Rķu Rķu Chķu, also known as Rķu Chķu, is a Spanish villancico that has attained some contemporary fame as a Christmas carol. The villancico is attributed by some sources to Mateo Flecha the Elder, who died in 1553; it has also been described as anonymous. The song also bears a strong resemblance to another villancico, Falalanlera, by Bartomeu Cąrceres, a Catalan composer. It is known from a single source, the Cancionero de Upsala, published in 1556 in Venice; a unique copy is preserved at the library of the University of Uppsala. The song appears as the fortieth song of that collection. Daniel R. Melamed described the song as "redoubtable", and mentions it as a contender for the best known piece of Renaissance music

Just a quick listen to John Rutter's "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," and accompanist Michael Neaum's arrangements of "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Do You Hear What I Hear," and we know what a treat "Noel" is going to be! Mostly accompanied by piano, flute and other instruments, there are few sounds as joyous and welcoming at Christmas than these soaring, spirited young voices singing favorites like "Patapan," "Stille Nacht," "White Christmas," "Riu, Riu Chiu" and "Away in a Manger;" and lesser-known tunes like "I Sing of a Maiden," "Lullay Myn Lyking," "Midwinter" and "Pastorcito Santo." Treat yourself and your loved ones to "Noel," a true musical Christmas gift! Songlist: Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, The Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear?, I Sing of a Maiden, A Maiden Most Gentle, Patapan, Midwinter, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Pastorcito Santo, Shepherd's Pipe Carol, What Child is This?, The Lily and the Rose, Sussex Carol, Stille Nacht, Mary's Lullaby, Lullay Myn Lyking, Away in a Manger, The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy, White Christmas Cantus : Comfort and Joy Vol 2 Minneapolis/St. Paul's ten-strong, all-male Cantus has impressed us with their excellent earlier recordings and continue to do so with "Comfort and Joy: Volume Two," their second Christmas recording. Song selection and arrangements (and, for that matter, the elegant liner notes) are particularly fine here. Little-known pieces like "Puer natus in Bethlehem," Omnis mundus jucundetur," "Four Carols" by Halsey Stevens," Wm. Dawson's "Hail Mary," the Plainchant "Hodie Christus natus est," the Georgian wassailing song "Alilo," Ariel Ramirez' "Los Reyes Magos" and Babatunde Olatunji's "Betelehemu" with the more traditional carols like "Go Tell it On the Mountain," the French carol "Masters In This Hall," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," "Riiu Riu Chiu," and an almost unrecognizable arrangement of "Deck the Halls." Some percussion and accompaniment. Consistent throughout are the powerful harmonies of Cantus, one of our favorite male ensembles. Songlist: Puer natus in Bethlehem, Omnis mundus jucundetur, Four Carols, All This Night Shrill Chanticleer, What Sweeter Music, As I Out Rode This Enderes Night, A Virgin Most Pure, Hail Mary, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Hodie Christmas naatus est, Masters in this Hall, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Alilo, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Los Reyes Magos, Bethlehemu, Deck The Halls Chanticleer : Our Heart's Joy Comprising a mix of old and new, ecclesiastic and pastoral, familiar and undiscovered, this CD is a rich array. Biebl's "Ave Maria" is a contemporary setting, the final "Amen" resolved in a series of step-wise imitative phrases. Britten's "A Hymn To The Virgin" is a simple and consonant arrangement with a stark and melancholy beauty. The merry and lively ""Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant" is arranged by Rutter, while a medley of Christmas spirituals is a satisfying blend of Chanticleer's trained vocal style, with the non-diatonic contradiction of the blues. The final track: "Silent Night," capturing all the magic of the season, as simple and unique as a perfect snowflake. Newly remastered in 2004. Songlist: Ave Maria...Virgo serena, Quem vidistis pastores?, In dulci jubilio, Virgen sancta, E la don don, Riu, riu, chiu, Ave Maria, There Is No Rose, A Hymn to the Virgin, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day -, Il est ne le divin enfant, O Come, o Come, Emmanuel, I Wonder as I Wander, Medley of Christmas Spirituals, Rise Up Shepherd and Follow, Behold That Star, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Poor Little Jesus, What Month Was Jesus Born in?, Children, Go Where I Send Thee, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Silent Night Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Classic Christmas Carols The Choir of King's College, Cambridge has always been synonymous with Christmas -- from the yearly television broadcast of their Lessons and Carols service to their numerous best-selling albums of Christmas songs and masses. In a dramatic change of direction that highlights the Choir's versatility, "Horses" is a collection of World music, beginning with the thundering drums of David Fanshawe's "African Sanctus" and the gentle guitar riffs of "A La Nanita Nana" by Roger Folstrom, the CD continually surprises us. The powerful "Betelehemu" is a "bring the house down" piece in concert, "Prayer of the Children," brings tears remembering children caught in bloodshed and ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia in the 1970, and the Chinese "Usuli Boat Song," celebrates finding ways to be happy. The final cut, the title tune, a Mongolian song actually called "Naiman Sharag," gives the feeling of horses running, the song ends quietly, as if the horses are in the far distance. These massive concerts, given as a free gift to the community each year, and broadcast by PBS, are both joyful and reverential. This CD offers the full experience of the concert, with a 'you-are-there' viewpoint and behind the scenes interviews that can be viewed again and again. The choir is joined by the 120-member Orchestra at Temple Square, as well as The Bells at Temple Square, plus a score of dancers who perform an opening processional, and take part in the charming, complete presentation of "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" which has to be seen to be believed. Songlist: Rejoice And Be Merry, The First Nowell, Deck The Hall With Boughs Of Holly, El Nino Querido, La Peregrinacion, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine, One December, Bright And Clear, O Holy Night, Sussex Carol, Rise Up, Shepherd, And Follow!, Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, I Saw Three Ships, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, What Child Is This?, The Christmas Story: Luke 2, Angels, From The Realms Of Glory Motet Singers : Sing Noel The Motet Singers are ten female vocalists who began in 1982 as a vocal sight-reading group under the direction of Hannelore Good. They sing a cappella music from classical, folk and popular genres, ranging from medieval to contemporary, and are known for their pure sound, seamless blending of voices and the eclectic variety of their music. There are 20 tracks here, from a fine "Salve Regina" by Javier Busto and several other contemporary and 20th century pieces, to short sacred works by Renaissance composers Morales and Palestrina, to some very nice 19th and 20th century arrangements of Spanish carols from various periods. Some of our favorites: "A la Puerta del Cielo," "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" and "Ave Maria." There are drums on at least one cut. Everything relates to the Nativity theme, and there is a nice mix of unfamiliar winners with familiar favorites. An exceptional, beautifully sung CD! Songlist: Sactus, O My Dear Heart, Three Spanish Carols, Ya Viene La Vieja, A La Puerta del Cielo, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Deck the Hall, White Christmas, Ave Maria, Lullay my liking, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, O Magnum Mysterium, Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging, Over the Hill Maria Went, A La Nanita Nana, Good King Wenceslas, The Christmas Song, The Holly and the Ivy, The Three Kings, Some Children See Him, Salve Regina Oxford Camerata : Medieval Carols In 15th-century England a tradition grew up for the composition of polyphonic carols. None of them is ascribed to a specific composer or poet, neither is their function completely understood. The form is that of alternating verses and burdens (refrains), the language generally being a mixture of Latin and English. The majority of the carols have sacred texts and it is possible that these were designed for liturgical use. Others are moralistic or celebratory and were possibly used to enliven feasts and banquets in aristocratic households or for recreational purposes at educational establishments. This CD is (along with the selection of songs from the Piae Cantiones) the Camerata's smallest-scale recording project. Only four voices are used throughout (Rebecca Outram, Deborah Mackay, Philip Cave, and Jeremy Summerly) although one of the tracks does also involve Jeremy Summerly playing the tambourine! The Christmas spirit was well captured by arranging to record this CD in December in sub-zero temperatures. The project attracted much attention and ulitmately resulted in the milennial publication of a volume of medieval songs and carols by Faber Music entitled Passetime with good company! Songlist: Ave Maria, What Tiding's Bringest Thou, O Virdissima Virga, Alma Redemptoris Mater, Deo Gracias Anglia, Be Merry Be Merry, Riu, Riu, Chiu, There Is No Rose, Planctus Guillelmus, Eya Mater Stephane, Gaudate Christus Est Natus, Hail Mary Full Of Grace, Now We May Singen, Nowell Sing We, Planctus David Sixteen : Christmas Music from Medieval & Renaissance A fine collection of Christmas music from medieval and renaissance Europe by this highly accomplished choir under the direction of Harry Christophers. It's nice to hear several Hanukkah tunes instead of one or maybe two. All the songs are at least lightly accompanied.
