"Cowboy Take Me Away" - A young girl dreams of romance and adventure in this heartfelt song by the Dixie Chicks that soared to the top of the country and pop charts! "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" - Originally recorded by Patsy Montana in 1935, this was the first country song by a female artist to sell more than one million records. Subsequently covered by Suzy Bogguss, the Dixie Chicks and LeAnn Rimes, it's a sweet and sassy novelty song that will showcase your SSA choirs. "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" - This 1961 hit captures all the mystery and excitement of a spectral stampede. This western classic will be tremendously fun to perform! "The Colorado Trail" - This gentle setting of a traditional cowboy song starts with one part and slowly builds to three-part harmony. Written for the Harvard Glee Club, this arrangement of 'Skye Boat Song' is men's choral singing at its best! From the Mark Foster catalog, 'What Wondrous Love Is This' is another well-loved folk hymn arrangement from J. Harold Moyer. Written for the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus, Moyer has taken a beautiful folk hymn and crafted it into an exquisite choral anthem. Using the modal folk melody, he has embellished the harmony with broad, open chords and scalar movement, giving the piece a chant-like quality. The a cappella arrangement of 'Home on the Range' bursts with colorful harmonies and textures which expertly interpret the text. Described by some as a "perfect melody," this American standard gives your ensemble a chance to show off their impeccable tuning and blending abilities for concert, contest, or festival. Features unison phrases, brief solo sections, and lush, unexpected harmonies. A traditional Irish folksong, 'The Minstrel Boy,' is a fun and exciting four part men's arrangement. The baritone solo in the middle of the piece is definitely noteworthy! 'Tenting On the Old Campground' is known as the most popular 'melancholy song' of the Cival War. It was written in 1862 by a concert ballad singer from New Hampshire wh was deferred from army service because of 'feebleness of constitution.' But he did sing it for Union troops in the field. The song appealed to soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This would be a great addition to your concert! 'Let's Drink!' is a fun three part men's piece that can be sung during your concert or even at the after-party!

Although the Dinning Sisters found commercial fame in the 1940s as a close harmony trio in the style of the Andrews Sisters, their roots lay in the developing Country music of the 30's-not surprising as the girls were raised in rural Wichita, KS. "Back" has 26 tunes, many of them featuring George Barnes on guitar, all fairly lightly accompanied. This is upbeat music, falling into the general category of the 1920's Western Swing of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys ("San Antonio Rose," cut #19), and 1950's and 60's Rockabilly music. "Turn Your Radio On," Gene Autry's "You'll Be Sorry," "Gospel Cannonball," the jazzy "Oh! The six very talented men from Chicago who call themselves Hudson Shad have recreated themselves in the mold of the 1927 German group, the Comedian Harmonists, and "Wand'rin' Stars" is their 5th CD. In love with the jazzy, funny, manic musical style of the roaring 20s, the Shad men could hardly fail to notice Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Western Swing and the novelty "Cowboy Songs" of that period. Manhattan Transfer meets the Sons Of The Pioneers!! The incomparable Morgan Ames had produced, arranged and recorded the selections which she describes as "a group of a cappella cowboy and mountain songs based on pure historical American, plus a few strays, filtered through my jazz-based sense of harmony and four city singers." She goes on to add... "I grew up looking for home on the range, pretending to be Annie Oakley on rented horses at the Burbank Stables. But singing this music, our shared American heritage, was a gift and that's how we offer it to you." Now, all isn't just tradition as occasionally a new lyic or two is added, but the singers Shelby Flint, Morgan, Melissa Mackay and Michael Mishaw manage to maintain a sensibility of tradition while creating an entirely new feel, exactly as Morgan describes in her quoted comments above. Real traditional tunes such as "Home on the Range," "Old Diamond Joe," (a multi-track overdubbed recording sung entirely by Michael) and "Old Chisholm Trail" are mixed in with a leavening of newer tunes such as "Witchi Tai To," "My Real Home," and "Springtime in the Rockies." The only difficulty we face in reviewing a recording of this calibre is expressing our enthusiasm without going overboard!

Vocal Majority / Mormon Tabernacle Choir : Voices In Harmony

Two of the world's greatest vocal groups, one traditional and one barbershop, together in a single collection, recorded live in 1986 (don't be concerned about the sound or vocal quality; it's super). Three of the songs, "How Great Thou Art," "Love At Home" and "Nearer My God To Thee," feature both, and the remaining eleven tracks allow each ensemble to showcase their unique talents. As the Tabernacle Choir's director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, explains, the choir sings with "an openness of resonance, and the Majority sings primarily with forward resonance. That is, they sound brighter." Most of the songs are inspirational (and about half are organ accompanied), though "Danny Boy," "Home On The Range," "Windows Of the World" and Barry Manilow's "One Voice" round out the set. Both groups have a rich and full tone that is at the same time transparent and weightless; ensemble singing at its best!

Another fine collection by prolific World Voices, whose mission is "celebrating global cultures and creating community through choral music." Renowned founder Dr. Erickson directs the 40-strong, mixed-voice ensemble in 22 selections from all over the world, favorites include folk tunes "Home on the Range," "The Blue Tail Fly" and "Old Black Joe" from the US, Native American songs "This We Know" and "In Dreams" by Ron Jeffers; the Welsh tune "Ffa La Ba Lam," the Irish "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby" and the Scotch song "I'll Ay Call In By Yon Town." Others are Kenya's "Ning Wendete," Ecuador's "Wawaki," Israel's "Bashana Haba'ah," Korea's "Ahrirang," Iceland's "Visur Vatnsenda-Rosu" and Sweden's "Domaredansen."
