Various Arrangers : Women's Jazz 3 Sung either soli or solo, the front section of 'Give Me the Simple Life' really sets up this chart for success. A written-out bass solo leads into an a cappella SSAA quartet feature that is 'a real gas!' Back to the bridge, on through a key change to the classic Basie "Splanky" ending. Suitable for contest or concert. Freytag's latin version of 'Summertime' will be fun for the singers and the audience. 'Playrooms' is an a cappella jazz waltz, that will set a gentle tone in your program. The text, written by Jackie Farrell, describes the beauty of young children and of the simple joys often forgotten by adults. 'Queen of Hearts' is a playful, easy to sing yet very full sounding version of this repeated pop and country top ten hit. The lead moves from part to part, giving the upper three parts each a chance to sing the melody. The alto 2 "bass line" features plenty of lyrics and countermelodies as well. 'I Remember Clifford,' a classic Benny Golson tune, is set here for female voices and a torch-style soloist. The tribute to jazz great and trumpet player, Clifford Brown, has remained a jazz standard since first introduced. The lush harmonies provide a beautiful setting for Golson's tribute. The soloist has freedom to sing the line as written or develop her own solo line. This is a very talented quartet of singers who has chosen a most eclectic and interesting repertoire for this recording. They are also singing the arrangements of a veritable who's who of the great barbershop arrangers including Latzko, Wright, Briner, Waeche, Clancy and Rene Craig. Barbershop gurus Joe Connelly and Tony DeRosa also helped with the recording adding further to the feel of barbershop royalty and to the impeccable sound of the CD. This Buzzapalooza has plenty of razzmatazz and is highly recommended to all fans of barbershop singing. Songlist: Give Me The Simple Life, How Deep Is The Ocean, Back In Business, Blues In The Night, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Until The Real Thing Comes Along, Because Of You, He Broke My Heart In Three PlaceJim Clancy, Sweet Hour Of PrayerDavid Wright, Midnight Serenade, Lucky To Be Me, Here And Now Crossroads : The Simple Life After being crowned 2009 Barbershop Harmony Society Quartet Champions, Crossroads has become one of the most sought-after a cappella foursomes in the world, performing in Germany, France, Finland, the U.K., Spain and all over the United States. First coming together as a group in 2007, Tenor Fred, Lead Mike, Bass Jim and Baritone Brandon found that they shared a genuine friendship rooted in faith, family, harmony and a love of great music. And that has given them the opportunity to share their music with audiences all over the world! "The Simple life," their 3rd album, features 11 finely crafted and arranged tunes. Some of our favorites are the Ella Fitzgerald renditions of the title track, "Give Me the Simple Life" and the sultry lament "Angel Eyes;" the Deep River Boys' 1941 version of the 1876 song "My Grandfather's Clock;" Michael Buble's hit single "Hold On," Lerner & Lowe's classic "Gigi," Ron Miller and Orlando Murden's "For Once in My Life," the traditional hymn "Rock My Soul;" Cole Porter's "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and Robert Lowry and Mrs. A. S. Hawkes' deeply moving "I Need Thee Every Hour." "The Simple life" is a powerful collection from one of Barbershop's most talented and beloved champions, Crossroads. Songlist: Give Me The Simple Life, Angel Eyes, My Grandfather's Clock, Hold On, Children, Go Where I Send Thee, Gigi, A Word On My Ear (I'm Tone Deaf), For Once In My L1fe, Rock My Soul (In The Bosom of Abraham), Someone Like You, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, I Need Thee Every Hour The Four Freshmen : The Swingers / 5 Trumpets It's a twofer! Two classic albums are included on this CD of one of the great male quartets of the twentieth century! Their ability to maintain perfect intervals in vertical harmony is legendary. Fortunately the legend lives anew as almost every one of their tremendous discography has now been remastered for CD. Songlist: Lulu's Back in Town, Li'l Darlin', Let's Take A Walk Around the Block, Dynaflow, Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me, Spring Isn't Spring Without You, Taps Miller, When My Sugar Walks Down the Street, Satin Doll, This Could Be the Start of Something, Lullaby of Birdland, I'm Gonna Go Fishin', Easy Street, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, Laughing on the Outside (Crying on the Inside), After You've Gone, Good-Bye, There Will Never Be Another You, Got a Date with an Angel, Something in the Wind, Someone Like You, The Night We Called It a Day, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight, Give Me the Simple Life, Lonely Night In Paris, )I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons The Idea of North : Extraordinary Tale "Extraordinary Tale" is a marvelously packaged CD that underscores why we love CDs over downloaded mp3s or such. The jewel case folds out to 6 panels, which are all decorated with moody, lowbrow children's book illustrations of mechanical birds, patchwork metal whales, and the group as children in a red-striped boat on a curly-cued sea. Inside a slot is a folded treasure map, where we see an old victrola, spouting fishes, the mechanical birds are singing, and the whale spouts a microphone-a metaphor on the group's experience as the top a cappella group in Australia, perhaps? The different islands on the map have the names of the 13 songs on them, plus the running times. On the flipside of that are the names of the singers, Sally, Naomi, Nick and Andrew, plus the welcome disclaimer: "This is an a cappella recording. All the sounds on this album were produced by the voices and/or bodies of the ION." For those not familiar with mixed Vocal Jazz quartet ION, they blew in from Down Under and won the 2003 Harmony Sweeps, and we joined everyone in the sold-out audience in becoming their fans for life. Our favorites among the 13 cuts? Their bluesy, scattish take on Chick Corea's "Armando's Rhumba," an understated, deliciously melodic, jazzy hit on the Swing tune "Don't Wait Too Long," a heartbreakingly fine soprano lead and background harmonics on Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sting's "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" riffs into an unbelievable lovely scat tapestry; Lennon and McCartney's "In My Life" fits perfectly into the poignant mood. Group member Andrew Piper gives us a rare, wonderful original, "One Minute More," Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing" has a vocal muted trumpet and a vocal percussion solo that you should hear; Ray Charles' "Hallelujah I Love Her So," Stevie Wonder's "Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer," Sinead O'Connor's "In This Heart," Aretha Franklin's "Since You've Been Gone" and Peter Allen's "I Still Call Australia Home" are all amazing but this review has gotten absurdly long. Treat yourself to "Extraordinary Tale," and thank us later! Songlist: Armando's Rhumba, Don't Wait Too Long, Both Sides Now, La Belle Dame Sans Regret, In My Life, One Minute More, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Hallelujah I Love Her So, Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer, Give Me The Simple Life, In This Heart, Since You've Been Gone, I Still Call Australia Home Marquis : Diamond Cuts 1995 International Champions, Marquis begins their recording with the final song from their winning competition, "With A Song In My Heart," arranged by Jim Clancy. And so these winners share with us the Nat King Cole hit, "When I Fall In Love," Walter Latzko's arrangement of "Give Me The Simple Life," Bill Mitchell's arrangement of "Never Never Land," their opening tune from the final round of the gold medal pursuit "I Found A Million Dollar Baby In A Five-And-Ten Cent Store" and Greg Volk's jazz arrangement of "Paper Moon." This reviewer thanks Marquis not only for marvelous singing but their willingness to share the credit with coaches and arrangers in great notes! Songlist: With A Song In My Heart, When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam', When I Fall in Love, Give Me the Simple Life, Never Never Land, I Found a Million Dollar Baby in a Five-And-Ten Cent Store, What Kind of Fool Am I, Taking A Chance On Love, The Sweetheart Tree, It's Only a Paper Moon, Gypsy Love Song, Watch What Happens, I Will Never Pass This Way Again Ella Fitzgerald : Live at Montreux, 1969 Eagle Eye Media's Live In Montreux series continues with a travel through time to June 22, 1969, featuring a performance from The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. Featuring fully restored Black and White footage and remixed audio in 5.1 and DTS, this program presents a stunning performance from one of the most versatile jazz singers of all time. After making a name for herself as the featured singer for Chick Webb's Orchestra in the late 1930's, she began appearing as part of Norman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic series. She fronted for Duke Ellington, where she learned her bop style and also began adding scat into her performances. Her recordings of standards and contemporary classics helped boost her career from the 1950's until her final recordings in 1992. Joining Fitzgerald in this performance are: Tommy Flanagan (piano), Frank de la Rosa (bass), and Ed Thigpen (drums). Songlist: Give Me the Simple Life, This Girl's in Love With You, I Won't Dance, A Place for Lovers, That Old Black Magic, Useless Landscape, I Love You Madly, Trouble Is a Man, A Man and a Woman, Sunshine of Your Love, Well Alright Okay You Win, Hey Jude, Scat Medley, A House Is Not A Home |
