Founded way back in 1963 in St. Charles, MO, The 160-strong Ambassadors of Harmony are one of the best, most entertaining men's Barbershop choruses in the world, and they have the Gold necklaces to prove it: SPEBSQSA (Barbershop Harmony Society) Gold in 2004 and 2009! We can tell by their costumes, expressions and wonderful music that (1) these gentlemen are having big fun up there on stage in international competition, and (2) they can sing their collective tails off! We think we can call "Oh What a Day" a best-of collection, mainly because it includes "Seventy-Six Trombones," the Merideth Willson tune which led off their Gold-winning set in July, 2009, but also because every one of these cuts is a stone winner. "America," the sassy Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein hit from "West Side Story," "Friend Like Me," Howard Ashman/Alan Menken's song from "Aladdin," a cover of the traditional Scottish Air "Loch Lomond" that could break your heart, the wonderfully dramatic theme song from "Man of La Mancha," Ira and George Gershwin's sweet "Love Walked In," the Spanky and Our Gang hit "Lazy Day," Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows," Merle Kilgore/June Carter's Johnny Cash hit "Ring of Fire," and the Edith Piaf hit "If You Love Me, Really Love Me (Hymne a L'Amour)"-these are some of our favorite songs of all time, and the A of H nail every one of them. That's entertainment! Songlist: America, Friend Like Me, They Didn't Believe Me, Fit as a Fiddle, Loch Lomond, Man of La Mancha, Love Walked In, Lazy Days, God Only Knows, Ring of Fire, If You Love Me, Seventy Six Trombones Cabinet Shuffle : In Cambridge... Again! British mixed sextet (2 women, 4 men) Cabinet Shuffle has been singing top-drawer a cappella in many of the classiest venues in England, for a Who's Who of corporate and professional clients. With clean, tight harmonies and sweet leads reminiscent of the Swingles and Manhattan Transfer, and a varied repertoire from Bach to the Beatles and Josquin to Jazz, the Shuffle are crowd-pleasers extraordinaire! Their recordings (their first, the excellent "It Don't Mean A Thing," "Cambridge" is #2) are equally crisp, elegant and entertaining. Beginning with two winners, "New York" and the heart-tugger "Loch Lomond," we are then treated to a vocal feast: the traditional Italian tune "Bella Calou," Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and "The Longest Time," Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me," Harold Arlen's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Bring Him Home," John Denver's "Perhaps Love," and Lerner and Loewe's "I Could Have Danced All Night" are all delightful. It's all good, and we think that this talented group is ready for a much wider audience and some larger venues, especially over here "across the pond!" Songlist: New York, Loch Lomond, The Three Ravens, Malaguena, Bella Caiou, Le Baylere, And So It Goes, Pavane, A Nightinsgale Sang In Berkeley Square, Someone To Watch Over Me, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I Won't Send Roses, I Dreamed A Dream, Bring Him Home, I Could Have Danced All Night, The Longest Time, Chansom d'Amour, Perhaps Love, If You Leave Me Now, Come FLy With Me Cantus : Vagabond This young male ensemble from the great choral-producing regions of Minnesota, under the artistic direction of Erik Lichte, bring a fresh elegance and vitality to their repetoire. Cantus incorporates a wide variety of influences from across the globe. A contemporary setting of the Latin "Veni Creator Spiritus," is followed by three similar works, dating from Rennaissance or pre-Rennaissance. Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Vagabond" is musically itinerant, restlessly drifting between tonalities. The melancholy "This Ol' Hammer," an African-American work song, has a solo lead on the verses, while the chorus echoes key phrases in assent; the arrangement manipulates the placement and number of voices throughout, adding and subtracting for variety and dynamic range. "One by One" is Zulu - sung in Zulu - with whoops and caterwauling, all very tuneful, of course. It's a jubilant finale. Songlist: Veni Creator Spiritus, Cantate Domino, The Pauperum Refugium, O Filii Et Finliae, Alleluia, Amen, The Vagabond, Two Settings Of Rupert Brooke, - Oh! Love, - The Hill, Break, Break, Break, Loch Lomond, Doraredansen, Mouth Music, Bullgine Run, This Ol' Hammer, In His Care-O, One By One Cantus : Let Your Voice Be Heard Cantus is a professional, 12-male vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to exalting the human spirit through the performance of innovative and engaging musical programs. Their focus is not only on singing the finest literature of the past but also to present new music created by group members or commissioned for the group. People may experience them through concerts, recordings, clinics and new musical scores. The 19 songs on "Let Your Voice" are an exciting mix: the title tune (African Jazz, with non-vocal percussion, which is present on other tracks),"Dravidian Dithyramb" (Indian Dance Music), "El Yivneh Hagalil" (Hebrew Folk Song), and "What Shall We Do the Drunken Sailor" (English Sea Shanty), share CD space with "Mata Del Anima Sola," a Venezuelan Joropo, "Shen Khar Venakhi (Georgian Wedding Song), "K'ang-ting Love Song" (Chinese Folk Song) and "Were You There" (African-American Spiritual). All songs feature innovative arrangements and often breathtaking spirit and energy. A rousing, powerful CD from an amazing, talented ensemble. Songlist: Let Your Voice Be Heard, Dravidian Dithyramb, El Yivneh Hagalil, Nukapianguaq, Dulaman, What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor, Songs from Matengo Folktales, Mata del Anima Sola, Shen Khar Venakhi, K'ang-ting Love Song, She Moved Through the Fair, Domaredansen, Loch Lomond, Danny Boy, Shenandoah, Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder, Were You There?, One By One, Let Your Voice Be Heard Chor Leoni : Goin' Home "Goin' Home is Chor Leoni's sixth CD - each one we rave about, and each one is better than the last! Internationally acclaimed conductor Diane Loomer's flawless direction and song selection keep the Vancouver, BC-based all-male choir going in the right direction. As Canada is composed of citizens from every corner of the world, the object of "Goin'" was to collect and present folk songs from many of these countries, in the hope that CL's audience would experience "the bittersweet tightness in the throat and tear in the eye that only comes when you are goin' home." 18 richly textured a cappella songs, beginning with 3 dramatic Ainu folk tunes, "Bear Festival," "Piraka" and "Whale Festival," and continuing with "Fenyang Ge" and "Minoi, Minoi," Anhui and Samoan folk songs, respectively. Following are the Lapp folk song, "Dalvi duoddar luohti," and one of the best covers of the Zulu tune "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" we've heard. German, English, Irish, Estonian, and Welsh folk songs delight the crowd (this is a live performance, although the audience is almost edited out). A couple of nice American songs, the Appalachian folk song "Bright Morning Star" and "Shenandoah," precede the title tune by Antonin Dvorak, the Scottish tune "Loch Lomond" and "Christmas Angel." Sweet harmonies and what we can only call "personality" pour forth from CL like water from a Canadian stream. Recommended! Songlist: Three Folk Songs, Bear Festival, Pirika, Pirika, Whale Festival, Fengyang Ge, Minoi, Minoi, Dalvi duoddar luohti, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Jing-ga-lye-ah, Gaudeamus igitur, Drink to my only with thine eyes, Dulaman, Kolm mul oli kaunist sona, Suo-Gan, Bright Morning Star, Shenandoah, Goin' Home, Loch Lomond, Christmas Angel Holst Singers : Over Hill, Over Dale Vaughan Williams's small-scale choral works are a comparatively lesser-known aspect of his art. The majority of these compositions arose from his folksong-collecting activities at the turn of the century; this recording brings some of his finest folksong arrangements together with other a cappella works. They cover the whole of the composer's long career. The Holst Singers are the foremost amateur choir in London. Under their musical director Stephen Layton they regularly perform on Radio 3 and Classic FM and in the major concert venues. The choir is joined for several songs by the renowned soloists Ian Bostridge and Michael George. Songlist: Loch Lomond, Full Fathom Five, The Cloud-Capp'd Towers, Over Hill, Over Dale, Alister McAlphine's Lament, An Acre Of Land, The Seeds Of Love, Ca' The Yowes, The Dark-Eyed Sailor, The Spring Time Of The Year, Just The Tide Was Flowing, The Lover's Ghost, Wassail Song, The Winter Is Gone, Mannin Veen, Bushes And Briars, Down Among The Dead Men, Sweet Day, O Mistress Mine, The Willow Song Iowa State Statesmen : That Which We Are We have just listened to a great 3-part series by Dr. Rodde's talented mixed-voice ensemble, the Iowa State Singers, and now we are treated to the Iowa Statesmen, Iowa State's popular men's over 100-voice choir. The two groups share a love of a cappella classical Christian music, such as Jakob Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Confirma hoc, Deus;" and spirituals such as Stephen Hatfield's joyous "Heaven Somewhere," and the Moses Hogan-arranged "Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit." The Statesmen also love folk music, such as "Loch Lomond," Gwenyth Walker's piano-accompanied "Crossing the Bar," the silly, live "Johnny Schmoker," "Cindy," the powerful, rhythmic African song "Noel," and the Russell Robinson-arranged "Ol' Man River." Finally, to remind us that the Statesmen are a collegiate group, there is a rousing collection of ISU School Songs. Dr. Rodde's groups share a rich, spirited sound, soaring leads, and top-drawer song selection, arrangements and direction. It adds up to a beautiful, entertaining collection! Songlist: O Magnum Mysterium, Confirma hoc, Deus, Zion Hears the Watchmen Singing, The Lord is My Shepherd, Heaven Somewhere, The Pasture, Vinum Bonum, The Quest Unending, Ra-ta-plan, Loch Lomond, El Yivneh Hagalil, Dies Irae, Crossing the Bar, Noel, Ol' Man River, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Johnny Schmoker (live), Cindy, ISU School Songs Kantorei : Small Blue Marble Richard Larsen and his choir Kantorei have been garnering great acclaim in recent years and their latest release shows why. The lovely name of the recording "Small Blue Marble" refers to the world as it showcases choral music from around the globe including songs from Thailand, South Africa, Nigeria, Spain, Scotland, Cuba, Israel and many others. Larsen has selected some intriguing compositions that celebrates the unity and diversity of cultures thru choral music and the choir singing is top-notch even when challenged to imitate a variety of Latin American percussions instruments while navigating dense choral structures. Songlist: Betelehemu, Cuncti Simus, Sugismaastikud, On Hilissuvi, Ule Taeva Jooksevad Pilvad, Kanarbik, Keine Feuer Keine Kohle Kann Brennen So Heiss, The Fields Of Corn Are Gone, Past Life Melodies, Ngam Sang Duan, Diu Diu Deng, La Villanella, Himne - Temmingh, Horizons, Vamuvamba, Loch Lomond, Barbara Allen, El Guayboso, Sim Shalom (Prayer For Peace)erg, Zum Gali, This Little Light Of Mine King's Singers : Annie Laurie: Folksongs of the British Isles Sparingly accompanied by Renaissance flute, piccolo and a guitar, these traditionals, and the descriptions that accompany them, are a charming introduction to the musical history of Britain. The famous "Danny Boy," (a cappella) somehow manages to summarize the grace and suffering of the Irish experience in its earnest melody; likewise, "Loch Lomond," (Scottish, also a cappella) brings the rough yet delicate beauty of Scotland to life. Several nineteenth century parlor songs are also included, such as "Home Sweet Home" and "Golden Slumbers." Also, the familiar "Scarborough Fair," "Greensleeves" and "What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?" Songlist: Scarborough Fair, Skye Boat Song, What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?, Annie Laurie, Greensleeves, Danny Boy, The Lincolnshire Poacher, Loch Lomond, The Lass of Richmond Hill, Down By The Sally Gardens, The Ash Grove, Aiken Drum, Golden Slumbers, Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night), Going to Town, Home Sweet Home, Eriskay Love Lilt, Mairi's Wedding Minnesota Boychoir : Forty and Fine Composed of four ensembles and including members of diverse faiths, races, social and economic backgrounds, the Minnesota Boychoir boasts over 100 members, representing the Twin Cities and over 25 suburbs. Plenty of (piano-accompanied) religious and spiritual songs are here, "Festival Sanctus," "The Storm is Passing Over," the lovely "Quando Corpus Morietur & Amen," "Rise Up, O Men of God," "Steal Away," "Zion's Walls," "Freedom Come," "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" and many others. Secular tunes like "Loch Lomond," Michael McGlynn's "Dulaman," John David's wonderful a cappella "You are the New Day" and Ysaye M. Barnwell's haunting "Wanting Memories" are other favorites. This CD brings together a quite varied but interesting group of songs.
