The song began life in 1930 as a nine-bar phrase with the working title "There's No Stopping Me Now". Its title phrase "Nice work if you can get it" came from an English magazine. It was one of nine songs George Gershwin wrote for the movie A Damsel in Distress in which it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters. The song was published in 1937.
The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film.[2] Early chart versions were by Shep Fields, Teddy Wilson with Billie Holiday, Fred Astaire, Maxine Sullivan, and The Andrews Sisters.[3] The song was recorded by many jazz singers and adopted by bebop instrumentalists; Jerry Newman recorded pianist Thelonious Monk performing the tune in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse, a nightclub closely connected with early bebop, and he subsequently recorded it several times. Other jazz pianists who have recorded the tune include Art Tatum in 1949, Erroll Garner in 1968, and Jessica Williams in 1992.
A version of this song was used during the opening credits of the 1995 to 1998 CBS sitcom Cybill, starring Cybill Shepherd, who performed the song. The song was included in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Crazy for You and lent its name to the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It.

This recording is special because it encompasses their early years, 1937-1940; of course it includes "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," which established their reputation and went to number #1, but also wonderful nostalgia such as "Ciribiribin," with Bing Crosby on lead, "I Love You Too Much," "Pagan Love Song" and so many more - twenty-two songs in all, too many to describe here. Many are accompanied by Vic Schoen, their longtime bandleader and arranger. The quality is still terrific and hasn't tarnished with age in the least. Songlist: Beat Me Dadd Eight to the Bar, The Cock-Eyed Mayor of Kaunakakai, Beer Barrel Polka, Bei Mir Bist Du Shon, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Rhumboogie, I Love You Too Much, The Ferryboat Serenade, Well All Right, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Ciribiribin (with Bing Crosby), One Two Three O'Leary, Why Talk About Love, You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer, From the Land of the Sky Blue Water, Pagan Love Song, Hold Tight, Long Time No See, OOOOO-Oh Boom, Short'nin' Bread, Let's Have Another One, I Want My Mama Barbershop Harmony Society : Top Choruses 2004 Louisville KY also, of course, hosted the 2004 SPEBSQSA International Chorus Competition, which in terms of shear vocal power, is unmatched on this planet! The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile." A powerful, amazing collection! Songlist: I Have Dreamed, Make Them Hear You, medley: Comptown Raves/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals, Summertime, The Sunshine Of Your Smile, When It's Night Time To Dixieland, My Foolish Heart, Medley: I Used To Love You/There'll Be Some Changes Made/Five Foot Two, Eyes, Of Blue/Yes Sir, That's My Baby, So Long, mother, Blues In The Night, You'll Never Know, Medley: how Do I Get Outta This Chicken Outfit/Charleston/Stormy Weather, Auld Lang Syne, Button up Your Overcoat, How Deep Is The Ocean, Medley: Everybody Step/Alexander's Ragtime Band, Girls Medley: Margie/No No Nora/Ma Blushin' Rosie, Medley: Get Out And Get Under The Moon/Shine on Harvest Moon, Nice Work If You Can Get It, On The Sunny Side of the Street, If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby Hi-Lo's : Clap Yo' Hands Comprising two of their records from the 1950's-1954's "I Presume" and 1958's "In Stereo"-"Clap Yo' Hands" captures the close harmony sound of the Hi-Lo's, who defined the vocal jazz of their era. The playground for the talents of the brilliant arranger Gene Puerling, who went on to form the Singers Unlimited, the Hi-Lo's toured with theJudy Garland show and sang with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. These tracks are orchestrated (by Frank Comstock, who backed the group on many early recordings) and include wonderful standards such as "Summertime," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." This is a jubilant recording that is alive with the joy of music. We have it on good authority that "Clap Yo' Hands" includes some of the group's favorite songs. Songlist: Clap Yo' Hands, Long Ave and Far Away, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Shadow Waltz, Chinatown, My Chinatown, Too Young for the Blues, Summertime, You Took Advantage of Me, Birth of the Blues, Surrey With the Fringe on Top, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Jeepers Creepers, I Thought About You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Stars Fell on Alabama, Rockin' Chair Hi-Lo's : Under Glass / I Presume A spate of Hi-Lo's albums have been recently released on CD, but this may be the most auspicious re-emergence yet: the Hi-lo's first two records, paired up for over an hour's worth of great listening. Though some of the cuts can be found on other recordings, the a cappella "Molly Malone" and "Through The Years" aren't available anywhere else, and the remarkable harmonizations that were Gene Puerling's unique artistry are gloriously displayed in a riot of tonal color. Also, "Georgia On My Mind," and "They Don't Believe Me," from their first 1953 recording session for Trend, are included; the latter was on the previously available "Nice Work If You Can Get It" CD, which has since been discontinued. Anyway, suffice it to say, that among the vocal harmony groups of the 1950's, the Hi-lo's were much imitated, but never duplicated, and their appeal is timeless. Mostly accompanied, with orchestrations by frequent music director Frank Comstock. Songlist: Summertime, The Birth Of The Blues, Skylark, Through The Years, Shadow Waltz, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Chinatown, My Chinatown, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, In The Blue Of The Evening, Molly Malone, You're the Top, Long Ago And Far Away, Rockin' Chair, Stars Fell On Alabama, Nice Work If You Can Get It, I Thought About You, This Is The Night, Too Young For The Blues, Jeepers Creepers, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Shoeless Joe From Hannibal Mo, They Didn't Believe Me, Georgia On My Mind Hi-Lo's : A Musical Thrill A musical thrill indeed! Vocal jazz at its best with the arrangements of the genius himself Gene Puerling. Songlist: June In July, Little White Lies, I Don't Want To Cry Anymore, She's Funny That Way, Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets), Island Of Desire, You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me, Fools Rush In, Have You Met Miss Jones, Where Are You, You Can't Hardly Get There Any More, Rockin' Chair, Stars Fell On Alabama, Nice Work If You Can Get It, I Thought About You, This Is The Night, Too Young For The Blues, Jeepers Creepers, Speak Low, Button Up Your Overcoat, Put Your Dreams Away, Shoeless Joe, They Didn't Believe Me, Peg O' My Heart, My Baby Just Cares For Me, Georgia On My Mind, Clap Yo' Hands, Mam'Selle, Lulu's Back In Town, Indian Summer, and more High Society : Celebrating High Society - A Musical Journey Legendary foursome High Society's (Connie Noble, Kim Hulbert, Sandy Shelver and Pat Vozza) being named Sweet Adelines International Quartet Champions in 1976 led to a long, wonderful career, with concerts all over North America, a USO Tour and four top-selling albums, "High Society," "On the Road Again," "By Design" and "Fascinatin'." For all their loyal fans over the years, and for those who have never had the chance to savor the buttery harmonies, sweet leads and ringing, hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck-tingling held chords of one of Sweet Adelines' all-time great champions, we would highly recommend "Celebrating High Society." A 2-CD collection of 51 tunes, "Celebrating" leaves none of the good stuff out, including every song on their four best-selling albums! All of our favorites, "Take Me to the Land of Jazz," "Get Happy," "Top Hat Medley," "Jump Shout Boogie," "Tin Roof Boogie," "Java Jive," "In My Life," "Crazy," "Fred Astaire Medley," "Lazy River," "Lullaby of Birdland"... they're all here. Treat yourself to a tasty banquet of very Sweet Adelines! Having been influenced by the Boswell Sisters, they sought fame and fortune in the early thirties, and began singing with bandleader Horace Heidt. Their success continued into the forties and fifties, as contemporaries of the Andrews and McGuire Sisters, and even into the 1960's, when they had their own television program, "The King Family Show." With their orchestra, conducted by Frank DeVol, the girls produced a slew of close harmony classics, from the wistful ballad, as in "The Day You Came Along" and "I Don't Know Why," to the cheerful "Cielito Linda," "You Made Me Love You" and "Pagan Love Song"; and who could forget "When The Swallows Came Back To Capistrano"? What a trip down memory lane!
