It is only two years after the first album which was pure classical barbershop. On Stars & Stripes the same perfectly pitched close harmonies are in full bloom but the repertoire is expanded considerably. There is a rousing selection of patriotic songs, "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "The Star Spangled Banner," "God Bless The USA" and more! In the middle of the lineup we find a touch of jazz and then barberwop on "Unchained Melody." Acoustix is joined by Panache, the 1990 Queens of Harmony, for two songs on which they sing quartet duets. They do a chills up the back rendition of "This Is The Moment" just before closing with "So Many Voices Sing America's Song" on which they are joined by The American Pops Orchestra and The Vocal Majority. Well here's a real treat! Without doubt Acoustix are one of the best barbershop quartets there ever has been and include some of the genre's most talented singers. This is a best of CD that also includes four all new studio recordings namely "Moon River", "You Are So Beautiful", "O Canada" and "The Impossible Dream." One expects to be blown away by these singers and sure enough these new songs deliver the goods. Founded in 1965, the Cincinnati Boychoir presents its own concert series and performs 40 times a year for symphonies, television, community organizations, churches, weddings, clubs and retirement homes. "America Sings" features 18 songs, some accompanied by piano, flute and organ. Our favorites are the spirituals "Great Day!," "Run to Jesus," "Deep River" and "I Hear a Voice Callin' for Me," "Variations on America" and "I Hear America Singing." Others are Irving Berlin's "God Bless America," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." James Dana's "My Tent Beside the Oregon," "When Can I Read My Title Clear" and the American folk tune "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" are also very fine. Another stellar collection by one of our favorite boychoirs!

Eclipse 6 : For Show   

We have been fans of the 6 young men of Logan, UT-based Eclipse since we first saw them at the Harmony Sweeps Finals in 2001 and 2002, regional winners from Denver. Their fine CDs "Once," "Think Twice" and "Three Kings" only increased our admiration. Some CARA and "Best of State" awards later, we have the live CD "For Show" in our hands, and can only relate to it as Eclipse's "breakthough to the bigtime" CD. "Kick Back, Relax," Yes' 80s anthem "Owner of A Lonely Heart," "Keep Pushin' On," the wonderfully romantic "You," "Every Other Time," "My Maria," the classic "Danny Boy," the very funny "McDonald's Girl" and "Always Coca-Cola," the Michael Jackson hit "She's Out of My Life," a stunning cover of the rap hit "Boom! Shake the Room," "Zoot Suit Riot," "All My Life" and bonus tracks "Live It On Up-Remix" and "The Star Spangled Banner." Always very strong vocal percussionists and strong performers in concert, the boys have all their a cappella ducks in a row on "For Show," and the audience, as you will hear, is simply going nuts! These guys are simply stars, "For Show" is one of the best of the year, and we couldn't be happier for these guys!

Songs of patriotism and inspiration were always part of Fred Waring's broadcasts and stage shows. By popular request, Songs of Freedom was compiled from recordings in their collection. Selections include John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" from Miss Liberty by Irving Berlin and "Battle Hymn Republic," which was made popular by Roy Ringwald's arrangement and won a gold record. Also included is Fred Waring's "love song for America," "My America." Waring wrote the song for his bicentennial shows in 1975.

Gem City Chorus : From The Heart   

Gem City won the Sweet Adelines Internationals in the Chorus Category an unprecedented five times! How did they do it? Great material, enthusiastically performed and dynamically arranged! Makes it sound simple, doesn't it? Directed by Jean Barford, this Dayton Ohio aggregate's sound is as unified as can be, its articulation crisp, timing right on the money. "As Time Goes By" is swung a little faster than average, "How's Every Little Thing In Dixie" exaggerates the phrasing effectively, hurrying through the tune like the March Hare. "Let Us All Be Grateful" is another stellar collection from Elk River, MN's famous Land of Lakes Choirboys Viking Choir. One of the best boys' choirs in the world, the Choirboys are known nationally and internationally for their perfect intonation and pure, clear sound. "Let Us" is a mix of patriotic tunes, "The Star Spangled Banner," "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America;" traditional folk songs like "Der Almsee is trueab," "Der Dui-Dui," Australia's "The Wild Colonial Boy" and the Serbian Gypsy Dance "Niska Banja;" spiritual tunes (Purcell's "Rejoice in the Lord Always," Maierhofer's "Mater Dei" and Bestor's "The Prayer of the Children); and other favorites such as Rossini's "The Carnovale" and the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun." The 138-strong, white-uniformed New Tradition Chorus was formed in 1982 as a performance and competition chorus, directed by Jay Giallombardo (who also does most of their arrangements), with the goal of becoming the best male chorus in the world. Beginning in 1987, when they placed 4th in SPEBSQSA's International Chorus competition, they medaled every year since then, including winning the gold medal in Nashville in 2001. The 25th Anniversary Celebration Concert was recorded on May 18th, 2003 at Powell Symphony Hall. It included all 15 ensembles of the St. Louis Children's Choirs, plus a special choir of 90 alumni from across the United States. The Choirs were started in 1978 by Diance Finley whose vision established the artistic and professional foundation for the Choirs. Today, The St. Louis Children's Choirs include approximately 550 young people in 1st through 12th grades who come from over 275 schools throughout the greater St. Louis area.

"Spirit of Freedom" has received critical acclaim in all the major publications (Fanfare, American Record Guide, etc.) Several of the tracks have been featured on a PBS series called "Freedom: A History of US." In addition, those same tracks have been featured on a soundtrack recording and companion anthology released by SONY records. Gothic's original recording "The Spirit of Freedom" is the best anthology available of patriotic songs and the only complete recording containing all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner.

On April 5, 1998 The Women's Chorus of Dallas performed the music from this CD in Dallas; exactly 100 women on stage in authentic 1940s attire. The artistic director, and the only man at TWCD rehearsals, is Dr. Tim Selig. Their principal accompanist and arranger is Anne Albritton, whose piano graces all the songs. There are 17 great songs from the 40s here, but actually many more; "Train Medley," for instance, includes "Take the A Train," "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," and "Choo-Choo Ch'Boogie." There's a wonderful booklet included with photos and dedications and memories. The audience, many of whom got through the 40s with the help of this wonderful music, loved it, and so will you!
