The song continued the transformation of the Beatles from a mainly rock and roll / pop-oriented act to a more experimental, studio-based band. With a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin and striking lyrics about loneliness, "Eleanor Rigby" broke sharply with popular music conventions, both musically and lyrically. Richie Unterberger of Allmusic cites the band's "singing about the neglected concerns and fates of the elderly" on the song as "just one example of why the Beatles' appeal reached so far beyond the traditional rock audience".
Release Date: 1966 on the album Revolver

They remain the most popular group of all time and for very good reason as their songs are timeless gems that will be pleasing audiences for many generations. Well-suited for close harmony treatment these songs are great fun to sing. Songlist: Michelle, Eleanor Rigby, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Beatles Sunshine Medley Various Arrangers : Men's Jazz 1 The arrangement of 'Bye, Bye, Blackbird' is a rubato ballad version of this pretty, old song. There is some re-harmonizaton, but overall the chords remain pretty square. You will find much opportunity to interpret phrasing as you like. The infectious original chart, 'Love Will Find a Way' starts out with a bed of close harmonies that explodes into a funk groove, highlighting a tenor solo. After the ensemble is featured in the bridge, the arrangement moves up a whole step. There is plenty of room for soloing as the tune moves through the chorus and ends with a thick-textured finish. The perfect showcase for your men. The 8-part arrangement of 'Eleanor Rigby' challenges the singer without detracting from the great lyrics. The first two verses can be baritone solos or the entire baritone section in unison. The third verse incorporates some unison and some unusual chord substitutions. The tenor 1 part is mostly in the falsetto range. The tenor 2 part usually falls in the head voice range and is all harmony. Works well as a showcase piece or closer for a male group with strong part-singing skills. Songlist: Love Will Find A Way, Bye, Bye Blackbird, Eleanor Rigby Various Arrangers : Sing the Beatles Vol 2 The Beatles iconic song "Eleanor Rigby" from 1966 in a stunning a cappella setting that crosses boundaries between pop, jazz and concert choral in a spectacular fashion! This arrangement is breathtaking! Your choir will love to explore the sounds and rhythms and textures of a cappella music with this accessible arrangement of the classic Beatles song "Girl" also from 1966. Great solo showcase, too! Rhythmic vitality infuses this a cappella setting of the 1964 #1 hit "Can't Buy Me Love" that is sure to become an audience and singer favorite! The Beatles classic "Drive My Car" is given a modern a cappella twist by noted arranger Deke Sharon. Songlist: Drive My Car, Eleanor Rigby, Girl Yumiko Matsuoka : Collection Volume 2 The Lennon-McCartney classic "Eleanor Rigby" retains some of the flavor of the original Beatles' arrangement intact by giving the background vocals a string-like texture in the opening section. It then goes through a couple of key changes and gives different parts an opportunity to sing the melody, while the background supports with strong harmony and interesting counterlines. Arranged for a cappella quintet Vox One, the classic "Danny Boy" song showcases a soprano solo. In the middle section, the alto and tenor parts weave a line reminiscent of a brook in a green field of Ireland. Lush, complex harmony and a dramatic build-up reward both the singes and the audience. Recorded on Vox One's, Chameleon. The national anthem is treated here with solemn but inspirational sound. The rich harmony, without going too far away from the original, builds to a climax with contrapuntal lines that make it interesting for the singers. Written for the New York-based group the Western Wind, Yumiko's arrangement of 'Where Is Love?' opens with a mezzo/alto feature backed by flowing lines reminiscent of a small string ensemble. After the interlude, the melody is passed onto different parts with a surprise ending that involves a couple of tonality changes. Written for a cappella quintet Vox One's comeback album of the same title, 'Pure Imagination' features a soprano solo with the background vocals that re-creates the dreamy world of Willy Wonk'a Chocolate Factory. Come and explore the harmony and texture that builds up to a fantastic climax. It will make you want to watch and savor the movie once again. That's the overwhelming impression we get when listening to the Accidentals. Where other groups may be vocal bands, the voices in the Accidentals act more as if they were sections of an orchestra, each weaving a thread into the larger tapestry of song. What is even more amazing is that each of the voices can be heard clearly and individually, even on those rare moments when more than two members are creating a chorus! All in all they sing some of the most complex arrangements in all of acappelladom. Now how about the tunes? We are treated to a sense of the complexities of life itself in a new composition by Dennis Deal, "The Horizon." There are a couple musical doffs of the cap to their hometown, New York City. But wait, turn up the volume and be prepared to be blown away by a marvelous arrangement of "Eli's Comin'" which infuses a brand new spirit into a tune which was becoming a cliche. Humor...did we mention the great sense of humor. It's pretty sophisticated stuff for although there are verbal jibes at reality which are a crack-up, the music itself is a co-conspirator to making one slide from chuckles to guffaws. Try "Beatnik" for a musical joke extroadinaire in which the singer's biography goes from too cool to...no no no we won't give it away. On another tune you will discover for yourself the context of the phrase, "...pucker up sucker and kiss the world goodbye!" You'll laugh, you'll cry, it's beautiful, it's funny, you'll be beguiled by one of the best a cappella albums of the new millennium! Songlist: The Horizon, Autumn In New York, Eli's Comin', Beatnick, City of Angels, I Love New York, The More I See You, Never Never Land, Somebody's Out There, Eleanor Rigby, Loves Me Like A Rock, Where or When Chapter 6 : With the Windows Down We have had a number of memorable opportunities to become major fans of Illinois-based, 7-man Chapter 6 since their founding at Decatur, IL's Millikin University in 2001. They were Harmony Sweeps Chicago Regional Champs 3 times, giving us dynamite live sets at the Finals, where signature tunes like "Ode to Krispy Creme," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Wizard of Oz Medley" led to standing O's and their being named National Champions in 2004. "With The Windows Down" is the sixth Chapter 6 recording in the PAC catalog, each of them featuring the group's cutting edge arrangements and flawless a cappella harmonies. The first of our favorites of these 12 tunes are a pair of mellow originals written by Mark Grizzard, master arranger, "There I Go" and "Highway," and one by Nathan Pufall, the poignant "I Wanted to Say." Then we have to choose several Grizzard-arranged covers, "Pinball Number Count," "Change the World," the best version of Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" we've heard, Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," Sylvester Stewart's 5th Dimension hit, "Hot Fun in the Summertime," "Peg" and the soaring, delicious "Clocks." Rich harmonies, deep, powerful, "walking-bass" vocal percussion, perfect, spirited leads-this is a cappella heaven from a group that simply keeps getting better at what they love to do. "With The Windows Down" is a joy from the first cut to the last! Songlist: Pinball Number Count, Change The World, Eleanor Rigby, Holly Oak, There I Go, Mercy Mercy Me, I've Known You All My Life, Highway, I Wanted to Say, Peg, Hot Fun in the Summertime, Clocks Male Ensemble Northwest : Sweet Rivers 14-strong M.E.N. was formed in Longview, Washington in 1982, by choral musician and educator Howard Meharg. His mission was "to celebrate the art of male choral singing, to inspire men of all ages to musical artistry, and to encourage young men in leadership and example among their colleagues in music." The ensemble has been honored by invitations to sing as state, regional and national conventions of the ACDA. Unique among male choruses, each member of Male Ensemble Northwest is a conductor as well as an outstanding vocal musician. There are 13 richly harmonic tunes here, some of our favorites are some spiritual tunes, "Shout for Joy," "Alleluia," "When I Hear The Trumpet Sound," "City Called Heaven;" and Andrew Crouch's "Soon and Very Soon" (arranged by Randy Crenshaw); a pair of Lennon/McCartney songs, "I Will" and "Eleanor Rigby;" 5 Celtic Folk songs by Vijay Singh, "Timor et Tremor," "Fergus an' Molly," "Lament of a Fisher's Wife" and the delightful "Finnan Haddie;" "Sweet Rivers" and the lovely, traditional "Irish Blessing." There is occasional light piano and guitar accompaniment, but the voices, with their rich, bright harmonies, are the focus here. Powerful, beautiful material from this talented, veteran men's chorus! Songlist: Timor et Tremor, Shout for Joy, Alleluia!, Sweet Rivers, When I Hear the Trumpet Sound, City Called Heaven, Fergus an' Molly, Lament of a Fisher's Wife, Finnan Haddie, Soon and Very Soon, I Will, Eleanor Rigby, Irish Blessing Overboard : Help! Boston's all-male professional a cappella sextet Overboard put on an incredible show at the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals in San Rafael this month (in fact, it was the strongest field we have ever seen, and a tremendous show!). Group member, arranger, producer and tracker Nick Girard took on the massive task of rearranging 12 of Lennon & McCartney's most beloved hits from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "The White Album," using only vocal percussion and faux instruments (yes, that includes faux harp at the beginning of "She's Leaving Home!). "In My Life," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Taxman" (which segues into "I Saw Her Standing There"), "Something," "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," "Come Together," "Good Day Sunshine," "When I'm 64," "The Fool on the Hill" - Overboard nails every one of them, seemingly effortlessly. "Help!" is a tour de force, an a cappella masterpiece by a group fast on its way to stardom! Songlist: In My Life, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Taxman, Something, Got to Get You Into My Life, She's Leaving Home, She Came In Through the Bathroom Window, Come Together, Good Day Sunshine, When I'm Sixty-Four, For No One, The Fool On The Hill, Hello Goodbye, I Saw Her Standing There (reprise), The Long and Winding Road, A Day In the Life, Eleanor Rigby, Good Night, Help!, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight, Getting Better, Get Back, The End/In My Life (reprise) Storm Front : Harmony - Beatles Tribute Just prior to taking home Bronze (3rd place) medals from the 2009 BHS Internationals in Anaheim, Storm Front released this amazing collection of Beatles tunes. Working with gifted arranger (and Gold medal barbershop quartet man) Jay Giallombardo, these are arrangements that remain honest to the original scores, but fit a world-class a cappella quartet. Many of the great Lennon/McCartney hits are here, "Eleanor Rigby," "Here, There and Everywhere," "Lady Madonna," "Norweigian Wood," "Across the Universe," "Fool on the Hill," "We Can Work It Out," "Hey Jude," "Paperback Writer," "I'll Follow the Sun" and "Long and Winding Road," rendered with brilliant Storm Front harmonies that give them a whole new flavor. "Beatles Tribute" is a Barbershop masterpiece, one of the best albums of the year. Major kudos to Storm Front's Jeff, Jim, Darin and Sid for pushing the Barbershop envelope with "Beatles Tribute"! Songlist: Eleanor Rigby, Here, There And Everywhere, Lady Madonna, Norwegian Wood, Across the Universe, The Fool On The Hill, We Can Work It Out, Hey Jude, Paperback Writer (VP-Mike Davidson), I'll Follow the Sun, The Long and Winding Road Yumiko Matsuoka : To Every Thing There Is A Season Founder of legendary Boston-based Vocal Jazz group Vox One, Yumiko has always been one of our favorite vocalists and arrangers. She has two excellent collections of arrangements in the PAC catalog, "Collection Vol. 1" and "Collection Vol. 2." The Anthology "To Every Thing" is her first solo album, and it includes a piece Yumiko wrote for acoustic guitar for some friends' wedding, "Tsubasa," her arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," performed by the Western Wind with Yumiko, and her marvelous arrangements of the English Traditional tunes "Scarborough Fair," "Black is the Color" and the title tune, performed by Boston Jazz Voices. The Western Wind also shines on Yumiko's arrangements of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love" and Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby." Yumiko's classically accompanied arrangement of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," her lovely arrangement of Joanie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," performed by Syncopation; and the Scottish Traditional "Skye Boat Song," performed by Yumiko with the women of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, are all favorites. "To Every Thing" is a remarkable collection, highlighting the tremendous vocal, arranging and composing talents of Vocal Jazz master Yumiko! Songlist: Tsubasa (wings), And So It Goes, Scarborough Fair, Brett, Where Is Love?, Black Is The Colour, Blowin' In The Wind, Eleanor Rigby, To Every Thing There Is A Season, Georgia On My Mind, Both Sides Now, Skye Boat Song |
