The program's title piece is from James Hopkins whose smooth, dreamlike setting of "Come to Me in the Silence of Night" has enjoyed considerable success. Other discoveries include David Conte's feverish "Charm Me Asleep", a splendid setting of Elizabethan poet Robert Herrick's restless verse. Also new to me is Jane Marshall, who contributes a delightful pair of bookend madrigals. The contrast between the initial song's blithe and bouncy air and the warmly reminiscent comfort of its companion piece is very touching. Daniel Pinkham's "Love Can Be Still" is a cycle of four poems by Norma Farber, full of startling turns of musical pphrase, infusing Pinkham's unmistakable American idiom with some complex, late-Monteverdi tricks. Perhaps the best are from Nestor himself: the four sentiment-drenched setting of Four Part-songs from the "Highlands", including two traditional texts and two from Robert Burns. Three include lovely obbligatos for solo flute. "Ca' the Yowes" and "Will ye Go, Lassie, Go?" are especially haunting. Songlist: Come to Me in the Silence of the Night, Love Can Be Still, Take me walking in your mind, After the storm is over, Da Capo, Charm Me Asleep, Four Songs from the Highlands, Ca' the Yowes, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?, Fareweel tae Tarwathie, Go, Lovely Rose, Campion Suite, There is a Garden in Her Face, Thrice Toss these Oaken Ashes, When to her Lute Corinna Sings, To Music Bent, Night was Well as Brightest Day, A Lover and his Lass, An Older Lover and His Lass, Reincarnations, Opus 6, The Coolin (The Fair Haired One), Love, bone-quiet, Mary Hines, Anthony O'Daly Auto Towners : Auto Towners This is one snazzy quartet - the Auto Towners had definitely calculated the entertainment quotient, and one look at them in their costumes on the back cover will tell you that; their win at the 1966 Chicago Convention made quite an impression! Though they only continued quartetting until '69, songs such as "My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose" (with a solo by Clint Bostick, baritone) and "Everything's Coming Up Roses" evoke all of the romance and nostalgia of this classic American form, and are impossible to resist. Truly awesome versions of "I Wish You Love," "Dancing On The Ceiling" and "Through The Years" show that the Auto Towners actual forte were tender, achingly lovely ballads - the harmonic resonance of these four voices would stop traffic! Songlist: in my brand new automobile, white cliffs of dover, if we can't be the same old sweethearts, margie, cuddle up a little closer, sonny boy, lida rose / dream of now (Bobbie Bostick, solo), pal of my cradle days, lorabelle lee, sweet dreams will ever take you home, you can't see the sun when you're crying, mame, charleston, i walk alone (al rebkop solo), O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, a fellow needs a girl (carl Dablke, solo), everything's coming up roses, try to remember, can't help lovin' that gal of mine, georgie girl, for me and my gal, Once Upon a Time, i wish you love, On the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, dancing on the ceiling, through the years Buzz : Buzzapalooza As quite possibly the most highly regarded Sweet Adeline quartet performing today we had high expectations for this new release and are pleased to report that the CD perhaps even surpasses those hopes. This is a very talented quartet of singers who has chosen a most eclectic and interesting repertoire for this recording. They are also singing the arrangements of a veritable who's who of the great barbershop arrangers including Latzko, Wright, Briner, Waeche, Clancy and Rene Craig. Barbershop gurus Joe Connelly and Tony DeRosa also helped with the recording adding further to the feel of barbershop royalty and to the impeccable sound of the CD. This Buzzapalooza has plenty of razzmatazz and is highly recommended to all fans of barbershop singing. Songlist: Give Me The Simple Life, How Deep Is The Ocean, Back In Business, Blues In The Night, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Until The Real Thing Comes Along, Because Of You, He Broke My Heart In Three PlaceJim Clancy, Sweet Hour Of PrayerDavid Wright, Midnight Serenade, Lucky To Be Me, Here And Now Cracker Jills : Cracker Jills The Cracker Jills were superstars! There, we've said it. There have been a few others in the Sweet Adelines of similar stature but since they won the Sweet Adeline International Championship in 1957 (now the winners are called Queens of Harmony) and went on to sing together for another twenty years they have been considered the most influential group in defining the world of women in barbershop singing. Most prominent in this influence is their arranger and lead singer, Renee Craig whose name you will see in the arranger's credits on almost every Sweet Adeline album. She has also been the director of the Ramapo Valley Sweet Adeline Chorus which won four Championships and now is the director of the Westchester Chordsmen. But, you ask, how about the music? Here are historic recordings of 26 of the best tunes you'll ever hear! Songlist: Narration, This Could Be the Start of Something Big, That Tumbled Down Shack in Athlone, Baby, Oh Where Can You Be, The Masquerade Is Over, You Can't Take Dixie From Me, Lover, Come Back to Me, My Honey's Lovin' Arms, That Lonesome Road, The Trolley Song, Scarlet Ribbons, Royal Garden Blues, When You Wish Upon a Star, Judy at the Palace, South, In San Francisco, I Stayed Too Long at the Fair, Where the Black-Eyed Susans Grow, Till There Was You, My Coloring Book, I'll Never Say 'Never Again' Again, Goodbye, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Kerry Dance, Floatin' Down to Cotton Town, I'll Be Seeing You Fretless : All The Things We Are Fretless chose its name to represent the freedom, and challenge, of making music with a fretless instrument, the human voice. These five (3 men, 2 women) multitalented singers sharpened their chops performing with many other jazz and classical groups, particularly those performing in the Boston area; they began singing together in 1999. "All the Things" is a finely-crafted, varied collection of 18 covers ranging from the classical and sacred (Palestrina's "Exultate Deo," Debussy's "Dieu! Ou'il La Fait Bon Regarder!," Durufle's "Ubi Caritas" and "Brahms' Lullaby") and rock (Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance" and the LaBelle hit "Lady Marmalade," to pop and R&B ("James Taylor's "Lonesome Road," Randy Newman's "Short People" and Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears") reggae (Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross") show tunes (Hammerstein's "All the Things You Are" and Gene Krupa's "Some Like It Hot", arranged by Mel Torme) and jazzy blues (the Lambert/Hendricks/Ross arranged "Moanin'"). We particularly enjoyed soprano Anna Choi's solos on "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Tracks of My Tears," "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Lady Marmalade." An impressive, very entertaining debut CD from talented Fretless! Songlist: All The Things You Are, Your Mama Don't Dance, I Can't Make You Love Me, Exultate Deo, Brahams' Lullaby, Short People, It Must Be Me, Tracks Of My Tears, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Dieu! Qu'il La Fait Bon Regarder, Some Like It Hot, Let Them In, Peter, That Lonesome Road, Cry Me A River, Many Rivers To Cross, Ubi Caritas, Moanin', Lady Marmalade Gentlemen's Agreement : Gentlemen's Agreement Though each of the singers who made up the quartet had prior contest singing experience, it is a fact they went from a brand new group to International Champions in just nineteen months. One week after winning they spent three weeks in Viet Nam entertaining the troops for the USO. Part of their vocal appeal, for this reviewer, is the fact that the lead singer, Drayton Justus, had a higher voice than most barbershop leads and the mix of voices has a sweet bell like quality when they hit those ringing chords. They used the finest arrangers of the day such as Renee Craig, Al Rehkop (the tenor of the group), Mo Rector, Greg Backwell, Joni Bescos and Jarmela Speta to whom they pay tribute in song. You'll find twenty-six songs amassing seventy minutes of marvelous music on this recording. Songlist: One of Those Songs, Back in the Old Routine, Shenandoah, Basin Street Blues, Irish Mother, Dames, Spiritual Medley, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Try to Remember, Bacharach Medley, Me, She's Making Eyes At Me, Lucky Old Sun, Good Old Days, Just a Cottage Small, Al RehkopMy Wife the Dancer, Love Story, Ring Out the Bells in Dixieland, Hush, If You Love Me, Really Love Me, Everybody Loves a Lover, My Way, Fiddler Medley, How's Every Little Thing in Dixie?, Kansas City Star, I'll Be Seeing You, Big Brass Bed King's Singers : Love Songs It's no surprise that The King's Singers have recorded a huge number of love songs on all kinds of albums over the last fifty years. Some of these were albums devoted to love songs like Chanson d'amour and Romance du soir. Other albums couldn't help but include music about love, although their theme was actually different. This album, Love Songs, is a chance to revisit some of the ensemble's favorite tracks that they've recorded over the last two decades, compiled from across their back catalogue with Signum Records. The tracks they've chosen have come from five different albums, released between 2008 and 2017. Rather than trying to take in any of the enormous number of classical love songs from the back catalogue, the group wanted to focus on some of the best folk songs, jazz standards, and pop songs that have featured in King's Singers concerts throughout their history. This selection has been curated especially to celebrate the group's favorite recent albums, and to show how rich and varied the tapestry of love songs we have today is. Songlist: When She Loved Me, All of Me, I've Got the World on a String, Tuoll on Mun Kultani, Don't Worry About Me, April Come She Will, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Arrirang, Quand Tu Dors PRéS de Moi, Beyond the Sea, Love Is Here to Stay, I Love My Love, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, I Won't Dance, Helplessly Hoping, At Last, Some Folks' Lives Roll Easy, When I Fall in Love King's Singers : Postcards The King's Singers explore the folk songs and melodies of the world in a new program entitled Postcards. "In our travels we have amassed a wonderful collection of folk songs and popular songs from numerous countries, many of which we use as encores when we visit," said KS, "The influences and sources are extraordinarily far-ranging, and each song has its own local characteristics. To celebrate the diversity of music that we perform and the numerous countries we visit each concert season, we have recorded an album of some of our favorite folk songs from around the world."
