Famously set to music by Thomas Tallis, and taking words from the gospel of John, 'If Ye Love Me' is a fresh attempt at this famous passage of scripture. Rich harmonies will resonate in your performance space, enveloping your listeners with a tapestry of sound. The famous text of 'Tomorrow Will Be My Dancing Day' receives a madrigal-like setting with vibrant mixed meters and colorful vocal textures. Excellent for chamber groups and a cappella programs, this fascinating and rewarding work will surely delight! A new and simple arrangement of the famous prayer"God Be in My Head" joins the existing repertoire with rich harmony and strong melodic line. "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" - soft, expressive and thought provoking phrasing shape this lovely setting for unaccompanied voices. With an interesting use of the 5/8 time signature, the melody flows endlessly and effortlessly. Songlist: Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, If Ye Love Me, For the Beauty of the Earth, Jesus Christ, The Apple Tree, God Be In My Head Thomas Tallis : A Tallis Anthology This anthology comprises 17 of Tallis's shorter choral pieces, and is designed to provide choirs and students with a pratical and interesting cross-section of the composer's smaller-scale ourput. These are pratical perfoming editions, transposed where necessary, supplemented by a full critical apparatus for each peice and a general introduction to the anthology. Songlist: Audivi vocem de caelo, Derelinquit impius, Hear the voice and prayer, If Ye Love Me, In ieiunio et fletu, In manus tuas, Laudate Dominum, Mihi autem nimis, O Lord, give thy Holy Spirit, O Lord, in thee is all my trust, O nata lux, O Sacrum Convivium, O salutaris hostia, Purge me, O Lord, Salvator mundi, Te lucis ante terminum, Verily, verily, I say unto you Various Arrangers : English Church Music Vol 1 - Anthems & Motets Oxford Choral Classics: English Church Music assembles in two volumes around 100 of the finest examples of English sacred choral music of the past five centuries. The first volume, dedicated to anthems and motets, presents both favourite and lesser-known works, from the exceptional Renaissance polyphony of Taverner, Tallis, and Byrd, through the Restoration led by Purcell, to the glorious works of the great nineteenth- and twentieth-century composers, including Wesley, Elgar, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, and Howells. The volume contains a number of more substantial works, including Mendelssohn's Hear my prayer, Stainer's I saw the Lord, and Naylor's Vox dicentis: Clama, as well as a wonderful selection of shorter pieces, from Gibbons's O Lord, in thy wrath to Walton's Set me as a seal upon thine heart. With the second companion volume of canticles and responses, this bipartite collection presents a comprehensive survey of English sacred music at its best. Songlist: Rejoice in the Lord alway, Jesu, the very thought of thee, Salvator mundi, O where shall wisdom be found?, Ave verum Corpus, Haec dies, Justorum animae, Sing joyfully, They are at rest, Lord, for thy tender mercy's sake, O clap your hands, O Lord, in thy wrath, These are they which follow the Lamb, Lord, let me know mine end, My song is love unknown, Faire is the heaven, O how glorious is the kingdom, Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, Greater love hath no man, The souls of the righteous, Hear my prayer, Nolo mortem peccatoris, Vox dicentis: Clama, Ave Maria, Ascendit Deus, Hear my prayer, O Lord, I was glad when they said unto me, Let mine eyes run down with tears, Lord, how long wilt thou be angry?, Remember not, Lord, our offences, and more Calgary Girls Choir : Good Cheer Conductor Elaine Quilichini leads her talented singers in a lightly accompanied, spirited Christmas collection. The selection of 20 songs begins with the 8-parts of Derek Holman's eclectic masterpiece, "Sir Christemas," and continues in the same vein with David Willcocks' dissonant "Psalm 150," Eric Thiman's dreamy "Spindrift," a pair by Bach, "Wir eilen mit schwachen" and "Domine Deus," a moody pair by Imant Raminsh, "Psalm 23" and "Vestigia," and the moving "Bashana Habah'ah" by Nurit Hirsh. A lovely, very different Christmas collection by one of Canada's great girls choirs! Songlist: ir Christemas, Psalm 150, Spindrift, The Green Bushes, The Blackbird, Domine Deus, Wir Eilen Mit Schwachen, If Ye Love Me, Psalm 23, Vestigia, Bashana Habah'ah, MAry's Cradle Song, On Christmas Morn Cambridge Singers : Faire Is The Heaven The 28 mixed young voices of the Cambridge Singers bring us a remastered recording (originally recorded in 1982) of unaccompanied English church music from the 16th to 20th centuries, designed to be sung in a building with acoustics that allow its characteristic sonority to be heard in its full splendor-in this case the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, built in 1350. There are 23 motets and anthems here, from 4 periods in history, "Music of the Latin Rite," "Music of the Reformation," "Music of the Restoration" and "The Anglican Revival and the 20th century." Extensive, complete liner notes. Acclaimed director John Rutter was not sure if the marvelous sound of the Singers in the Chapel could be reproduced, but was gratified to find that it could. Marvelous soaring, angelic sacred music from an unequaled, ancient acoustic! Songlist: 1) Music Of The Latin Rite, Ave Maria, Loquebantur Variis Linguis, Miserere Mei, Haec Dies, Ave Verum Corpus, 2) Music Of The Reformatiion, If Ye Love Me, Hide Not Lhou Thy Face, Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy's Sake, O Clap Your Hands, Bow Thine Ear, Hosanna To The Son Of David, 3) Music Of The Restoration, Lord, How Long Will Thou Be Angry, Thou Knowest, Lord, Hear My Prayer, O Lord, 4) The Anglican Revival And The Twentieth Century, Beati Quorum Via, This Joyful Eastertide, Sing Lullaby, A Spotless Rose, What Cheer?, O Taste And See, A Hym To The Virgin, Jesus Christ The Apple Tree, Faire Is The Heaven Cambridge Singers : Treasures of English Church Music Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church. The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible. Songlist: Ave Maria, Loquebantur variis linguis, Miserere mei, Haec dies, Ave verum corpus, If Ye Love Me, Hide not thou thy face, Lord, for thy tender mercy's sake, O clap your hands, Bow thine ear, Hosanna to the Son of David, Lord, how long wilt thou be angry, Tho knowest, lord, Hear my prayer, O Lord, Beati quorum via, This joyful Eastertide, Sing Lullaby, A Spotless Rose, What cheer?, O taste and see, A Hymn to the Virgin, Jesus Christ the apple tree, Faire is the heaven, Rejoice in the Lord, Remember not, Lord, our offences, Come, let's rejoice, When David heard, I say down under his shadow, These are they that follow the Lamb, Christe Jesu, pastor bone, and more Cantus : Introit The young men of Cantus, an eleven-member ensemble from St. Olaf College, perform choral literature ranging from polyphony and chant to art songs and spirituals. Therefore the Latin "O Sacrum Convivium" (De Victoria) and Tallis' "If Ye Love Me" reside along a 20th century Gustafsson-composed "Kyrie" and "Gloria," the dissonant intervals heralding the epoch of modernism. "Nachtliches Standchen," a romantic lied, a form of which Schubert was master, is included, as is Finzi's "Thou Didst Delight My Eyes." "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" are quietly lambent; the acoustics of the church in Minnesota, where this CD was recorded, a perfect setting. Songlist: Introit for Trinity Sunday: Benedicta sit, O Sacrum Convivium, If Ye Love Me, Thee We Adore, Missa a cappella, Kyrie, Agnus Dei, Our Father, Ave Maria, Nachtlliches Standchen, Thou Didst Delight My Eyes, The Turtle Dove, Danny Boy, Shenandoah, Prayer of the Children, Adoramus te Chanticleer : Out Of This World A self-described "Chanticleer portrait," containing a variety of different styles (a cappella), all performed with the flawless technique for which the group is admired. "O Clap Your Hands" employs eight parts in a broad polyphonic convergence. Gabrieli's "Magnificat," from the sixteenth century, divides twelve voices into three four-part choirs. "Charm Me Asleep" is a recent work, written for the group; despite it's title, it is as disquieting as soothing. Three "tone poems" (an example of program music, where the music seeks to represent a specific text) by Richard Strauss follow, then Berlin's "Blue Skies"; the latter a swinging version adapted from the Dorsey arrangement that demands attention with dramatic fortissimo ending, and a middle break that detours into a brief classical medley, very reminiscent of the Swingle Singers! Chanticleer also gets down on "Straight Street" with an authentic gospel testimonial. Songlist: I Have Had Singing, O Clap Your Hands, If Ye Love Me, Magnificat a 12, Charm Me Asleep, Vor den Turen, Traumlicht, Frolich in Maien, Nude Descending a Staircase, Blue Skies, Shenandoah, Straight Street, Out of This World, O Waly, Waly, Journey to Recife, Jesus Met the Woman at the Well Choir of Clare College : Reflection Reflection celebrates 500 years of music-making in the English Parish Church. Over the centuries, on a daily basis, music has played an enormous role in enhancing the experience of Christian worship. The legacy is a vast body of music in many different styles to be enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians alike. Reflection focuses on those works of great beauty which provide spiritual nourishment and a place of sanctuary from today's busy lives. Reflection features familiar composers such as Byrd, Tallis, Bach, Mozart and Elgar giving over an hour's music to soothe the soul. Songlist: Ave verum Corpus, In pace in idipsum, Come, Holy Ghost, O nata lux de lumine, Ave verum, Lord for thy tender mercies sake, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, Ave Maria for 5 voices, O Saviour of the World, Jesus decus angelicum, Thou know'st, Lord, If Ye Love Me, O Taste and See, Ave verum corpus, Panis angelicus, O Vos Omnes, Give alms of thy goods, Never Weather-Beaten Sail for voice, Momento, homo (O Lord, give ear) Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Voices of Praise Voices of Praise is a spiritually uplifting collection drawing from the rich catalog of King's College Choir. Programmed to the church calendar it is an album for all seasons. Known world over for their recordings of church music the Choir of King's College, Cambridge has a rich catalog of recordings on EMI Classics dating back more than 30 years. This new collection Voices of Praise offers the most popular church music from that catalog. Among the great church works included on this recording are the hymns " A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", " Morning Has Broken" and " All People That On Earth Do Dwell" (The Old Hundredth). This is a double CD release. Songlist: All My Hope On God Is Founded (Michael), Morning Has Broken, Psalm 122, Totus Tuus, The truth sent from above, The Lamb, Hail, Gladdening Light, Psalm 84 "Quam Dilecta!", Come Down, O Love Divine, If Ye Love Me, Crucifixus a 8 Voix, My song is love unknown, Psalm 22: My God, my God, look upon me, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today, Thine be the glory (tune Maccabeaus, after Handel), No. 120, Psalm 148 O praise the Lord of Heaven, Set me as a seal upon thine heart, The Head That Once Was Crowned with Thorns, O clap your hands, God Is Our Hope & Strength, The lord ascendeth up on high (Nun freut euch), Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Gloucester Service, Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Ein feste Burg), Psalm 150 O praise the God in his holiness, All People That on Earth Do Dwell, The Lord Is My Shepherd, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, And I Saw a New Heaven, and more Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Music For Holy Week Superb ensemble singing from simply one of the finest choirs in the world. Philip Ledger's tenure at King's was relatively short but he produced a sublime sound from the choir. Then are many jewels on this disc from Lotti's 'Crucifixus' to the simply beautiful interpretation of Orlando Gibbon's 'Drop, drop slow tears'. Perfection in delivery and hauntingly beautiful tone quality mark this performance of some glorious holy week music. "The Lamentations of Jeremiah" are usually transmitted as a single piece in most contemporary manuscripts, but they are really two separate compositions in different modes. Tallis and his contemporary John Sheppard were the only 2 English composers of the time to compose hymn settings of any quality. It has been suggested that they had it in mind to compose a cycle of settings for Mary Tudor's chapel. "O Nata lux" may belong to this Marian set. It is almost entirely homophonic, and relies rhetorically upon a flexible declamatory style. " Salvator Mundi" is one of Tallis's best-known motets. The masterly treatment of imitative writing is combined with a fine sense of structure and balance, achieved through repetition, to give a sense of large-scale design, a feature characteristic of Tallis's best large-scale compositions. And the most beautiful anthem on the disc: Tallis's "If Ye Love Me". So much wonderful music, exquisitely sung; a delcious Easter treat! Songlist: Lamentations Of Jeremiah, O Nata Lux, Salvator Mundi, If Ye Love Me, Crucifixus, There Is A Green Hill Far Away, O Vos Omnes, Nolo Mortem Peccatoris, Tristis Est Anima Mea, Crux Fidelis, Videte Omnes Populi, Drop Drop Slow Tears, When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, Dum Transisset Sabbatum, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today, The Joyful Eastertide, Haec Dies, Let All The World In Every Corner Sing Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Choral Favorites From King's A collection of some of this world-class choir's "greatest hits" under the baton of three of the most highly regarded directors in the English choral tradition all at a very special price! Songlist: Miserere, Ave Verum Corpus, If Ye Love Me, Gloria In Excelsis Deo, The Lamb, Requiem Aeternam, Rejoice In The Lord Alway, Hallelujah Chorus, Jesu, The Joy's Of Man's Desiring, The Heavens Are Telling, Gott Ist Mein Hirt, Agnus Dei, To Be Sung Of A Sumer Night On The Water, The Birth Of Nicholas, There Is No Rose, Faire Is The Heaven, Hail, Gladdening Light, Holy Holy Holy, Land Of Hope And Glory Ensemble Amarcord : Hear The Voices "Hear the Voices" is not just the line of a prayer appearing several times on this CD, but also an appeal to the listeners - to listen between the lines, to hear the centuries between the lives of the various composers, between them and us, to hear the links between their styles of composition, the subtle nuances with which certain words are interpreted by sounds. This all calls for more careful attention than simple "listening". The musical journey starts in France, before taking us back half a millennium to the Flemish region with Luther as our guide. Then there's a little detour to the Iberian Peninsula, a trip to the British Isles, before we finally return to amarcord's native skies in present-day Germany. Songlist: If Ye Love Me, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise, Herr, Lehre Doch Mich - Mauersberger, Magnus es Tu Domine - Des Prez, Psaume 121 - Milhaud, Ave Verum Corpus - Byrd, Sunt Lacrimae Rerum, O salutaris hostia, Ach Wie Nichtig Ach Wie Fluchtig -, De Profundis -, Hear The Voice And Prayer -, Tenebrae - Great Northern Union Chorus : Bound For Glory Twin-Cities-based Great Northern Union, directed since 2002 by Peter Benson, is one of the midwest's most versatile choral groups. Surrounded by musical excellence, the group has a broad repertoire and a beautiful sound, and they add visual presentation to complete the package. "Bound for Glory" is "Gnu's" fourth recording, a special selection of sacred works. 11 songs, "Great Day," Thomas Tallis' "If Ye Love Me," "In This Very Room," "Swing Low/Swing Down Chariot," "God is My Rock," "Nearer My God to Thee/I Need Thee Every Hour," "When I Lift Up My Head," "This Train/When the Saints Go Marching In" and special bonus cut, Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" are particularly nice. An inspirational, beautifully arranged and sung collection from the talented, dynamic Great Northern Union Chorus Songlist: Great Day, If Ye Love Me, In This Very Room, Run, Run, Run, Swing Low / Swing Down Chariot, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, God Is My Rock, Nearer My God To Thee / I Need Thee Every Hour, When I Lift Up My Head, This Train / When The Saints Go Marching In, Ave Maria King's Singers : English Renaissance Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) was the most influential English composer in his day. He lived at Court from 1543 until his death. He survived the coming into dominance of Protestantism during Edward VI's reign, the restoration of Catholicism under Mary in 1553 and the tumultous tussle leading to the Elizabethan Settlement which devised a new church establishment then dominant for nearly a hundred years. Throughout these changes Tallis continued to write choral liturgical music in both the older Latin motet style and the newer English anthem style. His greatest student was William Byrd (1543-1623) who pushed the authorities with his staunch Catholicism but was such a brilliant composer that he never received more than a heavy fine. Elizabeth awarded them the exclusive rights to publish music in her realm, effectively creating a monopoly. The King's Singers bring us a sampling of the huge output from these two most influential composers, including both motets and anthems. These are performed for the joy of those who love renaissance music, with the musical perfection expected of the best. Songlist: Haec Dies, Te Lucis Ante Terminum, Beata Viscera Mariae Virginis, Ave Verum Corpus, Vigilate, Viri Galilaei, Te Lucis Ante Terminum, Lamentations Of Jeremiah, First Set, Lamentations Of Jeremiah, Second Set, If Ye Love Me, O Lord, Make Thy Servant Elizabeth, Our Queen, Sing Joyfully, Laudibus In Sanctis Luther College Nordic Choir : Everlasting God Following in the very large footsteps, and the 57-year tenure of Weston Noble at Decorah, IA's Luther College, Dr. Craig Arnold returned to serve as director of choral activities, conductor of the Nordic Choir, and professor of music at Luther. "Everlasting God" is a spirited collection of 20 songs, which highlight the rich, powerful sound of this great choir. Rene Clausen's "Laudate," two selections from Herbert Howells' "Requiem," the wonderful 6-part "Liebeslieder Walzer, op. 52" by Brahms, the Stephen Paulus-arranged traditional hymn, "We Gather Together," the 2-part "The Lord is the Everlasting God" by Kenneth Jennings, Ola Gjeilo's haunting "Ubi Caritas," the heart-tugging "Danny Boy" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water" are favorites. There is some light piano and organ accompaniment. Luther College places a focus and emphasis on music instruction and performance found in few other institutions, and that's why we consistently hear recordings of the highest quality-the Nordic Choir is simply one of the best in the world! Songlist: Laudate, If Ye Love Me, Psalm 23, Requiem aeternam, My Spirit Sang All Day, Liebeslieder Waltzer, op. 52, Rede Madchen, Am Gesteine rauscht die Flut, Wie des Abends schone Rote, Nein, es ist nicht auszukommen, Sieh', wie ist die Welle klar, Es bebet das Gestrauche, We Gather Together, The Lord is The Everlasting God, Movement I, Movement II, O Day Full of Grace, In Paradisum, Ubi Caritas, Danny Boy, Wade in the Water, O Lord God Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine Choir : Hail Holy Queen From Latin classics of Jacobus Gallus and Cesar Franck to the Russian a cappella romanticism of Pavel Chenokov, to Handel, Durufle and Wilby as well as fresh and original pop choral a cappella arrangements of "Ave Maria" and "Danny Boy", the Choir of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe in Orlando sets a new standard for musical diversity in Catholic Church liturgical repertoire. The Shrine Choir is the resident professional choir-in-residence at Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine and was formed to minister to the many thousands of tourists who travel to Central Florida's Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, and other attractions. The Choir's members come from all parts of the United States, and all have extensive choral experience. Dr. William Picher, director of the Shrine Choir, is an accomplished organist, trumpeter, conductor, composer and arranger. Three of his compositions appear of this CD, displaying a fresh harmonic approach to vocal writing. Songlist: Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above, Alleluia! The Chorale's desire is that "the message of our songs would be like an oasis in the desert, refreshing to the spirit and soul," and "Treasures in Heaven" is exactly that! Some of our favorites are "Sing and Rejoice," "Glory of the Lord," "If Ye Love Me," the title tune, "I Go to the Rock," "All That Hath Life & Breath," "His Footfall" (to the tune of the Folk song "Danny Boy"), "Working with Joy," "Jordan," "Abendlied" and "Alleluia," but every cut here is beautiful, uplifting and inspirational! For two decades ending with his official retirement in 1989, Robert Shaw was the conductor and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. During that period most of his choral work was for orchestra and chorus. Yet even before his retirement he had established the Robert Shaw Choral Institute which devoted it's efforts to furthering choral arts through conductor training, workshops and performances. Through the establishment of its summer festivals beginning in 1989, participants who were selected by audition came to the Quercy district of south-central France for two weeks of instruction and intensive rehearsal, culminating in a week of performances in the wonderful medieval churches of the region. Many of the recordings on this release were obtained by Telarc during the momentary summer existence of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. In the winters Robert Shaw created the Chamber Singers to further the practice of choral music. From both these groups has been assembled a group of recordings which reflect the deeply spiritual nature of the founder. Several of them have never been released before. You will find classical works by Tallis, Poulenc, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, and others in addition to several gospels sung by some of the most beautiful voices of the time. This is glorious full choral splendor! Included are 24 songs, from the title tune, Richard Farrant's "Hide Not Thou Thy Face," and Vivaldi's "Crucifixus," to Michael Cox' beautiful "O Holy Child," the folk songs "Down By The Sally Gardens" and " The Miller of Dee," closing with the lovely spirituals "Steal Away" and "Somebody's Calling My Name." Smooth, strong harmonies--this is powerful, inspirational spiritual music, sung with youthful energy by this wonderfully directed Christian male chorus. Great stuff! The ancient art of men's choral singing began early in the history of western music. From its roots in Jewish liturgical chant and the monastic chants of the early Christian church, through groups of troubadours in Medieval France and the male singing societies of nineteenth-century England and Germany, the male chorus has a rich and varied history, influenced by many of the world's most important cultures and religions. In modern times, male chorus traditions are carried on by collegiate and community choruses in dozens of countries around the world. With this program, the Washington Men's Camerata begins a series of recordings of some of the timeless gems of our repertoire, with the hope that this lasting testament to the power of men's voices raised in song will serve to inspire future generations of singers. If Ye Love Me was composed as a reflective commentary on the well-known motet by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585). Homophony predominates in the first section but with clusters rather than the traditional harmonies used by Tallis. At approximately the midpoint of the piece, the texture is reduced to a very simple four-voice contrapuntal texture as a brief reference to Tallis' style. The chorus then divides into two groups with one group continuing the counterpoint which is now expanded into a more active and complex style. The second group of voices returns to the homophonic style, but now in widely expanded harmonies. Thus, the motet concludes with homophony and counterpoint sounding simultaneously. Duration: 2:00

Keeping with this series' concept of maximizing the pedagogical potential of performed works, this motet, a sacred choral standard, offers solfege syllables for learning the parts and an "aural anchor accompaniment," a unique tool for developing better intonation. Minus the solfege and accompaniment the cherished Tallis motet stands ready to perform.

One of the most recognized anthems from the English Renaissance in a new adaptation specifically geared to the limits of younger voices and middle school choirs. Intimate and expressive, this would work well in both concert and worship settings and provides a great way to introduce young singers to historical choral works. Available for SSA and 3-Part Mixed.
