The Accidentals won the Harmony Sweepstakes in 1995 with their signature tune, "You Win." The eight piece group is known for their exemplary musicianship and unexpected arrangements. Though the advance copy we received for review did not include all of the songs on the CD-there will be twenty in all-what we heard lived up to our high expectations, including the hearty "Wassail Song," a pristine "I Wander As I Wander" and the CARA award-winning "Rudiana," a hilarious tour-de-force that sends up a variety of musical genres from classical to tango!

The Cathedral Singers, an independent ensemble of professional Chicago-area singers, who participate in a wide range of musical activity, from early music performance to jazz and musical theater. They bring this collective experience and superb musicianship to enrich the sound of the Singers. Beautifully-sung familiar carols like "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Away in a Manger," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "O Holy Night," "Fum, Fum, Fum," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "What Child is This" and "The First Nowell" segue into the lesser-known German carol "O Dear Little Children," "Puer natus in Bethlehem," Lorelei McDermott's "Resonet in laudibus and The Virgin's Slumber Song," and Handel's "For Unto Us a Child is Born," from the Messiah. All accompanied, all wonderfully and joyously performed! Many treasures of church music celebrating the birth of Christ are sung with great beauty and eloquence. The latest release from this wonderful children's choir includes the highlights from their 2005-05 season, their most successful season to date. "Shout the Glad Tidings" is a beautiful, sumptuous Christmas album by Minnesota-based "The Singers," led by founding Artistic Director and Conductor Matthew Culloton. The 25 songs include traditional carols like "Once in Royal David's City," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," "Go Tell it on the Mountain" and "Angels We Have Heard on High;" and lesser known but equally lovely works like "Of the Father's Love Begotten," Morten Lauridsen's "O Nat Lux," William Walker's "The Babe of Bethlehem," "El Rorro" (The Babe), Ned Rorem's title tune, Arvo Part's "Bogoroditse Dyevo," Jack M. Jarrett's "Go, Pretty Child," and Culloton's nice piece, "God's Mother Be." The 40-strong, mixed-voice Singers are drawn from all around the state of Minnesota, and some songs have light accompaniment. We loved this varied, finely-crafted collection and bet that you will too!

Founded in 1989 by artistic director Kris Mason, the Seattle Children's Chorus brings us the choral sounds of 200 boys and girls, in four levels of choirs, raised in song. "Seasons of Song" is a wonderful holiday collection of 22 songs from the SCC's most beautiful live performances, many of them lightly piano and flute accompanied. The voices of the beginning younger children (Brio) shine on tunes such as "All That Is Good," "Une Poule Blanche" and Colligan's "Now I Walk In Beauty." The intermediate chorus, Intermezzo, shows their stuff on Nalan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Chilcott's "Sing You Now" and "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella;" and the advanced groups, Arioso and Camerata, easily handle more difficult, eclectic pieces like Pfautsch's "Consecrate the Place and Day," "Kyrie-Sanctus Benedictus from Mass No. 6" by Orban, the joyous a cappella "Sithi Jabula" by Nyberg, Nordqvist's "Wonderful Peace," Fissinger's "Make We Joy," Whitacre's "Lux Arumque" and Bach's "Prepare to Receive Him." These pieces are intermixed with more standard carols like "Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "Deck The Halls" and "The Little Drummer Boy" like treats in a holiday basket. "Seasons of Song" is a beautiful gift of sweet voices!

The 45-voice ensemble Choral Project under the direction of David Hughes is rapidly developing a solid reputation for choral excellence and this release of Christmas music and songs inspired by the season is a delight. The recording includes the first commercial release of Eric Whitacre's composition "Winter" which makes for fascinating listen along with works by Avro Part, Jester Hairston and David Maddux. A particular favorite is the Greg Smith arrangement of "The 12 Days of Christmas" which is sung with great panache by this top-notch choir.

Annabelle Cruz, founder and Director, brings us a sweet Christmas CD by her very special international choir of boys and girls, ages 7 to 15. Annabelle encouraged them to celebrate their unique sound, and they took off from there, expanding into singing 2 to 4-part harmonies, song arranging and even composing. There are 18 songs, recorded before a live audience at St. Dominic's Church in Benicia, CA. Some are familiar, such as "Carol of the Bells," "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella," "Gloria/Silent Night," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel, "Alleluia/Amazing Grace," "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "Ave Maria/Holy Child of God." Less familiar but equally wonderful are "Alabanza," the South African carols "Siyahamba," Tchotcholosa" and "Gabbi Gabbi," the Ladino song "Cuando El Rey Nimrod," and the traditional Appalachian and German carols "The Cherry Tree Carol" and "O Come Little Children." Some light percussion and xylophone on some songs. The collection finishes with Praetorius' "Jubilate Deo" and "In My Eyes" by 13-year-old choir member Madeleine Quandt.
