Thank goodness they launch into a upbeat 'Blue Moon' or you would end up in a emotional puddle on the floor! If you ever were touched by the romantic songs of the fifties and sixties (and a sound alike or two from the seventies), this recording is for you. The voices are beautiful, the slides into falsetto breaks is seamless, and the arrangements keep true to the originals while filling out the instrumental parts with vocals. The Alley Cats have presented all of the greatest songs of an era, 'Silhouettes,' 'Twilight Time,' 'Earth Angel,' 'Stand By Me,' and more, sixteen cuts in all. The tempos and arrangements vary so you never become complacent and let a tune slide by out of predictability, but rather have to pay attention to each sweet riff. How about liposuction, high- rise cowboy window washers love affairs, the joy of pickled okra or a shoehorn with teeth??? Akin to the sound of one hand clapping is the question, can an a cappella group with its popularity growing in leaps and bounds still be considered be a cult classic? In the Washington DC area DaVinci's Notebook has a serious fan base who love the joy of their performances. 'Sixteen Candles,' 'Runaround Sue,' 'So Much In Love,' 'Come Go With Me,' and 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' are a partial list of the tunes, 14 in all. You can thoroughly enjoy a moment of nostalgia or enjoy those oldies anew as the harmonies are tight and rich, the bass is solid and the tunes are all from an era of great schmaltz and great vocalization, a virtual golden age of acappella. (For spelling information see the Belmont's review) Songlist: I Wonder Why, Sixteen Candles, Runaround Sue, Up On The Roof, Denise, So Much In Love, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Earth Angel, Come Go With Me, Lean On Me, The Way You Do The Things You Do, Blue Moon, In The Still Of The Night Fabulous Delacardos : Flat Top, Sock Hop, Doo Wop 'Hotter than a drive-in on a July night, smoother than a pocketful of jello... Here are The Fabulous Delacardos' That's what it says right here on the notes! We've never had a pocket full of jello, ourselves. In 1981 for a 20th class reunion of one of the members, the five men and one woman decided to recreate the music they loved as they grew up. They sing a New York style with a distinctly southern twist for they are from Tennessee. As an aside, the fine woman's voice you will hear belongs to Christy Little who ran for a Juvenile Court Judge in 1998.The 28 tunes are those that any one who went to high school in the late fifties or early sixties will have to remember fondly, or else turn in your Baby Boomer ID. Songlist: One Fine Day, Sixteen Candles, I Go To Pieces, Stagger Lee, Love Potion #9, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Silhouettes, Dedicated To The One I Love, Sh-Boom, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, So In Love, Come Go With Me, Be My Baby, Blue Moon, Cab Driver, Runaround Sue, Rockin' Robin, The Wanderer, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight, In The Still Of The Night, Hearbreak Hotel, What's Your Name, Sincerely, Sixteen Tons, Da Doo Ron Ron, Under the Boardwalk, Sea Of Love, Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay Flirtations, The : Flirtations, The Not only are The Flirtations out on the road, they are "out there" in humor, in song and performance. Trying to create a supportive environment for those who are homosexually challenged is one of the typical exchanges with the audience which makes this such a hoot. Some familiar tunes, such as "Mister Sandman" and "Boy From New York City" are given a gay twist, as you might imagine. Others are merely beautifully sung "Oughta Be A Woman," "Living In Wartime" and "Biko," for example. Then there is the off the wall fantasy entitled "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" which you just have to hear to believe! Songlist: I'll Be Forever Loving You, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Breaths, Shooting Star, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Housework, Wallflower, Something Inside So Strong, Surfin' U.S.A., It Started All Over Again, Santa Maria, Lida Rose, Blue Moon, On Children, Everything Possible, The Flirt Song Heebee-jeebees : Hurry Up And Wait You are in for a treat. This recording contains straight ahead a cappella covers with no production embellishments, sung to you by the quartet who placed first in the 1997 Northern Harmony, A Canadian A Cappella Celebration. Now even though these songs are recorded just the way you could hear them performed on stage, the vocal kazoo and trumpet chorus on "Rockin' Robin does provide a distinctive, playful, embellishment. You'll find "Good Lovin'," "Blue Moon," "For The Longest Time," "Under The Boardwalk" (nice gargle effect there), "Duke Of Earl," "Sesame Street" and more, eighteen tunes in all. Go Canada! Get Heebee-Jeebees! Songlist: Good Lovin', Blue Moon, I'm in a Hurry, The Boring Song, Rockin' Robin, Spiderman, The Longest Time, Under the Boardwalk, Duke of Earl, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight, You Kissed Me First, Sesame Street, Runsaround Sue, Rocks, California Dreamin', Rubber Duckie, Kiss Him Goodbye, The Lion Sleeps Tonight MC6 : Doo Wop A Cappella Jackson, Paul, Kim, Joe, Gary, Dan and Rick have at least two things in common: they're all wonderful Doo-Wop singers, and they're earning a lot of fans in Arizona! "Burgers, Shakes Doo-Wop," contains 16 pretty straightforward covers of Doo-Wop standards like Bob Gaudio's "Sherry," Brian Wilson's "Little Deuce Coupe," Fred Parris' "In the Still of the Night," Hart & Rodgers' "Blue Moon," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight..." this album might have been called "Greatest Doo-Wop Hits of All Time!" These 7 guys (MC6 plus 1?) absolutely nail every song, and the additional voices add more richness and depth to the harmonies. Other favorites are "Up on the Roof" and "One Fine Day" by Carole King and Gerry Goffin; "Runaround Sue" by Ernie Maresca and Dion Dimucci, Al Yankovic's very silly "Since You've Been Gone," Del Shannon's "I Go to Pieces," Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" and the album closes with Harmony Sweeps audience favorite "Goodnight Sweetheart" by James Hudson and Calvin Carter. MC6 clearly loves Doo-Wop and entertaining us, and, like the burgers and shakes we remember, it's all big fun and delicious! Songlist: Sherry, 409 / Little Deuce Coupe, Come Go With Me, In The Still Of The Night, Blue Moon, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Surfer Girl, Up On The Roof, Runaround Sue, One Fine Day, Since You've Been Gone, Teenager In Love, So Much In Love, I Go To Pieces, The Longest Time, Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight The Mighty Echoes : Doo Wop Til You Drop The Mighty Echoes have always been among our favorite Doo Woppers (not the kind you get with fries and a Coke, wise guy), so we were very pleased to see their latest release. These guys have been having way too much fun singing street corner 50s and 60s doo-wop on large stages for the last 1 years, and a great deal of seeing them live finds its way onto their CDs! "AC Doo Wop II" is their best yet, beautifully arranged, with harmonies sweet and tight enough to make the Wolfman howl. Songlist: Fools Fall in Love, Under the Boardwalk, Teenager in Love, Monster Mash, Gloria, Sh-Boom, What Time Is It?, Blue Moon, Teddy Bear, Remember Then, What's Your Name?, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Great Pretender, Do You Love Me? Peter Hunt : Voiceworks 2 - A Further Handbook for Singing Voiceworks is a magnificent resource for promoting good singing in pre-schools, schools, community choirs, adult choirs and everywhere that people sing. The Voiceworks books (complete with CDs) are packed with songs and ideas which are practical, motivating, and accessible. Voiceworks 2 is a complete guide and support for anyone who encourages or teaches other people to sing well. Singing is learned behaviour, and Voiceworks 2 aims to help singers of all ages and experience improve their capability, to develop some techniques, and get pleasure from using their voices. It is claimed that the better people feel about their voices, the better they feel about themselves, so this book is more influential than just a singing book. The music is eclectic, chosen for its accessibility, and can be used progressively as laid out in the book to build confidence and develop vocal technique, or as a 'dip in' resource to suit particular needs. Songlist: Section I: Warm Ups And Rounds, Boom Chicka Boom, Eighteen Hammers Standin', Everywhere We Go, Chicka Hanka, Sarana, Sonagwaza, Banuwa, Banaha, Janie Mama, Freedom Train, Sto Me, Yenamanoa, Oliver Cromwell, The Hand Jive, Three Way Canon Blues, Jazz Gloria, Hashivenu, Alleluia, Cantate Domino, There Was a Young Woman of Ryde, She Died, She Did!, There's a Girl that I Love, Section II: Improvising and Inventing, Section III: Spirituals and Gospel Songs, Zion me wan' go Home, Trampin', Go Down Moses, I Want to be Ready, Shoeshone Love Song, and more Showvinistics : Heart Of Saturday Night East Coast doo-wop group, whose five members ably perform oldies from a variety of styles - the common denominator of which is that they are all great American music! R & B influenced vocal harmony groups ('Drifter's Medley') and first-generation rockers, a la Buddy Holly ('Maybe Baby'), both contributed to the doo-wop sound of the fifties and early sixties. In turn, those trends evolved into Motown ('Lonely Teardrops'), and the Brill Building pop of Neil Sedaka ('Rainy Day Bells'). The Showvinistics' arrangements of songs from each of these eras retain the integrity of the style, while adding subtle impact with their solid and confident vocals. Four tracks are accompanied. Songlist: The Heart Of Saturday Night, Morse Code Of Love, Don't Ask Me To Be Lonely, Oh What A Night, Rainy Day Bells, Countdown to Love, Lonely Teardrops, Maybe Baby, Blue Moon, Drifter's Medley, Here I Am Broken Hearted, Tears On My Pillow, A White Sport Coat / Young Love, Star Spangled Banner Street Corner Serenade : Acappella The 5-man Starlight Serenade is one of Boston's finest vocal groups, and they really deliver the goods on this CD. We've always felt that the key to great male doo-wop is a solid, heavy baritone-bass anchor (the whole genre being named after nonsense words usually sung by those yummy deep voices) and Baritone Jack Mento and Bass David Jackvony are two of the best we've heard. There are 16 classic songs here, some of our favorites: 'Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye,' 'Little Darlin',' 'My True Story,' 'When I Come Home,' 'Blue Moon,' 'Little Girl of Mine,' 'Walking Along,' and the title tune, but it's hard to choose, as it's all good stuff. Rich-harmonied, deep-voiced doo-wop is like hot fudge on a hand-cranked vanilla ice cream sundae - the more the better! Songlist: Till Then, I Really Love You, Beginning To Love You, Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye, Mister Lonely, Little Darlin', My True Story, Street Corner Serenade, Hey Senorita, When I Come Home, Don't Ask Me To Be Lonely, Blue Moon, Streets Of The Bronx, Little Girl Of Mine, The Girl I Love, Walking Along UR2Kam : A Cappella UR2KAM is Simo Breede, baritone, his brother Tanel Breede, bass, Markus Leppoja, 1st tenor, and Mart Loite, 2nd tenor, and they are young, good-looking barbershop-doo-woppers from Estonia (please no "Estonia when you're driving in your car" jokes!). The liner notes are in Estonian, so we don't know what UR2KAM means, only that the group does all their own very mellow arrangements. There are a number of western pop covers here, sung in cutely-accented English; among our favorites: Jimmy Buffett's "Kokomo," "Sloop John B," "Sealed With A Kiss," "Hooked On A Feeling," "Blue Moon," "Ave Maria," and "Amazing Grace"-which highlights Tanel's smooth, powerful bass. Not in English, but spirited and entertaining: "Paula, sul on poisipea," "Labi saju," Jahikoera armuulg," and "Rajalaul." The CD is fresh and sweet-the guys have a lot of talent, and this is an excellent first effort for them! Songlist: Intro, K-K-K-Katy, Kokomo, Blue Moon, My Special Prayer, Sealed With A Kiss, Hooked on a Feeling, Paula, sul on poisipea, Ave Maria, Labi saju, Sloop John B, Amazing Grace, Jahikoera armuulg, Rahalaul Vocal Majority : Bandstand First founded by 12 men in Dallas, TX in 1971, The Vocal Majority, after a disappointing 3rd place international finish in 1973 convinced member Jim Clancy to take the role of director (and arranger). Since then they have won 11 Gold Medals! There's a classic Wurlitzer jukebox on the cover of "VM Bandstand," and if you love the Doo-Wop and Pop tunes that used to cost a dime or quarter on such a machine, this collection is for you. Although we need to warn a cappella purists that some of these tunes are rock-band accompanied, there is great stuff here-"Bandstand Boogie," "Turn Around, Look at Me," "50s Medley" (with "Lollipop," "Rock Around the Clock," "Sh-Boom" and others), "Blue Moon," "Jersey Boys Medley" ( with "Let's Hang On," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man"), "All the Way," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and others. Powerful, butter-smooth harmonies, sweet leads, great arrangements and top-drawer songlist-what's not to like? Songlist: At the Hop, Bandstand Boogie, Turn Around, Look at Me, 50's Medley, Pure Imagination, Blue Moon, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, Jersey Boys Medley, All the Way, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Bandstand Boogie (Reprise) The Alley Cats : Nine Lives When we first saw the Alley Cats it was giving a "showcase concert" on a small school stage at the A Cappella Summit, singing 4 or 5 songs. What was clear was that these four young guys simply performed sweeter, better-arranged, funnier, more together Doo-Wop than anyone we had ever heard. "9 Lives" (9 "live" performances, get it?) proves that they are even more so now. Their song selection includes our very favorites: "Blue Moon," "Duke of Earl," "Come Go With Me," "Little Darlin'," "La Bamba," "Little Bitty Pretty One," "The Book of Love," "Barbara Ann," plus 3 bonus tracks, including "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Rock N Roll is Here to Stay." The DVD includes cool footage from their appearances on Arsenio Hall and other shows, and begins with live songs from an outdoor California festival, then follows the guys on their ride to Vegas for very hot performances and outtakes there. Alley Cat fans, you of course will buy this DVD because you know that the Cats are "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group." Those unfamiliar with the group, you of course will want to see how good you have to be to bill yourself as "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group," and you won't be disappointed. We love these guys, and "9 Lives" is a treat from beginning to end!
