When Sir Michael Tippett first worked with the BBC Singers in 1944, the experience was such that he recalled nearly 50 years later that "It was to be the first of many such occasions when a composer's dreams were brought to fulfillment." Tippett's relationship with the BBC Singers went back to almost the beginning of his career, and he often expressed intense admiration for them. His faith is rewarded here. Now under the Conductor Laureate, Stephen Cleobury, the present-day BBC Singers return the compliment with this program of his works for choir, both unaccompanied and with organ. The plaintive high solo of the Nunc Dimittis, floating above strange middle-range harmonies, soars worlds away from cosy Anglican convention. The 'sprung' rhythms of Dance Clarion Air and The Windhover have a muscular freedom unlike anything in contemporary English music. The strangely irregular figures Tipett waves around the tune in Over the Sea to Skye may seem over-ingenious at first, but by the end their quite hypnotic, at the same time challenging the ear to re-examine a very familiar melody.

The 60-voice Harvard Glee Club, Harvard's internationally renowned men's chorus, is the oldest college chorus in America, founded by students in 1858 to sing college songs and glees. It took until 1912, under the dynamic direction of Dr. Archibald T. Davison, that the Glee Club developed a repertoire of distinction and gained a national reputation. Drawing its repertoire from six centuries, the Glee Club has proved itself particularly expert in the performance of contemporary American music, sacred repertory of the Renaissance, Eastern European music and Folk songs of the world. Under the direction of Jameson Marvin since 1978, the HGC has enhanced its reputation as one of America premier collegiate choruses. Delighting audiences in Seattle and around northwest Washington since 2006 with the beautiful sound of classically-trained women's voices singing a diverse repertoire of historic and contemporary music, the Mirinese Women's Choir brings us another excellent live recording of 18 songs. Favorites are Gyorgy Orban's 4-part, piano-accompanied "Mass No. 6," H. Hollanders' a cappella "Exultate, justi, in Domino," Stephen Paulus' "Sing Creation's Music On," Claude Debussy's lovely "Beau Soir," Bob Chilcott's "Skye Boat Song" and "White Waves on the Water" (these last four are piano-accompanied, as are most songs on the album), Sarah Hopkins' "Honour the Earth as Your Mother," the spiritual "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down" and Rene Clausen's "Set Me As A Seal." A powerful collection from this talented, wonderfully-directed ensemble!

The South Bay Childrens Choir is based at El Camino College in the Los Angeles area of Southern California and is under the artistic direction of Diane Simons. Co-founded in 1996 by the late Dr. Jane Hardester and Diane Simons, the choir produced their first CD, "In the Beginning - 1998 to 2005", featuring the Bel Canto singers, known for their impeccable intonation, blend, and expressiveness. The repertoire includes classical favorites such as "Dome Epais" by Delibes and a riveting performance of Britten's "This Little Babe", as well as many exciting folksong settings, including 'Sail Away" by Malcolm Dalgleish, performed a capella. The title song "In the Beginning" by Imant Raminsh shows off the choir in its early years, and the 2005 premier performance of "Platanos" by Edward Cansino demonstrates their later maturity as singers. There are three pieces, (Missa Brevis, It Was a Lover and His Lass and Till Morning) by composer-in-residence B. Wayne Bisbee.

Artistic Director Barbara Berner leads the various permutations of the 500 strong St. Louis Children's Choirs in this accompanied, 2-disc collection of 38 songs, which features eight new works commissioned to celebrate the Choirs' 30th anniversary. These include the Concert Choir, Children's Choir, Music Makers, Chorale, Chamber Singers, Young Men's Ensemble and Alumni of these smaller choirs. Founder of legendary Boston-based Vocal Jazz group Vox One, Yumiko has always been one of our favorite vocalists and arrangers. She has two excellent collections of arrangements in the PAC catalog, "Collection Vol. 1" and "Collection Vol. 2." The Anthology "To Every Thing" is her first solo album, and it includes a piece Yumiko wrote for acoustic guitar for some friends' wedding, "Tsubasa," her arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," performed by the Western Wind with Yumiko, and her marvelous arrangements of the English Traditional tunes "Scarborough Fair," "Black is the Color" and the title tune, performed by Boston Jazz Voices. The Western Wind also shines on Yumiko's arrangements of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love" and Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby." Yumiko's classically accompanied arrangement of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," her lovely arrangement of Joanie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," performed by Syncopation; and the Scottish Traditional "Skye Boat Song," performed by Yumiko with the women of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, are all favorites. "To Every Thing" is a remarkable collection, highlighting the tremendous vocal, arranging and composing talents of Vocal Jazz master Yumiko!
