Their trademark voicings made the group a popular favorite; they recorded over twenty albums for Capitol alone! Their likeable onstage persona can be heard on "Once In Love With Amy," a novelty number that sounds like singer Ross Barbour is on helium. "Somebody Loves Me" and "Taps Miller" are swung at a speed that is vivace going on dangerous-"Taps" features a challenging scat performance, while "Somebody Loves Me" has a rubato turn of phrase that is a clever device.

Called "the man who taught America how to sing" Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians were a fixture on radio in the '40's and '50's and these 23 songs were recorded in 1949 and 1950 when at the height of their popularity. The group, including the instrumentalists, was over 50 members strong and sing beautifully some of the classic songs from the era. Sweet Adelines 2012 International Quartet Champions, also known as "Queens of Harmony" Martini is actually an international voices across the border phenomenon, with Bass Shannon Harris and tenor Corinna Garriock hailing from Canada, and lead Michelle Shoemaker and baritone DeAnne Haugen from the United States. The group first got together in 2007 with a different tenor and lead, and placed 8th in the world 2008 in Honolulu. Michelle joined the group in early 2010, and Martini placed 5th in Seattle after just a few months of rehearsal. Then in January 2011, Corinna joined the group, and 6 rehearsals later, created magic in Houston, being crowned Queens! "Shaken, Stirred & Crowned" is a 13-song "best-of" collection that celebrates Martini's remarkable rise. The McGuire Sisters (Phyllis, Dorothy and Christine) got their big break on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Show, where they replaced the Chordettes and remained for six years. They generated many hits throughout the 1950's and well into the next decade, and so popular were they that, as representatives for Coca-Cola, they received the highest fee in advertising history up to that time. These 24 romantic melodies just inspire harmony, and the orchestrations are brilliant as well. "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" uses imitation among the horn and string sections to reinforce the vocal line, while "Them There Eyes" is punctuated by percussion and horn accents and a half-time coda. The three voices, very similar in tone color and generally having a low tessitura in the female range, blend easily, and their vocal style is natural and without artifice. It's wonderful stuff.

Toronto, Canada was the host for the 2013 convention which was also the 75th Anniversary of the event. The home group Toronto Northern Lights won gold, Westminster Chorus took silver and the Alexandria Harmonizers won bronze. Let's look forward to another 75 years.

"Easy Street" is a rare treat, an opportunity to see the Four Freshmen (Bob Flanigan, Ken Albers and the Barbour brothers, Don and Ross) in their prime, in a live (black and white) performance on the Ray Anthony show in 1956! Featured are 21 of the 4F's favorite pop hits: "Day By Day," "You're So Far Above Me," "Charmaine," "Got A Date With an Angel," The Day Isn't Long Enough," "How Do You Like Your Eggs in the Morning," "Someone Like You," "Graduation Day," "There'll Never Be Another You," the title tune, and our personal favorite, "It's a Blue World." The four play their own instruments, or act in little skits, singing "You Stepped Out of a Dream" to a librarian who tries to keep her composure, for instance. It's a corny 1956 variety show, the Four Freshmen are singing with their bright, fresh sound and ringing harmonies, and we've got a front-row seat!"
