"Sleigh Ride" is the second release from talented mixed-voice (4 men, 4 women) a cappella octet An Octave Above, who were 1st runner-up at the 2005 Chicago Harmony Sweeps Regionals. The group has been gaining fans with live performances at many Chicago venues, and this Christmas album shows off some of their cutting-edge arrangements and tight, jazzy harmonies. 12 songs, some of our favorites are the opening cut "Sleigh Ride," a moody, jazzy "What Child is This" (with a fine solo by Debra), a richly harmonized "Away in a Manger," a bluesy, funky "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen," "Mary Did You Know" (with Melinda's sweet lead), a surreal, '30s-retro "Toyland," a richly Italianesque "Gesu Bambino," a nicely-arranged "O Holy Night," a classic "Silent Night," and an upbeat "We Three Kings" with tight vocal percussion by Scott. Formed in 1986 by a group of guys who got together to sing barbershop in somebody's basement, the BCC has now grown to over 100 members, the largest barbershop chorus in the Southeast. The group has medaled in SPEBSQSA'S International Chorus Competition, placing as high as 3rd in 1999. They are joined by barbershop stars Fred, Riptide, Atlanta Power Company, Scruffy Murphy's and Mary Selano. 11 songs, from the title tune, "Silent Night" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town;" to "Beautiful Savior," "Sleigh Ride," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear/First Noel/Joy To The World Medley" and "May The Good Lord Bless You and Keep You." The addition of the guest artists allows many solos and delightful variations in the sound of these classic Christmas tunes. The Cathedral Singers, an independent ensemble of professional Chicago-area singers, who participate in a wide range of musical activity, from early music performance to jazz and musical theater. All accompanied, all wonderfully and joyously performed! Many treasures of church music celebrating the birth of Christ are sung with great beauty and eloquence. The Knudsens ascended through the a cappella ranks as a barbershop group, but are now firmly ensconced as pre-eminent contemporary artists. Their long-awaited "Yuletide" combines the seamless blend of barbershop with percussion-rich production of contemporary a cappella. The familiar "White Christmas" and "Christmas Song" are nicely arranged, with plush chords and smooth modulations. The walking bass of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" sets up a swing feel, while the CD's closer, a "Christmas Hop" mix of the same song, is hip and shows the Knudsens cutting loose, incorporating techno effects into the tune. The tonal interplay of the pitches resonating off of each other in "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is inspiring and one of the most beautiful arrangements of this carol that we've heard. Uncle Daniel Knudsen (of the Mormon Tabenacle Choir) takes a solo turn on the classical art song "Gesu Bambino." This CD will appeal to a variety of listeners and is a recommended gift selection.
