Theodore Chanler was an American composer born in 1902, who studied with Nadia Boulanger and taught at Peabody Conservatory. He was not a prolific composer, but lavished great care over the songs he wrote and they are much loved. Most of these were previously unpublished or out of print.

This is one snazzy quartet - the Auto Towners had definitely calculated the entertainment quotient, and one look at them in their costumes on the back cover will tell you that; their win at the 1966 Chicago Convention made quite an impression! Though they only continued quartetting until '69, songs such as "My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose" (with a solo by Clint Bostick, baritone) and "Everything's Coming Up Roses" evoke all of the romance and nostalgia of this classic American form, and are impossible to resist. Truly awesome versions of "I Wish You Love," "Dancing On The Ceiling" and "Through The Years" show that the Auto Towners actual forte were tender, achingly lovely ballads - the harmonic resonance of these four voices would stop traffic!

The Buzz are a Sweet Adeline supergroup! Harborlites : Something's Coming   

Based in Anaheim, California, the Harborlites Chorus was founded in 1960 and since 1993 has been under the direction of Pam Pieson, the 1990 queen of harmony of the highly regarded Panache quartet. The chorus are winners of numerous regional and international medals and this is their first ever CD recording. Plenty of great Sweet Adeline singing here with particular favorites being the Jay Giallombardo arrangement of Sondheim's "Tonight", the David Wright arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's' "Something's Coming (from West Side Story) and the entertaining opening medley of "Ain't Misbehavin'/Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do."

The redoubtable Keepsake have consistently impressed with their musical fluency and extensive barbershop vocabulary. Brittany, Mia, Caitlin and Stephanie, the artists formerly known as UnderAge, have been working, competing and performing together for six years. As UnderAge they became 2005 International quartet champions for the Sweet Adelines Young Women in Harmony division, which led to guest performances all over the country, sharing the stage with the Kingston Trio, participating in America's Got Talent in both Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and were guest performers in Germany for the Barbershop in Germany festival. They also won the 2009 Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional, and took Audience Favorite and 2nd Place at the Sweeps National Finals in San Rafael. Whew! "All You Need is (Love, actually, on the cover, it's a heart symbol)" is their 2nd CD, 12 of the tunes that have been gaining the group a huge following in web portals such as YouTube and Facebook, including our favorites "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Angel of Music" from Phantom of the Opera, which they totally nailed at the Finals. The New Tradition Chorus, from the Chicago area of Illinois, have been International Competition Silver Medalists for the last six years (including Anaheim '99). This CD was inspired by the Chorus' trip to Ireland in 1997, and the opening track is an "Irish Montage," evoking their warmly-received performances there. The thirteen-member "Next Generation," a subsidiary group of the Chorus, performs "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" and "Calendar Girl," while the Sweet Adelines Championship Chorus The Melodeers contribute their voices for "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic," recorded live in 1995. The "Cities Of America" medley is an entertaining whistlestop tour; anyone who has seen the New Tradition Chorus live understands that, along with their musical excellence, the show's the thing!

After the final harmonious chord of a spirited Sweet Adelines International Chorus competition in Nashville, North Metro Chorus was wearing the gold, followed by Gem City, Scottsdale Chorus, Harborlites and Pacific Sound. We get to hear 4 tunes from the winners, 3 each from the 4 runners-up and 2 each from the rest of the top ten. Simply the best from the great Nashville convention!

Dozens of top Sweet Adelines quartets descended on Phoenix, AZ in 2003, looking for gold, and here we have the 10 best. The tension builds as we begin with two tunes from Long Beach, CA's Persuasion, 10th place, followed by two from Arvada, CO's Ms. Behavin', and so on until we hear 3 tunes from 5th place winners, Stockholm, Sweden's Remix, 3 from one of our favorites, Roseville, CA's Razzcals, Sweden's Salt, Ann Arbor, MI's Spotlight, and finally 4 tunes from Vancouver BC's Brava!, "Toot Toot Tootsie," "I Will Love You 'Til The End Of Time," "A Tree In The Meadow" and "Angry/Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home." Great music and all the excitement of this huge, live competition!

Once again, another fine year for the Sweet Adelines International Chorus competition, not to mention the fact that it was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year we have North Metro Chorus in 3rd place, the Melodeers in 2nd, and champions this year were the Rich Tone Chorus, of Richardson, Texas. Some of today's, and yesterday's, finest songs were transformed into tight barbershop arrangements and sung with gusto by these choruses, who were all very deserving of their spot in the top 10.

Incredible costumes, joyous faces-dozens of beaming, beautiful women having big fun singing their hearts out, going for the Gold. That honor went to Scottsdale (AZ) Chorus, so consistently fine that they have entered 13 International competitions since 1976 and have placed no lower than 3rd, winning it all 4 times! Silver went to Pride of Baltimore Chorus, 3rd to Kansas City (MO) Chorus and 4th to Coastline Show Chorus of Providence, RI. This "best-of" compilation features 2 songs each for the 5th to 10th place finishers, beginning with Greater Nassau Chorus's "At A Georgia Camp Meeting," 3 songs each for 5th through 2nd place groups, and 4 songs for the Champs, as it should be! Favorites among these 26 tunes are Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do," by Scottsdale Chorus, Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean," by Pride of Baltimore, "Runnin' Wild," by Kansas City Chorus and "The Joint Is Jumpin'" by Coastline Show Chorus. Powerful harmonies, hitting on all cylinders from the Motor City!

The 61st Annual Sweet Adelines International 2007 Convention and Competition took place in Calgary, Saskatchewan, and this wonderful live CD gives us a generous helping of the colorful chorus competition. One only has to glance at the photos of the top ten finishers in the sparse liner notes to get a taste of the color and excitement of this event. Anaheim, CA's Harborlites Chorus took the gold, Pride of Baltimore 2nd, Lions Gate Chorus from Vancouver, BC, Coastline Show Chorus from Providence, RI 4th, and Kansas City Chorus took 5th place. Harborlites has four winners here, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," "A Bundle of Old Love Letters," "When Day Is Done" and "Sweet Georgia Brown;" the 2nd through 4th place finishers have 3 songs each, and the 6th through 10th place winners, which include the Toast of Tampa Show Chorus, Greater Nassau Chorus, Mountain Jubilee Chorus, Christchurch City Chorus from New Zealand, and the Choral-Aires Chorus, all have 2 tunes each. We caught a live performance by this talented young Sweet Adelines quartet at the Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regionals a year or two ago, and joined the audience in rousing ovations. 16-year-old Brittany, 17-year-old Mary, 15-year-old Mia and 18-year-old Caitlin are seasoned performers who touch audiences with their wit, humor and charm as well as their sweet harmonies. "We Go Together" features 12 tunes, Barbershop chestnuts like "Georgia On My Mind," "Last Night on the Back Porch" and "Whatever Happened to the Old Songs" and "Once Upon A Time;" show tunes like "I Feel Pretty," "Angel of Music/Phantom of the Opera" and "We Go Together" from "Grease;" and pop tunes like the Rascals' "Feeling Groovy," Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," and "Happy Days/Get Happy Duet" featuring Brittany and Mia. We have to send some strokes to Sweet Adelines for cultivating and encouraging groups like UnderAge, who are off to a great start as budding Sweet Adelines, and a cappella, stars!

Based upon the stage production of the same name, this DVD is equal parts silly schtick and a musically adept and professional parody of the close harmony groups of the 1950's - Freshmen, Hi-Lo's and the like. Romantic themes dominate-"Three Coins In A Fountain, "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing," 'Cry,"-with a "Caribbean Medley" and "Scotland The Brave" (a homily to Plaid) for yukks. The style is unapologetically sentimental and deliberately cliched, but will be good fun for those who are familiar with the colloquialisms typical of the period. A good portion of the dialogue is included to introduce the songs and explain the plot.

In 2004, Indianapolis, IN played gracious host to the 2004 Sweet Adelines' convention, and some names familiar to us and our readers rose to the top of the heap. In 5th place was "Remix," 4th was "Salt," 3rd, "Spotlight," Second, "Razzcals", and in first, "The Buzz." We are treated to four songs by "The Buzz:" "No, No, Nora (Norman)," Irving Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean," Hammerstein's "Because of You," and "You Turned the Tables on Me." The Razzcals have 3 cuts, Salt has 3, Spotlight 3, "Remix" 3, and "Unplugged" and the remainder of the 10 groups, 2 each. This is great stuff from an epic competition, the mother lode for lovers of Sweet Adelines!
