good), Summertime, Good Lovin', Let's Get It On, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday, Lady Soul, Sadie, Shout, Day-O (Banana Boat Song) Talisman : Shine Diversity in people, through songs we unite. Talisman, collectively Stanford's best singers, marked its genesis in 1990 and realized success in great proportions even through times of uncertain destiny. Shine captivates the decade long history of Talisman A Cappella with a double cd featuring tribes of Talisman past and present and an excellent mix of cultural music adaptated from songs by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bill Withers, Ulali, Miriam Makeba and Hans Zimmer. Every song will send shivers down your backbone, but keep your ears open for "Sechaba" "Babethandaza", "No Mirrors", "Wanting Memories", "Paycheck", "Lean On Me", and "The Rainmaker". Diversity in people, through songs we unite. A phrase worth repeating. Songlist: Babethandaza, Akanamandla, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Siyaya eJerusalema, Sechaba, Lean on Me, Keep Your Eyes on the Prize, Adiemus, When I Die Tomorrow, Hombe, Hallelujah, Baba Yetu, Zulu Seliyaduma, If We Ever, Glory, Glory, Amazing Grace, One by One, N'kosi Sikelel' Africa, No Mirrors, Makh Jchi, Anina Jiame, Denko, Tell My Feet, Dubula, Zombie Jamboree, Paycheck, Summertime, Sharanu Ninnage, Senzenina, Wanting Memories, and more Tribunes : Doo Wop Acappella The Tribunes give us that street corner feel with their a cappella renditions of such doo wop gems as "Story Untold", "Diamonds And Pearls" and "What Time Is It." Songlist: Diamonds and Pearls, Story Untold, Little Darlin', If You Want To, Come Go With Me, What Time Is It?, Under The Boardwalk, Summertime, Sixteen Candles, Over The Rainbow Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 1993 Songlist: Stay With Me Tonight, Summertime, Sign Your Name, Marooned in a Blizzard of Lies, That Lonesome Road, St. Elsewhere Theme, Kiss, Johnny, Shamalama Ding Dong, Jeepers Creepers, Wonderwoman, Whiter Shade of Pale, Big and Stupid, Stand By Me/On Broadway Medley Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 2003 We're of the almost certainly biased opinion that the Harmony Sweeps Finals are the best a cappella shows in the world. Imagine 8 groups, who have come in first in Regional competition with 10 other groups in places like New York, Boston, the Bay Area, Chicago and LA, performing before a packed auditorium in San Rafael, CA for 12 minutes each, for the coveted National Championship. Each year outdoes the last, and "electric" doesn't do justice to the 2003 Finals. There are 18 songs on the CD, two from each group and two from '02 Champs, and very funny hosts, LA's Perfect Gentlemen, "Gimme Some Skin" and the guitar accompanied (!) "Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me." The Bay Area's hilarious Moosebutter brings us "Psycho, The Musical," winner of "Best Original Song" (lyrics), and their trademark parody, "Star Wars," part of a set that won them 2nd place honors. The Pacific NW's Second Chance contribute a funky "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the very funny beach song parody "Sand Down My Pants." LA's Undivided Musical Group sing "Amarte Mas" and nail Ward Swingle's arrangement of "Mission Impossible Theme." Boston's All About Buford do wonderful covers of the Gershwins' "Summertime" and Rodgers & Hart's "My Funny Valentine." Chicago's Nightwatch sing two songs from their infamous "Diner Set" (complete with ballistic donut), "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," and New York's very smooth Cadence covers "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Tempted' beautifully. Denver's Groove Society gets the crowd up and rocking with "You're No Good" and the classic "Listen to the Music." Unbelievably, as good as all these groups were, the best was saved for last, Mid-Atlantic winner Idea of North from Australia, who shine on "Mas Que Nada" (which won the David Lichtman Award for Best Arrangement) and Randy Newman's heart-tugging "When She Loved Me." Idea of North got the nod from the judges, and won Audience Favorite, while Moosebutter and Cadence placed 2nd and 3rd. A chorus of "Goodnight Sweetheart" later we were all walking out of beautiful Marin Veterans Auditorium, not believing how good a show we had just seen and heard! Songlist: Mas Que Nada, Amarte Mas, Psycho: The Musical, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, My Funny Valentine, Truck Drivin' Man, Gimme Some Skin, Straighten Up and Fly Right, You're Not So Good, Tempted, When She Loved Me, Sand Down My Pants, Star Wars, Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me, Yes Sir, That's My Baby, Mission Impossible Theme, Summertime, Listen to the Music Vasari Singers : Deep Purple - Close Harmony Arrangements This selection of close harmony arrangements offers several well-known items by composers as diverse as Kern, Gershwin and Mancini, but also includes some newer works, including a Vasari commission from Bob Chilcott called "Dances in the Streets" and "Birthday Madrigals" by John Rutter. This fine recording includes many arrangements by Ward Swingle with whom the ensemble has often worked with. Songlist: Birthday Madrigals, Lullaby Of Birdland, A Nightengale Sang In Berkeley Square, Dances In The Street, Moon River, Autumn Leaves, Deep Purple, Calico Pie, Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat, Summertime, Love Is Here To Stay, Long Ago And Far Away, All The Things You Are, It was A Lover And His Lass, Weeping Willow, In A Mist, L'Amour De Moi, Country Dances Vocal Point : Grand Slam Since its founding in 1991 by two BYU students, the 8 to 9 men group has gone through many changes of personnel and otherwise (opening twice for Rockapella!). From 1994 to 2001 the group was directed by Jim Anglesey, "Slam" represents his final effort with VP before moving on professionally. Jim's love was watching the group grow as goodwill ambassadors for BYU, the LDS Church, and for a cappella singing, routinely going to schools to teach vocal workshops wherever they'd go, for instance. 13 spirited (sometimes even manic), funny, amazing songs: some favorites: Weird Al Yankovic's painful "Since You've Been Gone/One More Minute," "Breakfast at Denny's," a spot-on parody of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (and what the title is referring to, get it?) "Pennies from Heaven," "I'll Be," "Love One Another," "The Cup of Life," a bluesy "Summertime," and the inspirational "In The First Light." Excellent, and recommended! Songlist: A Pedir Su Mano, Since You've Been Gone / One More Minute, Pennies from Heaven, In My Dreams, Sparkle / Jack's Heroes, Breakfast at Dennny's, Breakfast at Dennny's, Bach's Air on a G String, I'll Be, Love One Another, Cup of Life, She Loves You, Summertime, In the First Light Yale Red, Hot & Blue : Yeah... You Heard Me Founded in 1977, Redhot and Blue is Yale's oldest coed a cappella group. The youthful 18-voice group has dazzled audiences from the White House to the embassies of Prague, onboard the QE II and onstage at Carnegie Hall. Fresh twists on jazz classics, Broadway showstoppers, and toe-tapping favorites of all genres fuel their entertaining and passionate performances. Sophisticated jazz standards and Broadway showtunes form the core of Redhot's repertoire, though they also sing a variety of more contemporary hits. Recipients of many CARA awards, "Yeah..." is the group's 5th CD. 19 songs, some favorites: the classic "42nd Street," Gershwin's "A Foggy Day" and "Summertime," "Fever," Mel Brooks' "When You've Got It, Flaunt It," "Scotch and Soda," Laura Nyro's "Sweet Blindness," Cole Porter's "Red, Hot and Blue," and "A Man Come Into Egypt," from the group's 25th Anniversary concert. All arrangements are by Rh&B alumni. Good stuff, spirited and energetic collegiate a cappella! Songlist: Swingende Koormuziek 42nd Street, A Foggy Day (In London Town), I Can't get Started, Fever, Almost Like Being In Love, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, When You've Got It, Flaunt It, Scotch and Soda, Summertime, I Get A Kick Out of You, Red, Hot and Blue, God Bless the Child, Loverman, Sweet Blindness, All the Things You Are, Second Hand Rose, Night In Tunisia, A Man Come Into Egypt, When You Are Old Chaka Khan : Great Women Singers of the 20th Century Chaka Khan has been singing for 35 years. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning singer began her career in the early 1970s with the pre-imminent funk group Rufus. A beautiful and dynamic vocalist, Chaka was raised on Chicago's South Side. She began her career as a solo artist interestingly, singing jazz. Her fame however, came with contemporary solo funk hits like "I Feel For You" and the classic "I'm Every Woman," which she successfully recorded 10 years before Whitney Houston's cover version. This 1992 live performance at New York's famed jazz club The Blue Note, finds Chaka in the musical environment in which she has always felt most creative. In great voice and surrounded by five talented jazzmen, she performs a rare catalog of songs closely associated wit jazz. Several of which cannot be found on her recordings. She sings the Ellington/Strayhorn "Take The 'A' Train," Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine," plus "Summertime" and "I Loves You Porgy" from Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess. Songlist: Intro: Them There Eyes, I Wish You Love, I Loves You Porgy, High Wire, The Aerialist, My Funny Valentine, Carrie, Summertime, Alfie, All of Me |

Challenging harmonies and rhythmic passages have helped make this vocal jazz setting of the Gershwin standard a favorite. Now available exclusively from Alfred Music.
Arranger: Derek Fawcett | Composer: George Gershwin | Lyricist: Ira Gershwin | Musical: Porgy and Bess
One of the most treasured songs of all time, Gershwin's highly evocative writing mixes elements of jazz with artsong to create a masterwork of the 20th century. This tasteful choral setting weaves the melody through different voices with wordless choral textures, forming a rich backdrop of sound. Starting rubato, a full dynamic range and a dramatic piano accompaniment add to the emotion.
Arranger: Mac Huff | Composer: George Gershwin | Lyricist: Ira Gershwin | Musical: Porgy and Bess
This classic American song from Porgy and Bess deserves only the finest choral treatment, and Mark Hayes has certainly given it that, with a rich, lush setting. The piano accompaniment carries the voices on a dramatic journey appropriate to the nature of the piece. A song that every singer should know and will love.
Arranger: Mark Hayes | Composer: George Gershwin | Lyricist: Ira Gershwin | Musical: Porgy and Bess
Unlike the original ballad heard in the opera Porgy and Bess and sung by a high soprano, here is an easy swing rendition and placed in a key that is comfortable for developing voices. The section with a written out scat solo can be easily repeated for those choirs learning to improvise.
Arranger: Roger Emerson | Composer: Ira Gershwin | Musical: Porgy & Bess
This Gershwinae classic from Porgy and Bess truly comes to life in this exceptional new choral arrangement by Russell Robinson. While it is not without its challenges, this Broadway concert piece is well worth the effort to prepare.
Arranger: Russell Robinson | Composer: Dorothy Heyward | Lyricist: Ira Gershwin | Musical: Porgy and Bess
