Original member Norm Silver, aided and abetted by Jackie Farrell and Rita Dean, who also appeared on the All Stars last recording, "True Colors," are joined by three new members (including a vocal percussionist), though their musical journey in fact began much earlier - they won the Harmony Sweepstakes in 1993! The six members of this mixed group recently won the Denver regional competition of the Harmony Sweepstakes. Therefore their sound has evolved as well, and though their warm blend and soulful performances have not changed, depending on whom is assigned the lead vocal duties, a variety of impressions emerge. The earthy "Walking In Memphis," for example, is balanced by the eighties sheen of "Don't Stop Believin'." Superior clarity and a spacious mix helps to open up the ears for this tuneful new incarnation.

The Swedish choral tradition enjoys a very high reputation, with music lovers often claiming to be able to recognize a uniquely Swedish choral sound. Exactly what this sound consists of is difficult to pinpoint, but often mentioned are keywords such as melancholy, the Scandinavian countryside, folk music and traditional ballads. The selection of works on this disc exemplifies all of these, and the performance of them has been entrusted to one of the choirs that have shaped Swedish choral music: Allmaanna Sangen, an Uppsala student choir with a history going back for more than 175 years. The choir's position in Swedish cultural life was demonstrated in 2005 by an invitation to sing at the Nobel Banquet. That performance was televised throughout the world, and in fact included three of the works on this disc - Biegga Luothe, Glaspolskan and Byss-Kalles slangpolska. Great traditions notwithstanding, this disc offers a new perspective on its subject, as the choir brings out new resonances in the often well-known music. A collaboration with Swedish jazz pianist Anders Widmark lends unusual colours to settings of ancient folk chorales (I Himmelen) and traditional harvest songs (Slattervisa), as well as to classics from the treasure of Swedish choral music such as Stenhammar's Three Choral Songs and Alfven's Evening. Both Allmanna Sangen and Anders Widmark have made a number of successful recordings, and now that they join forces for the first time, it is an occasion not to be missed.

The King's Men (the men's voices from King's College Choir) release a new album of close harmony arrangements. Produced in-house at King's, the album features previously unrecorded pop and jazz arrangements written for the group by current and former choral scholars. The songs range from classics such as 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' and 'Old Man River' to more recent hits such as Carly-Rae Jepson's 'Call Me Maybe'. The group was helped by new Assistant Director of Music and former 'Swingle Singer' Ben Parry, who coached them in the art of close harmony singing.

Brigham Young University's premiere 9-man a cappella ensemble, Vocal Point is known for their solid vocal percussion, innovative arrangements and pure vocal firepower. Orlando, FL-based 3-man, 2 Women Vox Audio, formerly Toxic Audio, who jumped fro the 1998 Orlando Fringe Festival to featured Disney performers, to 2000 Harmony Sweeps Champs, were on a huge roll, and it has kept going: their "Chemistry" was named 2003 CASA Album of the Year, national tv appearances, and their off-Broadway show in NYC's Houseman Theatre won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for "Unique Theatrical Experience." Officially changing their moniker to Vox Audio with "Voice Activated, the group thanks the name in the liner notes for "13 years of faithful service, we hope you enjoy your condo in Boca!" Toxic Audio's live shows and CDs have always been hilarious, and "Voice Activated" follows suit bigtime: "I Gotta Firework," "Sound Guy," "Go to Bed Early," "I Wish I Could Go Back to College," "Quiet Time" and "Swingin' Low," which features a "Wicked Scat Solo" by Michelle, "Wicked Horn" by Paul and "Wicked Bass" by Trist Curless, are all hilarious. Great, funny stuff by one of our all time favorite a cappella groups!
