Norman Luboff : Cowboy Songs Get some "giddy up" to your repertoire by adding a classic cowboy folk song to your concert material. Songlist: Ghost Riders In The Sky, The Streets of Laredo, The Colorado Trail, Doney Gal, The Old Chisholm Trail, Poor Lonesome Cowboy Various Arrangers : American Folksongs for Female Voices "Poor Lonesome Cowboy" is an original arrangement by Norman Luboff of this famous cowboy's lament. "All The Pretty Little Horses" is a traditional Southeastern American folksong featuring canonic imitation, vocal ostinati, and delicately intertwining melodies, this a cappella setting is stunning. "Sacramento - Sis Joe" is a wiry, spiky combination of two American folk songs; one very well-known; one somewhat obscure. The better known is Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" but it's appearance here, however, is with a completely different text that captures the excitement of a mid-1800's trip to California in search of gold! "Sis Joe" is a traditional railroad song that was used by Aaron Copland in "Rodeo". Songlist: Poor Lonesome Cowboy, Sacramento Sis Joe, All The Pretty Little Horses Various : 25 Folksong Solos for Children Folksongs especially arranged for a child's solo voice (including a unchanged boy's treble voice), with a limited range, designed to encourage lyric singing, and easy piano accompaniments. The 70-voice choir takes more chances on their second CD, in the form of more solos and more adventuresome arrangements. The song selection continues to be all over the map, from Gabriel Faure's "Pie Jesu from Requiem Mass" to Joan Varner's wonderful "When I Am Silent." Given this urge to express themselves as individuals, their popular pre-CHristmas concerts, known locally as "caprices," are not just a collective letting down of hair," but a much-appreciated opportunity for displaying all sorts of individual talents not usually required of choristers -- whether this be writing musical sketches, singing in some hitherto undiscovered register, representing half of a theatrical horse and etceteras. Add to this Eric Ericson, the world's greatest choral conductor -- who looked after Orphei Drangar for forty years because he enjoyed them so much -- and the mixture is potent, not to say explosive. Like all the greatest musicians Eric Ericson has that well-developed sense of humor that comes from recognizing that one has been entrusted with a very rare gift. Together, Eric Ericson and Orphei Drangar let their hair down in grand style. Indeed they elevate the very concept of "letting one's hair down" into something like an art form.
