"Embraceable You" becomes three dimensional, it's so depthful. "You Go To My Head" has become something of a signature tune for Beachfront: the richness and texture of the Singers Unlimited, without encumbering the essence of the song with unnecessary ornamentation. Canadians Bernie Toorish, lead tenor; Brank Busseri, baritone; Jimmie Arnold, second tenor and Connie Codarini, bass; began singing together as, in fact, lads, at St. Michael's Cathedral Choir School in Toronto. They polished their harmonies at night, and obtained a try-out engagement at the Ruban Bleu in New York. It stretched into 30 solid weeks, and the Lads were on their way to being voted America's favorite vocal group. This is 2 LPs (originally released in 1959-60) on one CD, both orchestrally accompanied, all contagiously jazzy and exuberant as the lads demonstrate their versatility with ballads, old-time favorites, racing rhythm numbers and popular standards. Recorded in Holland in 1996 (with the exception of "Kokomo," the Beach Boys song that appeared on "Spirit Voices"), and therefore available only on import, some of the arrangements are innocuous, while others, such as "Live And Let Die" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" are merely unlikely. An a cappella version of "The Rose," from the film of the same name, is the CD's winner by a landslide.

Luboff is an American master, and his choir is one of the most powerful vocal groups of all time. Sure, all songs are gently accompanied, but the focus is on the smooth-as-maple syrup harmonies. Yes, it's four part harmony in the barbershop style, for certain, but their tastes are as sprawling as the great state they call home. Standards are the majority, with special kudos for a standout arrangement of "When I Fall In Love"; the luscious harmonic motion of the coda is pure honey.
