Members take turns soloing over chord voicings that lend themselves to comparison with the Singers Unlimited; the arrangements, (many written by Michele Weir, of Phil Mattson's P.M. Singers), can be tricky! "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," featuring the pitter-patter of reindeer feet and a presto descending motive, varies its rhythmic accents and tempo throughout. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" has a signature walking bass, setting a relaxed four in conjunction with the lyric. In short, Santa, prepare to swing with style! Songlist: The Christmas Song"/"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Christmas Time is Here, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, O Come All Ye Faithful, Sleigh Ride, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Here Comes Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen, Away in a Manger, Silent Night, Wonderful Peace Big Chicken Chorus : We Need A Little Christmas Formed in 1986 by a group of guys who got together to sing barbershop in somebody's basement, the BCC has now grown to over 100 members, the largest barbershop chorus in the Southeast. The group has medaled in SPEBSQSA'S International Chorus Competition, placing as high as 3rd in 1999. They are joined by barbershop stars Fred, Riptide, Atlanta Power Company, Scruffy Murphy's and Mary Selano. 11 songs, from the title tune, "Silent Night" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town;" to "Beautiful Savior," "Sleigh Ride," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear/First Noel/Joy To The World Medley" and "May The Good Lord Bless You and Keep You." The addition of the guest artists allows many solos and delightful variations in the sound of these classic Christmas tunes. We also liked the cover art of Santa's sleigh being pulled by eight extra-large chickens-"We Need" is one of the best barbershop Christmas CDs we've heard! Songlist: We Need A Little Christmas, Silent Night, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Happy Holidays / The Holiday Season Medley, Christmas Time Is Here, Beautiful Savior, Sleigh Ride, Gesu Bambino, The Christmas Song, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear / The First Noel / Joy to the World, May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You The Blenders : Nog Hurry, quick! Look at what the Santa's little helpers have been up to this year! It's hard to believe that these four young men from Minnesota have transfused these familiar holiday chestnuts with such inspiration and wonder, but indeed they have. "Let It Snow" takes as it's initial premise a Polynesian tiki lounge rhythm - already different - and then takes the cheery melody headlong into a ninth chord resolution! This CD is trimmed with so many gorgeous decorations that it improves the more one hears it, revealing subtleties that delight upon discovery. The creativity just saturates every song, whether as a distinctive rhythmic variation or unexpected countermelody, but always integrated into the whole (by the way, the group produced and arranged "Nog" themselves). In terms of intonation and blend, the Blenders (coinciding with their choice of name), are the best in the business: listen to "Do You Hear What I Hear" as just one excellent example. It's perfectly calibrated, the senses reveling in the purity of sound. Contemporary a cappella at its best. Songlist: The Christmas Song, Do You Hear What I Hear, Let It Snow, The First Noel, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The Little Drummer Boy, Angels We Have Heard On High, Christmas Time Is Here, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Silent Night Chanticleer : Portrait In celebration of its 25th anniversary as "an orchestra of voices," the 12 talented men who are San Francisco-based Chanticleer bring us this marvelous retrospective sampling from its rich discography of recordings. In 1978, Louis Botto, a graduate student in medieval and Renaissance music, wanted to hear the music he was studying performed live (a rarity at the time), and gathered a group of singers from the SF Symphony Chorus and Grace Cathedral Choir. They chose the name "Chanticleer" from the clear-singing rooster from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." The early years were difficult, but the group's reputation grew enough by 1991 to make all 12 members full-time employees. There are 19 gems from some of the many Chanticleer CDs that grace our catalog, and it's hard to pick favorites. Those who favor their flawless singing accompanied, we would recommend Ignacio de Jerusalem's "Hymn: Quem Terra Pontus Sidera," "Recessional: Angelicas Milicias" by Manuel de Sumaya, and Mercer & Arlen's "Blues in the Night." For a cappella, we like the Gregorian chant "Ave Maria," Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Alma Redemptoris Mater," Bernard Rands' "This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart," Chen Yi's "Wild Grass," Stephen Foster's "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" (arr. by Gene Puerling), Michael McGlynn's "Dulaman," "Spanish Carol," "Wade in the Water"--frankly, we could list them all! A well-chosen "best of" of one of our favorite choral groups. Highly recommended! Songlist: Hymn: Quem Tera Pontus Sidera, Ave Maria, Alma Redemptoris Mater, The Angel Cried Out, Recessional: Angelicas Milicias, Wherewithal Shall A Young Man, Love Is A Beautiful Dream, This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart, Wild Grass, Labbra Vermiglie E Belle, Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair, Dulaman, Shenandoah, Spanish Carol, Love Is Letting Go, Blues In the Night, Wade in the Water, We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace, Christmas Time Is Here Chapter 6 : Christmastime Chicago's excellent Contemporary Christian sextet Chapter 6, who we have enjoyed on the stage at the Harmony Sweeps Finals, have a poised, strong, jazz-flavored CD in "Christmas time." 12 songs, notably the light, scatty "Sleigh Ride," a Chanticleer-like arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," a surprising scatty Manhattan Transferish arrangement of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," a rap-flavored "This Christmas," a blue-note "Away in a Manger," a jazzy, driving "Carol of the Bells," surprising, hip vocal percussion arrangements of "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow," a moody "Gabriel's Message," a blue-note "The First Noel" and a stunningly jazzy "White Christmas." An unexpected, but impressive Christmas album for very talented Chapter 6. Songlist: Sleigh Ride, Christmas Time is Here, O Come O Come Emmanuel, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, This Christmas, Away in a Manger, Carol of the Bells, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Rise Up Shepherd and Follow, Gabriel's Message, The First Noel, White Christmas, Under the Boardwalk, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Jingle-Bell Rock, I Believe, Star-Spangled Banner, O Canada! Chor Leoni : Yuletide Fires 2 With our world changing so rapidly, with our means of communication accelerating at dizzying speeds, with our cultures and beliefs intermingling and becoming less well-defined, what does Christmastime mean to people in our world and how do we choose the music for a CD that will be appealing to listeners? In many ways the music on this CD, Yuletide Fires II, is a reflection of that current world. You'll find ancient Latin chant expressing the wonder of the virgin and child; familiar words and carols that connect us to a Christmas of our childhood; songs written in the 21st century that explore new ways to celebrate the joys of Christmas and hopes and possibilities of a new year. There are also tunes and tales that tell of traditions and transport us back in memory to that time of heightened anticipation. We are thrilled to have renowned mezzo-soprano Judith Forst join us on this CD - what a wonderful Christmas present! Songlist: What Child Is This?, Alma Redemptoris Mater, A La Nanita Nana, Ubi Caritas, Ave Regina Caelorum, The Gate of the Year, Ave Maria, The Three Kings, Sweet Was the Song, In the Bleak Midwinter, Peace I Leave with You, Salve Regina, Koppangen, Cantique de Noel, Regina Caeli, A New Year Carol, O Tannenbaum, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, To Drive the Cold Winter Away, The Mummer Song, Christmas Time Is Here Groove For Thought : Songs of Good Cheer Wow no wonder this fabulous vocal jazz group were National Champions of the Harmony Sweepstakes and finalists on the Sing-Off TV show! It is so refreshing to hear fresh interpretations of these Christmas songs and there is never a dull moment. Mostly a cappella with occasional light accompaniment this is a recording that vocal jazz fans will play season after season. Songlist: Carol of the Bells, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Holy Night, Christmas Time Is Here, We Three Kings / O Come, O Come Emmanuel, My Favorite Things, Breath of Heaven, O Come All Ye Faithful, Silent Night, The First Noel, Angels We Have Heard on High Inner Voices : Greetings Of The Season Los Angeles-based four-woman, one man vocal jazz quintet brings us their long-awaited second Christmas album after their critically-acclaimed "Christmas In My Dreams" and "Prairie Jazz." The one man would be Morgan Ames, the group's producer, arranger and alto, and he is masterful at what he does, as are sopranos Shelby and Julie, tenor Sheri and baritone Michael. "Greetings" is a delicious, refreshing collection of 15 tunes, and some of our favorites include originals written by group members, such as Shelby Flint's lovely "State of Grace" and "Greetings Of The Season" and Morgan's romantic "Merry Christmas, Sweetheart." Also very fine are the bluesy "Silent Night," the slightly scary "Zat You, Santa Claus?," Sammy Cahn's "Christmas Waltz," Chas. Brown & Gene Redd's plaintive "Please Come Home for Christmas," John Wallowitch & G. Shocker's lyrical, nostalgic "A Christmas Journey," a jazzy, salsa-flavored "Jingle Bell Rock," Joe Van Winkle & R. Sherman's joyous "Christmas Time In New Orleans" and the moody "Carol Of The Wildwood," with additional lyrics by Morgan. Every Christmas season Inner Voices holds their sold-out, acclaimed Christmas show in LA, and given the great material we've heard on "Greetings of the Season," this year's will be particularly wonderful. There is some light accompaniment here, but we loved every cut on the album, so don't miss this one! Songlist: Silent Night, State of Grace, We Need A Little Christmas, Zat You, Santa Claus, Carol of the Bells, Merry Christmas Sweetheart, Greetings of the Season, Christmas Waltz, Please Come Home For Christmas, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, A Christmas Journey, Christmas Time In New Orleans, Christmas Time Is Here, Carol of the Wildwood m-pact : Carol Commission The Seattle quintet m-pact is just one of the best - and hippest - contemporary groups on the scene today. With unerring musical discernment, they drafted some of the most savvy arrangers to collaborate with them on "A Carol Commission": Randy Crenshaw, Michelle Weir, Yumiko Matsuoka-Young, Morgan Ames, Cedric Dent (of Take 6) et cetera. This marriage of technique and talent has propagated a fusion sound: the harmonic nucleus of jazz, but with so much more. Of the six tracks available for preview at presstime, the standouts are the "Little Drummer Boy," arranged by m-pact's own Matthew Selby; marked with vocal percussion, it has a retro seventies funk feel, a feel associated with the seventh and major/minor third of the blues pentatonic scale, which can be readily heard in the Motown-influenced bass line. "Caroling, Caroling," arranged by Randy Crenshaw, toys with meter amongst the parts, moving in and out of straight time and varying the rhythmic accents in unexpected places, like the handclap on the four, not the one of the beat. "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" is incredible: a hip-hop jazz interpretation of this classical standard. "A Carol Commission" is an audacious project of most challenging musical caliber! Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Christmas Time Is Here, Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, Snowfall, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Do You Hear What I Hear?, De King Is Born Today, As December Fades Away, Away In A Manger Marcoux Corner : Tinsel Minneapolis, MN-based all-male Contemporary quartet Marcoux Corner brings us a beautifully-crafted Christmas album of 10 tunes, all with cutting-edge arrangements by members of the group. Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song," "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells," the two traditional carols "Oh, Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," the pop favorites "Frosty the Snowman," "Christmas Time is Here," "Baby It's Cold Outside" (featuring Nancy Harms) and "What are You Doing New Year's Eve," both by Frank Loesser. Our final favorite is the very funny "Huge on the Luge," written by the possibly fictional Moxy Fruvous. "Tinsel" is a sweet-harmonied, big fun Christmas collection from Josh, David, Kevin and Brent, our friends at Marcoux Corner! Songlist: The Christmas Song, Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Christmas Time is Here, O Come, O Come. Emmanuel, Baby, It's Cold Outside, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Huge on the Luge, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Minnesota Boychoir : Winter Wonderland Building their excellent reputation since 1962, the Minnesota Boychoir applies their rich, youthful sound to 11 piano-accompanied Christmas standards. Favorites such as "Winter Wonderland," "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a rich a cappella arrangement of "I Saw Three Ships," "Riu, Riu, Chiu" and "Once in Royal David's City" are here, as well as more unexpected gifts: Keith Hampton's spiritual medley "True Light," Bob Chilcott's lovely "Mid-winter," John Rutter's "Candlelight Carol," Carolyn Jennings' "Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain" and the rhythmic gem, "African Carol." "Wonderland" is exactly that, a sweet gift to all from Minnesota's talented Boychoir. Songlist: Winter Wonderland, It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, I Saw Three Ships, True Light, Mid-Winter, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Candlelight Carol, African Noel, Climb To The Top Of The Highest Mountain, Once In A Royal David's City, Christmas Time is Here Northwest Boychoir : 'Tis the Season Released in November 1999, Northwest Boychoir and Vocalpoint! Seattle's fourth Christmas album: 'Tis the Season! The repertoire for this album includes a mix of traditional sacred music and favorite popular tunes. The traditional, sacred pieces were recorded at Bastyr University's chapel (formerly St. Thomas Center) with musicians from Seattle's professional orchestra and chamber groups. The popular pieces were recorded at Triad Studios in Redmond. Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Come Leave Your Sheep, Tomorrow Shall Be Your Dancing Day, Deck The Halls, Personent Hodie, How Far Is It To Bethlehem, When Christ Was Born, Jingle Bell Rock, Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, Sleigh Ride, Christmas Time Is Here, Let It Snow, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Jingle Bells Pacific Chorale : Christmas Time Is Here Pacific Chorale is one of America's great choirs. This is a treasured collection of some of Pacific Chorale's most requested Christmas gems. Classic seasonal pieces are heard alongside all-time favorite carols. Under the inspired guidance of Artistic Director John Alexander, Pacific Chorale has infused an Old World art form with California's hallmark innovation and cultural independence. Songlist: A Carol Fantasy, Angels We Have Heard On High, The First Noel, Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming, Once In Royal David's City, Jesus Christ The Apple Tree, Ave Maria, The Lamb, I Wonder As I Wander, Sing We Now Of Christmas, Carol Of The Drum, Three Little Carols, Carol Of The Bells, Here We Come A-Caroling, Jingle Bells, HAve Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Silent Night, A New Year Carol, Christmas Time Is Here Seattle Children's Chorus : Voices Of Christmas Past 200 young voices raised in harmony, committed to musical excellence in rehearsals, performances, at festivals and on tour all over the globe-this is what the SCC is all about. "Voices" is a best-of Christmas collection of 20 songs, recorded from 2001 to 2004, by the elite smaller groups within the Chorus, Arioso, Intermezza, Camerata, and the combined Choruses. Favorites, hard to pick, are the sweet "Petit Enfant" and the lilting "Noel Nouvelet" by Arioso, "Ho Ro Ho Ro," "Arise Now, You Shepherds" and "Christmas Time is Here" by Intermezzo, Camerata's "O Magnum Mysterium," "Betelehemu" and the nice medley "Christmas Pudding," and "The Lamb" and "Hodie Christus Natus Est" by the combined Choirs. There is something wonderfully right and appropriate about a talented children's choir singing classic Christmas music! All tracks are lightly accompanied. Songlist: Arioso:, Magnificat, Petit Enfant, Noel Nouvelet, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Intermezzo:, He Shall Feed His Flock, How Far is it to Bethelem?, Ho Ro Ho Ro, Arise Now, You Shepherds, Christmas Time is Here, Combined Choruses:, The Lamb, Arioso:, Come, Dear Children, Ziemas svetki sabraukusi, Gloria from Mass No. 6, Camerata:, Gloria, O Magnum Mysterium, Betelehemu, Christmas Pudding, Gloria, Combined Choruses, Hodie Christus Natus Est, The Lord Bless You and Keep You Solstice : Winter Solstice Veteran all-women septet, and one of our favorite World/Folk groups, we watched Solstice do the Bay Area proud by winning the Regional and placing 3rd in the 2007 National Finals. Urged by their friends and families to release a Holiday CD, the group finally and happily fulfilled this longtime dream, and Becca, Emily, Kim, Krista, Lark, Mari & Sara did it wonderfully! Choosing little-known, difficult classical tunes like Cortland Bender's lovely "Rosa Mystica," Francisco Guerrero's "A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo" and Thomas Weelkes' "To Shorten Winter's Sadness," from the 15th and 16th centuries; beautifully arranged traditional carols like Bernard de la Monnoye's "Patapan," "Deck the Hall," and Franz Gruber's "Silent Night;" and popular Christmas songs like Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here," Tommie Connor's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling;" along with the rich traditional Hebrew song "S'Vivon" and other favorites, make "Winter Solstice" a very special 15-cut collection that is sure to brighten your holiday for years to come! Songlist: Nowell, Nowell, Out of Your Sleep, Deck the Hall, S'Vivon, Rosa Mystica, Corpus Christi Carol, Patapan, Nova, Nova, Ave Fit Ex Eva, Christmas Time is Here, Tyrley, Tyrlow!, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo, Caroling, Caroling, Jul, Jul, To Shorten Winter's Sadness, Silent Night Take 6 : The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Legendary, pioneering Contemporary Christian A Cappella group Take 6 has been mixing elements of Jazz, Gospel, R&B and Doo-Wop for nearly 25 years, winning 10 Grammys, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award, and two NAACP Image Awards in the process. Claude, Mark, Joel, David, Dr. Cedric and Alvin bring us a cool 10-song collection of Christmas tunes from their childhoods: a finger-popping title tune, smooth and jazzy "The Sugar Plum Dance" (based on "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"), a wonderfully greasy "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," a breezy, jazzy "Sleigh Ride," a surprising, salsa-flavored "White Christmas," eggnog-smooth bluenote Jazz arrangements of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear;" a rewritten, strikingly-arranged take on "I Saw Three Ships," and a piano-accompanied "Christmas Time is Here," featuring a sweet lead by a marvelous female guest vocalist. Take 6 has delighted and amazed us through the years of their groundbreaking career, and we were very happy to receive "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and feel that way again, listening to this finely-crafted album. It's been a long wait for a new T6 release, but this makes it all worth it! Songlist: It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, White Christmas, Grinch Introduction/ The Grinch/ "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch", Sleigh Ride, I'll Be Home for Christmas, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, The Sugarplum Dance (Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy), I Saw Three Ships, Jingle Bells, Christmas Time Is Here Various Artists : Sing-Off: Songs of the Season Now in its third year, The Sing-Off, NBC's smash series based on our own annual Harmony Sweepstakes, just keeps getting better and better. The show went weekly on primetime in 2011, and set out to find the country's best a cappella groups by holding auditions in four major cities, and this shows in both the quantity and quality of this year's contestants. "Songs of the Season is a very Contemporary Christmas album of 13 cuts, some of our favorites are old favorites that sound completely new, such as Dartmouth Aires' big fun take on Doo-Wop take on "Up on the Housetop," Pentatonix' "We Three Kings," and U of Rochester Yellowjackets' "Carol of the Bells." Sonos' "Coventry Carol" has a wonderful harmonic blend that sounds accompanied, giving it an urban sound while respecting its original haunting lyrics; Vocal Point's "Infant Lowly, Infant Holy" is stunningly pure and lovely; "Winter Wonderland" is another chestnut taken in a bright, new Doo-Wop direction by North Shore. "In the Bleak Midwinter," is given a beautiful, subtle arrangement by Kinfolk, building to a powerful, complex harmonic blend; and we would have to give Urban Method the award for "most innovative" with their Hip-Hop take on "I Saw Three Ships." "Jingle Bells," the bonus track by last year's winners Committed, is given a sweet, urban edge, and serves as icing on the cake to this delightful, envelope-pushing collection! The quest, if you will, of the Harmony Sweepstakes since its founding 27 years ago has been to showcase the ultimate instrument, the human voice, and the Sing-Off has carried on this quest to a huge, admiring audience, which can only grow with great CDs like "Songs of the Season." And what can we say, but "Bravo!" Songlist: All I Want For Christmas is You, Santa Baby, We Three Kings, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Christmas Time is Here, Coventry Carol, Carol of the Bells, Up On The Housetop, Winter Wonderland, It Came Across the Midnight Clear, In The Bleak Midwinter, I Saw Three Ships, Jingle Bells Vocal Majority : Believe It's not very often that one can say with certainty in the music business that any particular group is the very best of its type in the world. Yet we can say as much with this barbershop chorus as they have 11 gold medals to prove it - more than any other chorus in history. We therefore always have high hopes of their new recordings and expect something close to perfection. Well once again they surpass themselves on this holiday gem. One of the things that always impress is how such a sweet, sometimes so gentle; sound can come from such a large chorus of male only voices. Director (and arranger of many of the songs) Jim Clancy truly has a talent for coaxing the very purest of sound from a chorus. There is the occasional accompanied Christmas ornamentation and some very strong solosby Jay Dennis, Steve DeCrow and Jeff Oxley but it's the harmony that counts, and this recording has some of the best! Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Believe, Mary's Boy Child, What Child is This?, My Grown-Up Christmas List, Christmas Time Is Here, Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells, That's What I Want for Christmas, Christmas Lullaby, Betelehemu, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, Birthday of a King Vocal Spectrum : Vocal Spectrum IV We love Christmas, harmony and barbershop so we are in heaven here! One would expect nothing short of excellence from this International Champion quartet and Vocal Spectrum delivers in spades. Holiday harmony has never sounded so good and Tim, Eric, Jonny and Chris display a unique blend that clearly makes them one of barbershop's best. Songlist: Welcome Christmas, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Cool Yule, In The Bleak Midwinter, What Child Is This?, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Joseph's Lullaby, Believe, What's This?, Christmas Time Is Here, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Away In A Manger, O Holy Night Voices Of Lee : A Cappella Christmas Their first Christmas CD was a best seller and this new release is all a cappella and absolutely stunning.
