There are quite a few "family dynasties" in the a cappella world, most notably in barbershop, but here we have a very auspicious beginning of perhaps another. Keith Lancaster has built a very solid reputation as director of the various groups under the Acappella Ministries banner and now three of his children Melissa Lancaster, Kim Lancaster and Anthony Lancaster along with three others have formed the mixed group Durant. The children grew up on the road and in the studio with their father and have individually produced and performed on an impressive amount of recordings. This collection of praise and inspirational songs clearly demonstrates that musical talent can be genetic and fans of contemporary Christian music are sure to find this recording a real treat.

Boston's Fermata Town, founded in 2009 and inspired by the wealth of new talent in the a cappella world, became the newest member of the Contemporary A Cappella League; and promptly won the very competitive Boston Harmony Sweeps Regional. At the crazy-good National Finals in San Rafael, CA, the group tied for third place and their rendition of "Starting Line" won the award for Best Original Song. "Hold That Thought" features 9 cuts, all with stellar arrangements, primarily by group members Katya Dreyer-Oren and Philipp Walzer. Young contemporary Christian quintet from Washington state, who obviously know their Motown soul. As such, they don't sound much like fellow Christian groups like the AVB or Rescue; Heaven's Playground place less emphasis on state-of-the-art production and multitracking, and more on punchy rhythms and vertically structured harmonies. This is within the context of songs such as 'Sir Duke,' 'Fly Away' (written by Cedric Dent), and the guitar-accompanied 'Workin' For Da Man,' which should become a rockabilly cult classic - very cool minor chord derived harmonies give it the feel of genuine lament. The recitation intro of 'Have You Seen Her,' along with the arrangement and even the stylistic inflections, are an uncannily accurate rendering of 1960's doo-wop/soul. The final track? That pillar of the barbershop pantheon, 'Coney Island Baby.' These guys are fun.

Ladysmith crosses cultural boundaries more than ever before to bring their musical message to a wider audience. The lineup of musicians who with whom they work is fabulous. The album begins with one of the most complex pieces of music imaginable from Joseph who admits that his music is very difficult to sing. Dolly Parton leads "Knockin' On Heavens Door." "O Happy Day" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord" features vocalist Betty Griffin. Phoebe Snow is lead singer on "People Get Ready." Bill Champlin does the lead vocal on "River Of Dreams." You'll find Lou Rawls in lead on "Chain Gang" and Hana "Coyote" Motijoane sings lead on "I'll Take You There." Among these instrumentally accompanied guest appearances which explore American gospel and R&B are an equal number of Ladysmith familiars. 1997 Harmony Sweepstakes Winners, SoVoSo alsowon the CARA that same year in the category Studio Album Of The Year. The majority of the six members had been singing together for ten years or so, since being members in Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra. In fact "Dirt" the six movement, twenty plus minute marvel of improvisation was written by McFerrin and SoVoSo as a dance score for the Oberlin Dance Co. of San Francisco. This reviewer particularly loves Melanie Rath's "Show Them Dance"; David Worm's "Say", Joey Blake's "Tu Para Mi" and Rhiannon's "Say A Prayer." Oh heck, all of them!

Its a beautiful world according to Take 6 and a beautiful body of work for their fans across the board. The 10th offering from the sextet is simply called 'Beautiful World'. Although accompanied by instruments played by the six members themselves, the vocal arrangement shine through like the earlier material that originally gave the group their offical stamp in a cappella. Unlike their last studio CD 'So Cool' which was all original material, this entire project is comprised of Pop, R&B, and gospel standards. 'Wade in the Water' and 'Peace in the Valley' are gospel gems reminiscent of 'Get Away Jordan' and 'Mary dont you Weep'. 'People Get Ready' (Curtis Mayfield) with soaring heights and winding riffs takes you for a whole new ride. 'Lovely Day' (Bill Withers) and 'Loves in Need' (Stevie Wonder) are instantly recognizable, but revamped rethoughtand rearranged in a way that only Take 6 can do. Our favorite is the thought provoking 'Fragile' (Sting) where the haunting melody is kept over lush and thick harmonies you expect to hear from Take 6. Dont be surprised if the 13 new songs from 'Beautiful World' make you a fan all over again.
