The simple melody and haunting lyric to Paul Simon's Old Friends, recorded by Simon and Art Garfunkel on their Bookends LP, is presented in this contemporary harmonic framework for a cappella four-part vocal ensemble. Simon's asymmetrical phrase lengths and poetic pauses are thoughtfully treated in a rubato setting that conductors and singers will find naturally fluid and elastic. Concert choirs, vocal chamber ensembles and vocal jazz ensembles at both the high school and university levels have found this brief (2:30) and colorful rendition to be a refreshing addition to concert and festival performances.
The New York Voices hit a home run with their beautiful and poignant rendition of this song. Fred Sturm has taken that arrangement and made it appropriate for concert choir. This is a powerful addition to the new Richard Bjella Choral Series.

New York Voices : Old Friends This new choral collection represents and celebrates the incredible cross-section of high-level artistry of the beloved New York Voices - the award-winning vocal jazz group the world has adored for nearly 30 years. Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader, and Kim Nazarian have defined and raised the bar for jazz ensemble arranging and singing style and have influenced and inspired musicians, audiences, and music educators with every arrangement, workshop, and performance. Songlist: Baby Driver, Bli-Blip, Bookends, Come Home, I'll Be Seeing You, Me & Julio Down by the School Yard, Mother And Child Reunion, Old Friends, Sing, Sing, Sing, Smack Dab In The Middle, Why Don't You Write Me Various Arrangers : Simon and Garfunkel A Cappella Paul Simon is certainly one of the greatest songwriters of the modern popular song and here are some classics that are sure to please. "Baby Driver" - Sheer, unbridled fun! For college or adult jazz chorus, this arrangement as sung by the New York Voices is a bit tricky, but well worth the effort. It features incredible harmony and rhythm and some a cappella sections, but the purpose of this piece is not to get technical-just to have fun! Four-part scat singing frames the piece on either end, while your baritone soloist goes to town (with great choral support) on each verse. Baby Driver, extracted from the New York Voices Songs of Paul Simon CD, is a toe-tappin', hand-clappin' jazz party. Invite everyone you know! "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - The true beauty of the powerful lyrics in this Simon & Garfunkel hit from 1970 comes shining through in this accessible and well-crafted a cappella setting. From the simple and intimate opening to the full-voiced conclusion, your singers and audiences will enjoy an emotional concert experience! "The Sound of Silence" - The excitement for a brand new Pentatonix arrangement of a beloved pop or rock tune has become something of an achievement in an of itself. This time, Simon & Garfunkel's chart topper from '65 gets a fully vocal musical tribute. "Old Friends" - The New York Voices hit a home run with their beautiful and poignant rendition of this song. Our wait for their second album has finally been rewarded with brand new release "Old Friends!" The secret to their 2013 success, combining three veteran, past-champion singers with a hot young lead, created a winning sound, a rich, powerful blend that still works for Masterpiece and their happy live audiences. Some of our many favorites among these dozen tunes are Sondheim & Styne's "Everything's Coming Up Roses," Learner & Lane's "On a Clear Day," Boyd Atkins' "Heebie Jeebies," Leon & Otis Rene's "Sweet Lucy Brown," Lewis & Wooten's title tune, Hammerstein & Kern's "Old Man River" and Stephen Foster's classic "Oh! Susanna." You'll love the selections, arrangements, leads, harmonies, breathtaking held notes... in short, "Old Friends" is a, well, Masterpiece! Songlist: Everything's Coming Up Roses, On A Clear Day, I Heard You Singing, Everyone's Wrong But Me, The Wind, Drown In My Own Tears, Heebie Jeebies, Not While I'm Around, Sweet Lucy Brown, Old Friends, Old Man River, Oh! Susanna Vocalogy : Distilled Arising from an artist-in-residency program under Grammy-nominee Phil Mattson, who recorded their debut CD with them, "Is God a Three-Letter Word for Love?," and now self-directed, "Distilled" is Vocalogy's 3rd excellent CD. "Distilled" is an all jazz-band accompanied collection of 13 jazz standards and originals, some favorites: Charles Mingus/Joni Mitchell's tongue-in-cheek "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines," smoky-jazz arrangements of Lennon/McCartney's "Oh Darlin'," and Leonard Bernstein's "Some Other Time," a latin treatment of "Just Friends," two Jimmy Van Heusen classics, "It Could Happen to You" and "I Thought About You," Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto #2" turned into a bluenote lament, a sassy, upbeat "Groove Merchant," a stark arrangement of Paul Simon's "Old Friends," and, despite our interest in the local Giants, David Frishberg's "Dodger Blue." As we've noticed in a number of cases, Phil Mattson's musical progeny are unfailingly outstanding, and vocally, all accompaniment aside, Vocalogy is right up there with the best in jazz! Songlist: Dry Cleaner From Des Moines, Black Orpheus, Oh Darlin', Nutville, Some Other Time, Just Friends, It Could Happen To You, I Thought About You, Theme From Piano Concerto #2, Groove Merchant, Old Friends, Time Is A Healer, Dodger Blue |
