Alan Bullard : O Come, Emmanuel O Come, Emmanuel is an Advent Celebration, suitable for both church and concert choirs. It is based on the 7 Great 'O' Antiphons, and fragments of the well-known plainsong hymn permeate the work. To these, Bullard has added settings of a number of other Advent texts and hymns, including the beautiful 'There is a rose-tree', a rousing setting of 'Chanticleer Carol', and new arrangements of 'Gabriel's Message' and 'Joy to the world!'. The work may be sung throughout by SATB choir, or a range of soloists may take some of the lines. The accompaniment - for organ or piano, or with small orchestra or chamber group - is equally flexible. A number of the movements make highly effective separate pieces and anthems. Written with the composer's long and practical experience, O Come, Emmanuel is a strikingly original work for Advent and Christmas that will enhance both liturgical celebrations and concert programmes at this time. Songlist: The advent of our God, O Wisdom, Where shall Wisdom be found?, O Lord of Lord, Come, thou long-expected Jesus, O Root of Jesse, There is a rose-tree, O Key of David, Earth grown old, Thy kingdom come! on bended knee, O Morning Star, Chanticleer, O King of the Nations, Joy to the world!, And they shall call his name Emmanuel, O Emmanuel, Gabriel's Message, Lo! he comes with clouds descending Barry Rose : Merrily On High - For Upper Voice Choirs Merrily On High is an exciting compilation of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany music for church, cathedral, school, youth and community choirs of 'upper voices' - trebles or sopranos and altos. Rutter is a composer, conductor and arranger and he brings all of that to these high holiday gems. Most of the carols are very well known, though in the arrangements of Rutter they sound completely fresh. There are some new carols here - Rutter's own 'Riu Riu Chiu' (the sounds a nightingale makes) and 'The Colours of Christmas' - and some new approaches to old ones. The main factor that makes this such a perfect selection of holiday music is the free intermixing of religious carols with contemporary Christmas songs. Songlist: Ding Dong! The song selection ranges from familiar carols such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "I Wonder as I Wander," "The Three Kings," "What Child Is This and "Silent Night," to a Welsh lullaby, "Suo Gan," and "Gabriel's Message," a Basque carol arranged by John Rutter. This CD is intended to go well with a cold night, a roaring fire, and some eggnog. Due to the loving work of John Atkinson and the singers of Cantus, the album is that and more. It illuminates the human side of the Nativity, focusing on the idea of new life in the dead of winter and the bond between parent and child. If you love gospel/spiritual music this is for you. If you love rock, this is for you. If you love country, this is for you. Who, what, whazzat, you say? Poor Baker's Dozen is six men who are presenting us with such a new palate of gospel sounds that it is difficult to fathom. There is a truly sweet, upbeat opening number. The sweetness is created by the beautiful male alto and three tenors of the group who are grounded by superb baritone and bass voices. Next we are catapulted into a techno intro of the title song 'Pour.' Wow! The original creation of this music is just starting. Next comes the touch of James Brown at the beginning of 'Leap of Faith' which keeps astonishing us with little vocal techno embellishments which are as surprising as they are original. Then there is 'Joyful Noise,' almost all vocal explorations with hardly any lyrics. It begins with an almost Bobby McFerrin sound before resolving into a sweet scat with a 'fuzz guitar' vocal solo. In a way this is the theme song of the album to this reviewer's ear. You see, many gospel and spiritual singers and groups sing about joy. Poor Baker's Dozen sing joy. You'll hear the difference in the marvelous creativity of sound and soul presented here. Such musical joy can only be found in play. Play which discovers originality and then is refined by striving for perfection. It can be safely said that this is inspired music. It is also fun! There's a country tune which delights as it varies back and forth from a parody a dance tune to a traditional country gospel sound. Along the way in this musical delight you will find a bit of percussion on two tunes and one which has cello and guitar accompaniment. Songlist: Grace, Pour, Leap Of Faith, Joyful Noise, Jimmy, Just As I Am, Ask, Seek, Knock, This Is A Love Song (The Country Song), Sing Along Song (A Happy Reminder), The Way, Gabriel's Message, Wash Over Me, Bread and Water Poor Baker's Dozen : Christmas with St. Paul, MN's all-male Contemporary Christian sextet Poor Baker's Dozen's "Christmas with PBD" is their 4th excellent CD. We can't tell you very much about the group because the liner notes are sparse, and their website focuses on their ministry-which we like, because it places the emphasis on the group's calling as opposed to promoting themselves individually as singers. 8 songs, a very nicely arranged "Drummer Boy," a fine original by group member David Olson, "Redeemer in the Hay," "Pat-a-Pan," "Good Stuff" (the group's comment on Christmas consumption, writing new words to the Young Rascals' classic "Good Lovin',") "Gabriel's Message," "Silent Night" and the group-arranged "Amen." Some light percussion played by the group. PBD prefers to let their music and message do the talking, and "Christmas with PBD" speaks quite eloquently! Songlist: Drummer Boy, Redeemer In The Hay, Pat a Pan, Gentle Mary, Good Stuff, Gabriel's Message, Silent Night, Amen Tudor Choir : Fair With Her First Born The music on this recording spans many centuries, including 20th-century carols, Tudor polyphony, and chant from medieval England's Sarum rite. Producing a choral sound that is distinctly English in heritage, the Tudor Choir sings this music with intelligence and heart. Shape note music, Shaker songs, Sheppard, Tallis, and Victoria. The 6-men, 2-women octet performs extensively in the UK, Europe and the US, and has been drawing reviews such as "stunning performance," "exquisite singing" and "a sound that spans the entire range of vocal color." We can only agree with this assessment in every way, and point out that after the octet's recent performance at the ACDA Convention in Oklahoma City, over a hundred people lined up at the PAC booths to buy "Evensong," and only 75 were lucky enough to get one, but we have now managed to get our hands on a bunch more from the group! 12 songs, every one an exquisite gem, so we will simply list them: British composers Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley's title tune, Al Jolson's "Me and My Shadow," Otis Blackwell's jazzy "Fever," "Gabriel's Message" (pop mix), Palestrina's soaring "Magnificat Primi Toni," Nat King Cole's "Straighten Up and Fly Right," Jerry Lieber/Mike Stoller's "Jailhouse Rock," "Good King Wenceslas," Orlando Gibbons' "O Clap Your Hands," Ben Folds' "The Luckiest," Gustav Holst's "Nunc Dimittis" and Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley's "Feeling Good." Be it Choral, Vocal Jazz, Pop, Classical Spiritual or whatever genre you'd care to put them in, Voces8 is one of the best a cappella groups we've ever heard. This arrangement of the well-known Basque carol was among the first to be written for us by our Arranger-in-Residence, Jim Clements. Mixing sonorous choral chords with soft accompanying lines, this setting finds both the glory and humility of the Angel's appearance to the Virgin. Such is the popularity of the arrangement that it has always formed an important part of the group's seasonal programming and is recorded on ouralbum, 'Christmas'.

A traditional melody with a fresh arrangement by Tony Alonso will be rewarding for your choir, pianist and flautist. Parts of the Magnificat text (in Latin) are interspersed. Excellent part writing-a beautiful anthem deserving of attention!
Arranger: Tony Alonso
Composer: Matthew Culloton
Notes from the composer: I see this carol as a scene: Mary sits in the dark when light gently breaks in the room as the angel Gabriel reveals himself and slowly unfolds his wings. (The opening phrase is meant to convey this.) The rest of the piece is essentially a quiet waltz of profound, inner joy between the angel and the maiden.
