It's no surprise that The King's Singers have recorded a huge number of love songs on all kinds of albums over the last fifty years. Some of these were albums devoted to love songs like Chanson d'amour and Romance du soir. Other albums couldn't help but include music about love, although their theme was actually different. This album, Love Songs, is a chance to revisit some of the ensemble's favorite tracks that they've recorded over the last two decades, compiled from across their back catalogue with Signum Records. The tracks they've chosen have come from five different albums, released between 2008 and 2017. Rather than trying to take in any of the enormous number of classical love songs from the back catalogue, the group wanted to focus on some of the best folk songs, jazz standards, and pop songs that have featured in King's Singers concerts throughout their history. This selection has been curated especially to celebrate the group's favorite recent albums, and to show how rich and varied the tapestry of love songs we have today is.

Around the time The King's Singers was starting up, one of the most productive periods of songwriting in history was coming to a close in America, starting with composers such as Gershwin, Kern, Berlin and Porter in the early 1920s, and continuing through to the early 1960s. All male a cappella Vocal Jazz sextet from Kiev Ukraine ManSound was formed in 1994, the brainchild of composer/arranger Vladimir Mikhnovetsky, and they immediately began creating fans. First performing at, and winning, European Jazz festivals, ManSound hit the US by storm, wowing the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and winning the coveted Ward Swingle Award. There are 15 tunes here, some favorites (admittedly the ones in English, as we can write their names here) are a hot salsa "Mas Que Nada," a scattish "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," an unbelievable arrangement of the BeeGee's "How Deep is Your Love," "Spain (I Can Recall)," "Air on G String," "Les Moulins de Mon Coeur" ("The Windmills of Your Mind") and "Beyond The Sea." ManSound has a powerful, exuberant sound, with spot-on vocal (and non-vocal) percussion that's scary good. The leads are sweet and soaring, and who cares if the singer knows exactly what he's singing? Pride of Orange County, CA, Lead Sean Devine, formerly of the much-beloved Alley Cats, Tenor Shawn York, Baritone Patrick Claypool and Bass Cory Hunt of OC Times rose quickly in the Barbershop Harmony Society's International Quartet standings, placing 18th in 2004, 5th in 2005, 2nd in 2007 and finally winning Gold in 2008! Founded in 2006 by members of the Bay Area Metro Chorus and Garden City Chorus of San Jose CA, VIH is directed by world-renowned conductor Dr. Greg Lynn. "Northern California's Premier Men's A Cappella Chorus" boasts a membership of 131, from ages 16 to 99, and they recently returned from their first international tour, of Russia in August, 2009. Dr. Lynn very quickly turned Voices in Harmony into one of the finest a cappella choruses in the world, winning a 3rd Place Bronze medal at the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2008 International Choral Competition in Nashville, TN. The 14 songs of "Now & Then" are pure, heartstring-tugging oldies, sung by guys who love to harmonize together-in short, the very stuff of which Barbershop was made! Be it The Turtles' "Happy Together" from 1966, the Swing hit "Beyond the Sea" from 1945, the Streisand hit "The Way We Were" from 1974, Hank Williams' classic "Hey Good Lookin'" from 1951, Brian Wilson's anthem "Surfer Girl" from 1963 or Jerome Kern and and Otto Harbach's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" from 1933-we know and love these songs. How many times have we heard Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," "Little Boy Lost," "There Used To Be a Ballpark Right Here" and "This Is Some Lucky Day"-and how many times would we like to hear them again, nailed by a top-drawer men's chorus?
