The Mamas & The Papas' hymn to the West Coast state California Dreamin' was actually written in chilly New York City by John and Michelle Phillips before they even formed the band that made them famous. Simon & Garfunkel were New York through and through and Simon's jaunty song about the Queensboro Bridge - aka Feelin' Groovy - uses its local colloquial name. Skeeter Davis, born Mary Frances Penick, was the survivor of a car crash that killed her singing partner Betty Jack Davis. They had enjoyed some success as The Davis Sisters but The End Of The World was the biggest hit of Skeeter's subsequent solo career. In My Room saw The Beach Boys moving indoors from all that sun and sand and recording one of their most reflective and lovely songs. Meanwhile the British invasion was threatening the pop status quo in America and Can't Buy Me Love, from the film Hard Day's Night, gave The Beatles yet another number one in the US charts.

International Barbershop Harmony Society Quartet Champions Crossroads brings us their second album. The quartet won Gold at the BHS's 2009 international convention in Anaheim, CA, where Bass singer Jim Henry also directed the Ambassadors of Harmony chorus to their own international championship with the highest score ever obtained. All four members had previously won Gold in other quartets; Henry with 1993 champs Gas House Gang, baritone Brandon Guyton with 2002 champs Four Voices, lead Mike Slamka with 2003 champs Power Play, and tenor Fred Farrell with 1989 champs Second Edition. There are 13 songs here, favorites are Barbershop chestnuts such as "Sweet Adeline," "Hey There," the title tune and "Bread and Gravy;" Gospel tunes like "Your First Day in Heaven," "All People That On Earth Do Dwell," "Via Dolorosa" and "Guard Me, Oh Lord;" a very funny short parody of a missing hairpiece that "Blew By You," Swing-era hits like Cab Calloway's "The Jumpin' Jive," Irving Berlin's "Let Yourself Go" and Sammy Davis Jr.'s "Too Close for Comfort;" and a sweetly harmonic take on Lennon and McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love." FWI describes itself as "a refreshingly quirky yet musically substantive eight-person San Francisco-based a cappella ensemble known for its versatility and unpredictability." Founded in 1996, this 4-man, 4-woman ensemble gave a very impressive performance at the 2005 Bay Area Regional, and prides itself in singing something for everyone. These 17 cuts are clear evidence of this: a wonderfully harmonic cover of CSN&Y's "CarryOn/Questions" medley, Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever," Lennon/McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love" performed as a Renaissance madrigal, and the heart-tugging WWII anthem " I'll Be Seeing You" are part of a musical Whitman's Sampler that continually delights and surprises. k.d. lang's hit "Constant Cravings," Z. Randall Stroope's lovely "Amor de mi Alma," J.S. Bach's hilarious "Traffic Fugue" (with lyrics added, with no disrespect, by C. Seagrave); Randy Weeks' country tune "Can't Let Go," and the silly "Plastic Jesus," Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," and The Arachnid Suite: "The Spider" and " The Spider in the Bath" are favorites. Leading off with the title track, which is been heard recently all over public television, the King's Singers demonstrate their usual facility with any sort of arrangement or style. "New Day" is a simple tune, essentially contemporary folk in style, with an uncomplicated arrangement that gives the blend of the voices preeminence. "Noveau Poor" is tongue-in-cheek wit at its most profligate ("we're in Burke's Peerage, we're in "Who's Who," we're in the red, and in penury too." ). "What's In A Tune" tosses a salad comprised of various classical melodies, sung a cappella and fully orchestrated-all vocally, of course. "Can't Buy Me Love" is arranged as a sixteenth century madrigal.

Richter Scales : We Hate A Cappella   

The Scales are an all male, 18-strong Bay Area ensemble which first started singing a cappella together in 2000, and, according to their website, "We Hate A Cappella" is their debut CD. 12 manic, high-energy cuts, some favorites are Lennon/McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love," "I Got Mail," the very funny original by group member Brian Rosen, (who also sings lead), "High Notes." "Stockholm Syndrome" (which focuses on love as a hostage situation), and "Pencil Boy" (where our hero and Crayon Girl are "drawn together") also Rosen originals, strong covers of Steely Dan's "Reelin' In The Years," the Doo-Wop standard "I Only Have Eyes For You" and the Disco hit "Love Machine;" and finally the oddly compelling, fairly silly title tune, also a Rosen original. "We Hate" is a strong, funny debut recording with an attitude by 18 very creative, talented guys - give it a listen!

Ringmasters : Live   

The Swedish Barbershop quartet Ringmasters was founded in the fall of 2006, and they immediately were named "the young talents" in Barbershop circles. In the summer of 2008 they won their first International Gold in the Bank of America Collegiate Quartet Contest. And in 2009 they surprised the world at the Anaheim BHS Internationals, tying State Line Grocery for 4th Place. That marked the first time that a non-US group had placed in the top 10! "Live" is a limited edition, live recording of 8 songs at the Swedish venue Nybrokajen 11. Don't be too surprised to hear beautiful women's voices join Ringmasters (what a great Barbershop name!) on "Live," they are joined by Swedish Folk a cappella quartet Kraja on two cuts, "Come In and Stay Awhile" and "Limu, Limu, Lima." The other six tunes are Simon & Garfunkel's "Baby Driver," "Lazybones," Lennon/McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Blackbird," "Blue Skies" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby." Ringmasters have a fresh, powerful sound that obviously delights their live audience in addition to us. The Swedes are coming, and you really should hear them!
