Here for the first time collected in one handsome volume are a dozen of the finest, with texts from both the biblical and non-liturgical. This anthology from a lifetime's output is convincing proof of a composer who still has much new to say in this most demanding medium. Conducted by the composer, John Rutter: A Song in Season ranges across the church's year, incorporating music for Christmas, Epiphany, Pentecost, Easter and Harvest. The 2010 Concordia Christmas Concert, "Out of Darkness + Let Your Light Shine," begins with the recognition that darkness, grief and sorrow touch all of our lives but through the darkness is the promise of light, healing light, radiant light that moves us forward out of darkness into God's marvelous light. They have standards in their choice of music as in their manner of performance, and everything they have undertaken in their recordings has been in a tradition of good workmanship and good taste. This present programme, with its alternation of works by Howells and Vaughan Williams, illustrates the individuality of both composers as well as the shared possession of a culture deeply loved and richly imbued. All are finely caught in these performances, not least the aeroplanes in Harry Bickett's imaginative registration and skilful playing. Choral tone, the work of soloists drawn from the choir, recorded sound, written presentation, all are admirable features of a highly recommendable disc. Songlist: Prayer to the Father of Heaven, A Sequence for St Michael, A Vision of Aeroplanes, The House of the Mind, Lord, Thou hast been our Refuge, Requiem:, I Salvator mundi, II Psalm 23, III Requiem aeternam (1), IV Psalm 121, V Requiem aeternam (2), VI I heard a voice from heaven St John's College Choir, Cambridge : Bairstow - Choral Music David Hill's final recording with St John's features music by Edward Bairstow. The diverse programme includes well known pieces such as Let all mortal flesh and Jesu the very thought of thee. The release sees the debut recording of Five Poems of the Spirit, for which the Choir were joined by internationally acclaimed baritone Roderick Williams and the Britten Sinfonia.
