The playground for the talents of the brilliant arranger Gene Puerling, who went on to form the Singers Unlimited, the Hi-Lo's toured with theJudy Garland show and sang with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. These tracks are orchestrated (by Frank Comstock, who backed the group on many early recordings) and include wonderful standards such as "Summertime," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." This is a jubilant recording that is alive with the joy of music. We have it on good authority that "Clap Yo' Hands" includes some of the group's favorite songs. Contains "Operator," the first Transfer song to garner the public's attention. It's an impressive opening gambit, and is still consistent with their style-be it on "Candy," "Tuxedo Junction" or "Java Jive." "You Can Depend On Me" is a fast sprint, "Blue Champagne" an elegant toast to the era of the speakeasy. "Occapella" is a bluesy uptempo tune that sounds a bit like early Bonnie Raitt. Also, an early version of "Heart's Desire," (later re-recorded on "Bop Doo Wopp." ) All songs are accompanied, with particular depth in the horn/reed sections. Songlist: Tuxedo Junction, Sweet Talking Guy, Operator, 'Candy, Gloria, Clap Yo' Hands, That Cat Is High, You Can Depend On Me, Blue Champagne, Java Jive, Occapella, Heart's Desire Merry Macs : Mairzy Doats The Merry Macs first formed as a trio in themid-1920s by the 3 McMichael brothers, baritone Ted and tenors Judd and Joe. 'My World of Fantasy' has a fresh flavor, with Katrina Trowery on lead; it adapts the doo-wop backing arrangement with unexpected chords and an updated vocal style. 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' begins solo, the group joining in to punch up the hook; it's a simple but distinctive approach. In general, the group's modus operandi is to overlap within both styles, henceforth, 'A Perfect Blend.' Songlist: Clap Yo' Hands, World of Fantasy, I Want a Girl, This Is My Prayer, Natural High, Love Won't Let Me Wait, Sitting In the Park, You Can Depend On Me, Life Is But a Dream, Spinning Around, Let It Please Be You, I Could Never Love Another, Two People In the World, Who's Lovin You, Ooh Baby Baby, So Much, It's So Hard to Say Goodbye To Yesterday Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir : Songs From The Heart Another wonderful collection from 200-strong, 3-choir SVCC, pride of Harrisonburg, PA, directed by founder Julia J. The 56-strong mixed choir bring us 26 joyous songs, beginning with their own song, "Voena Story," the marvelous "Prayer of the Children," an original with lively percussion by the Director, "Holy Spirit, Come" (she also wrote the excellent "Scat Play," "Clap Your Hands," and "One Light, One Voice," as well as arranging and writing lyrics for other tunes) and continuing with folk songs and spirituals from the Bantu African, Gaelic, Russian, Filipino, Korean, Ladino, 16th century Spanish, Eastern European Jewish, South African, African American, Hebrew, Japanese, 17th Century German, Guam and Old English traditions.
