Between classical music and folk-world music of the eastern countries; like the successful Mysteries of the Bulgarian Voice with its antique, pre-Christian and Hellenistic roots, the Choir interprets with grace the songs of Western heritage: Silent Night, Tino Rossi's Petit Papa Noel, Jingle Bells, Schubert's Ave Maria and more. A new discovery of these Christmas songs' heritage for every age. Songlist: Silent Night, Hey Maiden, A Virgin Is Bearing Today, Get Up, Host, Jingle Bells, Foom, Foom, Le Petit Papa Noel, It Will Snow, Ostinato, Dignity, Glorify, Ave Maria, In Suffers is Bearing Mother Mary, Many Years, The First Noel, Deck The Halls, We Wish You A Merry Christmas Cantus : Tidings "Cantus" is an eleven member all-male group hailing from St. Olaf's College in Minnesota. Their holiday disc includes many traditional favorites, such as "Coventry Carol," "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," and "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" and an original version of "Deck the Halls" (done in 5/4, with jazzy harmonies??, a definite departure from the style on the rest of the recording). "Riu, Riu, Chiu," sung in Spanish, and accompanied by appropriate percussion, accented like a russian song (ask the group about this.) The recording, made in a church, adds atmosphere and presence to the group's own melliflous blend; the notes "float" effortlessly as if weightless. The classically-trained voices are well-suited to the sacred material, the sound of which conveys allegiance to its origin centuries ago. A calming shelter from the Christmas frenzy. Songlist: Veni, Veni Emmanuel, O Magnum Mysterium, Riu, Riu Chiu, Gabriels' Message, Salvation Is Created, Alleluia, Hail Mary, Lo, How A Rose E're Blooming, O Holy Child, Coventry Carol, Suo-Gan, I Wonder As I Wander, God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, I Saw Three Ships, Deck The Halls, Silent Night Cantus : Comfort and Joy Vol 2 Minneapolis/St. Paul's ten-strong, all-male Cantus has impressed us with their excellent earlier recordings and continue to do so with "Comfort and Joy: Volume Two," their second Christmas recording. Song selection and arrangements (and, for that matter, the elegant liner notes) are particularly fine here. Little-known pieces like "Puer natus in Bethlehem," Omnis mundus jucundetur," "Four Carols" by Halsey Stevens," Wm. Dawson's "Hail Mary," the Plainchant "Hodie Christus natus est," the Georgian wassailing song "Alilo," Ariel Ramirez' "Los Reyes Magos" and Babatunde Olatunji's "Betelehemu" with the more traditional carols like "Go Tell it On the Mountain," the French carol "Masters In This Hall," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," "Riiu Riu Chiu," and an almost unrecognizable arrangement of "Deck the Halls." Some percussion and accompaniment. Consistent throughout are the powerful harmonies of Cantus, one of our favorite male ensembles. Songlist: Puer natus in Bethlehem, Omnis mundus jucundetur, Four Carols, All This Night Shrill Chanticleer, What Sweeter Music, As I Out Rode This Enderes Night, A Virgin Most Pure, Hail Mary, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Hodie Christmas naatus est, Masters in this Hall, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Alilo, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Los Reyes Magos, Bethlehemu, Deck The Halls Caroling Company : The Carols of Alfred S Burt Founded by Alfred Burt's daughter Diane, The Caroling Company makes everyday Christmas! This highly in-demand eight-voice a cappella ensemble has had numerous television appearances including ABC's "Good Morning America and "The Home Show" and will appear later this year in the Brian Setzer Big Band Christmas CD. With a reputation for excellence and creative arrangements of traditional favorites and jazz standards, they have an enthusiastic following and possess that indescribable quality that identifies them as The Carolling Company. Songlist: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas / I'll Be HOme for Christmas (Medley), Carol of the Bells, Deck the Halls, The Holly and the Ivy, What Child Is This?, I Saw Three, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, O Holy Night, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Silver Bells, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Merry Christmas, Darling, Caroling, Caroling, We'll Dress the House, Some Children See Him, This Is Christmas, The Star Carol, Come, Dear Children, Jesu Parvule, O Hearken Ye, Silent Night Chicago Voice Exchange : CVXmas CVX has wowed us from more than one Harmony Sweepstakes Finals stage, and this is their raucous, more than slightly irreverent, fun Christmas CD! 14 songs: "Jingle Bells," a jazzy, driving "Carol O' Bells," the Beach Boys' "Little St. Nick," "We Three Kings," "Santa Claus" (who has whether you've been good or bad "on videotape"), a delightfully oily "Mr. Grinch," "Deck The Hall," "Mistletoe and Holly," "Holly Jolly Christmas," the requisite "Rudolph," "Silent Night," the hilarious "Walkin' Round In Women's Underwear" ("Later on, if ya wanna, we can dress like Madonna"),the raunchy, macho "Better Open Up My Present," and finally "Feliz Navidad," which becomes the little-known Jewish carol--"Feliz Hannukah." This is a party Christmas CD--not for everyone, but then it doesn't try to be! Songlist: Jingle Bells, Carol O' Bells, Little St. Nick, We Three Kings, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Gabriel's Message, Deck The Halls, You're A Mean One Mr Grinch, White Christmas, Mistletoe and Holly, Holly Jolly Christmas, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Gloria In Excelsis, Silent Night, Walkin' Around, You'rd Better Open Up My Present, Feliz Navidad Choral Arts of Chattanooga : A Christmas Portrait Under the direction of Philip Rice this top-notch choir has accrued critical acclaim and as the only professional chorus in Tennessee has developed a series of highly successful performance seasons. This collection of Christmas music has a very special bonus as it features the world premiere of Dave Brubeck's arrangement of "We Three Kings" which is the icing on the cake of the fine recording. The recording was well produced and engineered and along with extensive color liner notes makes for a great holiday package. Songlist: O Magnum Mysterium, E'en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come, Ave Maria, Deck The Halls, There Shall A Star Come Out Of Jacob, Bring A Torch Jeanette Isabella, Ave Maria, The Angels And Shepherds, Coventry Carol, My Dancing Day, Ding Dong Merrily On High, Lirum Lirum, Fum Fum Fum, Infant Holy Infant Lowly, We Three Kings Coats : The Caroler One of the earliest "contemporary" a cappella groups the Coats are still performing and creating top-notch a cappella today as this excellent new holiday release demonstrates in spades. Almost half of the songs are group originals including the delightful title track and the clever arrangements (most by long-time member Jamie Dieveney) of the covers give the recording a decidedly refreshing sound. That sound is really quite diverse from the atmospheric "We Three Kings" to the upbeat dance sound of "Put the Merry in Merry Christmas" to the almost calypso "Joy Medley". An excellent Christmas CD that you will play for many Christmases to come. Songlist: The Caroler, Do You Hear What I hear, Let it Snow, While By Our Sheep, Cookies, Put the Merry in Merry Christmas, Lookin' After the Reindeer, Toy Medley, A Star to Follow, We Three Kings, The Christmas Story, Deck the Halls Elmer Iseler Singers : Welcome Yule! This recording features the contributions of several Canadians to the caroling genre, as composers of new carols and arrangers of old ones. From the perennially beautiful O Come All Ye Faithful and The Holly and the Ivy to the 14th century German Christmas Song, better known as "Joseph, lieber Joseph", this is a lively recording by one of Canada's most loved choirs. Derek Holman's rollicking arrangement of Deck the Halls shows off its insouciance by capturing an unmistakable tipsiness which very likely did accompany the decking of those particular halls. Two of the arranged carols are especially notable: The Huron Carol, known as Canada's first Christmas Carol (1642), is sung here in Robert Anderson's arrangement; and a rare Nova Scotia variant of the Cherry Tree Carol collected by Helen Creighton and arranged by Louis Applebaum. Songlist: O Come All Ye Faithful, The Echo Carol, The Holly And The Ivy, Noel Cest L'Amour, Good Christian Men Rejoice, Mary Is A Lady Bright, Welcome Yule, Lullaby For The Christ Child, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, A Canadian Christmas Carol, The Huron Carol, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, Deck The Halls, Christmas Song Of The 14th Century, Masters In This Hall, What Is This Lovely Fragrance, Cherry Tree Carol `, Il Est Ne Divin Enfant, The Golden Vase Carol, Variations On The Sussex Carol, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Angelus ad Virginem, Away In A Manger, We Wish You A Merry Christmas Glasgow Phoenix Choir : Caledonian Christmas The Glasgow Phoenix Choir was founded in 1951 and since then has been at the forefront of popular choral music in Scotland and Beyond. "Caledonian Christmas" is the choir's second recording on the Scotdisc label and follows on from the highly successful "Highland Cathedral". The content is a mixture of seasonal Music old and new, Scottish favorites and other items in a diverse collection of songs which should evoke romantic, and wistful thoughts of Scotland at Christmas wherever you are. Songlist: Jingle Bells, The Very Best Time of Year, Twelve Days of Christmas, Christmas Song, Silent Night, Iona, Highland Cathedral, Caledonia, The Way Old Friends Do, Scotland, My Song, Medley: A Merry Little Christmas, Deck the Halls, Child in a Manger, Good King Wenceslas, Merry Christmas Jazz, The Little Drummer Boy, Farewell my Love, My Ain Folk, Auld Lang Syne Heart of Texas Chorus : Sing a Joyous Christmas The Heart of Texas Chorus, from San Marcos, TX, is directed by Ron Black, who has huge Barbershop Harmony credentials as a singer, judge, vocal coach and director. Powerful harmonies, richly-sung bass parts, soaring leads and fine arrangements make "Sing A Joyous Christmas" a winner that you can enjoy for years to come! Songlist: Do You Hear What I Hear?, Ding Dong Merrily On High, Hallelujah Chorus, Let All Mortal Flesh Be Silent, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Some Children See Him, Deck The Halls, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Jingle Bell Rock, Little Drummer Boy, We Three Kings, Winter Wonderland, O Holy Night, Mrs. Santa Claus, Joy To The World Johnny Mann Singers : We Wish You A Merry Christmas Legendary, Grammy-winning arranger/conductor Johnny Mann and his prolific Singers apply their bright, smooth, spirited Sixties sound to this excellent Christmas collection. Traditional carols like "As Lately We Watched," "Lo How a Rose," "Deck the Halls," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "O Christmas Tree," "The First Noel," and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" of course are here, wonderful and sincere; but we especially liked lesser known tunes like "Johnny Bring The Pine Tree In," "Sleep, Sleep Jesus, Sleep" and the lovely "Susan Belle." The kind of Christmas album they just don't make any more, and the kind that will be enjoyed again, year after year! Some light accompaniment, but mostly a cappella. Songlist: Johnny Bring The Pine Tree In, Sleep, Sweet Jesus, Sleep, As Lately Watched, Susan Belle, Lo How A Rose, Jingle Bells, Deck The Halls, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, Go Tell It On A Mountain, O Christmas Tree, The First Noel, We Wish You A Merry Christmas Les Sirenes Female Chamber Choir : There Is No Rose There Is No Rose explores a wealth of repertoire drawn from the compositional output for female voices, from a wonderful group of British composers. The first part of the CD celebrates the centenary of one of the most prolific British composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten, while the rest of the program includes such gems as an incredibly moving setting by Tarik O Regan of a poignant poem by Anglican priest-poet Mark Pryce, a world-premiere recording of the haunting Coventry Carol set for four-part female choir by Lionel Salter, and Elgar s The Snow, a real showpiece for Les Sirenes and one of the works that secured their place in the Grand Final of Choir of the Year 2012! Songlist: A Ceremony of Carols, Sweet was the Song, The Song of the Woman, The Oxen, Bring Rest, Sweet Dreaming Child, Coventry Carol, Jesu, Thou the Virgin-Born, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, A Lullaby for Becky, The Snow, Deck the Halls, Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day, A Merry Christmas New Tradition Chorus : A Holiday Tradition And now, ladies and gentlemen, up on the stage, resplendent in their "76 trombones" uniforms, the pride of Northbrook, Illinois, directed by Jay Giallombardo, current SPEBSQSA Chorus Champions New Tradition are here with a very strong new Christmas CD! Their recordings just keep getting better and better but this one clearly reaches a new high standard. The album includes favorites like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and more contemporary titles like "Come and See What's Happenin' in the Barn". Jay's arrangement of "Away in the Manger / Amazing Grace" is as soft and gentle as a newborn baby and "Christmas Rag" is just plain fun. Once known as the largest village in Wales, it has a long history of producing talented performers in all areas of the arts. Over the years, it has been home to two male voice choirs, a ladies' choir, a girls' choir, a mixed choir and a championship quality Silver Band. Rhos has been the birthplace of many top class musicians, actors and singers who have made significant contributions to Welsh culture not only as performers, but also as writers and composers. Many English, but some French, Spanish, Italian, German and the occasional American carol are included. In broad terms, carols were popular songs, and the original definition referred to a type of dance; remember, too, that Christmas was an adaptation of various pagan celebrations, an influence that can certainly be discerned in carols such as "Masters In This Hall," the sprightly rhythms of which are not meant to be listened to sitting down. Robert Shaw's various classical vocal ensembles are considered to be some of the finest in the world, and under his direction, earned many Grammy's and international acclaim. Songlist: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Angels We Have Heard on High, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, How Unto Bethlehem?, The Boar's Head Carol, O Tannenbaum, Masters in This Hall, My Dancing Day, Away in a Manger, Good Christian Men, Rejoice, The Holly and the Ivy, Good King Wenceslas, Wassail Song, Bring a Torch, Jeannete, Isabella, Fum, Fum, Fum, Mary Had a Baby, Hacia Belen va un borrico, Christ Was Born on Christmas Day, March of the Kings, Coventry Carol, Deck the Halls, The Cherry Tree Carol, We Three Kings of Orient Are, Touro-louro-louro!, So Blest a Sight, I Saw Three Ships, What Child Is This?, Susanni, In the Bleak Midwinter San Francisco Choral Artists : So Gracious Is The Time - An American Christmas A Christmas collection that attempts to narrow the gap between the music most performed (that written before 1900) and the vibrant work of living, working composers. "So gracious" the aptly-named Choral Artists combined beloved classics, fresh and original arrangements of traditional melodies, and some of their favorite (and previously unrecorded) works of Bay Area Composers. Favorites are Laurie Lee's powerful "Twelfth Night," Fenno Heath's flawless arrangements of "I Wonder as I Wander" and "What Child is This?," Herbert Bielawa's "Sweet Was the Song," William Billings' lilting, joyous "A Virgin Unspotted," "Ave Maria" and "Silent Night," both arranged by David Conte, Roger Nixon's 3-part "Wonders of Christmas" particularly "Christmas Greeting," Wm. Dawson's fine spiritual "Hail Mary!," John Stephenson's powerful "Milford" and Ruth Thornhill's "Snowfall," arranged by Gene Puerling. The eclectic and engaging "So gracious" touches, surprises and delights us with every song! Songlist: Twelfth Night, I Wonder As I Wander, What Child Is This, Sweet Was The Song, In The Bleak Midwinter, A Virgin Upspotted, Sanctus, Almighty Father, Ave Maria, Glory To God In The Highest, Ave Maria, Virga Jesse Flourit, O Magnum Mysterium, Ave Maria, Wonders Of Christmas, Milford, Sherburne, Hail Mary, Deck The Halls, Snowfall, Silent Night Seattle Children's Chorus : Seasons of Song Founded in 1989 by artistic director Kris Mason, the Seattle Children's Chorus brings us the choral sounds of 200 boys and girls, in four levels of choirs, raised in song. "Seasons of Song" is a wonderful holiday collection of 22 songs from the SCC's most beautiful live performances, many of them lightly piano and flute accompanied. The voices of the beginning younger children (Brio) shine on tunes such as "All That Is Good," "Une Poule Blanche" and Colligan's "Now I Walk In Beauty." The intermediate chorus, Intermezzo, shows their stuff on Nalan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Chilcott's "Sing You Now" and "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella;" and the advanced groups, Arioso and Camerata, easily handle more difficult, eclectic pieces like Pfautsch's "Consecrate the Place and Day," "Kyrie-Sanctus Benedictus from Mass No. 6" by Orban, the joyous a cappella "Sithi Jabula" by Nyberg, Nordqvist's "Wonderful Peace," Fissinger's "Make We Joy," Whitacre's "Lux Arumque" and Bach's "Prepare to Receive Him." These pieces are intermixed with more standard carols like "Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "Deck The Halls" and "The Little Drummer Boy" like treats in a holiday basket. "Seasons of Song" is a beautiful gift of sweet voices! Songlist: Consecrate The Place And Day, Kyrie-Sanctus-Benedictus From Mass no. 6, All That Is Good, Sithi Jabula, Les Berceaux, Dirait-on, Une Poule Blanche, The Colorado Trail, Al Shlosha D'varim, Now I Walk In Beauty, Sing You Now, Wonderful Peace, Make We Joy, Prepare to Recieve Him, Christmastide, Kling, Glockchen Kling!, Deck The Halls, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella, Ding Dong! Merrily on High, The Little Drummer Boy, Lux Arumque, Sunny Bank The Singers Unlimited : Christmas This 1972 recording continues to set musical precedent almost thirty years later. The combined voices of Don Shelton, Len Dresslar, Bonnie Herman and Gene Puerling are a sound so distinctive and recognizable that they have yet to be improved. From the six Alfred Burt carols to "Deck The Halls," "Good King Wenceslas" and Oh, Come All Ye Faithful," each song is beautifully constructed, a marriage of the traditional with the inimitable personality of Gene Puerling's arrangements. The result is accessible enough for the mainstream listener, and will also satisfy those hungry for heartier fare. Bonnie Herman frequently assumes the lead vocal duties, as on "Carol For Russian Children," her warm tone a sunbeam on a wintry day - listen to the pedal note (uncharacteristically in the treble part) she holds during the coda - amazing color and control. One of our most recommended selections. Songlist: Deck The Halls, Ah Bleak & Chill The Wintry Wind, Bright, Bright The Holly Berries, Jesu Parvule, Caroling, Caroling, What Are The Signs, Nigh Bethlehem, While By My Sheep, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Silent Night, Joy To The World, Wassail Song, Carol Of The Russian Children, Good King Wenceslas, Coventry Carol, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Singing Sergeants : Caroling Caroling is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years as a joyful part of the winter holiday season. Since the Eisenhower administration, the Singing Sergeants have been caroling at the White House each December for guests from around the country and throughout the world. In the spirit of that tradition, this album contains some of the group's favorites, including songs that tell the Christmas story, celebrate the Hannukah tradition, and inspire hope, peace and joy. All of the songs are performed in the a cappella tradition. Caroling, directed by Captain Chad A. Steffey, is dedicated to all of the men and women of the United States Air Force who are away from home during the holiday season. Performances on NBC's Today Show, Jay Leno, Shawn Colvin and Garrison Keillor have propelled album sales to more than 2 million copies (mostly sold from the back of their trailer) and thousands of loyal fans. "Christmas" has 18 tunes, favorites are a rockin', joyful "Joy to the World," the upbeat, surprising originals "Come to Save the World," "Baby King," "On This Christmas Night" and "King of Glory;" raucous live cut "Adeste Fideles," finger-popping salsa-flavored "Ay, Ay, Ay It's Christmas," the live Elvis-like "Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me;" juicy new arrangements of standards "Up on the Housetop," "Silent Night," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Little Drummer Boy;" new holiday lyrics to the rocker "29 Ways to My Baby's Door," the truly silly "Nuttin' for Christmas" and finishing with the lovely, poignant "Grace." Songlist: I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, Last Christmas, Angels We Have Heard on High, Away in a Manger/O Come Emmanuel, North to Alaska, Deck the Halls, O Christmas Tree, Carol of the Bells, All Will be Well, Santa's Serenade, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear Trapp Family Singers : Christmas with the Trapp Family Singers Who doesn't know the dramatic and true story of the Von Trapp Family, who escaped from their Austrian homeland under the Nazi occupation? This singing family relocated to America, where they performed and recorded for many years. No novelty act, the ensemble, under the direction of conductor Dr. F. Wasner, sings first-rate a cappella arrangements (with the exception of "Ihr Kinderlein Kommet") of European carols, such as the Italian "La Canzone Di Natale," the Tyrolean "Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet" and the Polish "Shepherds Come A-Running." Some of these melodies will be familiar to American audiences, but some will not, which is part of their charm. This 1950's era mono recording is clean, present, and immediate; the vocal blend of the group is so natural and perfectly pitched, it requires nothing to complete it. Songlist: Deck the Halls, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Hirten, Wachet Auf!, Zu Bethlehem Geboren, A La Nanita Nana, El Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant, La Canzone Di Natale, Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet, Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head, Shepherds Come A-Running, Lobt Gott Ihr Christen All Gleich, Es Wird Scho Glei Dumpa, Nu Ar Det Jul Igen, Ihr Kinderlein Kommet, Der Scheibendudler, Carol of the Drum, Deine Wangelen, Weihnachtslied (Silent Night) Vienna Boys Choir : Christmas Angels When one of the top Boys Choirs in the world perform Christmas music one expects a world class recording and indeed this release delivers! The variety of tenor and bass/ baritone voices, combined with the boys' voices is outstanding. About half accompanied, the CD begins with a Gene Puerling arrangement of "The Christmas Song" (a second Puerling chart, "Deck The Halls," is a cappella). Michele Weir's version of "A Child Is Born" (certainly one of the loveliest of Christmas carols) includes a vocal trombone solo by Denis Allaire. Phil Mattson's a cappella "Here We Come A Caroling" offsets the first verse with a delightful four-bar countermelody; it's these little touches that elevate a song from the pedestrian to the remarkable. This classic song gets a bit of an island feel with this a cappella setting that will delight your listeners! It has a slight lyric twist in the middle that will add some spice before returning to the familiar traditional verse. Duration: ca. 2:05.
Arranger: Kirby Shaw
Wilberg's arrangement of the Christmas favourite Deck the hall is bright and energetic from beginning to end. After an uplifting introduction going through several keys, the choir sings the three carol verses in up to seven parts.
