"Night and Day" is perhaps Porter's most popular contribution to the Great American Songbook and has been recorded by dozens of artists.
Fred Astaire introduced "Night and Day" on stage, and his recording of the song was a #1 hit. He performed it again in the 1934 film version of the show, renamed The Gay Divorcee, and it became one of his signature pieces.
There are several accounts on how Porter got inspiration to compose the song. One mentions that he was inspired by Islamic prayer when he visited Morocco. Another popular legend has it he was inspired by the Moorish architecture of the Alcazar Hotel in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
The song was so associated with Porter, that when Hollywood first filmed his life story in 1946, the movie was entitled Night and Day.

Drawing upon the close harmony ensembles of the 1920's - the vaudeville era - for inspiration, they crafted an eclectic mix of the classical and the cabaret in pre-war Germany. The six members, including pianist and arranger Emil Gerhardt, founder Harry Frohmann and bass singer Robert Biberti, were the pop stars of their era, and even toured America and Europe, before they were forced to disband by the Nazi government. These twenty-five tracks comprise the best-known songs in the Harmonists repetoire, including the memorable "Creole Love Call," (re-created later by England's King's Singers on their tribute album), "Tea For Two" and Rossini's "Barber Of Seville Overture." Songlist: Creole Love Call, Muss I' Denn Zum Stadtle Dinaus, Perpetuum Mobile, Ein Bisschen Leichtsinn Kann Nicht Schaden, Tea For Two, Humoreske, Liebling, Mein Herz, Congo Lullaby, Wenn Die Sonja Russisch Tanzt, Whispering, An Der Schonen Blauen Donau, Das Alte Spinnrad, The Barber Of Seville Overture, Puppenhochzeit, Am Brunnen Vor Dem Tore, Barcarolle, Holzhackerlied, Ich Traum' Von Eine Marchennacht, In Stiller Nacht, Night and Day, Sah Ein Knab' Ein Roslein' Steh'n, Hein Spielt Abends So Schon Auf Dem Schifferklavier, Komm Im Traum, Heute Nacht Oder Nie, Auf Wiederseh'n, My Dear Comedian Harmonists : Comedian Harmonists If you have ever been attracted to the instrumental vocalizations of anyone, The Kings Singers, The Swingle Singers, The Mills Brothers, or the Real Group to name a few, they are treading in the footsteps of the Comedian Harmonists who starred in twelve films and sold millions of records before they were suppressed by Hitler and banned from performing. Founded in 1927, they peaked in 1930-1932 before their three Jewish members became the focus of Nazi hatred. Delightful, joyous interpretations of classical and popular standards of the day are the fare of the quintet. A light piano accompaniment is provided by the sixth member who was also the arranger. This recording contains nearly 70 minutes of music from old 78 rpm records. Fabulous!! Songlist: Daisy (You're Driving Me Crazy), The Last Roundup, Happy Days Are Here Again, Creole Love Call, Veroninka, The Spring Is Here, Night and Day, My Little Green Cactus, Tea For Two, Can You Whistle, Johanna?, Where Is My Baby?, Beautiful Lisa, In A Shady Grove, The Village, Somewhere In The World Copley Cats : Landing On Our Feet An eleven member women's ensemble hailing from the Boston area who met while singing in college, the group could be loosely classified as contemporary, but also sing classic pop ("Walk on By") and jazz standards ("Satin Doll" and "Night and Day"). Several of their songs were arranged by Deke Sharon, including "Time and Tide," and "Passionate Kisses." A variety of members take turns on lead, and are consistently and solidly supported by this sorority of voices; Songlist: Passionate Kisses, Song For The Asking, Time And Tide, American Tune, Is That The Way You Look?, Mary Don't You Weep, Night and Day, Satin Doll, Until You Come Back To Me, Walk On By, The Sound Of Music, Heart's Desire, Final Frontier Frommermann : Music of the Comedian Harmonists he Dutch group Frommermann is named after Harry Frommermann, who in 1927 founded the Comedian Harmonists. This German ensemble, comprised of five singers and a pianist, was in the late twenties and early thirties of the last century a huge sensation. The Comedian Harmonists were namely renowned for their broad variety of vocal styles and the fine sense of comedy with which they performed close harmony music. Within a short period they became international celebrities with concerts in Europe and the United States. In 1935 the Comedian Harmonists were forced by the Nazis to disband, silencing this ensemble for eternity. Around Christmas 2004, at the request of the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, Marcel Reijans selected a group of fellow singers and a pianist who shared his love for the music of the Comedian Harmonists. With this group of men, each busy with national and international careers, he made Broken Silence, a tribute to the Comedian Harmonists. With this theater program Frommermann broke the silence that was imposed on the Comedian Harmonists and their music gained a voice again in the Netherlands. The three concerts in the 2005 Grachtenfestival were a great success. The numerous positive reactions from the public and press lead immediately to an invitation to perform at the annual Koninginneconcert (Queens Concert) at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. This concert, which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, the royal family and many esteemed guests, was also received with much acclaim. The NPS (Netherlands Public Broadcasting Service) made a documentary and registration of the concert, which was broadcasted nationwide on Koninginnedag (Queens Day) 2006 Songlist: Veronika, Der Lenz Ist Da, Eine Kleine Fruhlingsweise, Overture To Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, Mein Kleiner Gruner Kaktus, Stormy Weather, Ali Baba, In Einem Kuhlen Grunde, Wenn Ich Vergnugt Bin, Wir Sind von Kopf Bis Fub Auf Liebe Eingestellt, Schone Isabella Aus Kastilien, Morgen Mub Ich Fort von Hier, Wochenend Und Sonnenschein, Night and Day, When Yumba Plays the Rhumba On the Tuba, Kannst Du Pfeifen Johanna?, Guter Mond Du Gehst So Stille, Holzhackerlied, Gitarren Spielt Auf, Leb' Wohl, Gute Reise Hudson Shad : Spawn Song Hudson Shad is an American group that was inspired by the German Comedian Harmonists, who were formed in Berlin, 1927. The First World War over, the cabaret tradition flourishes and the city is a locus of developing talent. The Comedian Harmonists performs until 1935, when, due to persecution of the three Jewish members under the Nazi Party, they are forced to disband. Hudson Shad's poignant "Liebeslied," sung in German, is all that much more evocative, its sentiment in horrible contrast to the terrible events to follow. The traditional "Callin' My Children Home" showcases the group's close harmonies and tight blend, "My Little Green Cactus" is a naughty paean to something other than succulents, if we know anything at all! Songlist: Wie War's Mal Mit Lissaben?, Callin' My Children Home, My Little Green Cactus, Stormy Weather, Whispering, Liebesleid, Night and Day, Camp Meeting, Creole Love Call, Baby, Wedding Of The Painted Doll, Tea For Two, A Little Spring Melody, Uncle Bumba, Auf Wiederseh'n King's Singers : A Tribute To The Comedian Harmonists How appropriate that the King's Singers would pay tribute to the seminal pre-world War II German group who had such an influence on the development of a cappella. The Harmonists, who were ultimately forced to disband by the Nazi government, were a six-member ensemble (five voices and a pianist) who were at the vanguard of the cabaret vogue of pre-war Berlin. Their set comprised jazz standards, German lied, classical pieces and a hearty portion of silliness ("My Little Green Cactus," "Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier." ). The British King's Singers have lovingly selected sixteen songs from the Harmonists' repetoire, which they in turn arranged for themselves, resulting in a happy marriage of both. "Overture from 'Il Barbiere Di Siviglia'" is a clue to the inspiration of the Swingle Singers; "Tea for Two" is nothing like the original, but is slowed to ballad tempo, with a host of jazzy chord voicings-a sublime rendition! Songlist: Veronika, der Lenz its da, Liebling, Mein Herz Lsst Dich Grossen, Night and Day, Mein Kleiner Groner Kaktus, Creole Love Call, Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier, Stormy Weather, Das ist die Liebe der Matrosen, Ouvet re zu/Overture from the Barber of Seville, Wenn der Wind Weht Uber das Meer, Flight of the Bumblebee, The Donkey Serenade, Gitarren Spielt Auf, Tea For Two, Du armes girl vom Chor, Wochenhund und Sonnenschein King's Singers : Great American Songbook Around the time The King's Singers was starting up, one of the most productive periods of songwriting in history was coming to a close in America, starting with composers such as Gershwin, Kern, Berlin and Porter in the early 1920s, and continuing through to the early 1960s. In this new 2-CD studio recording - featuring brand new a cappella arrangements by jazz composer and arranger Alexander L'Estrange, and swing-orchestra performances with the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra - The King's Singers bring their own unique performance style to this wonderful music. Songlist: I've Got the World on a String, Begin the Beguine, I've Got You Under My Skin, It's De-Lovely, Night and Day, Let's Misbehave, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, I Won't Dance, Cry Me a River, Beyond the Sea, When I Fall in Love, Cheek to Cheek, My Funny Valentine, The Lady is a Tramp, The Best Is Yet To Come, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, At Last m-pact : m-pact One of our favorite groups on the planet from the first time we saw them on the stage of the Harmony Sweeps Finals, easily taking Audience Favorite and the National Championship, (then 5-man, now 6) jazz-pop m-pact continues to push the a cappella envelope with their unique, amazing sound. "m-pact," their 5th recording, was recorded at m-pact studios in LA, and is proudly distributed exclusively by Primarily A Cappella Records. The tagline on "m-pact," "experience the voice," refers to the pure, sumptuous tenor/soprano of Britt Quentin, whose creative arrangements, production and even engineering are evident on all 14 tracks. Especially fine are his arrangements that reinvent classics such as Cole Porter's "Night and Day," Rogers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things," "Over the Rainbow," Lerner & Lowe's "Almost Like Being In Love," "Bluesette," the Four Tops' "Baby I Need Your Loving," and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life." The opening cut is "You Need to Know," a sassy, walking-jazz original by Britt, who also shines on lead. He also wrote (or co-wrote) and sings lead on the mellow finger-snapper "I Found A Love In You" and vocal percussion gem "I Thought You Cared For Me." Trist, Marco, Jake, Rudy and Jeff and their own incredible vocal talents to a smooth, sophisticated recording that surprises and touches on many levels, that we found ourselves replaying again and again to fully appreciate-in short, a masterpiece! Songlist: You Need To Know, Have A Talk with God, I Found A Love In You, Night and Day, I Thought You Cared For Me, Jesus To A Child, My Favorite Things, Northeast Wind, Over The Rainbow, Almost Like Being In Love, Bluesette, Baby I Need Your Loving, What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life?, Northwest Passage m-pact : Live At The Triple Door A live recording of m-pact, one of our favorite pop/jazz vocal ensembles of all time, at Seattle's Triple Door-what a treat!! Since being named 1996-97 Harmony Sweeps champs and Audience Favorite, m-pact has been wowing appreciative audiences all over the world, including several memorable appearances at the West Coast Summit. Finally, the signature sound and eclectic musical tastes of this internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning vocal sensation are down on plastic. The song selection dances from soaring soul like a marvelous arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish," "Ain't Nobody," "Still the One" and Willie Dixon's "29 Ways;" and sophisticated jazz like Miles Davis' "All Blues" and the salsa scattish "Northeast Wind;" to fresh pop originals like "u nee 2 no" and the jazzy "found a love in you," written by brilliant alto lead Britt Quentin. The disco tune "Boogie Oogie Oogie" becomes a vocal percussion showcase for Trist Curless' flawless beat-box, and "If We Try" highlights Britt's pure, soaring, almost unbelievable range, as does a jazz interpretation of Cole Porter's "Night and Day." "Live" continues with the jazzy, ultra-hip "What If We Was Cool," a surprising jazz interpretation of the pop anthem "Higher and Higher," and closes with an incongruous, but lovely cover of Bach's "How Shall I Fitly Greet Thee." Everyone who has had the one-of-a-kind experience of seeing and hearing m-pact live, and knows what a gift that is, will appreciate what has been captured on these two discs. Brilliant, stunning, and highly recommended! Songlist: Boogie Boogie Oogie, Ain't Nobody, Somebody Love Me, What If We Was Cool, If We Try, Night and Day, All Blues, Still The One, Found A Love In You, 29 Ways, Higher and Higher The Real Group : Debut This album is the first by The Real Group (recorded in 1987) as you might suspect from the title. It was recorded with two microphones straight to a two-track tape deck with no mix down. Amazing! They are already so good you won't realize that fact by the most critical listening. What dynamic balance! The original release was a vinyl edition of 2500. In 1995 that early recording was rereleased on cd and given the appropriate title, Debut. Of the thirteen tunes, three are sung in Swedish, while the rest are the types of familiar covers that we've come to expect, "All Of Me," "Misty," "Li'l Darlin'," "Night And Day," "As Time Goes By," "My Romance" and "Who Put The Bomp," among others. It's a must for anyone who is following the career of this extraordinary group. Songlist: All of Me, Misty, Joy Spring, Coffee Calls For A Cigarette, Medgon Knsliga Fr Grnt, Blues For Alice, Li'l Darlin, Night and Day, As Time Goes By, Båtlåt, My Romance, Vårsång, Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp Ba Bomp Ba Bomp) The Real Group : Live In Stockholm Wah-wah-wa-wa-wahao, and so we dive into the beginning of "Splanky," that classic of wordless scat with the driving jazz chords which usually need the accompaniment of a big band to be so effective. Yow! Ok, ok, lets quiet it down with the subtle vocal intertwining of "When I Fall In Love." And now give them a medium tempo, combo feeling, with "Good Bait." Thus a great performance takes the audience though successive tempo changes, moods, and by a recording lets those of us who never had the chance to see the live Real Group experience that. They are so polished that it is easy to forget this is live until the end of each song reminds us of the audience. Every Real Group fan should have this one.? Songlist: Splanky, When I Fall In Love, Good Bait, Lil darlin', There Will Never Be Another You, Night and Day, Waltz For Debby, 'Round Midnight, I've Found A New Baby, Come Sunday, Strawberry Fields Forever, Den Lysnande Maria Sam Rogers : 100% Organic Human Voice How exactly does he do it? Sam Rogers has, over relatively a few years, developed an impressive reputation as being one of the top vocal percussionist/beatboxer in the country. His unique talent, plus many years studying with some of the top vocal jazz coaches such as Phil Mattson and Michelle Weir, has developed his own unique style. Sam creates all kinds of sounds using just his voice without much use of electronic effects (unlike many others) but rather from his ability to create a whole array of fascinating sounds which he uses to great effect in these songs. The 3-man, 2-women Axidentals perform with a very hot 5-piece jazz ensemble, but they also have several fine a cappella cuts on "Hot XI," including Rodgers & Hart's "My Heart Stood Still," Mark Murphy's "Gone," "It Don't Mean a Thing," and Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday." All woman jazz quartet Sus 4 also perform "Invitation" and "Love for Sale" with 5-piece jazz accompaniment. Two man, 3 woman a cappella jazz ensemble Et Cetera's "Paradise," "Old Man River" and a cover of the Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces" are other favorites. Pete's arrangement of this Cole Porter standard is magnificent. A rhythmic Latin pulse dominates the accompaniment with smooth, flowing vocals creating a magical contrast. Captivating!
Arranger: Pete Schmutte | Composer: Cole Porter
Two contrasting moods are explored in this short setting that gives young singers a chance to develop a full, free and flexible sound. Includes two movements: Moon, Are You Out There? and Fine Day.
Composer: Cole Porter
Hailed by many as Porter's greatest contribution to the Great American Songbook, "Night and Day" uses a harmonic structure that broke all the rules found in other popular songs from the 1930s. Your accompanist will really shine on this one!
