While finding the original LPs in any kind of condition to play is unlikely, here you get the original master recordings on a CD with pictures of the four women, the original album covers and the original liner notes. Five Delights : Best of The Bronx   

One of the early mixed groups (two Blacks, a Jew, a Pole and a Puerto Rican), the 5 Delights had a couple of hit singles in the late 1950's. This recording was made in a basement with one monaural mike in 1960 'while the guys passed around a bottle of J &B,' according to the legend. Drawing material from a variety of sources, the group compiled a diverse set list: 'Begin the Beguine,' 'You Send Me,' 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' and 'I'm In The Mood For Love' are highlights. Some tunes, such as 'Whatcha Gonna Do,' have a gospel feel; 'Dearest Darling' is a smooth slow dance number.

Four sweet-harmonizing young Christian men - Brandon Guyton, his brother Chad, Lester Rector and Jayson VanHook, otherwise known as Four Voices, have put their hometown of Cleveland, TN on the Barbershop map. First singing together in Lee University's acclaimed Voices of Lee, the newly-formed quartet turned quite a few heads by winning SPEBSQSA's 1996 Collegiate and 1999 Dixie District Championships and singing well at the Nationals, their first step into the International top ten was winning the Gold at the 2002 convention in Portland! Since then the popular group has toured extensively, taking their distinctive, smoothly blended sound, passionate delivery and exciting arrangements to delighted audiences in concert halls, corporate venues and churches across the globe. "III" follows "Four Voices" and "Four Voices II" not just in order, but in feeling, quality and pure musicality. Favorites among these 12 tunes could easily include them all, but we'll arbitrarily pick the soulful "I Believe," poignant "Nearer My God to Thee," triumphant "How Great Thou Art," Lennon/McCartney's "Oh Darlin'," a light-hearted "Sesame Street" and, in further tribute to their 16-member Collegiate group, "For God So Loved the World," sung with Voices of Lee (lightly guitar accompanied). Dr. Stephen Zegree, concert pianist, educator and one of the most respected Vocal Jazz conductors on the planet, directs two 16-mixed voices permutations of Western Michigan's Gold Company, plus the Gold Company Band, essentially a 21-member Jazz orchestra in this 15-song, mostly-accompanied collection. Guest conductor Duane Shields Davis also directs a version of Gold Company and the Band here, as well as doing the dynamic arrangements for Rodgers & Hart's "This Can't Be Love" and Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye." Other favorites are the George Gershwin standard "I Got Rhythm, a scattish, salsa take on Caesar & Youman's "Tea for Two," a pair of originals written and arranged by student Tenor Mark Jackson, "Pure Gold," "We're Here for You" and "Go For The Gold;" Gillies & Foster's power ballad "Stand Up for Love," the a cappella version of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee," arranged, of course by Ward Swingle, Bobby McFerrin's sublime a cappella "In The Garden," and the Glenn Miller Classic that bears the name of the home of Western Michigan, "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo." Dr. Zegree has led Gold Company in winning a fistful of DownBeat Magazine awards and a reputation as one of the most respected Collegiate Vocal Bands in the world. When the Lawrence Welk Show was no longer on prime time, The Lennon Sisters didn't stop singing, or, judging by the cover of this "22 Songs," looking beautiful! The butter-smooth, sweet-harmonied sound of the Sisters hasn't faded a bit on these 22 lightly piano-accompanied songs. All American Barbershop ensemble singing at its finest, this chorus has some sort of compulsion to win gold medals in competition - four golds so far! "Showtime" has a Hollywood film medley and patriotic medley - both arranged by then-director Dr. Greg Lyne - as well as a line-up of barbershop "hits" that don't quit. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Old St Louie," and "Basin St. Blues" (the latter featuring the Masters Of Dixieland Band, who will convert the most cantankerous skeptic to the virtues of the saxophone), are just a few. Though over 140 in number, the Masters nonetheless are as one voice, one breath.

In 1950 a barbershop quartet, as yet unnamed, was to do a show in Wichita and the SPEBSQSA chapter president needed a name for the program, so he called the group "The Orphans." The name grew on them, and in 1954 they won District and Prelim contests, and then they were off to the Big Dance in Washington, DC. With the help of a Miracle Doctor, lead singer Bob Groom overcame the loss of his voice on their last set, and The Orphans, the pride of Wichita, were adopted-as International Champs! They wore the Gold with pride, singing nearly 60 shows a year all over the country. This CD is a generous, 23-song "best-of" compilation, and we can tell from the first strains of "Hello Song" that these guys are masters of the ringing chord. Some favorites: "The Bell In The Lighthouse," "On The Road To Mandalay," "Sitting On Top of the World," the classic "Sweetheart Of Sigma Chi," "Cuddle Up A Little Closer," "Somebody Stole My Gal," "The Whiffenpoof Song," "Twelfth Street Rag," "Stephen Foster Medley," "Side By Side," "Farewell Song" and "Wait 'Til The Sun Shines Nellie," live from an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Three-time UGHA winners Reunion - no other group has had that distinction - have been singing together in various incarnations since the 1960's. They also competed in and won the 'Acappella Showdown' in 1990 and 1991. This experience has resulted in a smooth fluid sound and crisp delivery; they avoid harshness. Their strong suit is the roundness and fullness of their tone. This year's program was the most diverse and exciting yet. Filled with emerging groups, as well as Sweepstakes favorites such as Chicago Voice Exchange, the competition was intense indeed. Seven, from New York, garnered top honors, with their intricate and multi-textured voicings, heard to best advantage on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; the group's arrangements are expanding the universe of sound. Taking second place were the Standards, five brothers whose onstage appeal and energy charmed everyone. Minimum Wage's outrageous humor, as exemplified by "The Last Cowboy Song," had the audience begging for mercy (or more?) Other musical highlights include the ringing tones of last year's champs, Metropolis (a barbershop quartet), the Euphorics, with "Message In A Bottle" and Pickup 6's medley of Beatles favorites.

Springing from SPEBSQSA's contests and festivals aimed at young people, Baritone Paul Graham and lead Ted Bradshaw sang with the Devilaires at Arizona State. Other veterans of high school and college quartets came in and out of the group after its formation in 1964, helping it place 8th in Boston in 1965, but dropping to 21st in 1966. Adding Tenor Al Mau and Bass Phil Foote seemed to turn the Continentals around, and the group came out of nowhere to win Silver at the Los Angeles International in 1967. In 1968 they won it all, edging out the Golden Staters. One of the clearest, strongest leads ever to step up to a Barbershop mike, Ted Bradshaw shines on everything from "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "The Masquerade is Over," to the classic "I Believe," and the others match him note for breathless note. Sweet, Pure, Classic; in short, Incredible!
