In January of l987, just for the fun of it, Dick Johnson and Lymm Hauldren decided to start a new group just to sing in the District Prelims. Instead of the one night stand they expected, they qualified for the International, made both cuts, placed ninth and even got a standing ovation! This live album is such great schtick and the gags so funny that the quality of singing is too easily taken for granted. It is also true it's great to share the laughter with a most appreciative audience. Typical of the gags are "Nothin' Could Be Finah'"(...than a little old angina in the morning...). It's amazing how many of their original jokes you will have heard in the world of medicine without ever knowing from whence they came.

Formed in 1956, the Four Renegades slowly rose in International competitions until winning it all by 450 points in Boston, 1965. At that point they were: Bass, Tom Felger, Baritone, Jim Foley, Lead, Ben Williams and Tenor Buzz Haeger. There are 30 songs, and it's hard to tell who's having more fun, the group or the audience. Want funny? Listen to "Mr. Bassman." Poignant? "The Little Boy." Rousing? "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee." Spiritual? "The Lord's Prayer." The Renegades were funny, they sang great, they had class, and they were tremendous barbershop ambassadors. It adds up to a CD that's big fun!

Sidewinders : Sidewinders   

On his Sunday night show in 1964, Ed Sullivan introduced the "brand new International Champs, the Sidewinders," who quickly broke into a rousing "For Me and My Gal." Tenor Jerry Fairchild, Lead Joe Daniels, Bass Jay Wright and Baritone Gene Boyd had placed 5th and 3rd before winning it all in San Antonio in July of 1964. Their sound is so clean, crisp and upbeat it's hard to wipe the smile off your face when listening to a cover like "Chattanooga Shoeshine Boy." All 22 songs are essentially perfect, but some standouts are "The Way You Look Tonight," "Dangerous Dan McGrew," and their most-requested "My Coloring Book." Classic stuff!

Sidewinders : One More Time   

1964 Barbershop Quartet Gold medal winners The Sidewinders, all members of the same SPEBSQSA chapter in San Antonio, who some people call the "Greatest Barbershop Quartet ever," deserve a "best of" CD, and we have it here in our hands! "One More Time" is ringing, chord-bending old-time Barbershop that SPEBSQSA "supergroups" try to recreate, but the Sidewinders achieved naturally, by singing, performing and competing together for decades. 19 songs, divided into "Early Days" ("Roll Out Of Bed With A Smile,"), "Chord Records" ("Ramona," "There'll Be Some Changes Made," "True Love" and "Molly Malone"), "Gold Medal Years" ("All American Girl," "Because," "Little Captain Of My Heart" and "Try To Remember"); and "Favorites" ("I Left My Heart In San Francisco," "Sailin' Down The Chesapeake Bay," "Tears For Souvenirs" and "Today"). First CD by Swedish male sextet, Vocal Six, released in 1992. Though broadly classified as contemporary, in actuality their sound, and selection of material, leans heavily towards jazz. Compact close harmony, brilliant swipes and scat breaks characterize their style, as exemplified by "Music, Music, Music," "My Baby Just Cares For Me" and a deliciously understated arrangement of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." A poignant, piano-accompanied "My Funny Valentine," wrings out every teardrop, as does the haunting Sting cover, "Sister Moon." Vocal Six plays the dance card with the "Bad/Thriller" medley and the group's own "Barberhouse Acid Rap," where they loosen their collars and grunt, James Brown style.
