The song was composed in 1926 as a last-minute addition to the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. Although the show ran for 39 performances only, "Blue Skies" was an instant success, with audiences on opening night demanding 24 encores of the piece from star Belle Baker. During the final repetition, Ms. Baker forgot her lyrics, prompting Berlin to sing them from his seat in the front row.
In 1927, the music was published and Ben Selvin's recorded version was a #1 hit. That same year, it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in The Jazz Singer. The song was recorded in all of the major and dime store labels of the time. Another version of the song was recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra in 1935. 1946 was also a notable year for the song, with a Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film taking its title along with two recorded versions by Count Basie and Benny Goodman reaching #8 and #9 on the pop charts, respectively. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye performed the song in 1954's White Christmas. Crossing genres, Willie Nelson's recording of "Blue Skies" was a #1 country music hit in 1978. It was a major western swing and country standard already in 1939, by Moon Mullican, and in 1962 by Jim Reeves.

"O Clap Your Hands" employs eight parts in a broad polyphonic convergence. Gabrieli's "Magnificat," from the sixteenth century, divides twelve voices into three four-part choirs. "Charm Me Asleep" is a recent work, written for the group; despite it's title, it is as disquieting as soothing. Three "tone poems" (an example of program music, where the music seeks to represent a specific text) by Richard Strauss follow, then Berlin's "Blue Skies"; the latter a swinging version adapted from the Dorsey arrangement that demands attention with dramatic fortissimo ending, and a middle break that detours into a brief classical medley, very reminiscent of the Swingle Singers! Chanticleer also gets down on "Straight Street" with an authentic gospel testimonial. Songlist: I Have Had Singing, O Clap Your Hands, If Ye Love Me, Magnificat a 12, Charm Me Asleep, Vor den Turen, Traumlicht, Frolich in Maien, Nude Descending a Staircase, Blue Skies, Shenandoah, Straight Street, Out of This World, O Waly, Waly, Journey to Recife, Jesus Met the Woman at the Well Chord Company : Keepin' You Company These four talented women began their musical journey in September of 1994. The "Boys," in these all-accompanied, upbeat collection of 13 cuts, bring us a tasty mix of jazz/swing covers (the Gershwins' "'S Wonderful" and "It Ain't Necessarily So," Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," Rogers and Hart's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me." With wonderful humor and poise, the guys will begin a standard, then feel free to riff it into a joyous, upbeat, funny romp. "Poor Boy" and "Saturday Night Fish Fry" follow the basic rockabilly theme of "How'd I Get Into this Ridiculous Mess?" "There'll Be Some Changes Made," "The Riddle Song" and "Side By Side" are bright, upbeat foot-tappers, while "Young Man with a Horn" and "Something I Dreamed Last Night" are creamy-smooth slow-dance tunes. A varied repertoire with one thing in common-it's all wonderful stuff from the legendary, pioneering DRB. Songlist: 'S Wonderful, Poor Boy, Saturday Night Fish Fry, The Riddle Song, There'll Be Some Changes Made, Young Man With A Horn, Side By Side, It Ain't Necessarily So, Blue Skies, Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered, Cha Cha Joe, Something I Dreamed Last Night, It's All Right With Me Fred : Simply Fred Just how good do you have to be before you can be a barbershop comedy group? Really, really, good! Winning medalists at the International Finals in 1996 (fourth place), 1997 (second place) and 1998 (fourth place again) are some of their triumphs but their greatest triumph will be the pure enjoyment you will have each time you hear this cross between wonderful singers and class clowns! For pure goofiness try "Herman and Sally," Harmony Lanes/Bowling Shoes," "Big Time Gutter Ball" or the atrocious "Hindustan," a live recording. Then there is "This Little Light of Mine" with its ballistic ending or the beautiful "Someone's Rockin' My Dreamboat." Where does it all end? ...at the last song, of course! Songlist: Hello, Hello, Hello, Church Bells, Fit As A Fiddle, When I Fall In Love, Let's Get Away From It All, Herman And Sally, This Little Light Of Mine, The Song Has Ended, Blue Skies, Write Myself A Letter, Ballin' The Jack, Harmony Lanes/ Bowling Shoes, Big Time Gutter Ball, Hindustan, Someone's Rockin' My Dreamboat, Tiger Rag Jackpot! : Can You Hear Me Now? Kay, Gina, Joanie and Jan-Winter Park, Florida's Jackpot! Quartet, has been together for over 6 years now and are the 2009 Sweet Adelines International 2nd place finalists. These 12 rock-solid Sweet Adelines standards show us what was clear to the judges - this quartet has big voices, big harmonies and the kind of wonderful, ringing chords rarely heard in a Sweet Adelines group. Favorites are "Taking a Chance on Love," "Unforgettable," "For Once in My Life," "Almost Like Being in Love," "Easy Street," "Money Medley," "I'll Take Romance" and "How Deep is the Ocean." The debut CD "Can You Hear Me Now" has the good stuff, certainly one of the best Sweet Adelines recordings we've heard in a long time, by one of Sweet Adelines' top quartets! Songlist: Blue Skies, I've Got The World On A String, Taking A Chance On Love, That's Life!, Unforgettable, For Once in My Life, Almost Like Being In Love, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Easy Street, Money Medley, I'll Take Romance, How Deep Is The Ocean? Keepsake : Without A Song Florida's mighty Keepsake have received the musical baton from their progenitors the "Suntones" and the "Buffalo Bills." "Without a Song" (the CD) takes its title from the song of the same name, which was performed, first by the Bills, and then the Suntones, as a signature piece in their repetoire. In addition to that aforementioned gem, which closes the CD, thirteen other examples of Keepsake's artistry, including the all-American "When The Saints Go Marchin' In," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Down Where the Swanee River Flows" are performed. "I'm Going to Live Till I Die" features one of the many audacious Keepsake tags, where the tenor voice soars in a holding pattern over the remaining three, floating, seemingly without effort, on an endless supply of air. Finally, as the four voices join together in the final glorious chord, the sun breaks through the clouds in all its magnificence. This is barbershop at its best. Songlist: When the Saints Go Marching In, Sweet, Sweet Roses of Morn, Lullaby In Ragtime, 'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans/ That Aint' Heaven, That's New Orleans, Down Where The Swanee River Flows, My Melancholy Baby, I'm Gonna Live Till I Die, Mona Lisa, Blue Skies, May I Never Love Again, I'll Fly Away, I'll Walk With God, Bass Part, Without a Song King's Singers : The Best of A fabulous 2-CD collection drawn from their now extensive catalogue on Signum Records. The first CD includes titles from Christmas along with music from Landscape and Time, Treason and Discord, Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories, Sacred Bridges, Siglio d'Oro, Romance du soir, From the heart, High Flight and the 2012 release Royal Rhymes and Rounds. The second CD includes many of their wonderful arranged and impeccably sung covers of today's popular music. Songlist: Onnis on inimene, Gloria, In Monte Oliveti, Bogoroditsye Dyevo, Civitas sancti tui, The Lamb, Mon Dieu, j'ai en toi esperance (Psalm 7), My heart is a holy place, Versa est in luctum, In ieiunio et fletu, Shir hama'a lot.Ashrei koi yere (Psalm 128), Esti Dal, Rakastava, Calme des Nuits, Music, When Soft Voices Die, Lightly she whipped o'er the dales, The Silver Swan, Days, from Even such is time, Lux Aurumque, Shall I Compare Thee...?, Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel), You are the new day, She's Always A Woman, Greensleeves, Valparaiso, Hide and seek, Home, Straighten up and fly right, The gift to be simple, Blue Skies, and more King's Singers : Six After years at the pinnacle of a cappella choral music, the King's Singers show no sign of slowing down, as their creativity and number of appearances throughout the world remain undimmed. In what has been described as their 3rd generation, "Six" is a tasty sampler spanning the life of the group since their founding in the explosive rock decade of the 1960s. The spiritual "Down In The River To Pray" appeared in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", arranged by Singer Phillip Lawson, who also arranged this sublime cover of Billy Joel's "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)." Lennon/McCartney's "Blackbird" is one of the most-requested encores in the KS' live concert repertoire. "The Wishing Tree" by former Divine Comedy member Joby Talbot, was commissioned by the KS and the BBC. Irving Berlin's moody jazz classic "Blue Skies" is sung in a cool and reflective arrangement by Singer Richard Bennett. The final cut is a soaring, surreal arrangement of Neil Young's deathless, "After the Goldrush," which takes our breath away and leaves us wanting to hear much more. One forgets just how exceptional the King's Singers are, until one is able to see them live, or one settles back next to the stereo in a comfortable chair and lets the beauty of these "Six" wash over him like a subtle, perfect tide. Songlist: Down to the River to Pray, Blackbird, The Wishing Tree, Lullabye, Blue Skies, After the Goldrush The McGuire Sisters : Do You Remember When?/While The Lights Are Low The McGuire Sisters (Phyllis, Dorothy and Christine) got their big break on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Show, where they replaced the Chordettes and remained for six years. They generated many hits throughout the 1950's and well into the next decade, and so popular were they that, as representatives for Coca-Cola, they received the highest fee in advertising history up to that time. These 24 romantic melodies just inspire harmony, and the orchestrations are brilliant as well. "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" uses imitation among the horn and string sections to reinforce the vocal line, while "Them There Eyes" is punctuated by percussion and horn accents and a half-time coda. The three voices, very similar in tone color and generally having a low tessitura in the female range, blend easily, and their vocal style is natural and without artifice. It's wonderful stuff. Songlist: Do You Remember When?, Sometimes I'm Happy, June Night, All By Myself, Tiptoe Through The Tulips With Me, Them There Eyes, Mississippi Mud, Cuddle Up A Little Closer, Lovey Mine, Does Your Heart Beat For Me?, Somebody Loves Me, S'wonderful, Blue Skies, I'm In The Mood For Love, Don't Take Your Love From Me, My Darling, My Darling, Moonglow, Tenderly, I Hadn't Anyone 'Till You, If You Were Only Mine, Wonderful One, I'm Confessin', Moon Song, Love Is Here To Stay, Think Of Me Kindly The McGuire Sisters : Sincerely The McGuire Sisters were stars of radio and television and were the most popular sister group of the 1950's. This huge 59 track 2CD set compilation covers many of the McGuire sisters' biggest hits. The majority of the McGuire Sisters' hit recordings are included here, together with several titles that are debuting on CD. Some tracks have not been available since their original single release dates. 'Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight' was the first of their recordings to change into the Top Ten in 1954, followed by the spirited 'Muskrat Ramble' four months later. The following year brought even greater record sales. Their recording of the rhythm-and-blues-oriented 'Sincerely' shot to #1 on the charts, becoming one of their greatest hits, earning gold records for all three sisters. This collection is not to miss! Songlist: Something's Gotta Give, Heavenly Feeling, Not As A Stranger, Muscrat Ramble, One Two Three, Tip Toe Through The Tulips, In The Alps, Be good To Me, Weary Blues, Cuddle Up A Little Closer Lovey Mine, Frosty The Snowman, Thank You Day, Blue Skies, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight, Missing, Picking Sweethearts, Hey Mr. CottonPicker, Tell Us Where The Godimes Are, All By Myself, Melody Of Love, Open Your Heart, Hearts Of Stone, The Naughty Lady Of Shady, Sometimes I'm Happy, Give Me Your Heart For Christmas, Christmas Alphabet, Doesn't Anybody Love Me, Delilah Jones, June Night, Pcnic, and more Perfect Gentlemen : 4 Beers and 10 Tags 2002 Harmony Sweeps winners Perfect Gentlemen's 3rd CD has 20 songs; some classic barbershop like "Blue Skies," "The Good Old Days" and "Diane," and some non-traditional stuff like "Gimme Some Skin," "Ukelele Lady," "If Ever I Would Leave You," "Java Jive," "Beware My Foolish Heart" and "Room Service," Some light guitar, piano and ukelele (but the emphasis remains on the rich harmonies) on songs like "Java Jive," "Gimme Some Skin" and "Room Service," which we heard when they hosted the Sweeps Finals, where their sound reminded us of groups like the Hi-Lo's and 4 Freshmen. The Gents can make a barbershop chord ring with the best of them, but we like their tendency to try different, even accompanied stuff, like jive, swing and 50s jazz/pop. These guys are funny, versatile, flat-out great entertainers! Songlist: Blue Skies, If Ever I Would Leave You, "The Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me", My Foolish Heart, I Want You To Be My Baby, 'Taint No Sin to Take Off Your Skin and Dance Around In Your Bones", Newly Recorded Java Jive, Red, Red Robin, They Wrote 'em in the Good Ol' Days, Daddy Sang Bass, Ukelele Lady, "Word Salad", May Each Day, Gimme Some Skin Philharmonix : Lazy Day Rick Serpico, Amy Carr, Donna Perrone and Tom Halley are PhilHarmonix, is a mixed Barbershop/Sweet Adelines quartet founded in 1997. They are winners of the 2000 Buckeye Invitational. Included on the CD are 13 songs. Some of our favorites: the title tune, "Lazy Day," The Beach Boys' "In My Room," Gershwin's "Slap That Bass," Tom Jones' "Soon It's Gonna Rain," Randy Newman's "Dayton, Ohio-1903," and "The Rhythm of Life" by Cy Coleman. Tight harmonies and great tunes add up to a winning CD! Songlist: Lazy Day, Straightened Up and Fly Right, Once in a While, Blue Skies, In My Room, A Whole New World, Puttin' on the Ritz, Soon It's Gonna Rain, Slap that Bass, When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along, Dayton, Ohio -- 1903, This Little Piggy Went to Market, The Rhythm of Life Princeton Singers : Old New Borrowed Blues Steven Sametz wears multiple hats on this recording of his work by the Princeton Singers. All of the pieces on this album were arranged by Sametz and it includes the premier of his work "Dudaryku - A Village Scene" which depicts life in a nineteenth century Ukrainian village. This piece features guest artists Chanticleer. The recording is an assortment of folksongs from around the world, American standards and American folk and gospel songs. The choir adapts beautifully to the variety diverse cultures and musical styles on this recording. Songlist: Ne Sedi, Djemo, Kas Tie Tadi, Paidu li Vwihdul ja, Dudaryku - A Village Scene, Ngam sang duan, La Villanella, Kein Feuer, Kein Kodle, Do I Love You?, We are in Love, Losing my Mind, Blue Skies, Shenandoah, Follow Jesus Ringmasters : Live The Swedish Barbershop quartet Ringmasters was founded in the fall of 2006, and they immediately were named "the young talents" in Barbershop circles. In the summer of 2008 they won their first International Gold in the Bank of America Collegiate Quartet Contest. And in 2009 they surprised the world at the Anaheim BHS Internationals, tying State Line Grocery for 4th Place. That marked the first time that a non-US group had placed in the top 10! "Live" is a limited edition, live recording of 8 songs at the Swedish venue Nybrokajen 11. Don't be too surprised to hear beautiful women's voices join Ringmasters (what a great Barbershop name!) on "Live," they are joined by Swedish Folk a cappella quartet Kraja on two cuts, "Come In and Stay Awhile" and "Limu, Limu, Lima." The other six tunes are Simon & Garfunkel's "Baby Driver," "Lazybones," Lennon/McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Blackbird," "Blue Skies" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby." Ringmasters have a fresh, powerful sound that obviously delights their live audience in addition to us. The Swedes are coming, and you really should hear them! Songlist: Baby Driver, Come In And Stay A While, Lazybones, Can't Buy Me Love, Limu, Limu Lima, Blue Skies, Blackbird, Yes Sir, That's My Baby San Francisco Girls Chorus : Heaven and Earth The music on this two disc set is some of the greatest sacred and secular repertoire ever written for treble voices, selected to showcase the talents of the young members of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The first disc, "Heaven," contains sacred music both accompanied and a cappella. Two of our favorites are mini-masterworks, Benjamin Britten's lovely "Missa Brevis in D," for voices and organ, and Francis Poulenc's mysterious "Litanies a la vierge noire." Disc II, "Earth," focuses on secular music to capture human qualities such as sorrow, joy, humor and hope. The centerpieces of the disc are three new commissions by Gabriela Lena Frank, Augusta Read Thomas and Dwight Nakamura. Frank's beautiful settings of two Peruvian poems, Thomas' elegant use of E.E. Cummings' poetry and Nakamura's jazzy take on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" are all very special. Conductor Susan McMane directs this renowned chorus in 24 beautiful tunes. A wonderfully packaged set with extensive liner notes would make a memorable, timeless holiday gift to your family and to others on your list! Songlist: Psalm 150, Ave Verum, Missa Brevis In D, Toccata from Suite Pour L'orgue, Glory to God for This Transient Life, Litanies a la virge noire, Ave Maria, Ave Verum Corpus, Ave Maria, Ave Maria, I Dream a World, I Cannot Dance O Lord, The Water of Tyne, Two Mountain Songs, Two E.E. Cummings Songs, I Got Rhythm, National Weather Forcast, Blue Skies, Over the Rainbow Spotlight : In The Spotlight It's good to be the Queen! So says this fabulous quartet after they became the 2006 Queens of Harmony in Detroit Michigan winning in one of the toughest international competitions in years. Kerry Denino, LeAnn Hazlett, Patti Britz and Kendra LaPointe wear their crowns well as is amply demonstrated on this fine recording where tight harmonies, fine voices and interesting arrangements abound. There's nothing quite like the sound of a top-notch women's barbershop quartet and this recording is one of the best in the genre. Songlist: Blue Skies, All Bound Round, If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts, Good Luck Charm, The Night We Called It A Day, How Many Hearts Have You Broken / Them There Eyes Medley, It's Only A Paper Moon, Hey Good Lookin', My Foolish Heart, As Long As I'm Singing, Why We Sing, Goodbye, World, Goodbye Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 2002 The sellout crowd at Marin Veterans Aud. in San Rafael, CA once again saw a dazzling Harmony Sweepstakes Final - Eight Regional winners from all over the country, giving their all in the "most exciting twelve minutes in a cappella." In this wonderfully recorded CD we hear Denver winner Eclipse's "Danny Boy" and "Look My Way," Bay Area Winner III of a Kind's incredible cover of "Man in the Mirror" and the Asian hit tune "Anak;" returning winner (Pacific NW) The Standards' "Ain't Got Nothing But Love" and heartfelt "Prayer of the Children;" Boston Winner Groove's great covers of "Anna Begins" and James Brown's classic "I Feel Good," and New York winner, the Russian group Autri, sings "Keimanchuli" and a stunning original by one of its members, "Tale of War." Los Angeles' Perfect Gentlemen's cutting edge barbershop harmony soars into "Blue Skies" and "Patty Cake." Washington, DC's Tone Rangers score with their offbeat covers of "I Need You" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Keep The Customer Satisfied." Finally, Chicago winner Chapter 6 nails Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and finishes with a hilarious "Wizard Of Oz Medley." In the end the judges chose The Perfect Gentlemen as National Champion, (also chosen Audience Favorite) and we walked into the night, smiling and raving about one of the best a cappella shows of all time! Songlist: Look My Way, Patty Cake, Keep the Customer Satisfied, Danny Boy, Anna Begins, I Need You, Krimanchuli, I Feel Good, Blue Skies, Tale of War, Anak, Nothing But Love, Bohemian Rhapsody, Wizard of Oz Medley, Prayer of the Children Vybration : Vybration Southern California's hottest contemporary a cappella sextet, formed in 2001 to perform at Disney's California Adventure under the name "Groove 66," led by musical director and vocal arranger Deke Sharon. The band became the park's most popular atmosphere group, and performed every day at Disneyland for almost three years; now they exist primarily outside of Disney, making appearances on TV and radio, headlining on cruise ships, corporate events and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. We had the pleasure of watching and hearing Los Angeles-based Vybration's wonderful set at the Harmony Sweeps Finals, which won them 2nd place against a very strong field of Regional winners, and Best Original Arrangement for Sharon's arrangement of "Route 66." That finger-poppingly jazzy song is one of our favorites among the 12 songs here, other ones are the Eagles' "Fly Like an Eagle," a jazzy "Blue Skies," "Fly" medley, Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," Otis Redding's Bay Area anthem segueing into the Doo-Wop hit, "Dock of the Boardwalk" the Mamas and the Papa's iconic hit "California Dreamin', Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," and "Disco Medley." Vybration's stage act was completely fun-these three men and three women obviously love what they do, and it adds up to great entertainment!
