Hits such as "Rum and Cola," "Don't Fence Me In" (with Bing Crosby), "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and the title track were standard issue back then, and Maxene, Laverne and Patricia captured the spirit of the nation. Their balmy, lilting style (reminiscent of the Boswell Sisters before them), can be saucy one moment ("Strip Polka," "Shoo, Shoo Baby") or sweetly romantic ("Near You," "Toolie Oolie Doolie") with equal charm. Accompanied, with the big band swing arrangements popular at the time, though on a few tracks - "Apple Blossom Time" in particular - the instruments are muted and almost insignificant. Songlist: I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time, Joseph, Joseph!, Ti-Pi-Tin, Begin the Beguine, Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!, Say "Si, Si" (Para Vigo Me Voy), The Woodpecker Song, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, The Shrine of St Cecilia, Three Little Sisters, Strip Polka, Pistol Packin' Mama, Shoo, Shoo, Baby, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?, Don't Fence Me In, Rum and Coca-Cola, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive, Along the Navajo Trail, South America, Take It Away, Near You, Civilization (Bongo Bongo Bongo), Toolie Oolie Doolie (the Yodel Polka), Underneath the Arches Heart of Texas Chorus : Great American Cowboy Pride of San Marcos, TX, the 68-strong all-male Heart of Texas Chorus treats us to a fine collection of 14 Cowboy tunes. Some of our favorites are Cole Porter's classic "Don't Fence Me In," Barbershop quartet Sterling singing Garth Brooks' inspiring "The River," hot arranger Jay Giallombardo adds much-needed lyrics to Rossini's "William Tell Overture," Irving Mills and Luchy Millinder's "Ride, Red, Ride," The Sons of the Pioneers' "Cool Water," "If They String Me Up I'll Never Live It Down/Back in the Saddle Again Medley," the traditional folk tune "Home on the Range" and "Texas Medley." The title tune, sung by the Chorus with Sterling, is accompanied by BuffaloGrass and "Texas (When I Die)," sung by Barbershop quartet Four Brothers, has a little violin, and "Cool Water" some guitar-the rest is richly-harmonied a cappella. A big, fun, testosterone-soaked album from the Heart of Texas! Songlist: Great American Cowboy, Don't Fence Me In, The River, Bury Me Not on the Lone Praire, William Tell Overture, Texas (When I Die), Shenandoah, Ride, Red, Ride, I'm A Wild And Wooly Son of the West, Cool Water, If They String Me Up I'll Never Live It Down/ Back In The Saddle Again Medley, Wahoo, Home On The Range, Texas Medley Mitch Miller and the Gang : Sing Along With Mitch Here's a fine rerelease of the hit LP that had many across the nation singing along. Pop this recording in the car CD player and sing your way to work!! Songlist: That Old Gang Of Mine, Down By The Old Mill Stream, By The Light Of The Silvery Moon, You Are My Sunshine, Till We Meet Again, Let The Rest Of The World Go By, Sweet Violets, I've Got Sixpence/I've Been Working On, The Railroad/That's Where My Money Goes, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Don't Fence Me In, There Is A Tavern In The Town/Show Me The Way To Go Home, Bell Bottom Trousers/Be Kind To Your Web-Footed Friends Storm Front : The Road to Gold 2010 International Barbershop Harmony Society Champs Storm Front describe as: "Three years, Nine contest sets, One Gold Medal. Enjoy Storm Front's journey on "The Road to Gold!" The group's extensive use of humor and parody, particularly directed at the process they have had to go through to finally win are a big reason why they have consistently been judged in the top ten. They placed sixth in Nashville in 2008, singing Showstopper parodies "The Champs are Coming Back," "We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place," and the hilarious "Don't Ask Me Why;" third in Anaheim in 2009, where they unleashed their "Medal Come Back" parody, the ludicrous "Lida Rose/Dream of Now" medley, and their Finalist "Top Ten Parody;" and Philadelphia 2010, where their "Wonderful World" costumes, the contest rule "Anything Goes" parody and the manic Jukebox "Jukebox Saturday Night Medley (Car Song)" montage gave them their coveted Gold Medals! Although some of the inside Barbershop jokes went over our heads, as these are all live cuts, it's clear they all hit the judges and audiences right in their BHS funny bones. There are two discs here: Disc 1 has all six songs from their Finals performances in 2008 and 2009, and Disc 2 has all six songs from their incredible win in 2010. Several songs, such as the totally silly "Where or When," "Don't Fence Me In," "Lida Rose," and "We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place," are repeated, sometimes more than once. Wonderful harmonies, ringing, incredible closing chords, very funny, creative material-it all adds up to great entertainment, and, happily, finally, to Gold for Storm Front! Songlist: The Champs Are All Coming Back, Don't Fence Me In, Where or When, Comes Love, We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place, Don't Ask Me Why, Medal Come Back To Me, Where or When, Don't Fence Me In, Lida Rose, Stay Awake, Top 10 Parody, Where or When, What A Wonderful World, Lida Rose, Anything Goes, We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place, Jukebox Saturday Night Medley (Car Song) |
