Initially written to a tune other than "Londonderry Air", the words to "Danny Boy" were penned by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly in Bath, Somerset in 1910. After his Irish-born sister-in-law Margaret (known as Jess) in the United States sent him a copy of "Londonderry Air" in 1913 (an alternative version of the story has her singing the air to him in 1912 with different lyrics), Weatherly modified the lyrics of "Danny Boy" to fit the rhyme and meter of "Londonderry Air". Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular songs in the new century. In 1915, Ernestine Schumann-Heink produced the first recording of "Danny Boy". Jane Ross of Limavady is credited with collecting the melody of "Londonderry Air" in the mid-19th century from a musician she encountered

Alexander L'Estrange : Danny Boy and Other Classic Irish Melodies The Irish have long been famed for their powerful traditional melodies, and three in this volume are surely amongst the finest. 'Danny Boy' (the melody of which is also known as 'Londonderry Air') was first published, without a title, in 1855. The words most commonly associated with it were written by an Englishman who apparently never set foot in Ireland! 'The lark in the clear air' is an exquisite song celebrating the beauty of nature. The poignant words of 'The last rose of summer' match the song's mournful, drooping melody. Songlist: Danny Boy, The Lark In the Clear Air, The Last Rose of Summer Alexander L'Estrange : Danny Boy and Other Classic Irish Melodies This enchanting collection of traditional Irish melodies showcases three of the finest songs to originate from the 'Emerald Isle' from the classic title song 'Danny Boy' to the poignant 'The Last Rose of Summer' and 'The Lark in Clear Air'. 'Amazing Grace' is a traditional gospel, shuffle arrangement with jazz harmonies is sure to satisfy. The larger the ensemble, the better this one will sound. The 6/8 meter keeps the gospel flow and the harmonic structure will keep the jazz ears awake with its reharmonization. The opening and closing solo melody may be as free as your gospel ear desires. The 'Shenandoa' arrangement is here in a spiced up ballad setting. It begins with a tenor solo with later group entrance featuring diverse, harmonic settings, key changes, soprano solo, short tenor/soprano duet and, at the end of the group harmony, gently fades just like the ol' river. Close harmony chords and arpeggiated textures combine to make for a lush, complex, and moving rendering of, the Irish ballad, Danny Boy. A tenor solo and baritone duet share the melody with the ensemble. The simple folk melody in 'The Water is Wide' is the foundation for this complex choral work. Each verse has its own flavor, ranging from flowing arpeggiated textures to rich close harmonies. Songlist: Aura Lee, Amazing Grace, Shenandoah, Danny Boy, The Water Is Wide Various Arrangers : World Folk Songs for Treble Voices Several variants of the famous English folk ballad "Barb'ry Ellen" are incorporated into this evocative setting for women's voices. First performed by the Varsity Women's Choir of Appleton North High School, James Heiks, conductor. "Ya Faraoule" is a combination of Christian Lebanese songs of romantic longing with Muslim Egyptian songs of romantic joy. There are plenty of sensuous, serpentine Middle Eastern lines for singers. The gentle and expressive arrangement of "Danny Boy" works equally well highlighting a solo or small ensemble. A music that celebrates the Australian continent and its peoples. "Kungala" is a typically energetic and inventive piece, using gesture and stage movement as well as vocalisation to create an atmosphere of energy and joy. "Queen Jane" - A slow melody of breathtaking beauty of an old ballad on Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII. Lots of opportunity for storytelling - the sopranos are Jane, 2nd sopranos the Narrator and the altos are Henry. Moving and sad. Songlist: Queen Jane, Ya Faraoule, Danny Boy, Kungala, Three Chinese Songs Various Arrangers : Celtic Folksongs for Female Voices Beautiful lyric lines and warm harmonies are the centerpiece of Philip Lawson's stunning a cappella setting 'Danny Boy'. This work is sure to leave your listeners spellbound! Each of the four vocal parts has its chance to sing! In 'Celtic Lullaby,' english composer David Fanshawe has crafted a song of delicate beauty and rich nuance based on a traditional Celtic melody. Songlist: Danny Boy, Geordie (How the Lady Saved her Man), An Irish Blessing Voces8 : A Cappella Songbook 2 "The singing of VOCES8 is impeccable in its quality of tone and balance. They bring a new dimension to the word 'ensemble' with meticulous timing and tuning" - Gramophone Magazine Songlist: Danny Boy, Edo Lullaby, Gladiator, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Pie Jesu, Price Tag, Strong, Twist and Shout Yumiko Matsuoka : Collection Volume 2 The Lennon-McCartney classic "Eleanor Rigby" retains some of the flavor of the original Beatles' arrangement intact by giving the background vocals a string-like texture in the opening section. It then goes through a couple of key changes and gives different parts an opportunity to sing the melody, while the background supports with strong harmony and interesting counterlines. Arranged for a cappella quintet Vox One, the classic "Danny Boy" song showcases a soprano solo. In the middle section, the alto and tenor parts weave a line reminiscent of a brook in a green field of Ireland. Lush, complex harmony and a dramatic build-up reward both the singes and the audience. Recorded on Vox One's, Chameleon. The national anthem is treated here with solemn but inspirational sound. The rich harmony, without going too far away from the original, builds to a climax with contrapuntal lines that make it interesting for the singers. Written for the New York-based group the Western Wind, Yumiko's arrangement of 'Where Is Love?' opens with a mezzo/alto feature backed by flowing lines reminiscent of a small string ensemble. After the interlude, the melody is passed onto different parts with a surprise ending that involves a couple of tonality changes. Written for a cappella quintet Vox One's comeback album of the same title, 'Pure Imagination' features a soprano solo with the background vocals that re-creates the dreamy world of Willy Wonk'a Chocolate Factory. Come and explore the harmony and texture that builds up to a fantastic climax. It will make you want to watch and savor the movie once again. Selected for the Bruce Rogers Choral Series, this setting of Danny Boy by Trevor Gomes is uniquely lovely. Following a stark opening the piece grows in richness and vocal parts, with stirring harmonies and a graceful conclusion. Appropriate for fine high school choirs, college and commnity choirs. Medium to difficult.

Arranged for the Harvard Glee Club, the beautiful Danny Boy is harmonized in a highly compelling manner. Several verses include exquisite polyphonic writing for TTBB choir, which suddenly resolve into a floating, almost ethereal unison. The tenor solo is not at all difficult. Danny Boy is probably one of the most famous and well-loved melodies of all time. It is a wonderful concert piece, challenging and most rewarding.

Julie Knowles' SSA setting of this Old Irish air has become a classic. Now you can also perform this expressive arrangement with your mixed and 2-part choirs. Lush, harmonic choral writing--Julie at her very best.

The history of perhaps the most famous Irish folksong Danny Boy (the melody of which is also known as Londonderry Air), is steeped in mystery. It was first published, without a title, in Dublin in 1855 and was apparently collected by a Miss Jane Ross, who claimed to have taken it down from the playing of an itinerant piper. However, although it is often assumed to be an old, traditional tune, its structure and meter do not fit any of the known Irish folksong forms. The words most commonly associated with it for the last hundred years or so, "Danny Boy," were written by an English lawyer who apparently never set foot in Ireland! Faber Choral Singles offer a series of beautifully crafted arrangements in a diversity of musical styles for today's choirs. From Broadway, pop and folk to spirituals, gospel and original works, the Faber Choral Singles series guarantees the perfect repertoire for every occasion.

A veteran arranger like Vijay Singh knows when to let simplicity shine and when to bring in enhancements to a traditional melody like this one. He patiently waits until we are well-invested in the song before introducing us to harmonic variations. And even then they are subtle and artistically placed. Excellent for high school, college and community treble choirs.
