According to King, the title is derived and was inspired by a spiritual composition by Sam Cooke called "Stand by Me Father" (although Mike Stoller has stated differently). This spiritual was sung by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead. The third line of the second verse of "Stand by Me" derives from Psalms 46:2c. There have been over 400 recorded versions of the song performed by many artists. It has been featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 film Stand by Me. A music video was also released to promote the film.
In 2012, it was estimated that the song's royalties had topped £17 million, making it the sixth highest earning song as of that time. 50% of the royalties were paid to King.
In 2015, King's original version was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", just under five weeks before his death. Later in the year the 2015 line up of the Drifters recorded it in tribute to him.

Then you'll just have to swoon to one of the sweetest versions of 'Only You' which you will ever hear. Thank goodness they launch into a upbeat 'Blue Moon' or you would end up in a emotional puddle on the floor! If you ever were touched by the romantic songs of the fifties and sixties (and a sound alike or two from the seventies), this recording is for you. Frankly, we've never heard a better recording of era's music. The voices are beautiful, the slides into falsetto breaks is seamless, and the arrangements keep true to the originals while filling out the instrumental parts with vocals. The Alley Cats have presented all of the greatest songs of an era, 'Silhouettes,' 'Twilight Time,' 'Earth Angel,' 'Stand By Me,' and more, sixteen cuts in all. The tempos and arrangements vary so you never become complacent and let a tune slide by out of predictability, but rather have to pay attention to each sweet riff. We gush, we enthuse, and we have only this to add, 'yip yip yip yip, mum mum mum mum, get a job!' With your first paycheck be sure to get the Alley Cats, 'Strike 32.' They've been touring extensively and recording, sharpening their vocal chops and live show, which we get a nice taste of on "One Stop Doo-Wop"-ten of the 12 cuts were recorded live in the Majestic Theater in Madison, WI, and "I Feel Good" was recorded in group member Nate Mendl's dining room! Favorites are "OREO/Rockin' Robin," when we get to hear the famous Oreo song that brought the group together, "Duke of Earl," CCR's "Proud Mary," the bubblegum hit "Hooked on a Feelin'," the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk," "Up On The Roof," The Righteous Bros.' Christmas concerts around Alberta have been very successful, and a sold-out concert in March celebrated the release of "Chick Us Out!," their debut CD. 10 songs, with some nice Canadian folk tunes like "Feller from Fortune," "The Morning Dew," "She's Like the Swallow," and the silly, sexy "The Log Driver's Waltz;" vintage rock classics like "Under the Boardwalk," "Lollipop" and B.E. King's "Stand By Me," the Swing anthem "Mr. Sandman," and, incongruously, the Eurythmics' hit, "Sweet Dreams." The Chickadivas have a fresh, innocent sound and obviously love what they're doing. "Chick Us Out" marks a promising beginning for one of Canada's best new a cappella groups! Songlist: Under the Boardwalk, Feller From Fortune, The Morning Dw, Sweet Dreams, Mr Sandman, Hard Times, Stand By Me, She's Like The Swallow, Lollipop, The Log Driver's Waltz, Frequent Listener Reward Track Coats : The Boys Are Back One of the Pacific Northwest's best vocal harmony quartet, in our opinion, 1994 Harmony Sweeps winners The Coats are back with their eighth CD, an energetic, powerful collection of original materials and freshly-arranged covers. Doug Wisness, baritone, Jamie Dieveney, tenor II, Kerry Dahlen, bass and Keith Anderson, tenor I, start us off with the title tune, a driving, deep-bassed rhythmic toe-tapper. Then come a couple of originals by Dieveney, Dahlen and producer Bill Gibson, "She's Got That Thing" and "Walk Away." Other originals by them, "Let's Be Crazy," "Running After Time," "Slow Ride" and "Together Through It All" are interspersed with marvelous covers of Michael Jackson's "Shake Your Body," John Fogerty's "Down On The Corner," and the classic tunes "She Blinded Me With Science," "Stand By Me" and "Sunglasses At Night." Besides being well-chosen and beautifully arranged (by Dieveney and Gibson), and absolutely nailed by the group, these covers show that the Coats' vocal pyrotechnics are right up there with such performers as Michael Jackson when he recorded "Thriller." This is one of the strongest contemporary CDs of the year. The Coats should be stars, they know it, their fans know it, and hopefully "The Boys" will let a whole lot more people know it! Songlist: The Boys Are Back, She's Got That Thing, Walk Away, Shake Your Body, Let's Be Crazy, She Blinded Me With Science, Running After Time, Down on the Corner, Stand By Me, Sunglasses At Night, Slow Ride, Together Through It All Ernie Haase & Signature Sound : Here We Are Again A diverse new collection of original songs and gospel classics from these Gaither Homecoming favorites arranged for piano/vocal with TTBB vocal parts Songlist: Any Other Man, Every Time, Here We Are Again, I Believe, I've Been Here Before, Love Carried the Cross, Singing in the Midnight Hour, Sometimes I Wonder, Stand by Me, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Thankful to You, You Are Welcome Here Fairfield Four : Best Of 1946 - 1953 This collection represents selected tracks from their singles released from the start of their recording career in 1946 through to 1953, when there was a significant change in the group's line up with the departure of Rev. Sam McCarary. This is a fine showcase for their distinctive style and represents some of the best and most popular gospel music of that era, which was a heyday for the genre, as with other groups the gospel groups paved the way for the doo wop boom of the 50's. This is classic stuff! Songlist: Who Stole My Old Shoes, Better Leave That Liar Alone, Don't You Want to Join That Number, Where Shall I Go, Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around, Standing in the Safety Zone, When I Get Up in Heaven, Amazing Grace, Canaan Land, I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About, You've Got to Move, Just One Moment in God's Kingdom, Dig a Little Deeper in God's Love, Just a Little Talk with Jesus, Lift Him Up, Three of Level, Jesus Met the Woman at the Well, Ezekiel, Roll All Burdens Away, Saviour Don't Pass Me By, In the Wilderness, Let Me Tell You About Jesus, In the Upper Room, I'll Tell the World, Don't Drive Your Children Away, Does Jesus Care, Nobody to Depend On, No Room at the Inn, On My Journey Now, Love Is Like a River, and more Flying Pickets : Vox Pop The Pickets have an excellent ear for pop classics and translate them impeccably in the a cappella style, imparting their own unique spin. While some the arrangements remain on the whole true to the original versions, when the Pickets innovate, as they do on Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," the results are even more impressive. "Southern Man" is transformed into a Jamaican reggae number; the only recognizable part is the refrain. The group has a particular knack for writing interesting countermelodies, that diverge and then resolve in unexpected ways. Their vocal approach is relaxed, never strained; the production, smooth and refined. Few groups handle contemporary material as well. Songlist: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Stand by Me, Les Yeux Revolver, Love Is All Around, Stop, Men And Women, No More I Love You's, Stupid Things, Time After Time, Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon, Southern Man, If I Could Fly, Eternal Flame, Dream a Little Dream, The Look in Her Eyes Harbor Lights : Almost Acappella When we want to hear authentic Doo Wop, we think of Indiana. That's right, Indiana-4-man, 1-woman Harbor Lights is the real deal, with the genuine New York Doo Wop sound. On "Almost" they nail Doo Wop standards like "Come Go With Me," "Little Star," "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." They add a female lead to Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," and reinterpret pop hits like the Temptations' "Just My Imagination" and Peter & Gordon's "I Go To Pieces" becomes an a cappella classic. Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool" is a sweet, nostalgic winner, as is Richie Valens' "Donna." Some accompaniment. "Almost" is the soul of East Coast Doo Wop from America's heartland! Songlist: Come Go With Me, Poor Little Fool, Gee Whiz, Little Star, Stand By Me, Pretty Little Angel Eyes, Just My Imagination, I Go To Pieces, Donna, The Lion Sleeps Tonight Home Free : As Seen On TV Latest release from the a cappella country music stars. Songlist: Cruise, Life Is A Highway, Ring Of Fire, Oh, Pretty Woman, I'm Alright, Colder Weather, I Want Crazy, Stand By Me, Bye Bye Bye, Listen To The Music Jay, Ray and Gee : A Cappella New Orleans New Orleans is home to some of the best music around, so finding this CD of A'capella Doo Wop New Orleans style was simply a treat. The songs are familiar favorites of traditional, motown, funk, calypso and childhood past that will keep you singing along with Jay-Ray and all of his friends. Fresh from the studio and without any technical manipulations to the recording, A'capella New Orleans is raw and unadulterated fun. When you pop this CD into the stereo, have no expectations; just enjoy the songs and the pleasure that went into singing them. Songlist: Day-O (Banana Boat Song), The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Father Abraham, Under the Boardwalk, I Feel Good, Chain Gang, Spinning Around, It's Alright, My Girl, Sitting In the Park, Yesterday, Stand By Me, It's Gonna Rain, Blessed Quietness, I've Been Changed Masters of Harmony : The Dream is Carried On What a treat! Two gold-medal winning choruses on one CD. As both choruses are based in the LA area they decided to join up and record a CD together so we have The Masters of Harmony and the Westminster Chorus taking turns singing some great barbershop music. These sixteen tracks show exactly why these are two of the top male choruses of the day with a powerful yet refined sound that clearly demonstrate the talent of the singers and the respective directors. The wide variety of songs are bound to please all. Songlist: Get Happy, Precious Lord, Stand By Me, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Stars and Stripes Forever, Hallelujah, No More Sorrow, Mary, Did You Know?, Song Of America, Great Day, For Good, Lux Arumque, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Go Down Moses, Ave Maria, The Dream Is Carried On Masters of Harmony : Portrait "Portrait" is a strong new collection from the dynamic, 7-time BHS International Chorus champions Masters of Harmony. 15 finely-crafted tunes including some of our favorites "Go Down Moses, "I Will Go Sailing No More," "Good Luck Charm" and "Sold" (sung with 2008 BHS Quartet champs OC Times), "Stand By Me," "Nice 'N Easy" (sung with 2008 Far Western District Quartet champs Masterpiece, "Yona From Arizona," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and "Portrait of My Love Medley." The Masters, directed by Michigan Jake member Mark Hale, has a wonderful, complex sound that adds new dimensions to these classic songs. Enjoy one of Barbershop's great champion choruses's. Songlist: Go Down Moses, I Will Go Sailing No More, Blues in the Night, Roll On, Mississippi, Good Luck Charm, For Good, Stand By Me, Bach Fugue in D Minor, Nice 'N' Easy, Wonderful One, Yona From Arizona, Time After Time, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Sold, Portrait of My Love Medley Nexus Quartet : Nexus This Denver-based quartet has roots in the Denver A Cappella Project, and includes tenor George (of 1982 Gold Medal-winners Classic Collection), his son Mike, baritone, bass Mark and lead Ryan. At the 2007 Barbershop Harmony Society contest in Denver, Following the release of this, their debut recording, NeXus moved up from 27th place to 19th place in the elite top 20 in only their 3rd year of competition. We particularly appreciated the songlist in the liner notes, that included some of the group's influences: "Just A Gigolo," inspired by Classic Collection, "The Dock of the Bay" and "Stand By Me," inspired by Rockapella, and "Don't Worry Be Happy," inspired by the Blenders. Other favorites are "Orange Colored Sky," "Gospel Medley," a bluesy "Summertime," "Under the Boardwalk," and "Mean to Me." Great stuff from this popular, fast-rising, veteran quartet! Songlist: Love Is Just Around The Corner, Just a Gigolo, The Dock Of The Bay, Fit As A Fiddle, If I Had You, Orange Colored Sky, These Foolish Things, Stand By Me, Gospel Medley, Summertime, Under the Boardwalk, Mean To Me, Don't Worry Be Happy The Choral Project : Tell The World Founded in 1996 by acclaimed Artistic Director and Conductor Daniel Hughes, the 43-strong, San Francisco Bay Area-based Choral Project has won numerous awards in California and internationally, released seven excellent albums and received rave reviews. Their vision is "To heal our world through music and words;" their mission "to connect one another through choral theater, education and musical excellence." "Tell the World" has 17 live cuts, some of them accompanied by keyboards, piano, bass, drums and percussion. Particularly fine are the a cappella Spiritual "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," "Deep River," "My God is Good/Angels of the Earth" medley, the a cappella Spirituals "I Can Tell the World" and "On the Battlefield for My Lord" and "All My Trials;" "Witness," "Stand By Me," "Wade in de Water," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Worthy to Be Praised." "Tell the World" is everything we were hoping to hear, powerful, spirited, inspirational music from one of our favorite ensembles, The Choral Project! Songlist: Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Blow Ye The Trumpet, 23rd Psalm, Deep River, My God Is Good/Angels Of The Earth, I Can Tell The World, On The Battlefield For My Lord, All My Trials, My Soul's Been Anchored, Witness, Ain'-a That Good News, Stand By Me, We Let It Be, Wade In De Water, God Is All There Is, The Battle Of Jericho, Worthy To Be Praised The Fault Line : The Fault Line Adam, Justin, Jeff and Matt, all former members of the nationally known a cappella group Sons of Pitches, invited a fifth man, Josh, to join them in their high-energy bid for national stardom. Listen to the crazed, manic cover of Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" and get a taste of the startling, refreshing power and energy of New York-based The Fault Line, qualities we almost never hear in an a cappella recording. This tune appropriately segues into a juicy live rendition of Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," which created a generation of British rockers before anyone in America took notice. Two other favorites, and live cuts, are a boogying arrangement of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me, and a crazed cover of Fall Out Boy's "Dance Dance." Powerful, driving, fun stuff throughout - a strong, beautifully arranged 7-song debut collection from these five talented guys! Songlist: Buried Myself Alive, Maniac, True, Are You Gonna Be My Girl?, Rock Around The Clock, Stand By Me, Dance Dance Toxic Audio : Chemistry 2000 Harmony Sweeps Champions, (and hilarious hosts of the 2001 Finals), the third CD of the 3 men and 2 women who are Toxic Audio has been much anticipated here, and we are happy to report that "Chemistry" is a smash! The CD begins with a wonderfully wacky "She Blinded Me With Science," the Doobie Bros' hit "Listen to the Music," "Hush" with a really cool vocal "bass" solo, "Words," with a very cool "rap" sequence, a sneakily funny parody, "God Must Have Spent A Little Less Time On You," with the line, "you're so ugly, when you were born, instead of slapping you, they slapped your mom," "Paperback Writer," Throat Culture's "I want a head like the heads you see on Easter Island, I want to stare at the seaside and do nothing." Next is "Stand By Me," a jazzy "Autumn Leaves," first in French and then upbeat in English, an ultra funky "Why Don't We Do It in the Road," a Michael Jackson song, and the disco hit, "Turn the Beat Around, which vocally segues into the drum solo from the surfer hit, "Wipeout." "Chemistry" is a winner and highly recommended! Songlist: Blinded Me With Science, Listen to the Music, Voices Carry, Putting Words Into My Mouth, God Must've Spent a Little Less Time on You, Paperback Writer, Easter Island, Stand By Me, Autumn Leaves, Do It in the Road, Tunnel Vision, Turn the Beat Around Toxic Audio : Word Of Mouth First launching its quirky show at the 1998 Orlando International Fringe Festival, where they caught the attention of Disney executives who hired them as featured performers at Disney/MGM Studios, Toxic Audio began making major waves in the a cappella world in 2000 with a stunning win at the Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael, CA. Their CD "Chemistry" was named 2003 CASA' Album of the Year. After national TV appearances with Ed McMahon and Wayne Brady, the group won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for "Unique Theatrical Experience for their Off-Broadway Show in New York's John Houseman Theatre. "Word of Mouth" is essentially a "Best of Toxic Audio 1998-2004" CD, which features tracks from their previous releases in addition to "Chemistry," "Captive Audience," and "Toxic Audio," as well as 6 new tracks recorded exclusively for "Word." 13 songs, and a list of favorites would have to include a pair of amazing originals written by group members Jeremy and Shalisa, "Caffeine" and "Putting Words in My Mouth," who also sing lead on them; a funky, salsa-flavored "(Put the Lime in the) Coconut;" an ethereal, soaring arrangement of "Stand By Me," a pair of Lennon/McCartney winners, "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and "All I've Got to Do," one of the best live covers of "Route 66" we've ever heard, the group's live concert favorite "Turn the Beat Around," a bluesy-jazzy "If I Only Had A Brain" with a sweet, meandering lead by Paul; and a boogying "You Can't Stop The Beat" from the Broadway musical "Hairspray." One of the most dynamic live shows we've seen, at the Sweeps and at the A Cappella Summit, Toxic Audio makes equally wonderful CDs, and this is their best yet, "Word!" Songlist: Caffeine, (Put The Lime In The) Coconut, Splanky, Bring Me To Life, Stand By Me, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, All I Gotta Do, Route 66, Putting Words In My Mouth, Turn The Beat Around, Voices Carry, If I Only Had A Brain, You Can't Stop The Beat Various Artists : Starlight Serenade Vol. XI Volume 11 of a doo-wop retrospective series on Starlight Discs. 20 cuts on this CD, The Jesters, BQE, The Ovations, A Moment's Pleasure, New Emage, The Four Sevilles and Neighbor's Complaint.
