An exuberant festival psalm setting, commissioned for the Golden Jubilee service in June 2002 and first performed in St Paul's Cathedral. The sense of celebration and dancing rhythms of the main choir contrast with the reflective, ethereal sections for the three solo sopranos, positioned in the dome at the first performance, to create a work of great effect and power.
This festival anthem, creatively presented with only voices, tambourine and suspended cymbal, is a virtuosic rendering of a celebrated Psalm text. Rhythmically unrelenting, the piece demands a crisp approach and a steady tempo. The words are an integral aspect of the drive of this anthem, forming motives filled with percussive impact. Some surprising non-traditional tones bring a modern flair to the sonic ambience of the choral textures. Wonderful!

The first disc, "Heaven," contains sacred music both accompanied and a cappella. Two of our favorites are mini-masterworks, Benjamin Britten's lovely "Missa Brevis in D," for voices and organ, and Francis Poulenc's mysterious "Litanies a la vierge noire." Disc II, "Earth," focuses on secular music to capture human qualities such as sorrow, joy, humor and hope. The centerpieces of the disc are three new commissions by Gabriela Lena Frank, Augusta Read Thomas and Dwight Nakamura. Frank's beautiful settings of two Peruvian poems, Thomas' elegant use of E.E. Cummings' poetry and Nakamura's jazzy take on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" are all very special. Conductor Susan McMane directs this renowned chorus in 24 beautiful tunes. A wonderfully packaged set with extensive liner notes would make a memorable, timeless holiday gift to your family and to others on your list! John Davies' paraphrase of the 150th Psalm says much in few words and brings familiar sentiments to life in a new way. Each line of text is infused with exultation, which is echoed in the vocal fanfare figures. (2:00)
