The Turtle Creek Chorale, one of the nation's finest men's choruses, celebrated its 25th year in 2006. In honor of that occasion, they published eleven pieces performed by this talented group in one, fascinating new choral collection for TTBB voices. Included in the book are superb settings of everything from a lush Psalm to a rousing Harriet Tubman and compositions or arrangements by well-known names such as David Friedman, Joseph Martin, Mark Hayes and others. And how worthy they are is clearly demonstrated on this fine recording as the ladies are in top form as they sing some classic barbershop songs along with some vintage jazz gems. Made up of members of the Melodeers and the Choral-Aires Sweet Adeline choruses the quartet members Lynda, Joan, Heather and Cori fine individual voices blend in great harmony with a spirit that shows why we love female barbershop singing so much. Some favorites among these 16 songs are "Tin Roof Blues," the title tune (New Orleans Decoupage 'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans"), "Original Dixieland One-Step," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Ja-Da," "Where the Southern Roses Grow," "Calypso Medley," "Alexander's Band is Back in Dixieland," "Zip-A-Dee Dooh-Dah," "Polka Medley," "I'll Fly Away," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Teen Medley" and "Irish Blessing." T Minus 5 : Road Trip   

We know we're in for a good time with the first rock-solid vocal percussion beats of War's "Low Rider" come on T-minus 5's "radio," which segues into Sly and the Family Stone's rock anthem "Dance to the Music," an electronic-funky, faux-horned masterpiece. Group member Shawn Satterthwaite contributes the sweet, romantic "Your Love," other nice originals are "Wrapped Up In You" by Wayne Kirkpatrick, and " Midnight Daze" by T Minus 5. Excellent covers of Lennon/McCartney's "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Mayberry," Barry Manilow's "One Voice," "He Still Loves Me" (arranged by our friend Richard "Bob" Green, and The Guess Who's "American Woman" add to the good feeling. We loved T-Minus 5 at the 2001 Harmony Sweeps Finals, and their great harmonies and down home song selection have only gotten better. Every song on "Road Trip" is a winner!

Vocal Majority / Mormon Tabernacle Choir : Voices In Harmony

Two of the world's greatest vocal groups, one traditional and one barbershop, together in a single collection, recorded live in 1986 (don't be concerned about the sound or vocal quality; it's super). Three of the songs, "How Great Thou Art," "Love At Home" and "Nearer My God To Thee," feature both, and the remaining eleven tracks allow each ensemble to showcase their unique talents. As the Tabernacle Choir's director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, explains, the choir sings with "an openness of resonance, and the Majority sings primarily with forward resonance. That is, they sound brighter." Most of the songs are inspirational (and about half are organ accompanied), though "Danny Boy," "Home On The Range," "Windows Of the World" and Barry Manilow's "One Voice" round out the set. Both groups have a rich and full tone that is at the same time transparent and weightless; ensemble singing at its best!

Eight men and six women form the acclaimed Voices of Lee (University of Cleveland, TN), directed since their debut in 1994 by Danny Murray, apply their rich harmonic blend and top-drawer soloists to their fourth winning album. "Encore" begins with Barry Manilow's "One Voice," a jazzy, upbeat "Power in Praisin' the Lord," a striking, powerful vocal-percussion gem, "Mercy Seat," the heartfelt "Ho, Everyone Who Is Thirsty" (arranged by Derrick Johnson), a scattish, bright arrangement of "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," the Doo-Woppy Gospel number "When God Dips His Love," the traditional hymns "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Have You Met Jesus" (both also arranged by Johnson), and a bonus track of "Mercy Seat," our personal favorite. Ten songs in total, and there's not a weak track among them. Confident solos, solid harmonies, great arrangements-"Encore" just knocked our socks off! It's one of the best Contemporary Christian albums we've heard this year.

We believe that Lee's University's Voices Of Lee is one of the finest Christian a cappella ensembles performing today and their excellence shines thru in this well produced DVD. A nice bonus is that four members of the ensemble also makes up the International Barbershop quartet champions Four Voices who step to the front to perform a couple of dynamic songs. This 2 DVD set has over two hours of performances and with it's high quality production values it will be a show you will watch over and over.
