This book is in a traditional jazz format designed for improvising accompaniments, with melody line, lyrics and chords in a handwritten music engraving style. Traditional chord changes are also included, along with the alternative chords in Steve Rawlins' creative arrangements. Keys in the Women's Edition are in a generally lower range, as is customary for this style of music. The Men's Edition keys are in a medium range. Audio is accessed online using the unique code inside the book and can be streamed or downloaded. Mt. Sac's dynamic ensemble Singcopation, founded in 1997 by Director of Choral Activities Bruce Rogers, consists of 12 auditioned male and female student vocal jazz specialists. These exceptional singers have taken home a variety of trophies from vocal jazz competitions, been named "Most Outstanding College Vocal Jazz Group in the Country" by Downbeat. On the 14 generally accompanied (Piano, Drums & Bass) tunes of "Drive," Singcopation shows us a level of sophistication and polish rarely found at the college level. Particularly fine are Steve Allen's "This Could be the Start of Something Big," the scatty, salsa-flavored "Virou Areia," the sexy, silly, nearly a cappella "I Feel So Smoochie," a very cool arrangement of "Nature Boy," Bobby McFerrin's sweet a cappella (of course) title tune, a moody cover of Lennon/McCartney's "In My Life," John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice," a smooth, rhythmic cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado," and very nice vocal percussion on the a cappella "Virtual Insanity." We are big fans of Singcopation, and enjoyed every cut of "Drive!"

"Live music is a powerful thing" says the opening sentence of this recording's liner notes and for The Real Group it is especially true. Recorded in April 2013 at the intimate jazz club Billboard Live Club in Osaka and Tokyo, this superb recording showcases the stunning voices and sublime arrangements that make the Real Group one of the very best in the business. Some of the songs on the recording have been in their repertoire for awhile but have never been recorded before by current group members Emma and Morton. They bring a fresh new interpretation of the material and its wonderful to hear how these old favorites have developed. There is also plenty of new material such as "Lucky Luke", the Daft Punk song "Harder Better Faster Stronger", the swingin' "Gee! Mine or Mozart's?" and Michael Jackson's "Bad". This reviewer has had the great pleasure of hearing the Real Group perform live and this recording helps relive the experience and for those of you who have not heard them live now here's your chance. The physical CD comes with a lovely color booklet chock full of photos and musings from the group members.

Ro Sham Bo : It's Not Over   

Berkeley, CA's three man, three woman a cappella jazz ensemble Ro Sham Bo, who impressed us with a strong set at the '06 Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional (winning Best Original Arrangement and 2nd place overall), bring us this impressive debut CD of 12 songs. The salsa favorite "Mas Que Nada" starts the program, the brilliantly arranged "Nature Boy," the silly "Barney is the Devil," jazzy "Why Haven't I Heard From You," "Greasy Granny" and "It's Over," the bluenote, scattish "Anthopology," the Blues standard "God Bless the Child," the moody "Interlude" and the striking bluenote arrangement of "Ballgame," which was a special request that the group sang only one time, are favorites. "It's not over" is a beautifully selected, arranged and performed debut by this talented mixed Bay Area sextet!

It doesn't get any better than this! After years of being available only on the box set here is a 2 CD release of all 33 a cappella recordings (not including Christmas) of quite probably the best vocal jazz group ever. The arrangements of Gene Puerling are simply exquisite and his ability to transform a song to completely new heights is astounding. We carry many thousands of a cappella CDs and this release is, in our opinion, the most essential CD for the collection of any serious fan of a cappella music!

Vocation : Vocation   

Three men, three women sextet Vocation was formed in 1999 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden,and were helped by conductor Lone Larsen in shaping their unique sound. Reviewers have compared them to a heady list - the Real Group, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer and the New York Voices. Playing regularily on Swedish radio and TV, Vocation won "Choice of the Audience Award" at the International Vocal Group Fest in Tilburg, Holland in 2002. Eleven songs, a few accompanied by jazz band, eight in English: Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Without a Song," Johnny Mercer's "I Remember You" and "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Gee Baby ain't I Good to You?," plus the a cappella "Almost Like Being in Love," "Not Like This" and "Nature Boy." There's also three very nice pieces in Swedish, particularly "Nar Charlie ar fudd," with music by Hoagy Carmichael, we would guess that "Charlie" refers to jazz great Charlie Parker. The sound is bright and hot, the English flawless, and Vocation swims easily in the company of MT, NY Voices, Real Group and other big fishes in the vocal jazz school. A very impressive and enjoyable debut CD!
