"Skylark" is an American popular song with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Hoagy Carmichael, published in 1941. Mercer said that he struggled for a year after he got the music from Carmichael before he could get the lyrics right.[2] Mercer recalled Carmichael initially called him several times about the lyric, but had forgotten about it by the time Mercer finally wrote the lyrics. The yearning expressed in the lyrics is Mercer's longing for Judy Garland, with whom Mercer had an affair. This song is considered a jazz standard. Additionally, the song is believed to have inspired a long-running Buick car of the same name that was produced from 1953 to 1998

John Rutter has written vivid new arrangements of seven well-loved American spirituals for choir, with soloist Melanie and the BBC Concert Orchestra joining with the Cambridge Singers for this world premiere recording. Another notable 'first' is jazz legend George Shearing's captivating new cycle of Shakespeare settings, Songs and Sonnets. Those who associate George Shearing with instrumental jazz (and of course with his immortal Lullaby of Birdland) will be astonished and delighted at the youthful charm and skillful word-setting of this 81-year old master's choral writing. The final touch of sparkle is added by Proms favorite Wayne Marshall's piano, with Malcolm Creese on bass. To complete the album, John Rutter's own Birthday Madrigals - written in 1995 to celebrate George Shearing's 75th birthday - also receives their premiere recording. Songlist: Joshua Fit De Battle Of Jericho, Steel Away, I Got A Robe, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Deep River, When The Saints Go Marching In, Live With Me And Be My Love, When The Daffodils Begen To Peer, It Was A Lover And His Lass, Spring, Who Is Silvia, Fie On Sinful Fantasy, Hey, Ho, The Wind And The Rain, The Heavenly Aeroplane, Lord Of The Dance, It Was A Lover And His Lass, Draw On Sweet Night, Come Live With Me, My True Love Hath My Heart, When Daisies Pied, Skylark Cliftonaires : How Sentimental Can We Be Producer Ronnie Italiano, Clifton Music's "Ronnie I," presents some authentic New Jersey Doo Wop by his Cliftonaires, who consist of two of the finest female singers on today's scene and 4 outstanding veteran male singers. The song selection on the 21 songs pays tribute to the legendary era of classic 1950s R&B Group recordings with bass Jack Scandura's fine arrangements. Some favorites: "How Sentimental Can I Be," "Angel and A Rose," "Blue Moon," "P.S. I Love You," "To Be Loved," "Dream," "Chapel of Dreams," "Skylark," "When I Fall In Love," "Night and Day," "I Found A New Baby," "Wedding Bells" and "I'll Be Seeing You." This is the good stuff! Songlist: How Sentimental Can I Be?, Angel And A Rose, Blue Moon, Don't Say You're Sorry, P.S. I Love You, To Be Loved, Strange Love, Dream, Chapel Of Dreams, Here's That Rainy Day, Skylark, Zoom, You're Everything To Me, When I Fall In Love, Night and Day, I Found A New Baby, This I Swear, Wedding Bells, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, I'll Be Seeing You The Four Freshmen : In Session Brian Eichenberger, Curtis Calderon, Vince Johnson and Bob Ferreira, the "new" Four Freshmen, play their own instruments on this sweet-sounding studio recording, which was produced by The Four Freshmen Society. OK, the album is all accompanied, but the smooth, bright, tight-knit harmonies that, for us, define the best of 50s and 60s Vocal Jazz, are here in spades. 11 well-chosen covers, standards such as Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me," Mercer's moody "Skylark," his lesser-known, bluesy "Early Autumn" and his more upbeat "Something's Gotta Give;" Harold Arlen's "If I Only Had a Brain," "September Song" (with a nice a cappella intro), and the hits just keep on coming with "That Old Feeling" and "You've Changed." The sound that launched dozens of top 40 hits, made millions fall in love while slow dancing, and influenced every male Vocal Jazz quartet that came after the 4Fs is sounding as new, and as fresh, as ever! Songlist: It's All Right With Me, My One And Only Love, Skylark, If Only I Had A Brain, Early Autumn, Something's Gotta Give, How Do You Keep The Music Playing, That Old Feeling, September Song, If I Had You, You've Changed Hi-Lo's : Under Glass / I Presume A spate of Hi-Lo's albums have been recently released on CD, but this may be the most auspicious re-emergence yet: the Hi-lo's first two records, paired up for over an hour's worth of great listening. Though some of the cuts can be found on other recordings, the a cappella "Molly Malone" and "Through The Years" aren't available anywhere else, and the remarkable harmonizations that were Gene Puerling's unique artistry are gloriously displayed in a riot of tonal color. Also, "Georgia On My Mind," and "They Don't Believe Me," from their first 1953 recording session for Trend, are included; the latter was on the previously available "Nice Work If You Can Get It" CD, which has since been discontinued. Anyway, suffice it to say, that among the vocal harmony groups of the 1950's, the Hi-lo's were much imitated, but never duplicated, and their appeal is timeless. Mostly accompanied, with orchestrations by frequent music director Frank Comstock. Songlist: Summertime, The Birth Of The Blues, Skylark, Through The Years, Shadow Waltz, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Chinatown, My Chinatown, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, In The Blue Of The Evening, Molly Malone, You're the Top, Long Ago And Far Away, Rockin' Chair, Stars Fell On Alabama, Nice Work If You Can Get It, I Thought About You, This Is The Night, Too Young For The Blues, Jeepers Creepers, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Shoeless Joe From Hannibal Mo, They Didn't Believe Me, Georgia On My Mind Hi-Lo's : A Musical Thrill A musical thrill indeed! For all their loyal fans over the years, and for those who have never had the chance to savor the buttery harmonies, sweet leads and ringing, hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck-tingling held chords of one of Sweet Adelines' all-time great champions, we would highly recommend "Celebrating High Society." A 2-CD collection of 51 tunes, "Celebrating" leaves none of the good stuff out, including every song on their four best-selling albums! All of our favorites, "Take Me to the Land of Jazz," "Get Happy," "Top Hat Medley," "Jump Shout Boogie," "Tin Roof Boogie," "Java Jive," "In My Life," "Crazy," "Fred Astaire Medley," "Lazy River," "Lullaby of Birdland"... they're all here. Hailing from Indianapolis this very talented quartet amply display on this recording how they took the gold medals with their fine voices and tight harmonies. Their arrangements are unique as they arrange most of the songs themselves and by doing so bring a fresh take on these classic songs. Recommended. Songlist: Is It True What They Say About Dixie?, Spend My Life with You, I Won't Send Roses, Follow Me, It Is Well with My Soul, Change Parts, When She Loved Me, Mills Brothers Medley, The Very Thought of You, Guilty, 'Til I Hear You Sing, Livin' on a Prayer, Come What May, All the Things You Are, Skylark New Tradition Chorus : Sentimental Journey Northbrook, IL's 95-strong NTC, founded in 1982 as a performance and competition chorus and the intention of becoming one of the best men's choruses in the world, reached that goal in 2001, when, after 8 years of second place medals, they won the coveted gold. Director and arranger Jay Giallombardo, who was a charter member of the group and a member of SPEBSQSA since 1968, has made his devotion to musical quality a guiding light for New Tradition since its inception. That smooth, powerful quality is clear on all of "Sentimental's" 13 classic cuts: "Big Band Days," "Tuxedo Junction," "Taking a Chance on Love," "Skylark," "Everything Old Is New Again," "Do Nothin' 'Till You Hear from Me," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," "Java Jive," a stunning "The White Cliffs of Dover" (recorded live at the 2001 SPEBSQSA Chorus Finals), a marvelous "Gershwin Medley," "Imagination," the lovely title tune, and a live bonus track, "dedicated to the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001." "Sentimental" is a nostalgic treat from start to finish by one of the best choruses on the planet. Songlist: Big Band Days, Tuxedo Junction, Taking A Chance On Love, Skylark, Everything Old Is New Again, Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Java Jive, The White Cliffs of Dover, Gershwin Medley, Imagination, Sentimental Journey The Real Group : Unreal Whee! "The Flight Of The Foobirds" is chock full of delicious scat, "A Cappella In Acapulco" is not only alliteratively alluring but it will have your feet tapping for sure. "A Child Is Born" is nothing short of unreal! Hmm, there's a recording title there somewhere. The vocal trumpet on that one tune is plenty of reason enough to listen to Unreal! about a hundred times. It doesn't seem possible. What we have here is one of two cds released only for the Canadian and U.S. markets which includes some of the very finest of The Real Group. In addition to the dozen tunes sung in English, there are two Swedish folk songs. No, no, neither the Beatles nor Hoagy Carmichael is Swedish but Anders Edenroth is, and shares three originals with us including the aforementioned "A Cappella In Acapulco." Songlist: Flight of the Foo-Brids, Walkin', A Cappella in Acapulco, A Child is Born, Come Together, Wait and See, Skylark, I've Found a New Baby, What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life?, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Body and Soul, Kristallen Den Fina, Jag Vet En Dejlig Rosa, For the One I Love The Real Group : The Real Thing Now, why do we love the Real Group so much? One of the many reasons is they have vocally mastered just about every music genre out there... and this CD proves just that! Many of these songs might be familiar to the die-hard Real Group fans out there, but unless you've seen them in concert you probably have not heard them sing their rockin' version of the Beatles' 'Ticket To Ride'or the beautiful melody and the lush background harmonies in 'Song From The Snow.' Also, when you purchase this CD you'll be treated to an additional disc that you can pop in your DVD player and watch them sing 'Ticket to Ride,' 'Splanky,' 'No More Blues' and a few other fun tunes, in a live recording! Don't miss this CD! Maureen McGovern, whose late father James was a barbershopper in his younger days, and from the age of 5 she used to sing parts with him and his quartet. She joins the chorus beautifully on Johnny Mercer/Hoagy Carmichael's classic "Skylark" and the Gershwins' "Our Love is Here to Stay." Mattson protegees VoicesIowa, students or alumni of prestigious Southwestern Community College's School for Music Vocations (4 men, 2 women) have a bright, effortless sound that invites comparison with the Real Group and The Idea of North. Technically there are just 5 cuts on the CD, but on the first cut, for instance, a sleepy "Without A Song," segues into a scattish "The Song Is You," continues with a sweetly jazzy "You Are The Sunshine of My Life before returning to an upbeat "Without A Song" refrain; and cut 4, "A Hoagy Carmichael Tribute," includes the lightly accompanied "The Nearness of You," "Heart and Soul," "I Get Along Without You Very Well," "Georgia On My Mind," "Ole Buttermilk Sky," "Stardust," "Lazybones," "Two Sleepy People," "Skylark" and "Lazy River." Two a cappella tunes, "Alfie" and the final cut , "Over the Rainbow" are particularly nice. Mattson doesn't waste a note, and VoicesIowa is an apt, finely-tuned instrument for his genius. Songlist: Without A Song, The Song Is You, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Alfie, Just The Way You Are, The Nearness of You, Heart and Soul, I Get Along Without You Very Well, Georgia On My Mind, Ole' Buttermilk Sky, Stardust, Lazybones, Two Sleepy People, Skylark, Lazy River, Over The Rainbow |
