The ABC's refreshingly varied song selection and clean, spirited harmonies are in ample evidence on "All Good People," beginning from the first exuberant cut, the Reggae tune "Don't Bend Down." 18 other gems follow: the 4-part "Missa Brevis," the Japanese work song "Ohisashi buri" (It's been a long time), the spiritual "Ezekiel Saw The Wheel," the lovely "When The Stars Fall," the salsa-flavored "Son de Camaguey," the raucous sea shanty "All For Me Grog," the heart-tugging "All Too Soon," "Double Shot," the spirited "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well," and the South African tune "Dubula." Each song surprises us with the energy and joy of singing of these talented boys. We have heard some of these songs before, but Amabile makes each one their own, the definitive version. "All Good People" is a treat, and winning CD #4 for Amabile! Songlist: Don't Bend Down, Missa Brevis-, -Kyrie, -Sanctus, -Gloria, Agnus Dei, Ohisashi Buri, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Un Flambeau, Jeannette Isabelle, When The Stars Fall, Ka hia manu, Elibama, Son de Camaguey, All For Me Grog, All Too Soon, Double Shot (Honey in the Rock), Jesus Met The Woman At The Well, Living In A Holy City, Dubula, God-Bless Wassail Boys Choir Of Harlem : Precious Lord....Take My Hand Harlem's finest, and one of America's finest boys' choirs, brings us a powerful collection of 14 authentic spirituals. The arrangements are by some of the best in the world. "Everytime I Feel the Spirit," "Go Down Moses," "Little David Play On Your Harp," "Ride On King Jesus" and "I Can Tell the World," all arranged by Moses Hogan, "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," arranged by William Dawson, "If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride," arranged by Robert Shaw, and a pair arranged by Howard Roberts, "Kumbaya My Lord" and "Oh Freedom," are a few of many favorites. Some light piano accompaniment, like on the lovely Don Sebesky-arranged "Amazing Grace," but mostly sweet, spirited a cappella. "Precious Lord" is inspirational and moving on many levels, given the accomplishments of Executive Producer J. Walter Turnbull and many others, molding and teaching the talented children of Harlem. Songlist: Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Go Down Moses, Children, Go Where I send Thee, Little David, Play On Your Harp, Ride On, King Jesus, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, I've Been Buked, If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride, Mary Was the Queen of Galilee, Amazing Grace, I Can Tell The World, Precious World, Kumbaya My Lord, Oh Freedom Concordia Choir : Endless Your Grace Renowned conductor/arranger (since 1986) of the Concordia Choir Rene Clausen's firm touch is clear on every note of "Endless Your Grace." For more than 80 years The mixed voice Concordia Choir has affirmed its reputation as one of nation's finest a cappella choirs. 16 wonderfully arranged songs are included in this inspirational, feel-good recording. The Moses Hogan-arranged "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "What A Wonderful World," "Come and Taste," "Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord," "Gracious Spirit," "This Little Light," the rousing spiritual "Ain't Got Time to Die," "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel," "Give Me Jesus" and "My God, How Wonderful Thou Art" are favorites, but "Endless" is an impressive, spirited treat throughout! Songlist: Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, What A Wonderful World, Come and Taste, His Voice, Black Is The Color of My True Love's Hair, Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord, Gracious Spirit, This Little Light, There Is A Balm in Gilead, Ain't Got Time To Die, Pilgrim's Hymn, Wondrous Love, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Give Me Jesus, My God, How Wonderful Thou Art, Beautiful Savior Delta Rhythm Boys : I Dreamt I Dwelt in Harlem The rise of groups like the Golden Gate Quartet took gospel music out of the conservative confines of the Black church, and opened the door for other groups who wanted to sing spirituals in a different way. One of the groups to achieve success in the more liberated climate was the Hampton Institute Quartet, who changed their name to the Delta Rhythm Boys, and were equally at home delivering a pop song as a gospel item. They teamed up with Ella Fitzgerald during the 1940s recording ban in America, when her career might have been put on hold. However much the gospel group might have been threatened with eternal damnation to even think about "La Cucaracha," their fearlessness, both musically and politically, is what made them one of the greats. 20 winners, and we can't decide which we like the best, pop tunes like "Little Lize," the sweet "It Was Wonderful Then," a swinging "La Cucaracha," the silly minstrel-show tune "Watermelon On The Vine," the hip "Gimme Some Skin" and "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me," or gospel hits like "Wait Till I Put On My Crown," a rocking "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Certainly Lord," "Mighty Day," and "Scandalize My Name" (which is actually more of a commentary on religious bigotry). There's a particularly fine, laid-back early version of "Georgia On My Mind," and the swinging title tune, the final cut, is a joy. All songs at least piano accompanied, recorded in NY in 1941. Songlist: LIttle Lize (I Love You), Keep On To Galilee, Wait Till I Put On My Crown, The Railroad Song, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Bugle Woogie, Do You Care, Conversation At Midnight, It Was Wonderful Then, La Cucaracha, Dry Bones, Certainly Lord, Mighty Day, Scandalize My Name, Watermelon On the Vine, Gimme Some Skin, It's So Peaceful in the Country, Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me, Georgia On My Mind, I Dreamt I Dwelt in Harlem Denver A Cappella Project : Beyond Ordinary This Colorado-based evenly-mixed voice a cappella octet was formed in 1999, and has a varied repertoire ranging from Jazz to Pop, Classical and Gospel to Folk. "Beyond Ordinary's" 14 cuts highlight this versatility, beginning with Stefan Farrenkopf's deadpan "Easter Island Head," Jesse Harris' moody "Don't Know Why," Charles Sylvestri and Eric Whitacre's brooding , dissonant "Sleep," the nice Derric Johnson-arranged "Railroad Medley," a bluesy, rhythmic "Route 66," traditional favorites "Amazing Grace" and "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," Greg Jasperse's ethereal "Voice Dance," Lennon/McCartney's "Lady Madonna," the Moses Hogan-arranged spiritual "Elijah Rock," and finishing strong with the traditional "All Creatures of Our God and King." DACP has three excellent recordings and years of live performances under their belts, and it shows. Sweet harmonies, solid vocal percussion, deep basslines, spirited leads-this is fun stuff from this talented octet! Songlist: Easter Island Head, Don't Know Why, Sleep, Where the Sun Will Never Go Down, Railroad Medley, Route 66, Amazing Grace, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Voice Dance, Witness, Lady Madonna, Take On Me, Elijah Rock, All Creatures of Our God and King The Gas House Gang : The Gas House Gang's 5th In 1987 a St. Louis, MO municipal band was looking for a barbershop group to sing "Lida Rose" for the "Music Man" section of their Broadway tribute. When no local groups were available, Rob Henry found three friends to sing with him. The four loved the sound, came up with a name, and the group is still together sixteen years, thirteen countries, forty nine states, five recordings and an international championship later. Sadly, Rob contracted cancer and died this year after recording this fifth CD with the group, it is dedicated with love to him. The GHG sings with a lot of feeling, humor, and ringing harmonies that take our breath away. Beethoven 5.1, the opening cut, is a seven-minute tour-de-force with wonderful, funny, personal lyrics that go on for four pages. eleven more songs: the 70's summer anthem "Lazy Day," Lennon/McCartney's "Blackbird/I Will" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Goodbye,World, Goodbye," "My Coloring Book," "We're Little But Were Loud," "Great Day," Carole King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?", "Ezekiel Saw The Wheel," Billy Joel's "Lullabye" and the inspirational "Hold On." The GHG is our best-selling barbershop group, and with good reason. Highly recommended! Songlist: Beethoven 5.1, Lazy Day, Blackbird/I Will, Goodbye, World, Goodbye, My Coloring Book, We're Little But We're Loud, Great Day, Will You Love Me Tomorrow?, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel), Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Hold On Hi-Lo's : Happen To Bossa Nova / Happen to Folk Songs Here, in their full glory, are the first two releases the group recorded on Reprise. This is classic stuff as these vocal masters explore two different musical genres with their usual sophistication and expertise. They use the most difficult form of voice pattern. Unlike many vocal groups, which keeps to intervals of thirds fifths and ninths, The Hi-Lo's apply intricate harmonies, moving tones, and suspended chord intervals using about every altered degree of the solmization scale in their arrangements. There are many gems including the practically a cappella "Black Is The Color of My True Love's Hair" featuring a rare solo exquisitely sung by Clark Burroughs and most of the vocal arrangements are by the man himself, Gene Puerling. The majority of these tracks have not been previously released on CD making this a great addition to all of their fans collection. Includes original LP art work and liner notes. Songlist: Carnaval, The Gift, Let's Go To Brasil, A New Dream, Gold Brazillian Sun, One Note Samba, The Duck ( O Pato ), Cry Your Sadness, Desafinado, Once Again, Love and The Rose, No More Brasil, Sixteen Tons, Turkey In The Straw, Careless Love, Cotton Fields, Black Is The Color of My True Loves Hair, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Yellow Rose of Texas, Michael, Gotta Travel On, Cockles and Mussels, On Top Of Old Smokey Iowa State Singers : Choral Spectrum 3 "Choral Spectrum III" is the last in a remarkable choral trilogy by Iowa State's most select undergraduate choral ensemble, 19 songs from the Singers' repertoire from 2007-2008. The group's emphasis on a cappella renditions of classical Christian pieces is well-represented by "Si ch'io vorrei morire" by Monteverdi, Heinrich Schutz' "Ich bin die Auferstehung," Hans Leo Hassler's "Dixit Maria," Igor Stravinsky's "Ave Maria," Herbert Howells' "Requiem aeternam I," Peter Warlock's "Benedicamus Domino," Frank Martin's "Sanctus Benedictus" and others. A pair of Moses Hogan-arranged spirituals number among our favorites, "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel" and "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," as well as the lovely John Rutter-arranged "Black Sheep," Eric Whitacre's lovely "Lux Aurumque," a pair by Johannes Brahms, "Warum ist das Licht gegeben" and "Tafellied," Gyogy Ligeti's stunning, manic "Reggel," and Guido Lopez-Gavilan's spirited "El Guayaboso." This is difficult, demanding material, but the Singers handle it with effortless grace. An impressive, beautiful collection by one of the best choral ensembles we have heard! Songlist: Si ch'io vorrei morire, Ich bin die Auferstehung, Dixit Maria, Ave Maria, Requiem aeternam I, Reggel, Warum ist das Licht gegeben, Tafellied, All this Night My Heart Rejoices, El Guayaboso, Black Sheep, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Quem vidistis pastores, Lux Aurumque, Benedicamus Domino, Sanctus-Benedictus, The Sweetheart of the Sun, Seek Not Afar for Beauty, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel Kantorei : The Road Home - Folk Songs and Spirituals Denver-based 36 mixed-voice semiprofessional choir Kantorei has grown from a group of six friends singing carols in 1997 to a respected group that has appeared at Carnegie Hall for the National ACDA Conference, and been conducted by Rene Clausen in a premiere performance of his work. Esteemed director Richard Larson has been a major factor in the group's rise. "Home" is the group's fifth very good CD, and is a collection of 21 folk songs and spirituals. Picking favorites is not easy, there are excellent solos on "Let Me Fly ," "Dere's No Hidin' Place," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel " and "City Called Heaven." Folk tunes "Black is the Color," "Danny Boy," and "Wearing of the Green " are wonderful. And we can't forget the four tunes arranged by the late Moses Hogan, "The Battle of Jericho" "You Better Min' How You Talk ," "I Can Tell the World" and "My Soul's Been Anchored." Another winner for Kantorei! Recommended. Songlist: Let Me Fly, Dere's No Hidin' Place, Oh, Shenandoah, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Black is the Color, If I Got My Ticket, My Lord, What a Mornin', The Battle of Jericho, You Better Mi' How You Talk, I Can Tell the World, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, City Called Heaven, I Got Shoes, I Believe This Is Jesus, Danny Boy, Wearing of the Green, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, God Is Seen, Wade in the Water, My Soul's Been Anchored Luther College Nordic Choir : A New Hosanna Decorah, Iowa's Luther College can boast 7 choirs (and 8 bands and orchestras) among its nearly 1,000 student musicians, but none older or more famous than the Nordic Choir, founded in 1946. While shedding light on the human condition, the music simultaneously celebrates the deeply rooted spirit of survival and hope. Their vision is "To heal our world through music and words;" their mission "to connect one another through choral theater, education and musical excellence." "Tell the World" has 17 live cuts, some of them accompanied by keyboards, piano, bass, drums and percussion. Particularly fine are the a cappella Spiritual "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," "Deep River," "My God is Good/Angels of the Earth" medley, the a cappella Spirituals "I Can Tell the World" and "On the Battlefield for My Lord" and "All My Trials;" "Witness," "Stand By Me," "Wade in de Water," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Worthy to Be Praised." "Tell the World" is everything we were hoping to hear, powerful, spirited, inspirational music from one of our favorite ensembles, The Choral Project! Songlist: Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Blow Ye The Trumpet, 23rd Psalm, Deep River, My God Is Good/Angels Of The Earth, I Can Tell The World, On The Battlefield For My Lord, All My Trials, My Soul's Been Anchored, Witness, Ain'-a That Good News, Stand By Me, We Let It Be, Wade In De Water, God Is All There Is, The Battle Of Jericho, Worthy To Be Praised Tuskegee Institute Choir - William Dawson : Spirituals The Tuskegee (Alabama) Institute Choir, whose first singers were organized by school founder Booker T. Washington, is steeped in more than a century of pride and the richest of choral traditions. Booker insisted on the singing of African American spirituals by everyone at the weekly chapel worship services, a tradition that continues today. The Choir's most renowned director, composer and education William L. Dawson led the Choir into a new era in 1932, with their appearance at the opening of Radio City Music Hall in NYC, which would lead to performances before Presidents, radio and television audiences and worldwide prestige. There are 15 spirituals here, with innovative arrangements, powerful harmonies and solos; all sung with deep feeling and spirit. Simply the best versions we've heard of classic standards "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Deep River," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Ev'ry Time I Hear the Spirit," "Were You There," "Ain'a That Good News," "Mary Had A Baby" "King Jesus is A-Listening" and "Rockin' Jerusalem." One of the best, most authentic Gospel CDs of the year, by one of America's oldest and most respected Gospel choirs! Songlist: Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Deep River, I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray, There Is A Balm In Gilead, Hail Mary, I've Been 'Buked, Behold The Star, Ev'ry Time I Hear The Spirit, Were You There?, I Want To Be Ready, Listen To The Lambs, Ain'a That Good News, Mary Had A Baby, King Jesus Is A'Listening, Rockin' Jerusalem Vocal Union : We've Got To Sing The Vocal Union is back with their second recording. Because the 1999 group's line-up has only one member still singing with them who is on this recording (Gary Miller), we'll take the time to mention their names. Along with Gary are Keith Lancaster, Gary Moyers, Gary Miller, John Laws, Roy Hawkins, Darin Cochran, Robert Orr and Paul Kennamer Jr. As in the first Vocal Union recording the group sticks close to its Southern Gospel roots, using close harmony and traditional 'old time' singing. Eight voices give the music its choral fullness, rather than overdubbing or studio techniques. In fact, it isn't until the last song that Keith Lancaster breaks down and adds just a bit of his 'sound' to the mix. By no means does this mean the songs are sedate. Though four square is in evidence, there are touches of doo-wop sneaking in occasionally, along with a bluegrass element. Songlist: Can He, Could He, Would He, He Will Lead His Children Home, There Never Was a Pulpit Like The Cross, I Sing The Mighty Power Of God, Rumor Mill, He Looked Beyond My Fault, A Wonderful Time Up There, Don't Scatter Roses, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Sing With Our Hearts Wings Over Jordan : Trying to Get Ready Reverend Glynn T. Settle was the originator of the Wings over Jordan Choir (WOJC), which on the public scene in the late 1930s, the first full-time professional black choir in America. Proficient and versatile, during the period 1938 to 1949, the choir performed before sold-out, non-segregated audiences in over 40 American states, 5 European countries, Canada and Mexico. In 1937 the choir inaugurated a successful weekly "Negro Hour" on CBS Radio in Cleveland, reaching 40 million listeners. WOJC's segment of spirituals would be followed by the Southernaires Quartet, and then the Golden Gate Quartet. A songbook was published and over 50 recordings came from this program, performances with major symphonic orchestras and an invitation to sing at the White House. Reverend Settle narrates in this rare collection, saying things like "It's not because I'm a coward and afraid to defend myself that I smilingly take the many abuses forced upon me through life. The fact is, I pity and pray for those who despitefully mistreat me. You may wonder about my attitude. Well, the answer is very simple. I am busy trying to get ready to try on my long white robe." Gospel Friend records is releasing this wonderful collection of 25 authentic spirituals, accompanied by fascinating pictures and text in the liner notes (one of our favorites is several members of the group all dressed up in front of their spanking-new tour bus, "Wings Over Jordan" proudly on the front). There are several spirituals we are hearing for the first time, such as "The Old Ark's A-Movering," "My Lord's Gonna Move This Wicked Race," the joyous "I Just Got Over," "Meet You at the Judgement," "Trampin'," "Over My Head" and others. And then there are tunes we've heard many times, such as "Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham," "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel," "Wade in the Water," "Old Ship of Zion" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," but it's as if we are hearing them for the first time. "Trying to Get Ready" is a treat on many levels, from beginning to end. Don't miss this one! Songlist: Walk Together Children, Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham, Don't Stay Away, I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray, Trying to Get Ready, The Old Ark's A-Movering, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Wade In The Water, I Just Got Over, Meet You at the Judgement, Plenty Good Room, Trampin', Old Ship of Zion, I'm A-Rollin, When You Come out of the Wilderness, My Lord's Gonna Move This Wicked Race, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Until I Found the Lord, I've Been 'Buked, I'm Going to Sit at the Welcome Table, Over My Head, Where Shall I Be When the First Trumpet Sounds, Amen, He's All and All to Me |
