Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem in 1933 and recorded it that year, and in the same year it was sung in London by Elisabeth Welch and recorded by Frances Langford. Also 1933, for the first time in history the entire floor revue from Harlem's Cotton Club went on tour, playing theatres in principal cities. The revue was originally called The Cotton Club Parade of 1933 but for the road tour it was changed to the Stormy Weather Revue and as the name implies, the show contained the hit song "Stormy Weather" which was sung by Adelaide Hall.
The song has since been performed by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Clodagh Rodgers, and Reigning Sound and most famously by Lena Horne and Billie Holiday. Leo Reisman's orchestra version had the biggest hit on records (with Arlen himself as vocalist), although Ethel Waters's recorded version also sold well.[citation needed] "Stormy Weather" was featured in the 1943 movie of the same name.
The song tells of disappointment, as the lyrics, "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky", show someone pining for her man to return. The weather is a metaphor for the feelings of the singer: "stormy weather since my man and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time."
The original handwritten lyrics, along with a painting by Ted Koehler, were featured on the (US) Antiques Roadshow on January 24, 2011, where they were appraised for between $50,000 and $100,000. The lyrics show a number of crossings out and corrections.[2]
Ethel Waters's recording of the song in 1933 was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and the Library of Congress honored the song by adding it to the National Recording Registry in 2004. Also in 2004, Horne's version finished at number 30 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.

They are one of those groups who have serious careers and have had to put aside the early musical training each member had while growing up. They found one another in 1985 and the music just wouldn't be denied. They've performed with the Persuasions, Chuck Berry, The Drifters, Stevie Wonder and many more. We'll not pay attention to the numerous Presidential performances but will mentioned that they were picked by Gen. Colin Powell out of the hundreds of offers to perform at his retirement. They are great singers. There is a joyous over the top feeling to the music of these men who generally use their performances to inspire young people in their schools and neighborhoods. Let us tell you, if they weren't such devoted public servants we'd advise them to quit their day jobs in a second! Songlist: Sh-Boom, Oh What A Night, Run Red Run, Heart & Soul, Stormy Weather, Can I, Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go, For Your Precious Love, Duke Of Earl, Buffalo Soldier, False Alarm, I'm On The Outside (Looking In), Never Let Me Go, Little Darlin, Island Of Love, At My Front Door Friendly Advice : For The Heart Tenor Dan, Lead Wes, Baritone Bill and Bass Forrest bring a combination of over 150 years of Barbershop Singing to their quartet, 2003 Evergreen District Champions. What is clear on these 13 tunes, however, is the group's love of singing and entertaining people. Some of our favorites are here, "Allegheny Moon," "In The Still of the Night," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Stormy Weather," "That's An Irish Lullaby," "Easy Street," "Here's that Rainy Day," "Creole Cutie" and "Time After Time." Rich, smooth harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, ringing, effortless chords - these are what we've always loved about Barbershop! Songlist: Allegheny Moon, Nevertheless, In The Still Of The Night, It's Only A Paper Moon, Stormy Weather, What'll I Do, Don't Blame Me, Where Is Love?, That's An Irish Lullaby, Easy Street, Here's That Rainy Day, Creole Cutie, Time After Time Frommermann : Music of the Comedian Harmonists he Dutch group Frommermann is named after Harry Frommermann, who in 1927 founded the Comedian Harmonists. This German ensemble, comprised of five singers and a pianist, was in the late twenties and early thirties of the last century a huge sensation. The Comedian Harmonists were namely renowned for their broad variety of vocal styles and the fine sense of comedy with which they performed close harmony music. Within a short period they became international celebrities with concerts in Europe and the United States. In 1935 the Comedian Harmonists were forced by the Nazis to disband, silencing this ensemble for eternity. Around Christmas 2004, at the request of the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, Marcel Reijans selected a group of fellow singers and a pianist who shared his love for the music of the Comedian Harmonists. With this group of men, each busy with national and international careers, he made Broken Silence, a tribute to the Comedian Harmonists. With this theater program Frommermann broke the silence that was imposed on the Comedian Harmonists and their music gained a voice again in the Netherlands. The three concerts in the 2005 Grachtenfestival were a great success. The numerous positive reactions from the public and press lead immediately to an invitation to perform at the annual Koninginneconcert (Queens Concert) at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. This concert, which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, the royal family and many esteemed guests, was also received with much acclaim. The NPS (Netherlands Public Broadcasting Service) made a documentary and registration of the concert, which was broadcasted nationwide on Koninginnedag (Queens Day) 2006 Songlist: Veronika, Der Lenz Ist Da, Eine Kleine Fruhlingsweise, Overture To Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, Mein Kleiner Gruner Kaktus, Stormy Weather, Ali Baba, In Einem Kuhlen Grunde, Wenn Ich Vergnugt Bin, Wir Sind von Kopf Bis Fub Auf Liebe Eingestellt, Schone Isabella Aus Kastilien, Morgen Mub Ich Fort von Hier, Wochenend Und Sonnenschein, Night and Day, When Yumba Plays the Rhumba On the Tuba, Kannst Du Pfeifen Johanna?, Guter Mond Du Gehst So Stille, Holzhackerlied, Gitarren Spielt Auf, Leb' Wohl, Gute Reise Hudson Shad : Spawn Song Hudson Shad is an American group that was inspired by the German Comedian Harmonists, who were formed in Berlin, 1927. The First World War over, the cabaret tradition flourishes and the city is a locus of developing talent. The Comedian Harmonists performs until 1935, when, due to persecution of the three Jewish members under the Nazi Party, they are forced to disband. Hudson Shad's poignant "Liebeslied," sung in German, is all that much more evocative, its sentiment in horrible contrast to the terrible events to follow. The traditional "Callin' My Children Home" showcases the group's close harmonies and tight blend, "My Little Green Cactus" is a naughty paean to something other than succulents, if we know anything at all! Songlist: Wie War's Mal Mit Lissaben?, Callin' My Children Home, My Little Green Cactus, Stormy Weather, Whispering, Liebesleid, Night and Day, Camp Meeting, Creole Love Call, Baby, Wedding Of The Painted Doll, Tea For Two, A Little Spring Melody, Uncle Bumba, Auf Wiederseh'n Hudson Shad : Hooked Again The canon of the Comedian Harmonists is recreated by the American Hudson Shad, who on this entertaining and historically compelling CD sing both in English and German, to capture the essence of their inspiration. Accompanied by piano, the Harmonists sound is one part jazz and one part music hall, as on Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing," where vocal bass and piano pump out a furious twenties rhythm, augmented by scat and and a vigorous horn solo. "Whistle While You Work" is a masterpiece of vocal orchestration, not to mention whistling, and when the Shad assume the personas of the Dwarfs-well, you just have to buy this record to hear it! The traditional "Die Dorfmusik" has a racuous yodeling motif over a swaying 3/4. Songlist: Wochenend Und Sonnenschein, (Happy Days Are Here Again), Blue River, Mein Kleiner Gruner Kaktus, Four Leaf Clover, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Veronika, Der Lenz Ist Da, Liebesleid, Whistle While You Work, I Had A Dream, Die Dorfmusik, Stormy Weather, Georgia, Guitarren Spielt Auf, Standchen, Gloriana, Der Alte Cowboy (The Last Round-up) King's Singers : A Tribute To The Comedian Harmonists How appropriate that the King's Singers would pay tribute to the seminal pre-world War II German group who had such an influence on the development of a cappella. The Harmonists, who were ultimately forced to disband by the Nazi government, were a six-member ensemble (five voices and a pianist) who were at the vanguard of the cabaret vogue of pre-war Berlin. Their set comprised jazz standards, German lied, classical pieces and a hearty portion of silliness ("My Little Green Cactus," "Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier." ). The British King's Singers have lovingly selected sixteen songs from the Harmonists' repetoire, which they in turn arranged for themselves, resulting in a happy marriage of both. "Overture from 'Il Barbiere Di Siviglia'" is a clue to the inspiration of the Swingle Singers; "Tea for Two" is nothing like the original, but is slowed to ballad tempo, with a host of jazzy chord voicings-a sublime rendition! Songlist: Veronika, der Lenz its da, Liebling, Mein Herz Lsst Dich Grossen, Night and Day, Mein Kleiner Groner Kaktus, Creole Love Call, Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier, Stormy Weather, Das ist die Liebe der Matrosen, Ouvet re zu/Overture from the Barber of Seville, Wenn der Wind Weht Uber das Meer, Flight of the Bumblebee, The Donkey Serenade, Gitarren Spielt Auf, Tea For Two, Du armes girl vom Chor, Wochenhund und Sonnenschein Masterpiece : Nice and Easy Rob, Patrick, Alan and Brett have all enjoyed great success with other Barbershop groups. Tenor Rob Menaker graduated from the UCLA Men's Glee Club to a number of groups, culminating in a 1996 International Championship with Nightlife. He also won 6 chorus championships with The Masters of Harmony. Lead Patrick Haedtler sang with 2007 International Chorus Champs The Westminster Chorus, and with 2009 International semifinalists The Crush. Baritone Alan Gordon also sang with the Masters, which led to his joining Gotcha!, 2004 Quartet Champions. Bass Brett Littlefield anchored Nightlife's 1996 Championship with Rob, and sang with the Masters for 20 years. Brett and Rob are among the few men who have won a Barbershop Quartet and Chorus Championship on the same day! Now singing together as Masterpiece, the new group attracted a lot of attention by placing fourth at this year's Portland Convention, and they celebrated by releasing their debut album, "Nice & Easy." Every one of these 12 songs, including favorites "Nice & Easy," Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Hi-De-Ho," "Deed I Do," "Stormy Weather," "San Fernando Valley," "Tennessee Waltz," "Sweet Pea," "Joyfully I'll Travel On" and "At the Crossroads;" is masterful, if you will--funny, poignant, nostalgic, powerful and filled with unbelievable ringing chords and harmonies. It adds up to great entertainment-don't miss this one! Songlist: Bang Goes the Drum, Nice & Easy, Deed I Do, The Heather on the Hill, Stormy Weather, Hi-De-Ho, San Ferdando Valley, Tennessee Waltz, Where've You Been?, Sweet Pea, Joyfully I'll Carry On, At The Crossroads OC Times : Let's Fly Tenor Shawn York, lead Sean Devine (of the Alley Cats), baritone Patrick Claypool and bass Corey Hunt, all talented young men from Orange County, CA, proved with their 2nd place medal at the recent SPEBSQSA competitions in Denver that a far-from-quiet young revolution is happening in the Barbershop world. The quartet, also members of Chorus Gold medal-winners (and youngest-ever choral entrants) Westminster Chorus, rose from 46th place to 18th in 2004, to 5th place in 2005, and in 2007 second only to supergroup Max Q. "Let's Fly" is 15 innovatively-arranged (by group arranger Aaron Dale), flawlessly performed winners, from OC standards "Good Luck Charm," "Put Your Head On My Shoulder," "Honey (Open That Door)/Hey Good Lookin' Medley," "Love Me," and "Come Fly with Me," to new winners "Teddy Bear," "Drivin' Me Crazy," "So Much in Love," a brilliant "Stormy Weather," "Anytime at All," "You're 16, You're Beautiful, and You're Mine" and the last cut, "Save the Last Dance For Me/Sway Medley," this collection impresses at every turn. Audiences call them "fresh," "cutting edge," "pushing the envelope"-but listen to "Let's Fly" for yourself, hear the fast-rising future of Barbershop, and come up with your own adjectives! Songlist: Good Luck Charm, Teddy Bear, Love Me, Drivin' Me Crazy, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident), Honey (Open That Door) / Hey Good Lookin' Medley, Grow Old With You, So Much In Love, Stormy Weather, Come Fly With Me, Anytime At All, You're 16, You're Beautiful, and You're Mine, What a Wonderful World, Save The Last Dance For Me / Sway Medley Orphei Drangar : Caprices with OD Vol 3 Not only is Orphei Drangar one of the oldest and best men's choirs in the world, but it is a true gathering of individualists, almost all of whom have amde of will make their mark in professions other than music. Given this urge to express themselves as individuals, their popular pre-CHristmas concerts, known locally as "caprices," are not just a collective letting down of hair," but a much-appreciated opportunity for displaying all sorts of individual talents not usually required of choristers -- whether this be writing musical sketches, singing in some hitherto undiscovered register, representing half of a theatrical horse and etceteras. Add to this Eric Ericson, the world's greatest choral conductor -- who looked after Orphei Drangar for forty years because he enjoyed them so much -- and the mixture is potent, not to say explosive. Like all the greatest musicians Eric Ericson has that well-developed sense of humor that comes from recognizing that one has been entrusted with a very rare gift. Together, Eric Ericson and Orphei Drangar let their hair down in grand style. Indeed they elevate the very concept of "letting one's hair down" into something like an art form. Songlist: Hor I Orphei Drangar / Kalinka, Pa faltet stod en liten bjork, Balladen om Eugen Cork, Livet ar ett helvete, Halsa dom dar hemma, Fragancia, Julgranen, Nu har jag fatt den jag vill ha, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Stormy Weather, True Love, Norgehistoria, Engelska flottan, Kivikspolka, Poor Lonesome Cowboy, Feeling Too Good Blues, Hark, Ye Sons if Orpheus, Maybe It«s Because I'm a Londoner, Jag ser pa dina ogon / 5000 man, Viljasangen, Lat oss liksom svalorna, Operetten ar dod Various Artists : Sweetest Harmony Mandatory for fans of vintage vocal jazz, this delightful collection also documents the musical evolution of the genre with great groups such as the Mills Bros., Andrews Sisters and Dandridge Sisters, as well as many less famous but still important ensembles. "Caravan," "Tuxedo Junction," " Java Jive" and "Stormy Weather" are included, but it's equally a treat to hear "That's My Weakness Now," (The Rhythm Boys, who had Bing Crosby as a member) or the silly humor of "The Girl In the Little Green Hat." All tracks are accompanied. Songlist: Breezin' Along With The Breeze, The Whisper Song, Too Busy!, Dear, On A Night Like This, That's My Weakness Now, The Girl In The Green Hat, At The Baby Parade, Sweet Jennie Lee!, Dinah, Oh! Features a Puerling arrangement of "Stardust" and a beautiful "Where is Love." Some cuts include jazz band accompaniment; others include quartet cameos (Dealer's Choice, Acoustix) and two include a female soloist. Songlist: No Arms Can Ever Hold You (Like These Arms Of Mine), My Funny Valentine, Graduation Day/ It's A Blue World Medley, Stormy Weather, You'll Never Know, Where Is Love?, As Time Goes By, The Masquerade Is Over, Stardust, Mack The Knife, I'll Be Seeing You Women's Chorus of Dallas : In The Mood On April 5, 1998 The Women's Chorus of Dallas performed the music from this CD in Dallas; exactly 100 women on stage in authentic 1940s attire. The artistic director, and the only man at TWCD rehearsals, is Dr. Tim Selig. Their principal accompanist and arranger is Anne Albritton, whose piano graces all the songs. There are 17 great songs from the 40s here, but actually many more; "Train Medley," for instance, includes "Take the A Train," "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," and "Choo-Choo Ch'Boogie." There's a wonderful booklet included with photos and dedications and memories. The audience, many of whom got through the 40s with the help of this wonderful music, loved it, and so will you!
