Greg Gilpin : Partner Songs for the Developing Choir The developing choir is a unique ensemble and ranges in size from many to just a few, in age from younger to older and from the experienced to brand new singers. Both male and female are a part of these groups with ever-changing vocal challenges. Educators who teach this wide group of musicians know there is a need for many tools of repertoire that build bridges to the art of choral singing. Partner Songs for the Developing Choir is designed to help teach harmonic singing through sophisticated melodies and distinguished texts, appealing to singers from upper elementary through middle school and early high school, and can even continue for the less-experienced or smaller adult choir. Some of the choral works are very basic in form and melodic writing, while others might include a bridge or B section or more intricate melodies, expanding the harmonic learning. Modelled on the precedent of A Garland For The Queen (1953), nine British composers, including Paul McCartney, Richard Rodney Bennett, John Rutter and John Tavener, have been inspired to compose music of considerable expressiveness and beauty. The anthology shows the power of music to provide hope to those who are suffering from ill health. Songlist: Silence & Music, Prayer For the Healing Of the Sick, Water lilies, Musica Dei Donum, The Doorway of the Dawn, Nova, I Dream'd, Farewell, The Filght Of the Swan, A Good-Night Joyful Company Of Singers : A Garland For Linda In every way imaginable, this is an extraordinarily moving recording. A Garland for Linda arose from Paul McCartney's desire to help find a cure for cancer while creating that support by composition of life enhancing music. His goal found precedent in "a Garland for the Queen" from 1953 when ten leading British composers, including Vaughan Williams, contributed new works as a musical celebration of the coronation. This celebration is of the life of Linda McCartney. The recording opens with one piece from the earlier "Garland," "Silence and Music" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This remarkable recording then has new works by John Tavener, Judith Bingham, John Rutter, David Matthews, Paul McCartney, Roxanna Panufnik, Michael Berkeley, Giles Swayne, and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. It is a glorious 'Who's Who' of contemporary British composers. Songlist: Silence & Music, Prayer For the Healing Of the Sick, Water lilies, Musica Dei Donum, The Doorway of the Dawn, Nova, I Dream'd, Farewell, The Filght Of the Swan, A Good-Night Nordic Chamber Choir : John Rutter Conductor and composer John Rutter has worked in many facets of music, but is best known for his work in the choral realm. On this recording his work is interpreted by the Nordic Chamber Choir led by Nicol Matt. This dynamic CD shows the stylistic and subject variety found in Rutter's music. The first set of five sacred pieces includes the amazingly beautiful wedding song, "I my Best-Beloved's am," which combines sacred Latin texts with an English love poem, the jubilant "Cantate Domino" and virtuosic "Deck the hall." The set of Birthday Madrigals, written for jazz pianist George Shearing combine madrigal era texts in very jazzy settings, three of them include double-bass. The recording is rounded out with five settings of traditional songs and five childhood lyrics. Songlist: Five sacred Pieces:, I my Best Beloved's am, Cantate Domino, Musica Dei Donum, Deck the Hall, Hymn to the Creator of Light, Birthday Madrigals:, It was a lover and his lass, Draw on, sweet night, Come live with me, My true love hath my heart, When daisies pied, Five traditional Songs:, The girl I left behind me, O waly, waly, The British Grenadiers, Golden slumbers, Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron, Five Childhood Lyrics:, Monday's child, The Owl and the Pussy-Cat, Windy nights, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Sing A Song Of Sixpence |
